Amitabh Bachchan and Vinod Khanna acted in a number of movies (a total of 6 movies) together in the 1970's, with Hera Pheri being one of them (Amar Akbar Anthony was the most famous of these). Hera Pheri was directed by Prakash Mehra, and starred Amitabh Bachchan, Vinod Khanna, Saira Banu, Sulakshana Pandit, Shreeram Lagoo and Asrani. The movie had one nomination for the Filmfare Award, with Vinod Khanna being nominated for Best Supporting Actor (although he did not win). The movie had some popular music by the music director duo of Kalyanji-Anandji, and the movie script was written by Satish Bhatnagar and Vijay Kaul.
The movie was popular, although it can get complicated. Like many other movies of that period, it showcases the hero (or heroes) as criminals, but good-hearted criminals. They are not terrorists, they don't go around shooting people with guns or something, but they steal jewelery from rich people, or they steal from rich houses, and so on.

The story of this movie is based on the relationship between 2 friends, Ajay (Vinod Khanna) and vijay (a person by the name of Vijay cannot be anybody other than Amitabh Bachchan). Vijay saves Ajay when Ajay is going to jump in front of a train, and ever since then, they became the best of friends. Ajay was sold by his father to get money for his mother's illness, and then his foster parents died, so Ajay was rendered homeless; Vijay on the other hand is troubled by the story of his parents. His father was killed, and it was on that night that his mother turned mad, and he is looking for how to cure her (maybe getting the murderer would help in doing that).
The twist in the story is that the person who killed Vijay's father is actually Ajay's long lost father (the one who sold him away and now seeks him desperately, as much as he seeks to kill Vijay's mother (she witnessed the murder of her husband and is a witness)). In order to get medication for his mom, Vijay plays a con man who, along with Ajay, cons people to earn money. When Ajay finally finds his father, he changes sides and goes to his father, leaving Vijay. What happens next ?
When you think of great Hindi movies, one of the names that always comes to the front is the movie called Sholay, released in 1975. The movie seems like it was set in another age, it being now 35 years since it was released and became a huge hit; and is now a cult movie. If it comes on TV even now, you can be sure that there will be some people who will want to watch. And the movie created a set of characters who became incredibly famous, specifically the few characters of Gabbar (Amjad Khan), Thakur (Sanjeev Kumar), Jai (Amitabh Bachchan), Veeru (Dharmendra), and Basanti (Hema Malini), and the under-played role of Radha (played by Jaya Bachchan).
The movie took a chance, starring a newcomer in the pivotal role of the dacoit leader (Danny was the original choice, but he was unavailable, and hence a newcomer such as Amjad Khan was selected). The movie was based on a small idea by the prolific writer duo of Salim-Javed. And the outcome was a movie that broke all records, and became a cult movie known till today.
The movie was produced by G.P. Sippy and directed by his son Ramesh Sippy. Music for the film was given by RD Burman, with the lyrics provided by Anand Bakshi. During direction, the movie went over-budget, since the director wanted to be perfect in the shooting, and many of the shots took many takes and many days. The movie also had real-life relations between the stars, with Amitabh and Jaya getting married 4 months before shooting of the movie started, and Dharmendra romancing Hema Malini at that time. The movie took a period of 2.5 years to make. The movie also had an effect on tourism, with the location of Ramanagaram (a rocky terrain), a village near Bangalore, Karnataka being the shooting site, and being known later as the location where Sholay was shot.
The movie was based on the concept of revenge, where a local dacoit terrorises the village, and also takes revenge on the family of the local thakur. The Thakur in turn hires 2 small-time but brave crooks to come in to fight the dacoit and his gang, and this is what they do, but with some sadness, as one of the 2 loses his life in the end.
The movie takes these 2 small time crooks (Jai and Veeru) in a jail. They are remembered by an ex-policeman, the Thakur, when he is looking for somebody who can help him fight the dacoits (led by Gabbar). He had apprehended them, and then see how brave they were when they fought off dacoits who were trying to rob a train. He meets them, and offers them a large amount of money if they can get rid of Gabbar and his gang. Gabbar is a violent and brutal dacoit leader who is terrorising the villages.
In the first confrontation, three men from Gabbar's gang come to get supplies from the villagers, something that they do without any issue in the past. Now, however, they face a fight from Jai and Veeru and have to go back without any supplies; at which Gabbar cannot stand the sight of his men being humiliated in front of the village and shoots them after some drama (in a scene that was much appreciated). The next major attack is on Holi, during which Jai and Veeru are pinned down and are looking for Thakur to throw a gun towards them, but he does not cooperate. Later his story is revealed, where he had arrested Gabbar some time back, and then Gabbar killed all his family except for one daughter-in-law Radha (Jaya Bhaduri). And in another confrontation, Gabbar cut off both his hands leaving him without any hands.
So, the situation continues, with Jai and Veeru staying in the village, and getting fond of Radha and Basanti respectively. Gabbar has cut off the village from the outside, but they fight back by killing some of his men. And then the final confrontation, where the fight with Gabbar and his men take place, in which Jai finally dies.
Some interesting scenes from the movie:
Where Jai talks to Basanti's mausi and turns her against Veeru, and Veeru on the water tank:
Scene from the jail early in the movie with Asrani:
The struggle to remain good and maintain high morals when facing adverse situations in life can be a hard struggle; after all, there are a number of movies depicting how a criminal rose up in life because of poverty are a large number. Manoj Kumar has made a number of movies on the concept of patriotism, or on the struggle in life between the good and the bad, with this movie being an integral part of his collection. The name 'Roti Kapda aur Makaan' delineates this struggle, with the words literally translating into the following - Food, Clothes and House (Shelter), depicting the necessities of life.
The movie was a very successful movie, having struck a chord in the audience about the struggle to make ends meet and the moral problems that get associated with such struggles, becoming the most successful movie of 1974. The movie was made (produced and directed) by Manoj Kumar, and like many of his other movies, was a multi-starrer, starring Shashi Kapoor, Zeenat Aman, Amitabh Bachchan, Moushmi Chatterjee, besides Manoj Kumar in the lead role.
Some of the songs of the movie were very successful, such as "Hay Hay Yeh Majboori", "Main Na Bhoolunga", etc. The music for the movie was by Laxmikant-Pyarelal (earning him a Filmfare Award Nomination, and winning the Best Lyrics award for Santosh Anand).
The movie is about the head of a family, Bharat (Manoj Kumar) who takes on the responsibility for his family after the retirement of his father. He has 2 younger brothers Vijay (Amitabh Bachchan) and Deepak (Dheeraj Kumar), as well as a sister Champa, who is eligible to get married. However, he is not so successful, not able to find work despite having a good education. The only earning he has is through a job as a singer, but it does not pay that much; this makes his girlfriend Sheetal (Zeenat Aman) extremely frustrated, and she starts working as a secretary to a rich businessman Mohan Babu (Shashi Kapoor), who starts falling in love with her; she is seemingly more interested in his wealth.
Bharat in the meantime is going through more struggles; his efforts to become a builder end in failure when the Government takes over his building site and leaves him with grave financial problems. Sheetal also gets engaged to her boss, and then Bharat's father dies. Even when a suitor is found for his sister Champa, Bharat is unable to get the required amount of money for the marriage. What does Bharat do ? How does he resist the temptation to get into crime ?
Bombay to Goa is one of the earlier movies of Amitabh Bachchan, and hence, at those times, there were roles that were not written solely for him, but since he was a young and upcoming actor, the movie did showcase him; with the movie "Bombay to Goa" being meant to launch the brother of Mehmood, Anwar Ali, and also showcase the talent of Amitabh Bachchan.
The movie is mostly about a bus journey, taken by a young girl where she is seeking to escape the clutches of a man looking to kill her (he has already taken money from her and also killed his own partner for the same money). The bus journey provides her (and the viewers) with a lot of adventure, and also makes her more mature.
The movie was produced by NC Sippy and directed by S. Ramanathan; and stars Amitabh Bachchan, Shatrughan Sinha, Aruna Irani and Mehmood. The music for the movie was given by R.D.Burman.
Mala's picture appears in a magazine, submitted by 2 friends of Mala (Sharma (Shatrughan Sinha), and Verma (Manmohan)); however her parents are very surprised and astonished to see these photos, and plan to marry her off to the son of their friend. However, Mala is certainly not ready to marry somebody whom she does not know and dreams of a film career. She does not understand the attitude of her parents, takes a lot of money from her parents without their knowing, and runs away from home.
She hands the money over to Sharma and Verma; and seeing this much money, their intention changes and they fight among themselves for the money, with Sharma killing Verma. Mala sees this, and is now running for her life from Sharma and tries to escape on a bus that is on the way to Goa. However, Sharma soon finds her and then enters Ravikumar (Amitabh Bachchan) who wants to save Mala. Eventually Mala starts to trust Ravikumar. The movie becomes very interesting due to the various assorted passengers on the bus, representing a cross section of people from all over India, with Mehmood playing the role of the conductor of the bus, and his brother, Anwar Ali, playing the driver Rajesh.
Guddi was a movie released in 1971, produced and directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee (who made a number of famous movies during the 70's) and was written by Gulzar. However, the movie is best famous for giving Jaya Bachchan, then a young and upcoming actress, a canvas for her to show her acting skills and fortunately for her, the movie did well and was praised (thus leading to a lot of praise for Jaya Bachchan). The movie also starred Dharmendra, Utpal Dutt, and had a number of other starts such as Amitabh Bachchan, Om Prakash and Pran making guest appearances in the movie; this was also because the movie was also about a big star and his work in Bollywood, so a lot of details about Bollywood were shown in the movie. In fact, some other stars such as Biswajeet, Rajesh Khanna, Vinod Khanna, Ashok Kumar, Dilip Kumar, Naveen Nischol, Om Prakash, Pran, Shashikala and Mala Sinha played cameo roles in the movie.
The movie also had some good music with songs such as "Bole Re Papihara" and "Humko Man Ki Shakti Dena" (sung by Vani Jairam) becoming very famous for their classical background. The music for the film was given by Vasant Desai.
The movie is about the concept of being attracted by the on-screen personality of a star, based on what the star plays as characters, instead of knowing the real life of the star (and where the character of the star could be very different from the characters played). In this case, Kusum (Jaya Bachchan) is a schoolgirl who develops an incredible crush for the movie star Dharmendra; she lives with her family; but when she visits Mumbai, that is when the crush that she has for Dharmendra really reveals itself.
At that time, her sister-in-law's brother, Navin (Bengali film actor Samit Bhanja) falls in love with her, but when she is so much after Dharmendra, it is impossible that she could even listen to anybody else. Navin takes help from his own uncle, Utpal Dutt, who also knows Dharmendra, and they resolve to show Kusum the difference between the reel life and real life (taking help from Dharmendra for this).
Reshma Aur Shera was one of the earlier movies of Amitabh Bachchan, at a time when he was not the established superstar. The movie is an account of betrayal, love, murder, honour, set against the backdrop of the sands and harshness of Rajasthan. The movie was essentially the creation of Sunil Dutt, who also produced and directed the movie.
The movie was well liked by critics, and was nominated for some international (although it did not win too many). Some of the awards it was nominated for include:
- The Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival
- Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film (Oscars)
The movie was written by S. Ali Raza, with some beautiful music by Jaidev (for which he won the 1972 National Film Award for Best Music Direction (his first award for music)).
The movie is about the feud between 2 families, and in a story that has been seen many times, where the children of both families are in love. The eldest son of Sagat Singh, Shera (Sunil Dutt) is not the more violent and revenge seeking son, trying to make peace. He is very strongly attracted to the daughter Reshma (Waheeda Rehman) of his father's rival, and she also falls in love with him when she sees how he can be strong for peace rather than for more revenge.
And yet there is a third element, the younger son of Sagat Sing, the mute Chotu (Amitabh Bachchan, who plays the role of a skilled shooter, also heavily influenced by his father). Eventually Chotu goes against the wishes of his brother in terms of not having violence and going in for peace and influenced by his father who wants Chotu to shoot the rival and his son both. And they both die; this causes Shera to hunt for his own brother to kill him. What happens next ?
How many people are there who would not have heard of this movie ? Yaadon Ki Baarat is one incredible movie, full of masala, full of some great music, with a murder, and then the quest for revenge on somebody whom the children of the killed cannot even identify, and then you have the capers of a thief (who works with somebody who is actually the killer), and you have a very enjoyable movie. And when you add a delectable Zeenat Aman, you get a really incredible movie.
The movie was made by Nasir Hussain, who produced and directed the movie. The movie starred some of the bigger stars, and some of the not so large ones, with the cast comprising of Dharmendra, Zeenat Aman, Vijay Arora, Tariq, and Neetu Singh.
The movie had some great songs, with 'Chura Liya Hain Tumne' being a song that is remembered and played even now, and music was provided by RD Burman. The script for the movie was provided by the famous pair of Javed Akhtar and Salim Khan. One lesser know fact about the movie was that it starred Aamir Khan as a cute young boy (the youngest of the 3 children shown in the movie).
The movie is a classic story about siblings separated early, when they are very young, and who meet later in life (and then realize much later that they are brothers). An artist, who defies a gang, is killed by them with the young children of the couple witnessing the murder. When running away, they get separated. They all have different life styles, with the eldest becoming a skilled burglar, the second one being a normal (not wealthy) person, and the youngest one becoming a singer. All they remember is a childhood song called 'Yaadon Ki Baarat'.
They do meet up several times but cannot associate any relationship between them; and go through various relationships (with the middle one played by Vijay Arora falling in love with Zeenat Aman after pretending to be a rich man, when his secret is out, Zeenat is shocked at the deception). The main story however is that of Shankar, the eldest one, played by Dharmendra, who is trying to find the murdered of his parents, and eventually realizes that the one whom he works for is the murderer.
The art of movie-making is inherently the art of story telling. The success (and therefore also the failure) of a film is primarily determined by the director’s ability to narrate a story well. The rest of the paraphernalia, read, music, dance, camera work, set design, costume design, sound…all of it is secondary. The immensely successful movie, Gadar-Ek Prem Katha, directed by Anil Sharma, is a superlative example of this simple fact. Many a movie has talked about love and many a movie has also talked about the Partition. So in that sense, Mr. Sharma is not telling a new story. However he has taken these two emotionally-charged elements and woven a wonderfully simple tale that leaves the viewer experience a whole gamut of emotions without being too heavy.
Gadar-Ek Prem Katha, starts off in pre-partition India. Sakeena (Amisha Patel’s soft beauty will take your breath away), a girl from a rich Muslim family is a student at a convent school in Shimla. Tara Singh (Sunny Deol, aptly cast) is a truck driver who fetches supplies to the school and nurtures a very innocent crush on her. A silly prank is the starting point of an unlikely friendship that develops between these two apparently diverse individuals. Then comes Partition and Sakeena’s family headed by Ahsraf Ali (Amrish Puri) depart for Lahore amidst growing tension between the two communities. The ensuing mindless violence that followed Partition is very sensibly captured and in one such incidence Sakeena gets left behind while her entire family boards the train to Pakistan.
Tara Singh rescues her from the clutches of sword wielding men and offers her the shelter and security of his home. After some time they marry and their love matures into a strong bond. The couple have a son and are blissfully happy. After a good seven odd years, Sakeena comes upon a picture of her father in the newspaper and she realises that her family is alive and well.
With the help of Tara Singh, Sakeena is able to re-establish contact with her father Ashraf Ali across the border. Ali is happy that his daughter is alive but is none too pleased that she is now married to a Sikh and also has a son. His devious plotting finds the sweet family torn apart-Sakeena under house arrest in Pakistan; Tara and their son waiting in India. As soon as Tara Singh is able to discover his father-in-law’s true intentions, he sets out for Pakistan to rescue his wife and bring her back home. He is supported in this endeavour by his faithful friend Darmiyan Singh and his little son. In Pakistan Tara has to face many trials and tribulations. Whether Tara is able to bring back his “Madam” (as he refers to Sakeena) forms the second half and the climax of the film.
Heartfelt acting, melodious songs and a simple narrative make this film immensely watch-able.

The movie spans across 3 countries and 2 continents. The movie starts in England where aj Malhotra and Simran Kaur (Shahrukh Khan and Kajol respectively) are living in London, with Raj being like any normal London boy, drinking, out with friends, and so on, and spoiled by his father Anupam Kher. Simran has a domineering father, convenience store owner Chaudhry Baldev Singh (Amrish Puri), who is very conservative and would not really want his daughter to have all the freedom of a girl living in London. He would want his daughter to get married to a traditional Indian man, and finds a suitable arrangement with the son of his friends. Simran finally agrees to this, but wants to first travel with friends and see the world.
In the trip, Simran bumps into Raj, who is also on a trip. She does not like him, seeing him as a uncaring person, but there is a situation in which both of them have to depend on each other. They start loving each other, but have to separate at the end of the trip. When Baldev gets to know about this from Simran, he is very angry since he considers that Simran has broken his trust, and flies off to Punjab with the family for marriage. What does Raj do ? How does he manage to persuade Baldev and marry Simran ?

The quest to have a house of one's own is a very strong impulse, capable of stirring up strong emotions in any person. Gharonda is a movie on that concept, on the quest of a young couple to have a house of their own. I was very impressed with the movie, even though the movie can leave you down a path where you feel that life can go very negative, and where events can happen that leave you feel disillusioned with life. The movie was released in 1977, and became popular as a movie with emotions, and some great music. The movie was directed and produced by Bhimsain, with some great lyrics by Gulzar and music by Jaidev. The movie starred Amol Palekar, Zarina Wahab, Shreeram Lagoo, and Jalal Agha.
Sudip (Amol Palekar) and Chaya (Zarina Wahab) are colleagues working in the same office in Mumbai. Like other middle class citizens, they drea, of owning a house in Mumbai. They are not yet married, but plan to get married when they have bought a house; and for which they paid all their lives savings. However, they are in for a shock when in a few months, the builder runs into difficulties, and all their money is lost. At around this time, their boss and the owner of the firm, Shreeram Lagoo starts getting more interested in Chaya; and then the couple make an audacious plan. Lagoo is rich, alone, and a heart patient, and they figure that he will die soon after marriage, and then Chaya will be a rich widow. Chaya is not comfortable with this idea, but accepts it after persuasion. Soon, Chaya settles in the life of a married woman, and wonders of wonders, Lagoo starts getting better. Sudip starts seeing his plan going awry, and then when Chaya scolds Sudip for visiting often, he gets puzzled. The decision point finally occurs in the end when Modi (Shreeram Lagoo) gets a heart attack, and Chaya nurses him back to health; Sudip realizes that she is gone from his life forever, and leaves.
Ijaazat means permission, and the name of the movie is based on the concept of the heroine having taking a drastic step without consulting with her husband, something that she would regret later. The movie is a very well regarded movie, based on alternative cinema. The movie is also very well known for its songs (shown later in this post), and is also distinctive that the movie gave a chance for Asha Bhosle to showcase her quite tremendous singing talents, since she sang the 4 main songs of the movie. These songs are all incredibly famous, and regarded as excellent songs both in terms of music and lyrics. The music of the film won 2 national awards. The movie did give a boost to the reputations of both Naseeruddin Shah and Rekha, although the commercial success of such a movie is always debatable. The movie was directed by Gulzar (also the lyrics, screenplay and dialogues), with music by RD Burman.

The movie works in mostly flashback mode. Mahinder (Naseeruddin Shah), on a stormy night, gets into a train waiting room; a lady sitting in the waiting room tries to avoid being seen, but eventually they meet. The lady is Sudha (Rekha), and when they see each other, the flashback starts. They were married to each other earlier, but that relationship broke because of the presence of another girl in Mahinder's life. Mahinder used to love a girl called Maya (Anuradha Patel), a free living feminist. However, it was impossible for Mahinder to marry her since his grandfather (Shammi Kapoor) would never have allowed this. His grandfather had found Sudha, a school teacher, for him, and even though the engagement has stretched to 5 years, it was pretty clear that the marriage could happen anytime. This was something that Mahinder told Sudha about as well, with the understanding that Maya would never come between them. However, it seemed to Sudha that Maya had such an important part in Mahinder's life that her presence was always there. The situation escalates, till there is a time when Sudha feels that Mahinder has deserted her for Maya and she laves without telling Mahinder. In the meantime, when Mahinder gets to know, he suffers a heart attack, with Maya taking care of him. Soon after, Maya dies when her scarf gets entangled in the wheel of the motorcycle that she was driving. In the present time, when Sudha gets to know these events, she is shocked, since it would seem to be that she had left without ascertaining the complete facts, and this had changed her life. And then her husband, Shashi Kapoor comes in, and she leaves with him, this time taking the permission (Ijaazat) of Mahinder, unlike the previous time.

With the success of Munnabhai MBBS, it was clear that there would be a sequel, it was just waiting for the sequel to come. And so came the sequel in 2006, called Lage Raho Munnabhai (carry on Munnabhai). The movie starred the main set of 2 characters, Munnabhai (Sanjay Dutt) and his sidekick Circuit (Arshad Warsi). The movie showcases the story of a ruffian who becomes infused with Gandhian ideals (under the influence of the spirit of Gandhi), and tries to share the same with others around him, mixed with a Mumbai type way of speaking. Sanjay Dutt is Munnabhai, a Mumbai don who indulges in the familiar show of force, and employs muscles to get his work done. He is also infatuated with a local radio jockey Janhavi (Vidya Balan) and wants to get to meet her. However, how to get a ruffian to meet a beautiful radio jockey is not easy to visualize, and then he hears of a contest where the first person to answer multiple questions asked by her gets to meet her. The contest is about answering questions on Mahatma Gandhi (Bapu), and this is where the mix with Gandhian ideology starts to happen.
How does a local hood answer questions about Mahatma Gandhi ? Well, he does this by kidnapping a group of professors by force, and then asking them to answer the questions (and of course, if a professor answers the question correctly, he would get a prize). So, Munnabhai gets the answers correctly, and being highly nervous, manages to make it to the radio station to meet his lady love. He presents himself as an expert in Gandhian ideology, and impresses her to the extent that she takes him with her to present a lecture on Gandhian philosophy to a community of senior citizens (after taking a massive crash course in Gandhian ideology). In this time period, Gandhi appears to him and offers to help him, as long as Munnabhai does everything that Gandhi asks him to do. And so starts the experiment of a underworld don with Gandhi's spirits, in which he comes much closer to Janhavi and even hosts a radio problem along with her where he expounds the logic of Gandhian ideals and offers to solve the problems of people. And it is here that the movie is mesmerizing, bringing forth the ideals of Gandhi's truths in various stories; the story about the guy who loses his father's money in the stock market and is contemplating suicide, and who calls Munnabhai as a lost soul is incredible, heart moving. The solution is typically Gandhian. The twist in the main plot is of course the builder Lucky Singh (Boman Irani) who wants to get the old people evicted from the house so that he can gift the house to his daughter's future father-in-law Kulbhushan Kharbanda. He employs Munnabhai and Circuit to get this done, and uses a time when Munnabhai has gone with Janhavi and the old folks to Goa, with circuit emptying the house (not knowing that this was something that Munnabhai would not have wanted). When Munnabhai gets back, he is shocked, but Lucky Singh is unwilling to give the house back. And so starts the attempt by Munnabhai to use Gandhian philosophy to force Lucky Singh to give the house back - in the midst of this, Munnabhai is forced to confront the truth and tell Janhavi all about himself and the truth (and of course she leaves him). However, it is this Gandhigiri that allows Munnabhai to eventually win out and use the power of truth to solve his problems. The movie inspired a large number of people to adopt Gandhian practices to try to solve their problems.

How many people are there who would not have seen Parinda (well, atleast if you take people who are more than 30 years old). Parinda was not director Vidhu Vinod Chopra's first movie, but if there are some movies that he will be most remembered by, it will be for this movie. Similarly, both Anil Kapoor and Madhuri Dixit have reckoned that this movie is one of their best movies. The movie was produced and directed by Vidhu Vinod Chopra, written by Shivkumar Subramaniam, and starred Jackie Shroff, and Nana Patekar in pivotal roles. Music was by R D Burman, and lyrics by Khursheed Hallauri. Some other actors who had great roles in the movies were Tom Alter, Anupam Kher, and Suresh Oberoi.
The movie was released in 1989. It tells the gripping story of the Bombay underworld, the fight between the rival gangs, the lack of trust and warfare between them, the role of the police. In the end, the movie was about the guy who got involved in a gang for survival, and who learns the hard way that life in the gang is brutal. In the end, everybody is expendable, life is brutal; and even a loyal member of the gang cannot save his own brother. The reason why the movie was so popular was due to its realism, essentially attributed to the technical crew of the film, with Binod Pradhan´s cinematography being a great hit. The overall sound of the movie, the shots with the pigeons, the mad gun shooting amid the honeymoon lovemaking, the various deaths in the movie, the climatic scene where Jackie Shroff kills his own boss (and the killer of his brother) by burning him to death in a fire of alcohol bottles, all of these were shots that still enthrall people. The movie is about the love between the 2 brothers, Jackie and Anil. When they were young and fighting for survival, Jackie joins Anna's gang and prospers. He sends Anil out for studying, with Anil all the time unaware that his brother actually worked for a gang leader (and too, a psychotic one). Jackie tries to keep his brother away from the gang, but eventually fails when Anil's friend, Inspector Anupam Kher is killed by Anna's men (using the meeting called by Anil). Madhuri Dixit is Paro, a teacher, who is in love with Anil, but moves away when she learns that he is now part of the gang. The rest of the movie is about the revenge taken by Anil, the consequences when Anna learns about this, and the reaction of Jackie. This movie is a must watch.

Sometimes you come across a movie that shakes you a lot, and which leaves a promise that there is a space for movie making that is different from the standard cliches, or romances, or manufactured tragedies. 'A Wednesday' is a movie that I got around to watching much after the movie was released, and I was thoroughly impressed. You may not agree with everything that the movie propounds, but you cannot be but impressed by the pace of the movie, by some superb acting from the various stars, by the ability to leave you sympathizing with a person who directs acts of murder, and eventually admiring the director, Neeraj Pandey, who dared to make a movie with no main female lead in a romantic situation, and most of all, a movie without any songs. The movie certainly was not a rich action sequences laden movie such as 'Singh in King', but given a choice, I would rather watch a movie like 'A Wednesday'. This was a movie that gained extremely from word of mouth, colleagues who had seen the movie gave enthusiastic reviews, and I would do the same if somebody asked me.
Without revealing the end, the twist in the movie as well as the impassioned speech by the bomb maker comes at the end of a gripping movie, and keep you on your seats till the final credits come to an end. The performances by Anupam Kher, Naseeruddin Shah, Jimmy Shergill and Deepal Shaw are all first rate, and the fact that they are able to make their presence felt in such a short movie (1.5) hours makes the performances even more creditable. The movie also introduces the concept of a backlash by the 'stupid, common man'; all of us who live in a city and go to our work places, and some of whom die in bomb blasts that happen in our cities. The movie is about the flashback by a retired police commissioner of Bombay, Prakash Rathod [Anupam Kher]. He remembers an incident that happened in the space of 4 hours, on a normal weekday afternoon, the details of the incident not being present on any file or records (only in the memory of those involved). He gets a call from an anonymous caller about bombs kept in the city at different locations, and for defusing which, 4 Muslim terrorists in police custody needed to be rounded up from their separate locations. The caller, Naseeruddin Shah, situated on the top of a building, almost like a picnic, makes the police believe in his story when he discloses the location of a bomb right in the police station next to the police headquarters. Anupam Kher gets complete authority from the Chief Minister to handle the negotiations, and gets down to business. He is obviously dealing with a person who knows how to conduct himself, defeating attempts to track his details. Eventually, inspite of a crack team and some fast police work, spear headed by a hot headed police officer (Jimmy Shergill in a great role), Anupam Kher is forced to follow all of the directions he is given, till the time that the terrorists are transported to an air field in Juhu. If you have not watched the movie, you should watch it.
When me and the spouse were debating which movie to watch, I was thinking of Kismet Connection, and the spouse was thinking of 'Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na'; of course we watched the movie that the spouse wanted to watch. Well, I don't regret it one bit. I thoroughly enjoyed the movie, and I was still laughing 10 minutes after the movie even though it was already 1 AM in the morning when I came out of the movie hall. I was very impressed after watching this movie, and will recommend it to anyone wanting to watch a nice movie, full of comedy, with some great acting. The movie was made under the banner of Aamir Khan, produced by Aamir and Mansoor Khan, and directed by Abbas Tyrewala; lyrics were also by Abbas, and the great music was by A R Rehman. The film introduced Aamir's nephew Imran Khan (Jai Singh Rathore) and also starred the pretty new Genelia D'Souza (Aditi Mahant) in lead roles. However, it was not only these, there were a host of other actors who played small and large roles, and were fairly significant in these roles: Karan Makhija (playing Rotlu), Nirav Mehta (Jiggy), Alishka Varde (Bombs), Pratik Babbar (brother of Genelia, Amit Mahant), Manjari Phadnis (Meghna, girlfriend of Imran for some time); and then you had the senior artists - Anuradha Patel, Jayant Kripalani (Aditi's parents), Ratna Pathak Shah (playing Jai's mother), Naseeruddin Shah (playing the deceased Amar Singh Rathore, Jai's father), Kitu Gidwani, Rajat Kapoor (Meghna's father), Arbaaz Khan (Bhaloo), Sohail Khan (Baghera), and Paresh Rawal as Inspector Waghmare.
This is a pretty huge cast, but the thing is, you got to feel that almost everybody got a role to play in making the movie what it was. Imraan and Genelia were playing the lead roles, but the entire supporting cast also had some good parts to play. Probably the least utilized were Kitu Gidwani and Rajat Kapoor, since they got maybe 5 minutes, but an artist like Ratna Pathak Shah got a great role. The movie rolls around the story of Jai and Aditi, very good friends in college and their gang. It is told in the form of a flashback. Their college life is about to end, and everybody assumes that such good friends will want to spend their life together, being in love and all that. However, they vehemently deny all this, and decide that they will get each other a mate so that such impressions are shelved. Jai is a total non-fighting character, since his mother has raised him that way, telling him that his father was a total peace-loving person and that is how he must always be like (in reality, his father was a hard core aggressive person who died in a battle with a rival clan). Aditi finds a person for Jai; finding Meghna in a bar where he saves her from 2 hooligans in the shape of Arbaaz and Sohail Khan. Meghna and Jai start becoming close to each other, and the inevitable had to happen. Aditi finds out that she did indeed love Jai, and starts feeling extremely jealous. Soon, Aditi is also introduced to her father's friend Sushant Modi, and they get engaged; Sushant is a much more impressive personality, and also very aggressive. He also has a whole line of old conquests. What happens to the relationship between Aditi and Jai, given that they are now involved with other people, and yet love each other.

Kabhi Kabhi Aditi Zindagi (Sung by Rashid Ali)
Kabhi Kabhi Aditi Zindagi Me Yun Hi Koi Apna Lagta Hai Kabhi Kabhi Aditi Woh Bichad Jaaye Toh Ek Sapna Lagta Hai
Aise Me Koi Kaise Apne Aansuon Ko Behnay Se Roke Aur Kaise Koi Sochle Ki Everything'S Gonna Be Okay
Kabhi Kabhi Toh Lage Zindagi Me Rahi Na Khushi Aur Na Maza Kabhi Kabhi Toh Lage Har Din Mushkil Aur Har Pal Ek Saza
Aise Me Koi Kaise Muskuraaye, Kaise Has De Khush Hoke Aur Kaise Koi Sochle Ki Everything'S Gonna Be Okay
Soch Zara Jan-E-Jaan Tujh Ko Hum Kitna Chahte Hain Rotay Hain Hum Bhi Agar Tere Aankhon Me Aansun Aate Hain
Gaana Toh Aata Nahi Hai Magar Phir Bhi Hum Gaate Hain Hey Aditi Maan Kabhi--Kabhi Saare Jahan Me Andhera Hota Hai
Lekin Raat Ke Baad Hi Toh Savera Hota Hai
Kabhi Kabhi Aditi Zindagi Me Yun Hi Koi Apna Lagta Hai Kabhi Kabhi Aditi Woh Bichar Jaye Toh Ek Sapna Lagta Hai
Hey Aditi Has De Has De Has De Has De Has De Has De Tu Zara Nahi Toh Bas Thoda Thoda Thoda Thoda Thoda Thoda Muskura
Tu Khush Hai Toh Lage Kay Jahan Main Chaiyi Hai Khushi Sooraj Nikle Baadalon Se Aur Bantay Zindagi
Sun Toh Zara Madhosh Hawa--Tujhse Kehne Lagi Ki Aditi Woh Jo Bichadte Hain Ik Na Ik Din Phir Mil Jate
Yeh Aditi Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na Phool Phir Khil Jate Hain Kabhi Kabhi Aditi Zindagi Me Yun Hi Koi Apna Lagta Hai
Kabhi Kabhi Aditi Who Bichad Jaye Toh Ek Sapna Lagta Hai Hey Aditi Has De Has De Has De Has De Has De Has De Tu Zara -- 5X
Nahi Toh Bas Thoda Thoda Thoda Thoda Thoda Thoda Muskura -- 5X

Hum Hain Rahi Pyaar Ke was a delightful movie, no doubts whatsoever. A story that combined a love story with the sensitive elements of trying to bring up kids who have lost their parents was superb. The movie had some excellent performances by the lead pair of Aamir Khan and Juhi Chawla; with other noteworthy performances by Dalip Tahil, and the 3 kids (Master Sharokh, Kunal Khemu and Baby Ashrafa) turned in some great performances. The movie was released in 1993, directed by Mahesh Bhat and produced by Tahir Hussain. The movie was written by Robin Bhatt, Aamir Khan and Sujit Sen, and had music by Nadeem-Shravan; lyrics were by Sameer. It was a fairly successful hit (although the Best Actor award for the year went to Shahrukh Khan for Baazigar). What lent the story great appeal was the sensitive treatment of the behaviour of the kids, how the eldest moves towards maturity and wants to start getting treatment like an adult; how the kids understand through an example that they should treat others the same way they want to get treated, and how through love and understanding, it is possible to bond with children (even those who have had the emotional scarring of losing their parents).
The movie stars on a sombre note with Aamir Khan suddenly being responsible for the upbringing of the children of his sister (both their parents having died in an accident). They also have a small clothes factory which is currently in trouble, having run out of working capital and seemingly not in a position to meet their order committments. At such a time, in a fit of defiance, the kids go to a circus (which was promised to them, and later denied) and from there, bring home Vaijyanti (Juhi Chawla). Juhi is the daughter of a rich South Indian person, but has run away from home to avoid getting married to a musician. And so starts the fun. She hides in their home, and is soon discovered by Aamir who hires her to be the governess of the kids. She starts bringing the kids and Aamir closer to each other, and they slowly start understanding each other. In the meantime, Aamir also meets up with Maya (Navneet Nishan) who loves Aamir and is coincidentally the daughter of Seth Bignani (who essentially holds Aamir's factory in debt). In order to secure the future, Aamir agrees to marry Maya. But he has not reckoned with the fact that both Vaijyanti and he love each other, and so he breaks his engagement with Maya. Now he has very little time to meet the order, and he does so through an emotional appeal at the factory, and through some martial arts in the end (with a comical touch). A must see movie.

Tum Bin was a movie that was released in 2001, and was a pretty low budget and low profile movie. It turned out to be the sleeper movie, becoming a much loved movie by the audience and a big hit. The songs, as well as the storyline caught a lot of attention (this was after not a classical tale of romance against the odds or a similar such formula), instead a story of an anguished semi-guilty man trying to make amends for what he has done to another family by killing their chief hope; and then the guilt of what he has done preventing him from trying to fulfill his hopes and ambitions, and his love. In addition, the same sense of shock and distraught feeling causes the heroine to back away from love and more towards responsibility. This was a story of emotions, and truly a good story (even though there were some deficiencies in the story). The movie was produced by Super Cassettes industries (Bhushan Kumar & Krishan Kumar), and directed by newbie director Anubhav Sinha, who also wrote the script and the dialogues. The movie also stars newcomers Sandali Sinha (Piya) and Priyanshu Chatterjee (Shekhar Malhotra), and these 2 gave a good portrayal in their roles that demanded a fair amount of emotion (they have not managed to do too well after this initial good start). They are supported ably by some good casting comprising of Rakesh Bapat, Himanshu Malik, Navneet Nishan, Rajendra Gupta, Dina Pathak and Vrijesh Hirjee. The movie is about the changes that occur in the life of Shekhar when he accidentally kills Amar Shah (Rakesh) in the beginning of the movie and seeks to go to Canada to admit his guilt and seek forgiveness from Rakesh's family. There he admits his guilt to Amar's dad who is numb and paralyzed by shock - the family is totally devastated, his sister is specially in shock. Piya, Amar's sweetheart is trying to keep the family and business together, but is finding it difficult. Shekhar literally forces himself into the company and spends his entire energy in getting the business working again. Over a period of time, they start getting close and he also starts getting close to the family, helping reduce some of their guilt. Then they meet Abhi (Himanshu), a successful businessman who works with them and finds himself in love with Piya. Shekhar, still in guilt over his role in the death, tries to move back when he sees this happening and believes that his work is over. He also starts to create a distance between himself and Piya (including giving a moving speech at the shareholders meeting when Piya attempts to merge the company with Abhi's company). Things start to move faster in the script at this stage. The cop, investigating Amar's death with a passion, finally reaches Canada and arrests Shekhar; and Shekhar also admits his role to Piya over the phone (when Piya is about to be engaged to Abhi). Shekhar then has an accident, in which he was very grievously injured. This is when Piya realizes that she was totally in love with Shekhar, and the family also needs him. They finally accept him.

Koyi Fariyaad Tere Dil main
Koyi Fariyaad Tere Dil Mein Dabi Ho Jaise Koyi Fariyaad Tere Dil Mein Dabi Ho Jaise Tune Aankhon Se Koyi Baat Kahi Ho Jaise Jaagte Jaagte Ek Umr Kati Ho Jaise Jaagte Jaagte Ek Umr Kati Ho Jaise Jaan Baaki Baaki Hai Magar Saas Ruki Ho Jaise
Jaanta Hoon Aapko Sahare Ki Zarurat Nahin Main Sirf Saath Dene Aaya Hoon
Har Mulaakat Pe Mehsoos Yehi Hota Hai Har Mulaakat Pe Mehsoos Yehi Hota Hai Mujhse Kuch Teri Nazar Pooch Rahi Ho Jaise
Raah Chalte Huve Aksar Yeh Ghumaan Hota Hai Raah Chalte Huve Aksar Yeh Ghumaan Hota Hai Woh Nazar Chupke Mujhe Dekh Rahi Ho Jaise Woh Nazar Chupke Mujhe Dekh Rahi Ho Jaise
Ek Lamhe Mein Simat Aaya Hai Sadiyon Ka Safar Ek Lamhe Mein Simat Aaya Hai Sadiyon Ka Safar Zindagi Tej Bahut Tej Chali Ho Jaise Zindagi Tej Bahut Tej Chali Ho Jaise
Is Tarah Pehron Tujhe Sochta Rehta Hoon Main Is Tarah Pehron Tujhe Sochta Rahta Hoon Main Meri Har Saas Tere Naam Likhi Ho Jaise Meri Har Saas Tere Naam Likhi Ho Jaise
Koyi Fariyaad Tere Dil Mein Dabi Ho Jaise Tune Aankhon Se Koyi Baat Kahi Ho Jaise Jaagte Jaagte Ek Umr Kati Ho Jaise Jaan Baaki Baaki Hai Magar Saas Ruki Ho Jaise
