Mere Baap Pehle Aap (Released in 2008) - Trying to get Dad married - Can be missed, even though from Priyadarshan

It was a good cast, starring Akshaye Khanna, Paresh Rawal, Om Puri, Genelia D'Souza and Shobhana, out of whom almost all are known for good performances. And Priyadarshan has made some good comedies in the past, so it was a bit surprising that one good into such a non-interesting movie. The concept can be pretty good, with a great father-son partnership, the father trying to get his son married to the beautiful girl, while the son is trying to get the father married off to the mother of the girl, who is also coincidentally his old girlfriend. Can be interesting, right ? Well, not quite. Modern comedies try to put a lot of different incidents into a movie, hoping that the series of gags or incidents eventually ensure that the audience likes the movie and feel satisfied.
Now to the reality of the movie - this movie attempts to get a bit serious, or so the story tries to do in between. And in between, there are some sort of gags - but imagine wasting such stars such as Om Puri (portrayed as a comic skirt-chaser - why did he take such a role?), Sobhana (restricted to wearing good sarees and sniffing or making faces), or even Paresh Rawal (who has played comic roles in a great way in movies such as Hungama, but who does not get any comic roles in this movie); you get the idea. Maybe the idea was to change their personas in the movie, different from how they are regularly portrayed; would have been appreciated if the movie had worked, but it did not. It did not earn much at the box office either. The movie has music by Vidyasagar and Tauseef Akhtar.

So what is the story about (spoiler alert) ? Well, there is this widower Janaradhan Wishvanbhar Rane (played by Paresh Rawal), he has 2 sons Chirag (Manoj Joshi) and Gaurav (played by Akshaye Khanna). Janardhan has played a good father to his sons, bringing them up in a good manner; and over a period of time, his son Gaurav has gone to become very protective of his father; to the effect that it seems that Gaurav is the father, not his father. He is extra protective because of the presence of his father's dear friend, Madhav Mathur (played by Om Puri). Madhav, in the search for a bride who is not yet over-the-hill, gets into regular escapades and Gaurav has to get them out of trouble.
Gaurav now gets in touch with a lady, an old college friend Sheekha Kapoor (played by Genelia D'Souza), who in turn is staying with her guardian Anuradha (played by Shobhana). When Gaurav and Sheekha see Janardhan and Anuradha meeting, it seems strained, and they find out that both were in an old relationship; with this, Gaurav changes his mind and decides that his father should get married to this old companion; it also seems to his father that Sheekha is an ideal bride for his son; and so it gets confused. Who gets married to whom ?

Woodstock Villa (Released in 2008) - Suspense film, but can be missed

Suspense films have several criteria that they need to meet. They should have great performances, they should be taut and with a quickly moving story, the scenes in the movie should make sense (even though the story and occurrences in a suspense movie will be out of the ordinary), the music and background score should make sense, and at the end, the viewer should feel that the story progression made sense. If a movie fails at several of these points, then it is difficult to praise a movie, but at the same time, the performance by the lead actor (played by Sikander Kher) is creditable and one of the few plus points of this movie. The movie stars Arbaaz Khan, Neha Oberoi, and a few other stars such as Gulshan Grover, Shakti Kapoor, Sachin Khedekar, etc. The movie had music by Anu Malik, and Virag Mishra.
The movie is made by the White Feather Films and is directed by Hansal Mehta, but suffers from problems such as a loud score, and the biggest problem being the story that does not seem to make sense through the movie, especially post the interval (and the interval is interesting, given that the movie is only 90 minutes long). This is the undoing of the movie, especially the fact that viewers do not appreciate the movie - and the reviews by critics at the time of the release of the movie were pretty harsh.

So what is the story of the movie all about ? Well, you have this down on luck guy, Sam (played by Sikander Kher), who is without a job (you don't far if you sleep with the wife of your boss), who owes rent on his flat and also owes money to a bad guy (Gulshan Grover); he needs a lot of money. And what does he find ? He meets this lady Zara (played by Neha Uberoi) in a disco, who tells him that she wants to test her husband's love for her, this husband being Jatin (played by Arbaaz Khan). So she tells Sam to kidnap her and demand a huge ransom. Now, since he so much needs money, Sam decides to go ahead, and that is where things start to go wrong.
He goes with her to a place called Woodstock Villa, and when he is out, Zara gets killed in the meantime; something that Sam comes back and sees, and is panic stricken. He gets a phone call that he has 30 minutes to clean up the mess, and so he buries the body in the forest and cleans up. It is later that he sees Zara in a video and comes back to the city to know the truth. He finds Zara and gets the truth from her, and the truth is very different from what he had experienced so far. There was a Zara and there was a Jatin, but the body he had buried, and the girl he was in touch with, one of them was Zara and the other was somebody forced to step into the role. How does he resolve this ? There is suspense, but some of the parts of the story are not so readily believable; and that loud score in the movie ? It needs to be done well to work well, but really does not.

Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani (released in 2009) - A comedy starring Katrina Kaif against Ranbir Kapoor

Rajkumar Santoshi used to make serious movies in an earlier avatar, and made movies such as Ghayal and Damini, powerful movies. However, he also made some incredible comedies such as Andaz Apna Apna, and this movie, "Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani", was another in those line of comedies. The movie starred a couple that seemed a bit strange, namely two young superstars in the form of Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif. The movie was a wacky comedy, which turned out to be a huge hit, being the third biggest hit on 2009 (difficult to compete with a movie such as 3 Idiots).
The movie starred the following: Ranbir Kapoor, Katrina Kaif, and Upen Patel. The movie shows them as perfectly normal people, with Ranbir and Katrina both suffering from a stammer, which can make things difficult. It's Upen who is the super-rich, and who is also made to appear as a fool in the movie. The movie had some good music by Pritam Chakraborty, and was produced by Ramesh S Taurani. The movie did not show too many serious situations, and even the confrontations in the movie were handled in a light manner. The movie also won some favorable ratings from critics and got Ranbir a Filmfare award for Best Actor.

The movie showcased some great chemistry between the lead pair of Ranbeer and Katrina. The movie stars Ranbeer as Prem, a happy go lucky person, who is always ready to help others and who is the head of a Happy Club, one that tries to make others happy. He comes into contact with Katrina (Jenny) when he kidnaps her by mistake, and falls in love with her. However, he realizes that she is not for him, since she loves somebody else, the rich Upen Patel (Rahul), who is the son of a politician.
Even though his friends urge him otherwise, he decides to get them married to each other, with the complication being that Rahul's father does not want his son to get married to Katrina. And there is the funny mobster who wants to get money from Rahul's father and tries various schemes for the same. The rest of the movie is about resolving all this complication, and does Prem really get Jenny in the end ?

Love Aaj Kal - a different love story starring Saif Ali Khan and Deepika Padukone (released in 2009)

Love Aaj Kal was a love story released in 2009, produced by Saif Ali Khan as his first movie as a producer, and paid him rich dividends, becoming a fairly big hit. The movie starred essentially 4 people in 2 parallel love tracks (separated by a generation), Rishi Kapoor, Saif Ali Khan, Deepika Padukone and a Brazilian newcomer, Giselli Monteiro. The music of the movie was also well appreciated, with songs such as Twist, Chor Bazaari, Dooriyan, and Aaj Din Chadheya becoming big musical hits. The music for the movie was by Pritam (lyrics by Irshad Kamil). The movie was directed by Imtiaz Ali (who also had a previous big hit in the form of Jab We Met).
The movie was a story of breakup and meeting, set in a very modern generation, where people concentrate on their careers, and contrasts this with a storyline that was set a generation back, where the person would do a lot for love, and base their decisions and their actions on love (and in the end, the conclusion of the movie is that the power of love still makes people do things even when they feel that they are driving their own decisions).

The movie is the story of Jai and Meera, who are a modern couple in London, and parallel to this, the movie also tells the story of Veer Singh and Harleen (from the past). Jai and Meera (Saif and Deepika) are in London, where they meet and become a couple. However, they have career needs that they realize will take them in different directions, with Meera interested in conservation, taking her to India, and Jai being an architect, working for the Golden Gate firm in San Francisco. They decide that they cannot be together, and have a separation party, deciding to move on with their own life. They do however, decide to remain very much in contact, and with the power of modern communications, it could be that they remain very close to each other. When Meera is leaving, Jai comes in contact with Veer Singh, who is surprised that Jai is letting Meera go like this, and tells him the story of how he fought for Harleen (in a sepia tinged story), whom he liked but did not get a chance to speak to much.
Now, Jai and Meera are living their own lives, with Jai involved with a blonde in London, while Meera has received an offer from her boss, and finally decides to accept his romance. In between, Jai pays a visit to Meera and they have a lot of fun together, but things get serious when Vikram (Meera's boss) proposes to her; Meera is confused because she still has feelings for Jai, and she and Jai have an argument (with Meera telling Jai that they should stop being in touch with each other).
And then Meera marries Vikram, still confused. Jai comes there, and in a remarkable coincidence, he gets an offer from the Golden Gate. In the meantime, Meera realizes her marriage was a mistake, and tries to get in touch with Jai but realizes that he is incredibly happy over going to San Francisco and does not say anything more to him. He enjoys his stay in San Francisco, but over a period of time, this excitement starts falling and he starts to feel depressed. It takes a mugging for him to realize that he is actually missing Meera, and he rushes back to Delhi even though he knows that Meera is married. When he reaches here, he realizes that Meera and Vikram are no longer married, and he has an emotional reunion with Meera at her site.

Dushman (released in 1998) - A great movie directed by Tanuja Chandra, and starring Kajol, Sanjay Dutt, and Ashutosh Rana

For some time now, the concept of villains in Hindi Movies has undergone a transformation. With the depiction of the angry young man by Amitabh Bachchan who acts as a rebel, and then the villain played by Shahrukh Khan in the 3 movies he did on a trop (Baazigar, Darr and Anjaam), a villain came to be a seen as a person who became a villain due to circumstances, and that there were shades of grey (rather than a pure Black and White) in the depiction of a villain. And then came this movie which showcased a pure villain, who had no real reasons that could give a reason as to why they became a villain; just pure lust that could turn a person into capable of killing. The movie was the debut movie of director Tanuja Chandra, and gave her a good reputation. The movie had music by Uttam Singh, with an incredible sad song by Jasjit Singh (Chithi Na Koi Sandesh).
The movie had some good performances by Kajol (in a double role), Sanjay Dutt (as a blind major), and Ashutosh Rana as the cold blooded killer who can kill without mercy and who can create the total sense of fear in Kajol.

The movie shows the life of twin sisters, Sonia and Naina Sehgal (both played by Kajol). Sonia is more of an extrovert, and is in a relationship with Jas Arora (with both of them committed to marry each other); Naina is more of the introvert - and both of them are deeply in love with each other. And then there is the postman, Gokul, who rapes and kills without mercy and whom the police is hunting. And then the unthinkable happens, with Gokul finding Sonia alone at home when he comes to deliver something, and then he does rape and kill her. This is a horrible tragedy for the family, and they are not able to take this loss.
Naina wants to find who the killer is, and is soon very suspicious of Gokul, and even gets the police to question him. However, Gokul is able to use a social worker to get the police to get off his case and is again free. There is also a nurse who is in love with Gokul, but when she gets inconvenient, he even bumps her off in a forest type of scenario. In the meantime, Naina has come in touch with a blind major (war hero), Suraj Singh Rathod (Sanjay Dutt), who tries to give her courage.
Now, Gokul wants to take revenge on Naina, since he believes that she has got the police on his back and is a threat to him, and this leads to the final confrontation between Naina and Gokul.

Sholay (1975) - One of the greatest Indian movie hits of all time

When you think of great Hindi movies, one of the names that always comes to the front is the movie called Sholay, released in 1975. The movie seems like it was set in another age, it being now 35 years since it was released and became a huge hit; and is now a cult movie. If it comes on TV even now, you can be sure that there will be some people who will want to watch. And the movie created a set of characters who became incredibly famous, specifically the few characters of Gabbar (Amjad Khan), Thakur (Sanjeev Kumar), Jai (Amitabh Bachchan), Veeru (Dharmendra), and Basanti (Hema Malini), and the under-played role of Radha (played by Jaya Bachchan).
The movie took a chance, starring a newcomer in the pivotal role of the dacoit leader (Danny was the original choice, but he was unavailable, and hence a newcomer such as Amjad Khan was selected). The movie was based on a small idea by the prolific writer duo of Salim-Javed. And the outcome was a movie that broke all records, and became a cult movie known till today.

The movie was produced by G.P. Sippy and directed by his son Ramesh Sippy. Music for the film was given by RD Burman, with the lyrics provided by Anand Bakshi. During direction, the movie went over-budget, since the director wanted to be perfect in the shooting, and many of the shots took many takes and many days. The movie also had real-life relations between the stars, with Amitabh and Jaya getting married 4 months before shooting of the movie started, and Dharmendra romancing Hema Malini at that time. The movie took a period of 2.5 years to make. The movie also had an effect on tourism, with the location of Ramanagaram (a rocky terrain), a village near Bangalore, Karnataka being the shooting site, and being known later as the location where Sholay was shot.
The movie was based on the concept of revenge, where a local dacoit terrorises the village, and also takes revenge on the family of the local thakur. The Thakur in turn hires 2 small-time but brave crooks to come in to fight the dacoit and his gang, and this is what they do, but with some sadness, as one of the 2 loses his life in the end.
The movie takes these 2 small time crooks (Jai and Veeru) in a jail. They are remembered by an ex-policeman, the Thakur, when he is looking for somebody who can help him fight the dacoits (led by Gabbar). He had apprehended them, and then see how brave they were when they fought off dacoits who were trying to rob a train. He meets them, and offers them a large amount of money if they can get rid of Gabbar and his gang. Gabbar is a violent and brutal dacoit leader who is terrorising the villages.
In the first confrontation, three men from Gabbar's gang come to get supplies from the villagers, something that they do without any issue in the past. Now, however, they face a fight from Jai and Veeru and have to go back without any supplies; at which Gabbar cannot stand the sight of his men being humiliated in front of the village and shoots them after some drama (in a scene that was much appreciated). The next major attack is on Holi, during which Jai and Veeru are pinned down and are looking for Thakur to throw a gun towards them, but he does not cooperate. Later his story is revealed, where he had arrested Gabbar some time back, and then Gabbar killed all his family except for one daughter-in-law Radha (Jaya Bhaduri). And in another confrontation, Gabbar cut off both his hands leaving him without any hands.
So, the situation continues, with Jai and Veeru staying in the village, and getting fond of Radha and Basanti respectively. Gabbar has cut off the village from the outside, but they fight back by killing some of his men. And then the final confrontation, where the fight with Gabbar and his men take place, in which Jai finally dies.

Nishabd - An experiment based on Lolita starring Amitabh Bachchan (2007)

Nishabd the film directed by Ram Gopal Verma is his take on Nabokov’s famous novel Lolita. The subject matter of the novel is such (a middle aged man lusting after a twelve year old girl, it was paedophilic in its stance) that it raised eyebrows and caused a lot of controversy even in the progressive western societies. For Verma to take this idea and attempt to make a Hindi movie based on it is definitely a laudable effort. However he did do away with the paedophile angle as that would have been too much for commercial Hindi cinema. The rest of the older man-much younger woman story remains the same.

The film begins with a young called Ritu (Shraddha Arya) inviting her close friend Jia (Jiah Khan) to spend the holidays with her at her home in God’s own country, Kerala. Riut’s parents Vijay (Amitabh Bachchan) and Amrita (Revathu) have been married for twenty seven years and have a beautiful home in the midst of picturesque settings. They have a vast estate and Vijay is a photographer. Amrita, who was an accomplished Kuchipudi dancer, gave up her passion to look after the family. Into this idyllic set up enters Jia who comes from a broken family and lives with her mother in Brisbane. Jia comes across as a free spirit who is not too bothered by societal rules and norms.

One lazy day Vijay catches a glimpse of Jia playing with the water hose and that turns his world upside down. He feels himself inexplicably drawn to this young girl who is his daughter’s age. Jia too feels a pull towards a man old enough to be his father. Initially Vijay tries to fight off this unspoken attraction but soon he gives in and the two get close to each other. Ritu stumbles upon this illicit relation and tries to make Jia leave her house without her mother finding out the truth. But she fails. Around this time, Amrita’s brother Shridhar (Nassar) visits them. He also discovers the disturbing truth about Vijay and Jia. He questions his brother-in-law about the seriousness of the affair and find things are pretty serious. Soon Vijay confesses his love for Jia to Amrita, which leaves her shattered. However Vijay convinces Jia that he has no love for her because he realises that at the end of the day he is indeed too old for her. Jia leaves with Rishi, a close friend of hers, heartbroken. Ritu leaves for the US angry with her father and Amrita is determined never to forgive her husband. Having lost his love and his family, Vijay drives to a cliff to end his life. But does he? Watch the film to find out the answer.

Black - starring Rani Mukherji and Amitabh Bachchan (2005)

Black that released in the year 2005, amidst tremendous hype and expectations, managed to set a new benchmark for Hindi films. Partly based on the true life story of Helen Keller, the film was tremendously appreciated by the critics and the general public. Hailed by many to be a cult film Black won numerous awards for all those who were associated with it.

The film begins with Michelle McNally (Rani Mukherjee) a blind, deaf and mute woman visiting her former teacher Debraj Sahai (Amitabh Bachchan). Debraj is shown to be in a hospital struggling with the deadly Alzheimer’s disease. The film then goes back to Michelle’s childhood. Michelle’s world from a very young age has been a world that is devoid of sights, colours, sounds and noises. With the passage of time, she becomes a prisoner of this soundless and sightless universe that makes her violent, hostile, and almost animal like. Her parents, Paul and Catherine are at their wit’s end trying to control their eight year old daughter whom they are unable to understand and who is unable to understand them. Into this helpless situation enters Debraj Sahai, a slightly eccentric man. He takes it upon himself to bring Michelle into the light.

Initially he has to use harsh methods as Michelle has become uncontrollable which meets the disapproval of the little girl’s father who asks him to leave. But Debraj asks for twenty days from Catherine to prove himself and stays on. By the 20th day, as he is about to give up, a miraculous break through happens and Michelle is able to come out of her dark world. Impressed by his success the McNallys decide to keep Debraj as Michelle's teacher. Michelle is a fast learner and is very soon able to expertly sign. Debraj even convinces the Principal of a college to grant her the chance to pursue Bachelor of Arts degree, the first deaf-blind person to do so at that university. Michelle moves away from home and lives with Debraj and one of her servants.

Over the next twenty years she struggles to gain her degree. As Michelle face many ups and downs in life, we see the beginning of Alzheimer affect Debraj’s brilliant mind. He is shown forgetting the way out of Principal’s office. Debraj leaves Michelle when one night she forces him to kiss her on her lips as she has never experienced passion and wanted Debraj to be the one to teach her the meaning of this word like so many others. The film ends with Michelle gaining her B.A. degree and her visiting the institution where Debraj stays. She shows him her degree and a glimmer of recognition appears in his eyes. The film ends with a complete role reversal as Michelle takes it upon herself to reacquaint Debraj with the meaning of words that he has long forgotten.

Haan Maine Chhu Kar Dekha Hai

Namak Haram - A fascinating movie starring Amitabh and Rajesh Khanna (1973)

Namak Haram released in the year 1973, a good two years after the path-breaking hit Anand. It had the same hit-making team of Hrishikesh Mukherjee (Director), Amitabh Bachchan and Rajesh Khanna (main heroes). Namak Haram addresses a burning issue of the day that of rising impoverishment of cotton mill workers of Bombay. Its tonality is more entrenched in the day-to-day concerns of industrial workers who toiled from dawn to dusk but earned only peanuts.

Somnath or Somu (Rajesh Khanna) lives in a shanty house with his widowed mom and unmarried sister, Sarla. His best pal is Calcutta-based business tycoon Damodar Maharaj’s only son and heir apparent Vikram or Vicky (Amitabh Bachchan). Theirs is an unlikely friendship for the two have very little in common. Vicky has to take over the reins of the company when his father suffers a heart attack and ends up having a confrontation with a senior employee and union leader of the factory, Bipinlal Pandey. This results in a strike. Vicky’s father, the ever astute businessman intervenes and asks his son to apologise to Bipilal to return things to normalcy. Vicky does so unwillingly and the strike is resolved.

However Vicky is unable to forget his humiliation and confides about this to his best friend, Somu. The two friends conspire to teach Bipinlal a lesson. As part of the plan, Somu accompanies Vicky to Calcutta, gets a job as a labourer in the mill and gets about befriending his fellow workers. He is able to get some monetary relief for injured workers and is soon elected as the union leader, displacing Bipinlal. The success of their plan sees the friends rejoicing. However Damodar is not too keen about this friendship as he sees Somu as a potential threat, who with his middle-class values can influence Vicky in the long run. Damodar starts a chain of events to create a wedge between the two friends that get out of control. The emotion-packed climax sees the death of one friend and the other going to jail, his act serving as both a penance and homage.

The movie scores on many fronts. First it is the superb direction of Hrishikesh Mukherjee whose sensitive delineation of a subject so complex that makes this film such an engaging watch. Then it is R.D.Burman’s soul stirring music. And finally it is the wonderful chemistry of the lead actors, Amitabh Bachchan and Rajesh Khanna, and their wonderful portrayal of the two characters Vicky and Somu that will leave the viewer spell bound. Rajesh Khanna deserves a special mention because he plays the part just right and is able to show the metamorphosis of Somu-from lackey of spoilt friend to a man willing to stake his life for his principles-that will raise a lump in your throat.

Diya Jalte Hain

Nadiya Se Dariya

Main Shayar Badnaam

Lyrics from the movie Namak Haram:

Diye Jalte hain

Diye jalte hain, phool khilte hain, diye jalte hain, phool khilte hain
badi mushkil se, magar, duniya mein dost, milte hain, diye jalte hain

Jab jis waqt kisi ka, pyar juda hota hai, kuchh na poochho, yaron dil ka, haal bura hota hai,
Jab jis waqt kisi ka pyar juda hota hai, kuchh na poonchho yaron dil ka haal bura hota hai,
dil pe yadon ke jaise, teer chalte hain, ahanha
Diye jalte hain, phool khilte hain, diye jalte hain

Is rang roop pe dekho, hargiz naaz na karna, jaan bhi mange, yaar to dede na, naraz na karna,
rang ud jate hain, dhoop dhalte hain, hmhmhm
Diye jalte hain, phool khilte hain, diye jalte hain

Daulat aur jawani, ek din kho jaati hain, sach kahta hoon, saari duniya, dushman ho jaati hai,
umr bhar dost lekin saath chalte hain hmmhm
Diye jalte hain, phool khilte hain, badi mushkil se, magar, duniya mein dost milte hain
Diye jalte hain.

Namak Haram - A fascinating movie starring Amitabh and Rajesh Khanna (1973)

Shaan - Starring Amitabh and Shashi Kapoor (released in 1980)

Shaan, released in the year 1980, almost four years after the blockbuster, Sholay. The common thread between these two films is the director, Ramesh Sippy. Great things were expected from the man who had given Indian cinema its mammoth blockbuster in the form of Sholay. Almost everybody who had seen Sholay was expecting a repeat performance.

DSP Shiv Kumar Sharma (Sunil Dutta) is an honest and diligent police officer who lives in Bombay (present day Mumbai) with his wife (Rakhi) and son. He also has two wayward brothers in Ravi (Sashi Kapoor) and Vijay (Amitabh Bachchan) who are petty crooks. The two of them spend most of their time indulging in schemes that are so wildly ridiculous that one feels that the whole purpose of these plots was not to make money but to have some fun. The two brothers meet their matches in a pair of women-the glamorous Parveen Babi and the somewhat gawky yet charming Bindiya Goswami- who are also good-hearted con artists.

The four crooks -- along with Bindiya's sneaky uncle -- form a team, sing some nice songs, and fall into a sweet double-dating sort of romance that perfectly compliments their thieving lifestyles. However the drama is introduced in the form of Shiv Kumar-the moralistic cop-cum-brother’s death at the hands of the film’s main villain, Shaakal(a very bald Kulbhushan Kharbanda). The brothers shocked by the sudden demise of their beloved brother, decide to shun all anti-social activities and also punish Shaakal. The villain smart enough to know that he has these two brothers braying for his blood employs Raakesh (Shatrughan Sinha) a sharp-shooter. He puts pressure on Rakesh by holding his wife hostage and believes he can force Rakesh to kill his enemies. The long drawn out climax sees the mother of all encounters that includes a tank full of crocodiles. In the end, good wins over evil and the wicked meet their just end.

By this time you must be wondering, but that is a perfectly sane “Bollywood” commercial story-line. And it is. Or rather it would have been, had Sippy not gone over board in his sub plots that take away from the main film rather than adding to it. The second weak link has to be Kulbhushan Kharbandda who even in his tonsured look fails to evoke enough menace or scare. But on the whole Shaan is definitely a worthwhile ‘time-pass’ film that has pleasant music and some wonderful acting by the inimitable duo of Amitabh Bachchan and Sashi Kapoor.

Namak Halal - Another superb Amitabh Movie (1982)

Namak Halal released in 1982, was directed by Prakash Mehra, the man who gave Amitabh Bachchan Zanjeer and us a viewers, a superstar. Namak Halal went on to become one of the biggest hits of his career and of the year that it released. It bore his trademark style of story telling, interesting with lots of twists and turns, the right amount of emotional drama and a nice does of comedy. The film starred some of the biggest stars of that era who turned in superb performances like Amitabh Bachchan, Shashi Kapoor, Om Prakash and the dusky powerhouse of talent Smita Patil.

Young Arjun is brought up by his Daddu (paternal grandfather) Om Prakash after his father is killed in the line of duty, while trying to save the life of his employer. As he grows up, he is sent to the city by Om Prakash, in searh of a new job and a new life. In the city he meets up with Bhairon ( Ram P. Sethi) who helps him land a job at a five star hotel. The hotel is owned by Raja (Shashi Kapoor). In the course of his work he ends up saving the honour of a female employee, Poonam (Smita Patil) and the duo end up falling in love. Arjun Singh also discovers that the manager of the hotel (Ranjeet) and a host of shadowy bad guys are out to kill Raja. The whole thing has been planned in a way so as to point the finger of suspicion at Savitri Devi (Waheeda Rehman) Raja’s foster mother. The bad guys have enlisted the support of a cabaret singer Nisha (Parveen Babi) to get close to Raja but she ends up falling in love with him.

Arjun Singh smells a rat and at the same time his grandfather who has come down to the city tells him that Savitri Devi is his real mother who had taken on the responsibility of bringing up the orphaned Raja at her husband’s insistence. She had sent her own flesh and blood, Arjun away to the village so that she could fulfil her duties properly. This piece of news reaffirms and strengthens Arjun’s resolve to clear his mother’s name and save his employer’s life from the villains. Whether Arjun is able to save Raja’s life and whether Raja is able to recognise Savitri Devi’s sacrifice forms the climax of the film.

An out and out entertainer, Namak Halal stands out for Amitabh Bachchan’s superb acting. His Arjun Singh is a wonderful mixture of naiveté and street smartness. Just watch out for the “English is a phunny language” scene-truly wonderful. The rest of the cast do justice to the screenplay. A special mention must be made of Bappi Lahri’s music. He introduced techno beats to Indian film music via this film.

Namak Halal - HIndi MOvie starring Amitabh (1982)

Laawaris - Another Amitabh Bachchan potboiler (1981)

Laawaris came in the year 1981 and became synonymous with the song Mere Angne Mein Tumhara Kya Kaam Hai. It appears twice in the film, once rendered by Alka Yagnik (who received her first Filmfare nominations for this particular song) and once by the hero Amitabh Bachchan himself. It went on to become one of the landmark songs of his career. The film too was a super duper hit and notched up another success for the Prakash Mehra-Amitabh Bachchan pairing. The duo had made their mark with Zanjeer and considered by then to be one of the most bankable director-actor combination of Hindi commercial cinema.

Mehra stayed true to his forte and his style. Laawaris packed in a lot of emotional drama with the right amount of humour and of course hum-able scores. The story resolved around Hira ( Amitabh Bachchan), the illegitimate child of Seth Ranbir (Amjad Khan) and Rakhee, a singer. Disowned by Amjad Khan, Rakhee dies heartbroken and young Hira is brought up by an alcoholic beggar Gangu Ganpat (Sreeram Laagoo). Hira grows up believing he is the child of this useless man.

One day he rebels against his adopted father’s atrocious behaviour who then tells him the truth about his birth. He leaves his adoptive father and finds employment with Mahender Babu (Rajender) who unbeknownst to him is his half-brother. In the course of things he gets close to his biological father (Amjad Khan) and his half sister and the rest of the family. He also finds true love in the form of Mohini, a smouldering Zeenat Aman. Things however take a turn for worse when Ranjeet ends up impregnating the sister of another employee (Suresh Oberoi). The resolution of this turmoil and the Hira’s acceptance into the family by his father who gives him his name, (thus removing the tag of ‘illegitimate’) forms the climax of the story.

The film despite being typical masala, commercial Bollywood fare, is worth watching because of the superlative performances, especially by Amitabh Bachchan and Amjad Khan. As has been mentioned before the song ‘Mere Angne Mein became an instant hit and continues to be one of the most popular songs of Hindi films. Amitabh Bachchan continues to perform the said song in all his stage shows, which is a huge draw for audiences abroad. On the whole, Laawaris is a fine example of mainstream Hindi film- larger than life, dramatic, colourful and entertaining and most importantly devoid of lofty pretensions.

Apni TO Jaise Taise

Apni to jaise taise
Thodi aise ya waise
Apni to jaise taise
Thodi aise ya waise
Kat jaayegi

Apne aage na peeche
Na koi upar neeche
Ronewala

Aapka kya hoga

Aap bhi meri tarah insaan ki aaulad hain
Aap mooh mangi dua
Hum unsooni faryaad hain

Aap bhi meri tarah insaan ki aaulad hain
Aap mooh mangi dua
Hum unsooni faryaad hain
Woh jinhe sara zamana samjhe laawaris yahan
Aap jaise zaalimon ke zulm ki ijaat hain
Gaali huzur ki to
Lagti duaon jaisi
Gaali huzur ki to
Lagti duaon jaisi
Hum dua bhi de to lage hai gaali
Aapka kya hoga janaabe-aali
Aapka kya hoga hm

Aapke maathe se chhalke jo pasina bhi kahin
Aasma hilne lage aur kaap oothe yeh zameen
Aapka to yeh pasina khoon se bhi keemti
Aur apne khoon ki keemat yahan kuch bhi nahin
Apna to khoon paani
Jeena marna bemaani
Apna to khoon paani
Jeena marna bemaani
Waqt ki har ada hai apni dekhi bhali
Aapka kya hoga janaabe-aali
Aapka kya hoga

The movie spans across 3 countries and 2 continents. The movie starts in England where aj Malhotra and Simran Kaur (Shahrukh Khan and Kajol respectively) are living in London, with Raj being like any normal London boy, drinking, out with friends, and so on, and spoiled by his father Anupam Kher. Simran has a domineering father, convenience store owner Chaudhry Baldev Singh (Amrish Puri), who is very conservative and would not really want his daughter to have all the freedom of a girl living in London. He would want his daughter to get married to a traditional Indian man, and finds a suitable arrangement with the son of his friends. Simran finally agrees to this, but wants to first travel with friends and see the world.
In the trip, Simran bumps into Raj, who is also on a trip. She does not like him, seeing him as a uncaring person, but there is a situation in which both of them have to depend on each other. They start loving each other, but have to separate at the end of the trip. When Baldev gets to know about this from Simran, he is very angry since he considers that Simran has broken his trust, and flies off to Punjab with the family for marriage. What does Raj do ? How does he manage to persuade Baldev and marry Simran ?

Kabhie Kabhie - A very sentimental movie

Kabhi Kabhie is a great movie, released in 1976, produced and Yash Chopra who has a number of romantic movies to his credit. Kabhi Kabhie is a part of that lore, with a mix of some great human emotions, superb romantic pairing, and of course, excellent music. The music was by Khayyam, with lyrics by Sahir Ludhianvi (and the music got both Khayyam and Sahir Ludhianvi awards) with the music being counted as one of the great musical notes of film music. The movie starred Waheeda Rehman, Shashi Kapoor, Amitabh Bachchan, Raakhee Gulzar, Neetu Singh and Rishi Kapoor. The movie also earned Yash Chopra a good amount of money, being a commercial success (and was the second such pairing of Yash Chopra with Amitabh and Shashi, Deewar being the first such movie).

Of course, Yash Chopra's movie also explores human relations that are on the edge of what society always used to accept in other movies, so he showcases widow re-marriage, relationships before marriage, and post marriage (watch Silsila for a perfect example of that). Kabhi Kabhie is the story of 2 different generations. The first generation is that of Amitabh Bachchan, and his relationship with Rakhee at college. However, their story cannot move ahead, and she married Shashi Kapoor in deference to the wishes of her parents. Amitabh also needs to move on, and he marries Waheeda Rehman, who is a widow and also has a child named Pinky (and Amitabh does not know about her past relationship). Pinky is adopted by another couple. Amitabh and Waheeda soon have a daughter called Sweetie.
The next generation is when the son of Rakhee and Shashi Kapoor, Rishi Kapoor, falls in love with Pinky, again at college and they decide to get married. Pinky (Neetu Singh) discovers that she is adopted, and wants to get Waheeda to acknowledge the relationship, while Waheeda is fearful of the reaction of Amitabh. At the same time, Sweetie also loves Rishi, and Amitabh would be all for this daughter's happiness. When does the secret finally come out ?

Song: Tu Pyaar Ka Sagar Hain

If you have ever watched Balraj Sahni in a movie, then you would appreciate this movie and this song. Starring Balraj Sahni and Nutan, the movie is an excellent movie from the Black and White era. The movie has Music by Shankar Jaikishen and is directed by Amiya Chakrabarty (who unfortunately passed away only 2 years after making this movie). This song was sung by Manna Dey.
Seema is a movie that has some incredible performances by Nutan and Balraj Sahni. Nutan plays the orphan who was ill-treated in her uncle and aunt's house, and then framed for a theft. After a series of escapes and captures, she is finally sent to a reformatory run by Balraj Sahni. She is also proved innocent, and the movie is about how she overcomes her rebellious attitude and settles down to a more calmer personality. In the end, when she is free to go, she opts to stay with Balraj Sahni who had suffered a heart attack.
