Adalat (released in 1976) - A movie starring Amitabh Bachchan (in a dual role)

Amitabh Bachchan received a Filmfare nomination for his role in this film, which was a dual role. This was the only nomination received. The movie was not a very big hit, but was not a flop also. The movie also starred the following in the movie:
Amitabh's love interests - Waheeda Rehman and Neetu Singh
Others in the movie - Pinchoo Kapoor, Sujit Kumar and Kader Khan
The music for the movie was by Kalyanji Anandji and the movie was directed by Narendra Bedi.
The lyrics for the movie were by Gulshan Bawra. One of the most popular songs from the movie is called 'Behna O Behna'.
The movie was like a number of movies where Amitabh played the role of a person who is from a normal upbringing, but due to certain circumstances, Amitabh becomes a mafia man, who has turned to crime.

The movie is about revenge taken by a good man, who is pushed into a situation where he becomes a mafia man, a rich man and who is faced with the challenges of being involved with the mafia later.
The movie takes the story of a poor man from a village, Dharamchand / Dharma who lives with his family, primarily consisting of his wife Radha and his newborn son, Raju. Dharma's life takes a turn when he saves the lives of 3 people from the city, Ajit, Suresh, and Sujit, from a tiger and they promise to help him whenever he decides to visit Bombay. When Dharma goes through a bad time, he decides to move to Bombay and he is setup as a warehouse manager by Ajit.
However, soon he is involved with the police who arrest him (inspite of claiming his innocence), and sentenced to jail. When he comes out after a couple of years, he realizes that his life has totally changed, and for the worse. He avenges the rape/suicide of Laxmi by Sujit by killing all 3 of them and soon join another gang and becomes really powerful. Raju is sent off for education abroad, and the story moves into a conflict between son (Amitabh again) and his father when Raju wants to marry Geeta. What happens next ?

Hera Pheri (released in 1976) - starring Amitabh Bachchan, Vinod Khanna, and Saira Banu

Amitabh Bachchan and Vinod Khanna acted in a number of movies (a total of 6 movies) together in the 1970's, with Hera Pheri being one of them (Amar Akbar Anthony was the most famous of these). Hera Pheri was directed by Prakash Mehra, and starred Amitabh Bachchan, Vinod Khanna, Saira Banu, Sulakshana Pandit, Shreeram Lagoo and Asrani. The movie had one nomination for the Filmfare Award, with Vinod Khanna being nominated for Best Supporting Actor (although he did not win). The movie had some popular music by the music director duo of Kalyanji-Anandji, and the movie script was written by Satish Bhatnagar and Vijay Kaul.
The movie was popular, although it can get complicated. Like many other movies of that period, it showcases the hero (or heroes) as criminals, but good-hearted criminals. They are not terrorists, they don't go around shooting people with guns or something, but they steal jewelery from rich people, or they steal from rich houses, and so on.

The story of this movie is based on the relationship between 2 friends, Ajay (Vinod Khanna) and vijay (a person by the name of Vijay cannot be anybody other than Amitabh Bachchan). Vijay saves Ajay when Ajay is going to jump in front of a train, and ever since then, they became the best of friends. Ajay was sold by his father to get money for his mother's illness, and then his foster parents died, so Ajay was rendered homeless; Vijay on the other hand is troubled by the story of his parents. His father was killed, and it was on that night that his mother turned mad, and he is looking for how to cure her (maybe getting the murderer would help in doing that).
The twist in the story is that the person who killed Vijay's father is actually Ajay's long lost father (the one who sold him away and now seeks him desperately, as much as he seeks to kill Vijay's mother (she witnessed the murder of her husband and is a witness)). In order to get medication for his mom, Vijay plays a con man who, along with Ajay, cons people to earn money. When Ajay finally finds his father, he changes sides and goes to his father, leaving Vijay. What happens next ?

Sholay (1975) - One of the greatest Indian movie hits of all time

When you think of great Hindi movies, one of the names that always comes to the front is the movie called Sholay, released in 1975. The movie seems like it was set in another age, it being now 35 years since it was released and became a huge hit; and is now a cult movie. If it comes on TV even now, you can be sure that there will be some people who will want to watch. And the movie created a set of characters who became incredibly famous, specifically the few characters of Gabbar (Amjad Khan), Thakur (Sanjeev Kumar), Jai (Amitabh Bachchan), Veeru (Dharmendra), and Basanti (Hema Malini), and the under-played role of Radha (played by Jaya Bachchan).
The movie took a chance, starring a newcomer in the pivotal role of the dacoit leader (Danny was the original choice, but he was unavailable, and hence a newcomer such as Amjad Khan was selected). The movie was based on a small idea by the prolific writer duo of Salim-Javed. And the outcome was a movie that broke all records, and became a cult movie known till today.

The movie was produced by G.P. Sippy and directed by his son Ramesh Sippy. Music for the film was given by RD Burman, with the lyrics provided by Anand Bakshi. During direction, the movie went over-budget, since the director wanted to be perfect in the shooting, and many of the shots took many takes and many days. The movie also had real-life relations between the stars, with Amitabh and Jaya getting married 4 months before shooting of the movie started, and Dharmendra romancing Hema Malini at that time. The movie took a period of 2.5 years to make. The movie also had an effect on tourism, with the location of Ramanagaram (a rocky terrain), a village near Bangalore, Karnataka being the shooting site, and being known later as the location where Sholay was shot.
The movie was based on the concept of revenge, where a local dacoit terrorises the village, and also takes revenge on the family of the local thakur. The Thakur in turn hires 2 small-time but brave crooks to come in to fight the dacoit and his gang, and this is what they do, but with some sadness, as one of the 2 loses his life in the end.
The movie takes these 2 small time crooks (Jai and Veeru) in a jail. They are remembered by an ex-policeman, the Thakur, when he is looking for somebody who can help him fight the dacoits (led by Gabbar). He had apprehended them, and then see how brave they were when they fought off dacoits who were trying to rob a train. He meets them, and offers them a large amount of money if they can get rid of Gabbar and his gang. Gabbar is a violent and brutal dacoit leader who is terrorising the villages.
In the first confrontation, three men from Gabbar's gang come to get supplies from the villagers, something that they do without any issue in the past. Now, however, they face a fight from Jai and Veeru and have to go back without any supplies; at which Gabbar cannot stand the sight of his men being humiliated in front of the village and shoots them after some drama (in a scene that was much appreciated). The next major attack is on Holi, during which Jai and Veeru are pinned down and are looking for Thakur to throw a gun towards them, but he does not cooperate. Later his story is revealed, where he had arrested Gabbar some time back, and then Gabbar killed all his family except for one daughter-in-law Radha (Jaya Bhaduri). And in another confrontation, Gabbar cut off both his hands leaving him without any hands.
So, the situation continues, with Jai and Veeru staying in the village, and getting fond of Radha and Basanti respectively. Gabbar has cut off the village from the outside, but they fight back by killing some of his men. And then the final confrontation, where the fight with Gabbar and his men take place, in which Jai finally dies.

Majboor (released in 1974) - starring Amitabh Bachchan, Parveen Babi, Pran, and Farida Jalal

Majboor was a movie, released in 1974, that shows the fate of a man, who gets stuck in a web of his own making and is now making frantic efforts to extricate himself from that web. Majboor means 'Somebody who is being forced into a course of action'. The movie was a fairly decent hit, with some good performance by the leading man, the superstar Amitabh Bachchan. The movie was directed by Ravi Tandon, and produced by Premji. The movie had some good music by Laxmikant-Pyarelal, and the story of the movie was written by the hit pair of Javed Akhtar-Salim Khan (who had written many other leading movie stories as well). The stars of the movie, included, besides Amitabh Bachchan, Parveen Babi, Pran, Madan Puri, Rehman and Farida Jalal.
The movie is apparently based on an earlier American movie called Zigzag (released in 1970), based on the same subject (that of an innocent man framing himself to collect money that his family will need, since he believes that he is on his death bed, but then gets cured and now wants his freedom back).

So, Amitabh Bachchan leads a simple life as a travel agent, with his mother, his brother and his wheelchair bound sister (Farida Jalal) depending on him for the running of the family. And then, it seems that the gods have frowned down on him, and he starts suffering headaches, which leads to the diagnosis of an incurable brain tumor. But, what worried him apart from death is the fact that since he is the sole bread winner of the family, what will happen after his death ? Who will take care of him family ? This makes him even more desperate.
And in this desperation, he strikes upon an idea. One of his clients dies, and the brother of the dead man offers a reward of Rs. 5 lakhs for the finding of the murderer. And Rs. 5 lakh is a huge amount. Ravi (Amitabh) plays a game in which he will be blamed for the murder, and his family will get the Rs. 5 lakh. Everything goes according to plan, and he is caught and sentenced to death for the murder. And then, something else happens. While in jail, he suffers a major attack, and is taken to hospital where his tumor is cured; now he wants his life back, but he has already plotted his one role in the murder and is a sentenced criminal. How does he get his life back, and get the sentence reversed ? It's a taut tale, fast moving, also starring the beautiful Parveen Babi.

Reshma Aur Shera (released in 1971) - starring Sunil Dutt, Amitabh Bachchan, Waheeda Rehman, Raakhee

Reshma Aur Shera was one of the earlier movies of Amitabh Bachchan, at a time when he was not the established superstar. The movie is an account of betrayal, love, murder, honour, set against the backdrop of the sands and harshness of Rajasthan. The movie was essentially the creation of Sunil Dutt, who also produced and directed the movie.
The movie was well liked by critics, and was nominated for some international (although it did not win too many). Some of the awards it was nominated for include:
- The Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival
- Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film (Oscars)
The movie was written by S. Ali Raza, with some beautiful music by Jaidev (for which he won the 1972 National Film Award for Best Music Direction (his first award for music)).

The movie is about the feud between 2 families, and in a story that has been seen many times, where the children of both families are in love. The eldest son of Sagat Singh, Shera (Sunil Dutt) is not the more violent and revenge seeking son, trying to make peace. He is very strongly attracted to the daughter Reshma (Waheeda Rehman) of his father's rival, and she also falls in love with him when she sees how he can be strong for peace rather than for more revenge.
And yet there is a third element, the younger son of Sagat Sing, the mute Chotu (Amitabh Bachchan, who plays the role of a skilled shooter, also heavily influenced by his father). Eventually Chotu goes against the wishes of his brother in terms of not having violence and going in for peace and influenced by his father who wants Chotu to shoot the rival and his son both. And they both die; this causes Shera to hunt for his own brother to kill him. What happens next ?

Baabul (2006) - Amitabh Bachchan pushes for widow remarriage in this movie

Baabul released in the year 2006 and talks about the highly sensitive issue of widow remarriage. We are living in the twenty first century but in India, widows still lead a very hard life. The rural-urban divide in terms of the position of widow within mainstream society is only a difference in degree. The question of a widow remarrying and starting life afresh is considered to be blasphemous by many. Babul tackles this very controversial subject by focussing on all the obstacles

Talented artist Malvika Talwar ( Rani Mukherjee) meets handsome rich guy Avinash on a golf course. Following a short misunderstanding, the two fall in love with each other. They decide to get married. Avinash is completely doted upon by his parents, Balraj (Amitabh Bachchan) and Shobhna ( Hema Malini). Avinash’s parents willing acceps Malvika. Her parents too have no problem with the match. She has also the blessings of her best friend Rajat Verma (John Abraham) who secretly lover her but has never had the guts to confess his feelings.

Malvika and Avinash marry and soon become proud parents of baby boy. Things are going smoothly and Malvika is blissfully happy with her husband, son and her in-laws, who treat her like their own child. However life goes from bed of roses to bed of thorns as Avinash dies in a automobile accident. Malvika is totally shattered as are Avinash’s parents, Balrah and Shobhana. In spite of his grief, Balraj is sensitive to the desolation that he sees in his daughter-in-law’s eyes and is determined to remove it. He decides to get Malvika married to her childhood sweetheart Rajat. Initially Malvika is unwilling to start life anew but soon gives in. Shobhana too is not too happy with her husband’s decision as she is concerned whether after remarrying Malvika will let them have any access to her grandson or not. However soon she too come around. The climax sees an impassioned Balraj questioning society’s right to deny a widow the right to a life when the same right is not taken away from a widower. As he convinces his elder brother Balwant (Om Puri), who is against the notion of widow marriage, the humane impact of this act, he sends out a solemn plea to society to change its attitude towards women and particularly towards widows.

Babul is a sincere effort by Ravi Chopra to talk about a relatively taboo topic. He succeeds too up to a point of spreading awareness. Competent acting by one and all makes this film a wonderful watch. Aadesh Srivastav’s music is melodious and catchy. On the whole Babul is an honest attempt to talk about the burning question of widows and their plight.

Lakshaya - good, but failed to work

War movies typically try to raise the jingoistic pitch, pushing the envelopes of patriotism, sacrifice, dedication, and lots of grunting, screaming, and similar behavior. A typical example is Border which showed determination, courage, sacrifice, death, honor, etc. Lakshya was a bit off from this track, trying to combine the story of the development into maturity of a young rudderless route when exposed to the harsh environment of a war. In that sense, it was different from the other war movies.
The movie was a perfect opportunity for the lead star, Hrithik Roshan, to showcase his histrionic skills; he was there right from the first frame to right at the end, where his individual triumph is showcased. The other actors in the movie were Preity Zinta, Amitabh Bachchan, Om Puri and Boman Irani (although it was only Preity Zinta who got a role almost the same size as that of Hrithik). The movie was based on the Kargil war of 1999, and depicts the effort by Lieutenant (later Acting Captain) Karan Shergill to capture a critical peak and keep the honor of his Brigade. The movie was directed by Farhan Akhtar, with the story by Javed Akhtar, and music by Shankaar-Ehsaan-Loy.
The movie made some good watching. You had this guy, wandering around aimless in life, with his dad wondering when he will do something in life. Some of his friends were similarly aimless, although his girlfriend Romi (Preity Zinta) was more caring about causes, and a career for her in journalism seemed to be a likely next step. In this carefree mood, he decides to try out for the army, and actually gets selected to the astonishment of his parents. However, he cannot stand the discipline of the NDA, and jumps from there.
His parents expected this, but Romi is disgusted with him, and leaves him. He is shaken at this, and this turns him into a dedicated person. He returns to the academy, takes his punishment and graduates into a good soldier, and officer. And then he gets involved with the Kargil conflict as part of his brigade, and then meets Romi again over there. Romi's character was apparently styled on Barkha Dutt, is covering the conflict as a TV reporter. They meet, when Romi is now engaged to somebody else, and Hrithik and his brigade have to break the Pakistani stranglehood on a critical peak, and the way to do that is very challenging.

Title Song:

Haan yehi rasta hai tera, tune ab jaana hai
Haan yehi rasta hai tera, tune ab jaana hai
Haan yehi sapna hai tera, tune pehchaana hai

Haan yehi rasta hai tera, tune ab jaana hai
Haan yehi sapna hai tera, tune pehchaana hai

Roke tujhko aandhiyaan, ya zameen aur aasmaan

Lakshya toh har haal mein paana hai

Mushkil koyi, aajaaye toh, parbat koyi, takraaye toh
Taaqat koyi, dikhlaaye toh, toofaan koyi, mandlaaye toh
Mushkil koyi aajaaye toh, parbat koyi takraaye toh
Barse chaahe ambar se aag, lipte chaahe pairon se laakh -2
Paayega jo lakshya hai tera
Lakshya toh har haal mein paana hai

Himmat se jo koyi chale, dharti hille qadmon tale
Kya dooriyaan kya faasle, manzil lage aake gale
Himmat se jo koyi chale, dharti hille qadmon tale
Tu chal yunhi ab sub-o-shaam, rukna, jhukna nahin tera kaam -2
Paayega jo lakshya hai tera
Lakshya toh har haal mein paana hai

Haan yehi rasta hai tera, tune ab jaana hai
Haan yehi sapna hai tera, tune pehchaana hai
Tujhe ab ye dikhaana hai

Sarkar Raj - Taut, but does not rise to be a great movie

Sarkar Raj was a move that was awaited for quite some time; it came after a few clunkers for The Factory of Ram Gopal Verma such as 'Aag', 'Darling', etc. Memories of his earlier movies such as Satya, Company, Rangeela, and Sarkar (for which Sarkar Raj is the sequel) were fading out due to these recent disastrous movies that he made. All his admissions that the movies were bad, mistakes were made, etc, don't really help in lifting his reputation. So, this movie was awaited for multiple reasons:
- This movie showcased the Bachchan clan; Amitabh, Abhishek, and Aishwarya (not Jaya though)
- It was supposed to have the same kind of suspense, the taut and slick making that was there in the original movie Sarkar (made in 2005)

Sarkar Raj Movie - 2008; Amitabh, Abhishek, Aishwarya, Bachchan

Unlike some of his other movies where the actual direction was by other people, Sarkar Raj was actually directed by Ram Gopal Verma. Other credits for the movie include script by Prashant Pandey, background score by Amar Mohile (and the background score is haunting and fast throughout the movie, although a bit loud), cinematography by Amit Roy, and action by Allan Amin.
The movie takes off from where the previous movie had ended, with the Nagres (minus Kay Kay Menon) being in command of Maharashtra through their reign of force (although the way that elected politicians are seen to be humiliated by them is a bit patronising). There is the normal tussle between the ruling Chief Minister and his opponents, but both of them pay respects to Sarkar (Amitabh) and his son and heir Shankar (Abhishek). It is at this stage that a beautiful tall CEO of an energy company, Sheppard Power Plant in the form of Anita Ranjan (Aishwarya Rai) presents a plan for a power plant that will meet the future energy needs of Maharashtra. The only hitch is that the best place to setup the plant is a place called Thackerwadi, in rural Maharashtra. Sarkar is against this proposal, but his son sees this as a beneficial mechanism, and is willing to go to any lengths to move this proposal ahead. He first tries to convince the local leader and Gandhian Rao Saheb, and then convince the rest of the villagers about the advantages of this plant.
However, he is in way above his head. The grandson of Rao Saheb (Somji) starts to work against the deal, and to canvass people against this deal, making the deal a tough sell. Further, the management of the power company seems to think that Gujarat is now a better deal for this plant. Abhishek does not seem to realize what he he is against, and even his power (which he hardly ever uses) is unable to prevent harm to him, his wife (Tanissha in a small role) and in the end, he cannot even prevent his own killing by a hired sharp-shooter (the shooting scene was not very good, seemed amateurish). It is only when Amitabh, taking on responsibility again, starts to unravel the mystery behind his death and to show what he is capable of (basically kills everybody involved, somewhat like Michael Corleone ordering the killing of all those against the family).
And these are the weak points of the movie - If the family is so powerful and people so scared by them, how is that a massive conspiracy can get created against them (after all, in this case, there must be a large number of people who knew there was a conspiracy) without the involved fearing that the Sarkar will kill them if their involvement in the conspiracy became known. Secondly, the last 20 minutes seem like magic, where the writer wrote a twist in the story that seemed to have been manufactured out of thin air. So, the end where the last murder is shown, that emerged out of thin air, but was very chilling.
Acting is okay, with some strong parts. Aishwarya did not get all that great a role (it seemed in the end that she was being projected to be the leader in any sequel), Amitabh was good in parts. This was basically Abhishek's movie, but he came across a person who was not in touch with reality, could not comprehend that he was just a pawn in a conspiracy.

Bhootnath - Watchable

I watched Bhootnath just the day after having watched Jannat just the previous day, and given that my impression of Jannat was not good, any movie would have been good. But Bhootnath was a movie that impressed in parts. The Director, Vivek Sharma, tried to take many human emotions into the movie; thus taking the movie into 3 separate parts - the first part where the ghost appears to be evil and a danger to whoever tries to enter the property; the second part where the child makes friend with the ghost and turns him into a proper civilized person-like character with human emotions; and the third part where there is an attempt to throw in a lot of tear-jerkering emotional scene so that the ghost can disappear and everything can turn out normal. In the end, these attempts to make the movie cater to many interests put a lot of strain on the overall movie, and my feeling is that it did not turn out as well as could be. The movie takes on a heavy social issue of how children go abroad, and become of that land.
The movie is geared towards kids, and that was clear when I saw the songs. They were all songs designed to appeal to children, and it did seem a bit different to see songs that had a lot of kids in them; but most of the audience was adults, so was wondering whether there was a mismatch in terms of the advertising of the movie versus the intended effect of the advertising. The movie has a cast that is capable of some great things - Amitabh Bachchan, Aman Siddiqui, Juhi Chawla, Rajpal Yadav, Satish Shah, Priyanshu Chatterjee and Shahrukh Khan. Amitabh Bachchan gives a good role, but one feels that in the middle of the movie, he gets overshadowed by the kid, and then in the latter half of the movie, Shahrukh Khan seems to get most of the attention (Shahrukh Khan had a role that was more than a guest appearance, but less than a full role). Rajpal Yadav was very thoroughly under-used in the movie, getting 2 very brief scenes (almost like a cameo).
The movie is about the intersection of the characters of the young boy, Banku, and the ghost of Kailash Nath. The family of Shahrukh Khan, an engineer with a cruise company, comprises of his wife Juhi Chawla, and son Banku (Banku is a very naughty guy, and it soon shows up in school where he gets into numerous fracas (showed in a humorous way)). Shahrukh has to move his family to Goa, and his company arranges for a rental in Nath Villa (one wonders how his company did a rental in a villa that everyone knows is haunted). Juhi does not believe in ghosts, and their son has no idea about what a ghost is.
And then Banu meets the Ghost, and soon manages to control the ghost through his antics, his innocence and his questions (it helps that the ghost is of a man who was devoted to his son, and who died pining for him). And then there is a lot of camadrie between Amitabh and Amar, while Juhi is not able to believe that there is a such a thing as a ghost. This means that the ghost learns to dress normally, and even to shed tears when Banku suffers a serious injury. There is an excellent scene when Juhi realizes that her son was telling the truth, during a stage performance, and is able to actually imagine as to where the ghost must be standing.
From this point onwards, the movie becomes very serious, with the aim being to help the ghost forgive his son (who had gone abroad and not returned until his mother died pining for him), and eventually help him attain salvation. At this point, the movie moves into heavy emotional scenes, and I could see the atmosphere suddenly becoming silent in the movie hall. Music is by Vishaal Shekhar, but one felt that it was unnecessary other than the heavy Samay Ka Pahiya.

Silsila: The movie portraying real-life relationships ?

Silsila was a movie that seemed way ahead of its time. It was released on August 14, 1981, and starring a powerful star cast; Shashi Kapoor, Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bhaduri, Rekha, Sanjeev Kumar, and others. The movie was even more sensational because the movie was rumoured to be about a relationship between Amitabh Bachchan and Rekha, with an equally strong rumour about an actual real-life relationship between the two.
However, the movie did not work well at the box office, with the most probable reason being that the audience was not ready for th depiction of an adulterous relationship between Amitabh Bachchan and Rekha (when both of them were married to other people). The movie had some great music, with good songs and some great dialogue. The music was by Shiv-Hari, with lyrica by Javed, Rajendra Krishan, Nida Fazli, Hassan Kamal. You can see the flourish of Yash Chopra's direction, with a movie that seems almost like a poem, a romance story on a large scale. Performances by the various actors is great, and give the story great strength.
The movie is about the love story between Amitabh Bachchan and Rekha, a story that flourishes twice, and yet is destined to fail. The first time they meet is when Amitabh goes to Kashmir to meet his army officer brother Shashi Kapoor and his fiancee Jaya Bachchan. There Amitabh meets Rekha, and it is love at first sight. However, Shashi Kapoor dies in action, and it is then revealed that Jaya is pregnant. To care for his brother's fiancee and the baby, Amitabh sacrifices his love and marries Jaya, telling Rekha to forget him. Rekha eventually gets married to a doctor (Sanjeev Kapoor), a loving man.
And it happens. Amitabh and Rekha meet again, and the old passion gets ignited. They meet often, and are soon involved in a passionate affair (with the twist that they are both betraying their spouses). Their spouses are soon suspicious, while Amitabh and Rekha decide to leave their partners. However, at this time, Dr. Sanjeev Kumar is involved in a place accident, and needs support and help. This time, both lovers decide to make the ultimate sacrifice and go back to their respective spouses.

Lyrics:

Dekha Ek Khwab

Dekha Ek Khwaab To Yeh Silsile Hue
Door Tak Nigahon Mein Hain Gul Khile Hue
Yeh Gila Hai Aapki Nigahon Se
Phool Bhi Ho Darmiyaan To Faasle Hue
Dekha Ek Khwaab...

Meri Saanson Mein Basi Khushboo Teri
Yeh Tere Pyaar Ki Hai Jadugari
Teri Aawaz Hai Havaaon Mein
Pyar Ka Rang Hai Phizaaon
Dhadkanon Mein Tere Geet Hain Mile Hue
Kya Kahun Ke Sharm Se Hain Lub Sile Hue
Dekha Ek Khwaab...

Mera Dil Hai Teri Panaahon
Aa Chhupa Loon Tujhe Maein Baahon Mein
Teri Tasveer Hai Nigaahon Mein
Door Tak Roshni Hai Raahon Mein
Kal Agar Na Roshni Ke Kaafile Hue
Pyar Ke Hazaar Deep Hain Jale Hue
Dekha Ek Khwaab...

nainon mein neendiya
neendiya mein sapane
sapanon mein saajan
jab se basa hai
bahaaren aayi jeevan mein
nayi hulchul hai tanman mein
ek roop basa hai ankhiyon mein ho ho
sar se sarke sarke chunariya
laaj bhari ankhiyon mein

kuchh lamhe jeevan ke churale
saanson ki yeh aag bujha le
duniya se duur kahi duniya basa le
jab se mili hai tujhse nigaahen
jaadu yeh kaisa mujh pe hua
ke dil jab tanha lagta hai
mujhe kuchh aaisa lagta hai
tu jhaank raha hai ankhiyon mein
sar se sarke sarke chunariya
laaj bhari ankhiyon mein

aaj ka har ek pal sundar hain
kal kya ho kisko yeh khabar hai
lamba safar zindagi mukhtasar hai
darr lag raha hai kya jaane kya ho
dil tujhko maine jabse diya
udi hai neende aankhon se
teri aaisi hi baaton se
badnaam hui hu sakhiyon mein
sar se sarke sarke chunariya
laaj bhari ankhiyon mein
ho maiyya gaaye sajan kehna hoke magan
gaake sakhiyon mein
nainon mein neendiya

ek roop basa hai ankhiyon mein ho ho
sar se sarke sarke chunariya
laaj bhari ankhiyon mein

taaron se yeh maang sajadu
hothon pe ek phool khiladu
tere liye saari duniya bhula du
mehkega sara gulshan humara
dil ka sahara baahen teri hogi
khushi se hari bhari hogi
yeh duniya teri meri hogi

Yeh Kahan Aa Gaye Hum

--MALE--
Main aur meri tanhaai aksar yeh baatein karte hain
Tum hoti to kaisa hota, tum yeh kehti, tum voh kehti
Tum is baat pe hairaan hoti, tum us baat pe kitni hansti
Tum hoti to aisa hota, tum hoti to vaisa hota
Main aur meri tanhaai aksar yeh baatein karte hain

--FEMALE--
Yeh kahan aa gaye hum
Yunhi saath saath chalte
Teri baahon mein hai jaanam
Mere jism-o-jaan pighalte
Yeh kahan aa gaye hum
Yunhi saath saath chalte

--MALE--
Yeh raat hai, yeh tumhaari zulfein khuli hui hai
Magar yeh dil hai ke keh raha hai
Ke tum yahin ho, yahin kahin ho

--FEMALE--
O, tu badan hai main hoon chhaaya
Tu na ho to main kahan hoon
Mujhe pyaar karne waale
Tu jahan hai main vahan hoon
Hamein milna hi tha hamdam
Issi raah pe nikalte
Yeh kahan aa gaye hum
Yunhi saath saath chalte
Mm, meri saans saans maheke
Koi bheena bheena chandan
Tera pyaar chaandni hai
Mera dil hai jaise aangan
Koi aur bhi mulaayam
Meri shaam dhalte dhalte
Yeh kahan aa gaye hum
Yunhi saath saath chalte

--MALE--
Majboor yeh haalaat, idhar bhi hai udhar bhi
Tanhaai ki ek raat, idhar bhi hai udhar bhi
Kehne ko bahut kuch hai, magar kisse kahe hum
Kab tak yunhi khaamosh rahe aur sahe hum
Dil kehta hai duniya ki har ek rasm utha de
Deevaar jo hum dono mein hai, aaj gira de
Kyoon dil mein sulagte rahe, logon ko bata de
Haan humko mohabbat hai, mohabbat hai, mohabbat
Ab dil mein yehi baat, idhar bhi hai udhar bhi

--FEMALE--
Yeh kahan aa gaye hum
Yunhi saath saath chalte
Yeh kahan aa gaye hum

Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gam (2001)

Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gam (also known as K3G or KKKG) was a much awaited movie from the Karan Johar stable since it promised to bring together the 2 biggest stars of Bollywood, Amitabh Bachchan and Shahrukh Khan. In addition, the movie would also star the very infrequently seen Jaya Bachchan, and a bonus would be the hearthrob and hunk, Hrithik Roshan. Kajol and Kareena Kapoor would complete the list of all the star cast.
The movie, set on the complicated relationship in a family bound by traditions, and yet caring and loving each other, was a big hit. Although it also true that there are a number of people who can't stand the movie, given that the story line is very limited, and the central theme of the movie is the distance between the father and the son due to the ego clashes between them (more due to the father not willing to bend his principles). The movie is also about the husband-wife relationship and about the expectations vs. responsibility of this relationship.

Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gam
Right from the beginning, Yashovardhan Raichand (Bachhan) and wife Nandini (Jaya) have set family norms based on certain principles and family traditions that are really inflexible. Yashovardhan is the typical patriarch who runs the family, and his word is law. Nandini respects his authority, but is more believing in the love between her and her sons, and that is the abiding principle of her life. They have 2 sons, Rahul (Shah Rukh) who is adopted, and Rohan (Hrithik Roshan), who is younger to Shahrukh by 8 years. Because Rahul is adopted, he is even more dedicated to his parents and will obey every wish of theirs.
Things are on track, and Yashovardhan is looking to get Rahul married to Rani Mukherjee (in a guest role) who is of a similar status and has even agreed to the match. And then disaster strikes. Shahrukh falls in love with Anjali (Kajol), a bubbly but clumsy girl from Chandni Chowk (and daughter of a local shop-keeper Anupam Kher). She for some time remains unaware of his love, but slowly realizes it. However, Yashovardhan will have none of it, and forbids this love. And this is where it would have remained had tragedy not struck in the shape of the death of Anupam Kher. Shahrukh marries Anajali, but the ego and conflict between father and son drives Shahrukh far away, to England.
The father has his ego, but Nandini can only suffer and pine over the loss of her elder son. It is then that the younger son, leaning about the actual reasons for Shahrukh not being there in the house, promises to get him back. And so he sets out, finding them and making friends through Kareena (playing a girl of her age, with all the pomp and show). Eventually Kajol finds out, and then Shahrukh also finds out (when Hrithik teacher Shahrukh's son this family saying "Jab bhi tumhe kuchh pana ho, kuchh hasil karna ho to humesha apne man ki suno aur agar man se bhi koi jawab na aye to apni ankhe band karo aur apne ma-baba ka nam lo … har muskil asan ho jayegi, har manzil nazdeek lagegi aur jeet tumhari hogi.").
And then the return of Shahrukh to the family home, well inspired by an act of rebellion by Nandini who tells her husband that the consequences of his actions led to grief and suffering; and eventually he realizes the love within him.
The movie has plenty of emotional scenes, and the director uses them to the maximum in order to cover over a script that is not very detailed. The music is good, with some hummable and hit songs (music by Jatin-Lalit, Aadesh Shrivastava and Sandesh Shandilya; lyrics by Sameer, Choreography by Farah Khan).

Song: Do Lafzon Ki Kahani

A beautiful song from a hard core action movie; one of Amitabh's great masala movies. The movie was released in 1979, and stars Amitabh Bachchan (in a double role), Zeenat Aman, Neetu Singh, Prem Chopra, Madan Puri, Iftekhar, Utpal Dutt and Helen. The movie was directed by Shakti Samanta (who excelled in making action movies) and the movie composer was Rahul Dev Burman (RD Burman).
A movie that combined elements of adventure, spying, police, patriotism, and foreign locales, the Great Gambler is about Amitabh (Jai) who plays a skilled gambler, who claims to have never lost a game. He is recruited by Utpal Dutt to make money from rich people and maybe get them in debt and able to do favors. Through this method, one day he manages to hook a scientist who gets blackmailed into revealing the secret of a top secret military laser.
And then Inspector Vijay (Amitabh again) is sent to get the secrets back and get Jai. And then the confusion occurs since they look so much alike that everybody gets confused. And then both of them get sent to Rome and more confusion with Neetu Singh and Zeenat Aman getting confused.

Song: Do Lafzon Ki Kahani

Do Lafzon Ki Kahani

Lyrics:

do labjon kee hai, dil kee kahaanee
yaa hain mohabbat yaa hain jawaanee

dil kee baato kaa, matalab naa poochho
kuchh aaur hum se, bas ab naa poochho
jis ke liye hain duniyaan diwaanee,
yaa hain mohabbat yaa hain jawaanee

ye kashtiwaalaa, kyaa gaa rahaa thaa
koee ise bhee, yaad aa rahaa thaa
kisse puraane, yaade puraanee
yaa hain mohabbat yaa hain jawaanee

is jindagee ke, din kitane kam hai
kitanee hain khushiyaa, aaur kitane gam hai
lag jaa gale se, rut hain suhaanee
yaa hain mohabbat yaa hain jawaanee

Song: Chookar Mere Man Ko

From the movie Yaarana, this song is an extra-ordinarily beautiful song. The scenario of the song is when Neetu Singh is training Amitabh Bachchan for a stage performance, and he is unable to do it. She gets angry with him for not doing this, and asks him whether he can do this for her. He then sings this song, and after this song, he sings the stage song, 'Saara Zamana Hasino Ka Deewana'. The movie had another beautiful song, 'Tera Jaisa Yaar Kahan'. The movie starred Amitabh Bachchan, Amjad Khan, Neetu Singh, Tanuja, and the movie was directed by Rakesh Kumar with music by Rajesh Roshan.
The movie had a beautiful story of friendship between Amitabh and the late Amjad Khan (probably one of the few positive roles by Amjad Khan). Amjad Khan and Amitabh are fast childhood friends, but get separated when Amjad's mother takes him to the city. He gets rich and successful, and then calls his friend Amitabh over to make him a star. Amitabh has a good voice, trains with Neetu Singh and eventually becomes a star. Around the same time, Amjad sees his fortune vanishing, and gets into serious trouble. At this time Amitabh helps him and displays the true characters of a good friend.

Lyrics:

Chhookar Mere Man Ko Kiya Toone Kya Ishaara
Badla Yeh Mausam Lage Pyaara Jag Saara

Tu Jo Kahe Jeevan Bhar Tere Liye Maein Gaoon
Geet Tere Bolon Pe Likhta Chala Jaoon
Mere Geeton Mein Tujhe Dhoonde Jag Saara
Chhookar Mere Man Ko

Aaja Tera Aanchal Yeh Pyaar Se Maein Bhar Doon
Khushiyaan Jahan Bhar Ki Tujhko Nazar Kar Doon
Tu Hi Mera Jeevan Tu Hi Jeene Ka Sahaara
Chhookar Mere Man Ko

Saara Zamana Hasino Ka Deewana

Tera Jaisa Yaar Kahan

Baghban: A very emotional movie

Sometimes you come across a very emotional movie that also seems very realistic. The same is the case with Baghban, where you realize the state of the parents who have been mis-treated by their children, and eventually leave home. However, in the movie, the parents have a partial happy ending, but this is not necessarily true in real life where parents when left by their children do not have any other resort, either willing to live a more depressed way of life, ill-treated by their children, or moving out of the home and moving to an age-old home / shelter. No good choices for them.
The movie is about the concept of a Baghban, a gardener, who plants a tree for the future and nurtures it so that it will give him re-assurance in later life. Same is the case with Raj (Amitabh Bachchan) who lives with his wife (Hema Malini) and their 4 children. Raj has a good life when working, investing heavily into the future of his children and giving them the best, with the expectation that they will take care of him later. In this, he disregards any need for savings, and instead invests even his pension and gratuity. He also takes care of an orphan, Salman Khan, showering him with love as well (and this is where the true of fruits coming later in life show themselves).
And then comes the time when he is about to retire, expecting that his sons will now take care of him and his wife. His sons get to know that he has no savings left, and along with their wives (who are not so considerate about parents either), they are not able to resolve who will take care of their parents; with none of them being very willing to volunteer. They also fear that their separate lives will get disturbed with an elder couple coming to live with them. They finally decide to split their parents, with each parent living in a son's house for 6 months, and then rotating to another son, but not together.
The parents are not very happy at this prospect, but don't have much of a choice. When living in their son's house, they also don't get the kind of respect that they deserve, with incidents such as not sitting at the head of the table, being blamed for revealing a surprise party, letting kids stay out late, and so on. Even in the midst of this, the mother takes a role in saving one of her grand-daughter's modesty at a party.
Finally, at the end of the 6 months, they make an agreement that this is not working, and move away without telling the children. They are concerned about what they will do, and then they start getting some good luck. First, the manager of a hotel where they were earlier there at the inauguration years back gives them respect, then the orphan / adopted son, Salman finds them and takes them to his house (where he is living with his wife Mahima Chaudhary). There they get the respect that they deserve and are looking for.
Finally, a manuscript that Amitabh had written finds its way to a publisher where the publisher's wife reads it and is heavily impressed. The book, about a situation similar to what Raj has gone through, is a best-seller and Amitabh now gets a fair amount of money. His sons finally get to know where Amitabh is, but they are realistic enough to know that Amitabh is not likely to share any of this money with them. At a function where they are also called, Amitabh finally repulses them with the statement that he cannot forgive and forget this utter betrayal that they did.
The movie is a remake of 2 different movies - the Marathi movie 'Tu Thitha Me', meaning Where You Are There I Am, and a National award winning Kannada movie 'Post Master'.
Songs of the movie can be played from this link.

Here is the final speech that Amitabh gives at the function, and it is a very good speech:

Other famous songs from the movie:

Soni Teri Chal

Pehle Kabhie Na

Main Yahan To Wahan (a very sad song, but very beautiful)

Chali Chali

Cheeni Kum: A nice sweet movie

Cheeni Kum had been released more than 2 weeks back ago, but it was fairly busy on the weekends, and I was somewhat busy on the weekends, unable to go see the movie. Well, I finally found time last weekend, and I did not regret it one bit. The hall was Housefull, although there were only 2 shows during the day.
It is also a different kind of movie, given that I have never seen a successful movie in India giving a romance between 2 people with an age difference of 30 years, Amitabh Bachchan being shown in the movie as a 64 year old man, and Tabu as a 34 year old man. In a normal movie, you might have expected to see a romance develop, but then shear off since the age difference is too vast. Not so. This movie is sure to give a filip to our older citizens, telling them that life is not done beyond the 60's.
Budhadev Ghosh (Amitabh Bachchan) is the perfectionist chef of Spice6, an Indian restaurant in London. He is unmarried, lives with his mother (Zohra Sehgal) who looks old, but not in spirit. She is forever after her son to join a gym, so as to make his condition better. He in turn keeps on poking fun at her cooking. He also has a very sweet relationship with his 6 year neighbor, Sexy (Swini Khara), who suffers from cancer, and realizes that she does not have a full life.
His life is normal, where he is a terror in his restaurant's kitchen, unsparing of any mistakes. Then one day a mistake happens. Neena (Tabu), coming from India in a low fare flight, comes into the restaurant with her cousin and orders Hyderabadi Zafrani Pulao (narrated by the waiter in a different accent that Amitabh keeps on trying to correct). Amitabh is astounded when the dish is returned to the kitchen as being sweet, and goes out and tells her off about not realizing quality when she sees it.
The next day, he realizes with a bit of investigative work that the mistake was caused due to the sugar and salt containers being right next to each other. This intrigues him. He has to apologize, but is not sure as to how to do it. His staff in the meantime is having (the discussions in the kitchen lend a nice bit of comedy to the film). It's raining, and he offers Tabu an umbrella outside the restaurant. He is somewhat intrigued by her, and looks forward to her coming again.
On a regular basis, she uses the excuse of his umbrella to come again and again to the restaurant, and he looks forward to those trips. He even starts going to the gym, to the surprise of his mother and neighbor. Once when she is eating with her cousin's boyfriend, Amitabh becomes quite incredibly jealous.
Anyhow, the romance develops, and eventually they decide to marry. It is decided that he will go to India to ask her father for her hand. And then tragedy strikes. Sexy becomes ill, and is in hospital. At the same time, Tabu's father is unwell. There is a bit of tension at this point, but he eventually comes to India. And then the next part of the movie starts. Tabu's father is Paresh Rawal, a 58 year old (younger than Amitabh), and when Amitabh is introduced to him, Paresh talks to him like a normal retired person; with phrases such as grand-children, retirement, body being wracked by ageing issues, and so on. Amitabh is not able to get the time to push the question.
Eventually, he does so in the men's room of a hotel, shocking Paresh beyond reason. Paresh is shocked, after all Amitabh is 30 years older. But when Tabu also supports the proposal, Paresh is shocked and goes on a fast to break this relationship. The movies drags at this point, but eventually Paresh gives in and agrees. Just when he has agreed, Sexy dies, so that moment is a bitter-sweet moment for Amitabh.
Overall, this is a nice movie, not having any great twist, but still holding attention through a mixture of comedy and romance. The title song Cheeni Kum is great, and plays throughout the movie.
