Amitabh Bachchan received a Filmfare nomination for his role in this film, which was a dual role. This was the only nomination received. The movie was not a very big hit, but was not a flop also. The movie also starred the following in the movie:
Amitabh's love interests - Waheeda Rehman and Neetu Singh
Others in the movie - Pinchoo Kapoor, Sujit Kumar and Kader Khan
The music for the movie was by Kalyanji Anandji and the movie was directed by Narendra Bedi.
The lyrics for the movie were by Gulshan Bawra. One of the most popular songs from the movie is called 'Behna O Behna'.
The movie was like a number of movies where Amitabh played the role of a person who is from a normal upbringing, but due to certain circumstances, Amitabh becomes a mafia man, who has turned to crime.
The movie is about revenge taken by a good man, who is pushed into a situation where he becomes a mafia man, a rich man and who is faced with the challenges of being involved with the mafia later.
The movie takes the story of a poor man from a village, Dharamchand / Dharma who lives with his family, primarily consisting of his wife Radha and his newborn son, Raju. Dharma's life takes a turn when he saves the lives of 3 people from the city, Ajit, Suresh, and Sujit, from a tiger and they promise to help him whenever he decides to visit Bombay. When Dharma goes through a bad time, he decides to move to Bombay and he is setup as a warehouse manager by Ajit.
However, soon he is involved with the police who arrest him (inspite of claiming his innocence), and sentenced to jail. When he comes out after a couple of years, he realizes that his life has totally changed, and for the worse. He avenges the rape/suicide of Laxmi by Sujit by killing all 3 of them and soon join another gang and becomes really powerful. Raju is sent off for education abroad, and the story moves into a conflict between son (Amitabh again) and his father when Raju wants to marry Geeta. What happens next ?
With the success of Munnabhai MBBS, it was clear that there would be a sequel, it was just waiting for the sequel to come. And so came the sequel in 2006, called Lage Raho Munnabhai (carry on Munnabhai). The movie starred the main set of 2 characters, Munnabhai (Sanjay Dutt) and his sidekick Circuit (Arshad Warsi). The movie showcases the story of a ruffian who becomes infused with Gandhian ideals (under the influence of the spirit of Gandhi), and tries to share the same with others around him, mixed with a Mumbai type way of speaking. Sanjay Dutt is Munnabhai, a Mumbai don who indulges in the familiar show of force, and employs muscles to get his work done. He is also infatuated with a local radio jockey Janhavi (Vidya Balan) and wants to get to meet her. However, how to get a ruffian to meet a beautiful radio jockey is not easy to visualize, and then he hears of a contest where the first person to answer multiple questions asked by her gets to meet her. The contest is about answering questions on Mahatma Gandhi (Bapu), and this is where the mix with Gandhian ideology starts to happen.
How does a local hood answer questions about Mahatma Gandhi ? Well, he does this by kidnapping a group of professors by force, and then asking them to answer the questions (and of course, if a professor answers the question correctly, he would get a prize). So, Munnabhai gets the answers correctly, and being highly nervous, manages to make it to the radio station to meet his lady love. He presents himself as an expert in Gandhian ideology, and impresses her to the extent that she takes him with her to present a lecture on Gandhian philosophy to a community of senior citizens (after taking a massive crash course in Gandhian ideology). In this time period, Gandhi appears to him and offers to help him, as long as Munnabhai does everything that Gandhi asks him to do. And so starts the experiment of a underworld don with Gandhi's spirits, in which he comes much closer to Janhavi and even hosts a radio problem along with her where he expounds the logic of Gandhian ideals and offers to solve the problems of people. And it is here that the movie is mesmerizing, bringing forth the ideals of Gandhi's truths in various stories; the story about the guy who loses his father's money in the stock market and is contemplating suicide, and who calls Munnabhai as a lost soul is incredible, heart moving. The solution is typically Gandhian. The twist in the main plot is of course the builder Lucky Singh (Boman Irani) who wants to get the old people evicted from the house so that he can gift the house to his daughter's future father-in-law Kulbhushan Kharbanda. He employs Munnabhai and Circuit to get this done, and uses a time when Munnabhai has gone with Janhavi and the old folks to Goa, with circuit emptying the house (not knowing that this was something that Munnabhai would not have wanted). When Munnabhai gets back, he is shocked, but Lucky Singh is unwilling to give the house back. And so starts the attempt by Munnabhai to use Gandhian philosophy to force Lucky Singh to give the house back - in the midst of this, Munnabhai is forced to confront the truth and tell Janhavi all about himself and the truth (and of course she leaves him). However, it is this Gandhigiri that allows Munnabhai to eventually win out and use the power of truth to solve his problems. The movie inspired a large number of people to adopt Gandhian practices to try to solve their problems.

How many people are there who would not have seen Parinda (well, atleast if you take people who are more than 30 years old). Parinda was not director Vidhu Vinod Chopra's first movie, but if there are some movies that he will be most remembered by, it will be for this movie. Similarly, both Anil Kapoor and Madhuri Dixit have reckoned that this movie is one of their best movies. The movie was produced and directed by Vidhu Vinod Chopra, written by Shivkumar Subramaniam, and starred Jackie Shroff, and Nana Patekar in pivotal roles. Music was by R D Burman, and lyrics by Khursheed Hallauri. Some other actors who had great roles in the movies were Tom Alter, Anupam Kher, and Suresh Oberoi.
The movie was released in 1989. It tells the gripping story of the Bombay underworld, the fight between the rival gangs, the lack of trust and warfare between them, the role of the police. In the end, the movie was about the guy who got involved in a gang for survival, and who learns the hard way that life in the gang is brutal. In the end, everybody is expendable, life is brutal; and even a loyal member of the gang cannot save his own brother. The reason why the movie was so popular was due to its realism, essentially attributed to the technical crew of the film, with Binod Pradhan´s cinematography being a great hit. The overall sound of the movie, the shots with the pigeons, the mad gun shooting amid the honeymoon lovemaking, the various deaths in the movie, the climatic scene where Jackie Shroff kills his own boss (and the killer of his brother) by burning him to death in a fire of alcohol bottles, all of these were shots that still enthrall people. The movie is about the love between the 2 brothers, Jackie and Anil. When they were young and fighting for survival, Jackie joins Anna's gang and prospers. He sends Anil out for studying, with Anil all the time unaware that his brother actually worked for a gang leader (and too, a psychotic one). Jackie tries to keep his brother away from the gang, but eventually fails when Anil's friend, Inspector Anupam Kher is killed by Anna's men (using the meeting called by Anil). Madhuri Dixit is Paro, a teacher, who is in love with Anil, but moves away when she learns that he is now part of the gang. The rest of the movie is about the revenge taken by Anil, the consequences when Anna learns about this, and the reaction of Jackie. This movie is a must watch.

Singh is King made a major splash on the movie circuit. Akshay Kumar was acknowledged as a real hot item in the past few years, being credited for hits that he gave (Namastey London, Welcome, etc), and not being tarred with the flops (Tashan). He must be doing well enough that Shahrukh Khan must be getting sleepless nights. And then I read that Singh is King had a mega 3 day weekend rush, making more than most other movies that have been released in the past few years. So, it was with some amount of anticipation that I went to watch this movie; and the reaction at the end of the movie was - another 'Welcome'. I must confess, I enjoyed 'Welcome' while watching it, but immediately after that I was thinking about why I enjoyed such a movie that did not have much of a story, depended on action, and was basically a senseless movie. Singh is Kinng is such a movie, made in the same genre.
The movie was controversial because of the depiction of all the main characters as Sardars / Sikhs, and there was the usual objection from some sikh bodies, but that died down and the movie release went off without the problems that the Sunny starrer 'Jo Bole So Nihaal' did. The movie starred Akshay Kumar, Katrina Kaif, Ranvir Shorey, Neha Dhupia, Javed Jaffrey, and Sonu Sood. The direction was done by Anees Bazmee, and the movie was produced by Vipul Amrutlal Shah. Music was by Pritam and RDB (the song is Singh Is Kinng). Although Katrina Kaif was the heroine, there were a lot of scenes shot on Neha Dhupia, and she earned a lot of positive reviews. The music also did the job, with the title song being good, and the romantic 'Teri Ore' being superb. The movie is all about the adventures of Happy Singh (Akshay), who is a simple guy, always ready to help people. The whole village in Punjab where Happy Singh lives is unhappy with another son of theirs, Lakhan "Lucky" Singh (Sonu Sood). He had gone to Australia, got jailed for a drug crime that he did not commit, and after coming out, he had taken revenge and eventually became the mafia overlord. Happy Singh volunteers to get him back to the village, and sets off along with a reluctant Om Puri (there are some comedy scenes between the two). They get into a boarding card mixup, and land up in Egypt instead of Australia. While waiting for the mistake to get corrected, Akshay runs into Katrina in Cairo, and after a few encounters (in which he discovers that she wants to get rid of all criminals), he falls head over heels for her. Well, he eventually reaches Australia, only to find that Lucky Singh is not exactly eager to get back to his village. Wandering around, he runs into an India lady who takes care of him, and he starts treating her like a mother. In a big coincidence, one of many, Lucky Singh gets injured in a shootout and Happy Singh takes over as the leader of the gang. In another coincidence, Katrina turns out out to be the daughter of the lady who helped Akshay, and Akshay helps her out by pretending that she is still rich. The rest of the movie is about how Akshay wins over all his detractors, faces many challenges including the fact that Katrina is about to be married off to somebody else, and so on. If you watch the opening scene where Sonu Sood catches a would-be-assassin by jumping off a building while wearing a parachute under his party jacket, catches the killer who is running away in a bike, and then the parachute and Sonu again climb in the air where Sony drops the killer, you can imagine how the rest of the movie would be like.
Imtihaan was a movie released in 1995, starring Sunny Deol, Raveena Tandon, and Saif Ali Khan. Saif was relatively young in the movie industry at that point of time, and it showed on screen (he comes across as a gangly youth, moving with energy, but still to show his renowned acting abilities that he showed in later movies). The movie was directed by Harry Baweja, and had music by Anu Malik. The movie did average business, but the songs were a big hit. The movie had one selling point, it had an element of suspense, something not always well executed. However, and maybe people who saw this movie for the first time would feel, the suspense is not always the type of suspense you see in American movies, since a lot of people in the audience were able to predict as to what would happen when the suspense breaks, and here too, the story was predictable.
The movie has some elements of romance, widow remarriage, revenge, parenting, etc thrown in. Preeti (Raveena) is a rich girl in love with her college friend Rajat (Sunny Deol), and they decide to marry even though her father opposes this relationship. However, on their honeymoon, disaster strikes when they are attacked by criminals and Rajat dies with his body not being recovered. Preeti is in shock, and her father is not able to make her feel better. However, a young singer Saif Ali Khan starts liking Preeti, and although she rebuffs him, her father encourages him. Eventually, they marry even though Raveena is still not interested, and she rebuffs him after marriage. Soon, however, his passion breaks through and she starts liking him. After some time, things start to change. Preeti apparently starts to hide things, gets phone calls, and so on, and there is enough to make Saif suspicious of her behaviour. In addition, she starts to get close to a young kid at an orphanage, and Saif starts shadowing. He soon finds out who is behind all this, and it is eventually an alive Sunny who wants his own son back (the one whom Preeti gave birth to and whom she was told was dead). And then the criminals gets involved, and eventually Sunny defeats them, at the cost of his own life.

There are times when you watch that is so impressive that you don't mind watching it again. I found Prahaar to be one such movie. The movie was released in 1991, and it has been quite some time, but it can't take away the topical nature of the movie. The movie was directed by Nana Patekar and produced by Sudhakar Bokade. The movie had music by Laxmikant Pyarelal and lyrics by Mangesh Kulkarni. Nana Patekar showed a commendable amount of skill in extracting good performances from the cast of characters that included Dimple Kapadia and Madhuri Dixit (there was a story floating around the time when the movie was made that he wanted a natural look, and so when one of the female leads reported to the set in make-up, he asked her to wash the make-up off). The movie does not have a direct villain, but there is a struggle against many kinds of bad elements, whether it be terrorists, or the normal city ruffians and hoodlums who take hafta (extortion money), or even of the normal population who have been so terrorised that they have lost some of their sense of right or wrong. The movie also has some good performances from the second tier of characters such as Gautam Joglekar (who plays Peter D'Souza). The movie starts off as the story about men who have joined the army as commandos. They start to undergo the army commando training course under the tutelage of Major Chauhan (Nana - who actually took a brief training course at the army commando training course), and the course can be pretty hard, forcing many of them to feel like dropping out. Some do, but Peter does not and completes the course finally. By that time, he has developed a respect for Major Chauhan. The training course depicted is fairly detailed, with a certain amount of humour showing up. At the end of the course, they are called to undertake an anti-terrorist operation, successful, but Peter is crippled and has to return home and leave the army. He reaches home, and his fiancee Madhuri is glad to have him back. His army training however soon causes him to start opposing the local mafia who extort money, and soon he is killed. At this time, Major Chauhan comes for the funeral, and sees how the local police is unconcerned and takes no action. Major Chauhan takes up as a paying guest in the house of Dimple (a young widow with a small child) and gets affectionate towards the child (they never actually show any romance between Nana and Dimple, although there are many hints towards something like this possibly developing). Once he actually takes on the ruffians single-handedly when they tease Dimple, but soon realizes that the local citizens are so suppressed by the mafia that they actually turn on Nana for going against the ruffians. And then the epic scene where the gangsters (this was from an age where the use of guns was less) decide to attack Dimple's house and Nana. They first scare Dimple and her child, and then they taunt Nana. And then the fight begins - you can see the untrained ruffians being very confident of their youth and numbers against a person who is after a single person and older than them, and yet soon they realize that the person whom they are attacking can defeat all of them, and Nana proceeds to do just that. In the process, he actually kills them, and is soon hauled up before the court. And his speech about being a soldier, and fighting against the vermin of society goes in vain, since the judge declares that his fight is misplaced, he is not responsible for repairing the civilian society, and he is sent for counseling until he is over this. The movie is a movie that talks about how the fight against injustice is something that all of us can handle, how the personal conviction and strength of a person can make them win odds, and yet how sometime the whole fight can be futile in the face of a disinterested administration.
Omkara (release in 2006) was a much awaited movie. Director Vishal Bhardwaj had earlier made a name for himself with Makdee and Maqbool (starring an incredible performance by Irfan Khan), and his Hindi interpretation of Shakespeare's Othello had already lead to much anticipation, with the prospect of Saif Ali Khan playing a baddie's role being much awaited. The movie delivered, but not too much as Vishal would have thought. It won a great amount of critical acclaim, and extreme kudos for the 2 best performances of Saif Ali Khan and Konkona Sen. Vivek Oberoi and Kareina Kapoor won praise, while the performance of Ajay Devgun could have been better - much more is expected out of an actor who has given a performance like Gangajal.
No matter, the movie belongs to Saif Ali Khan. His portrayal of the angry avenger Iago is brilliant. The movie would have been a commercial success if not for the dark atmosphere of the movie, and the crude dialog (replete with the Hindi curse words that you would hear in such a setting, but which inhibit more families and larger audiences from attending). Further, the portrayal of the settings of a rural UP are not exactly geared for wider commercial. Having said that, the movie did very well in markets abroad such as the US and British markets. Ajay Devgun plays Omkara (Othello), Kareena Kapoor plays Dolly Mishra (Desdemona), Konkona Sen Sharma plays Indu (Iago's wife Emilia), Vivek Oberoi plays Kesu 'the firangi' (since he is from the city) (Cassio), and Bipasha Basu plays Billo Chamanbahar (Bianca). Omkara is a local bahubali, a person capable of getting things done as well as controlling a criminal gang, and thus very valuable to the local politician Tiwari Bhaisaab (Naseeruddin Shah). This helps him right in the beginning when he elopes with Dolly and her father objects. When his daughter states that she was not abducted, but eloped on her own, he feels ashamed. This is a small twist in the story. The main story is when Tiwari moves onto a bigger role and wants Omkara to take his local seat. This is to be the culmination of Langda Tyaagi's (Saif Ali Khan) ambitions, to be the successor to Omkara. He is shocked and driven into a rage when Omkara appoints Kesu to be the next successor. In this rage, he starts planning revenge, and does so without any hesitation or thought, and this is the guts of the movie. The cunning that he deploys to break both Omkara and Kesu, and in the process use a number of other people such as his own wife, Omkara's would-be-bride Dolly and the jilted lover of Dolly. His plans play on the most base of human emotions, trust, and eventually he manages to convince Omkara about an affair between his Dolly and his trusted lieutant Kesu, leading to a final conflict where Omkara destroys his own world and then takes his own life in regret over what he has done. The screenplay, direction and music is all by Vishal Bhardwaj, lyrics are by Gulzar. The song 'Beedi jalai' became a national hit

Chak De Fatte is an exceptional song from the stable of Dhruv Dhalla, with lyrics by Jaideep Sahni (who is also the scriptwriter, the dialogues writer; he is also credited with the story). The song (sung by Kailash Kher) is a very peppy song, and have been remixed a lot. It is still incredibly popular; and of course, the movie is also very popular. The movie, Khosla Ka Ghosla, cannot be called an unknown movie, since it has stars of the like of Anupam Kher, Boman Irani, Ranvir Shourey, Tara Sharma, and others. What the movie did achieve was that of a dream run, with the classic tale of a low budget movie that went to get some spectacular word of mouth publicity, and then become a hit; as well as a cult status. People who have seen the movie claim that it so much resembles reality, and especially from Delhi believe that it portrays life and people in the city exactly as they are (not very flattering for people in Delhi, but that is how things are). You see the character, and they seem so life-like, and you are sure to believe that this is how the land mafia will behave. You find yourself urging on the fight-back by the normal middle class people, while identifying with the timidity of the father. Khosla ka ghosla literally means the nest of Khosla (the name of the main character); nest also implies a residence. The middle class guy (Anupam Kher) is pitched against the wicked mafia / builder Boman Irani. Soon Anupam Kher has lost. And this is when family and friends (with son Pravon Dabas and girlfriend Tara Sharma) and the comic duo of Ranvir Shourey and Vinay Pathal combine with a sophisticated-acting Navin Nischol to try and sell the builder Boman Irani some fake land. The twists and turns of whether they are able to sell some government land to Boman Irani makes for some hilarious watching, especially when Boman Irani wants to see the land. This is a must watch movie.
Akshay and Katrina have already done 2 movies together - Humko Diwana Kar Gaye and Namastey London. Namastey London was a hit, and the pair did feel good on-screen. Welcome just takes the pair to their best hit so far, and does so in style. The movie is styled as an out and out comedy, the kind that you go and watch, and whether you like it or not, you really don't think too much about it afterwards. Welcome must have been difficult to put together, what with so many different stars, different locales, and the need to put so many gags into one movie, but director Aneez Bazmi seems to have managed that. And Welcome has been a big hit, more so overseas. I was very enthused about the movie when I went in, but a trifle disappointed with the movie when I came out. It could have been far better in my opinion. I liked another comedy from the same producers (Nadiadwalas) much better, which was Mujhse Shaadi Karoge ? That was an all out comedy in which the comic bits never flagged, while in this movie there were times when I was not laughing, it seemed so forced. Ok, so maybe it was not so bad. The 4 main other characters of Paresh Rawal, Anil Kapoor, Nana Patekar and Feroz Khan were great in their roles. They seemed natural. For example, I loved the way that Paresh Rawal meets a family when hunting for a bride for his nephew, and the way that his encounter with Ranjeet's family goes. Similarly, the way that Nana Patekar goes ballistic, and then says 'Control'; and also the time when he has to become emotional in front of Paresh Rawal (while faking it) was great. And Feroz Khan just acted naturally, and overall was great. It's just that the storyline and direction seemed to become much weaker in the second half. The story of the movie is about the auctioneer Rajeev (Akshay) for whom his uncle Dr. Paresh Rawal is hunting for a bride, but she has to be from a honest family. And this is the main issue. Akshay meets Katrina and falls for her (literally ! She has to carry him away from a fire), and things seem to start moving. But her brother Nana Patekar and fellow don Anil Kapoor are the biggest dons in Hong Kong, and so Paresh refuses. Much threatening and comedy later, he agrees. But Paresh brings in Mallika to try and break up the marriage; she is actually a family friend. To try and break the impasse, Akshay tries to turn them honest (and this was very weak, since how would getting both of them to dally with Mallika in different roles - a wanna be movie actor and an artist work, since when the truth would come out, they are unlikely to remain honest). And then there is the head, Feroz Khan, and when accidentally Katrina shoots Feroz's son dead, there is hell to pay. Eventually, after a lot of drama and cliff-hangers, things work out. But the movie could have been far better. Music for the movie is by 3 music directors: Himesh Reshammiya, Anand Raj Anand and Sajid-Wajid
A typical urban gangster movie of the 70's and 80's (thus excluding the rural dacoit movie such as Sholay) was all about the larger than life character, fighting against the police, and maybe reforming or dying. It was the odd movie such as Deewar which tried to look into the mind of a gangster, but these were still movies about larger than life characters. It was films like Vaastav & Satya that tried to break into the basic characters mind, and show the goings on around them, along with the overall despair that involved such criminals (and make no mistake, no matter the circumstances, the new age of movies display them as criminals even when showing their sequence of steps to becoming a gangster).
A refreshing new movie in this regard is the movie called Gangster (directed by Anurag Basu for Mahesh Bhatt). The movie pulls no punches, showing the old game of gangster vs. police through the eyes of a young woman forced to make her choices. The movie is truly a different movie, able to de-glamorize the whole gangster-moll and romance bit. The movie does have some unrealistic parts as well, such as the alcohol-sunken portrayal of a bar dancer by Kangana Ranaut in a great debut role. With some excellent roles given to both Shiney Ahuja and Emraan Hashmi, this movie is also a good example of a movie doing well on the basis of story and performances (and some good music). Story is all in flashback, showing 2 people firing guns at each other; and then the story starts to unfold. Kanagana essays the role of Simran, a dancer turned into an alcoholic. She has dreams of a normal family, but those are not to be. One day she gives shelter to a dreaded gangster Daya (Shiney Ahuja) when he is being chased by the cops. Why she does so is not clear ! However, Daya starts visiting her club and soon saves her from a drunk customer, and then asks her to come home. And so naturally, they start having an affair; but always on the move (far removed from the normal life that she wanted) since he is on the run from the police. He even ignores the advice from his patron (Gulshan Grover in a short role) to leave her. They decide to escape from India so as to escape the police and the pressure; and he goes off to Mauritius and she is sent off to South Korea. And it is here that she starts sinking into the pressured and dreary life of an alcoholic, which is when Emraan Hashmi meets her (he is a singer, and starts showing interest in her). She succumbs to her loneliness and has a one-night stand with him. In the meantime Shiney reaches there and beats up Emraan almost to death. However, this is the last we see of the proud don, since he now tries to lead a normal life for her, doing menial work in order to earn money. But, we all know what happens from a one-night stand - Kangana is now pregnant with Emraan's child. Emraan encourages her to get Shiney to surrender to the police, and, in a fateful decision that she will always regret, she picks Emraan's side. And then after Shiney is gone, she learns that Emraan was a policeman, and the finale is about her trying to take vengeance. The movie is a worth-watch, and with some hummable songs. Movie has music by Pritam Chakraborty; lyrics are by Sayeed Qadri, Mayur Puri, Nilesh Mishra

This is a song from the movie Naaraz (also spelled Naraaz or Naaraaz) that was directed by Mahesh Bhatt and released in 1994. The movie starred Atul Agnihotri, Mithun Chakraborty, Pooja Bhatt, Sonali Bendre and Gulshan Grover. This song was sung by Sonu Malik. NARAAZ is about the story of two friends who are from opposite backgrounds. AJAY (Atul Agnihotri) is a son of a well to do family & DEVA (Mithun Chakraborty) is from a low caste poor family. Ajay's Jagdamba Uncle does not like their friendship & sends him to London. Ajay grows up in London & become a writer of a look titled "DEVAA". He returns to village Bharatpur to meet his childhood friend Deva. He is accompanied by a London born Indian Journalist Sonali (Sonali Bendre). He takes up the cause of providing drinking water for the villagers. In the process he clashes with his Jagdamba Uncle who is in politics who causes death to scores of village people as they want to use the temple water. When Deva takes up this issue, he is branded as a terrorist and cop are sent to arrest him. To escape from the police, he lands up in a ship which was leaving for Malaysia. In Kulalumpur he joins the gang of TAO-KI (Gulshan Grover) and meets SONIA (Pooja Bhatt). In saving Sonia from the TAO-KI he becomes a rival gangster and drug peddler. Ajay with Sonali finally arrives at Kulalumpur to take Deva back to his people. There is a dramatic confrontation between the two loving friends who are both angry with the society following opposite paths. In Kulalumpur Deva finishes the gang of TAO-KI and gets himself killed. But before he dies, with the help of Ajay & Sonali his dreams are fulfiled of bringing water in his village.

At near the end of the 80's came a movie that was every inch a masala movie. Tridev. It was a super-hit, with all the elements of a masala movie thrown in. There was revenge, romance, guns, explosions, a villain, a hero back from the dead, another hero who is a villager who falls for a rich and cultured girl, there is a villain who looks like a proper villain, and then there was the catchy songs. I remember that 'Oye Oye' was the most heard song when outside your house, being played in vehicles, in music stores, by shopkeepers, and for some time became the patron phrase of eve-teasers. The movie was directed by Rajiv Rai and released in 1989, and it sort of also was the major movie in which Naseerudin Shah acts as a normal actor in a commercial movie, away from the art movies that he was so famous. There was some screaming from the art movie types about this betrayal, but I think that his response was to the effect that he also needs to be a success, and he does not see anything wrong in doing commercial movies.
The movie also led to a relationship between the director and one of his heroines. Rajiv Rai (34 years old) and Sonam (17 years old) fell in love, and eventually got married soon after. The movie had music by Kalayanji Anandji, lyrics by Anand Bakshi, and starred the following: Sunny Deol, Jackie Shroff, Naseeruddin Shah, Madhuri Dixit, Sonam, Sangeeta Bijlani, Anupam Kher, Amrish Puri and Raza Murad. With such a large star cast, you would expect that there would be a number of stories around the various cast members, and the movie could get complex, but in my opinion, the director did a wonderful job in terms of getting the movie together into a fluid and flowing entertainer. After all this, the story of the movie almost seems like an after-thought, but the movie does have a story. Bhujang is the pivot around which the movie runs, he is the villain who impacts the lives of all the main characters. When Naseeruddin Shah was young, his father was killed by Bhujang in a village, and the police was unable to help. Ever since then, he is somewhat disdainful of the police force and its men. Sunny Deol is a hard policeman, very critical of criminals, and as a result of excessive use of force in one such encounter with criminals, he is sent off to police lines. When in Bombay, he was a strong force against the illegal activities of Bhujang and his sons. He is supported by the police commissioner Anupam Kher, and is also in love with the commissioner's daughter, Madhuri Dixit. At one time, Bhujang kidnaps Madhuri to get one of his men free, and Anupam Kher refuses to do anything, and it is then Jackie Shroff (Anupam's son) defies his dad and breaks into the jail and frees the person. Since he is now hunted by the police, Jackie joins the gang and soon falls for Sangeeta Bijlani, who is with the gang to avenge a past harm that Bhujang did. The characters start meeting in terms of Sonam (daughter of Raza Murad)coming to the village for a shoot and meets Naseeruddin and they start liking each other. Sunny is posted in the same village, and soon he has a violent run-in with Naseeruddin, but they like each and becomes friends. The rest of the movie is about how these characters join hands, and fight Bhujang and his men and eventually defeat them.
Ghulam was a movie that won accolades for both Aamir Khan and Rani Mukerji. I was watching it again when it was coming on TV for the Nth rerun, and there are many scenes that are very gripping. It is somewhat different from the normal romance brand of movies. Released in 1998, and directed by Vikram Bhatt, the story of a Mumbai tapori had a charm in its own sense. The title of the movie is played in 2 ways, one is about Aamir no longer remaining a slave and breaking free, and the second is when this rebellion finally inspires the long-subjugated and yet somewhat rebellious nukkad (neighborhood) to finally join Aamir in his rebellion against the local thug.
The movie is essentially about these 2 brothers, Jai (Rajit Kapoor) and Siddharth (Aamir) who live in a local basti (neighborhood). They are the sons of a former freedom fighter who has tried to bring them up with morals, but who has hidden a terrible guilt about betraying his former friends to the British under duress. When Siddarth was young, his father was visited by a former colleague who berated him for this treachery, and this caused him to commit suicide. Now, both of them work to some level for the local goonda and former boxer, Raunak Singh (Sharat Saxena). Jai advises him in a financial and strategic way, since Raunak wants to get out of this low level earning stream, and enter the world of executing contracts for the state, something that will catapult him into a higher league of earnings altogether. For this, he needs that there should be no controversy around him now, but he is essentially of a hard and ruthless nature who brooks no opposition. Siddarth is an aspiring boxer who does odd work for Raunak Singh, but is otherwise a good for nothing guy. One day, he comes across the motorcycle gang of Deepak Tijori and defeats him in a game of death, a famous sequence where they have to run against an oncoming train, and the person who jumps aside the last wins. He also gets attracted to Rani Mukherjee, who also starts falling for him. There is a famous song called 'Aati Kya Khandala' that became the rage after this movie.
Then he meets the person who eventually causes a change in his life. He meets a guy called Hari, who is a social worker, and becomes friendly with him. Hari starts coming in the way of Raunak Singh, and eventually they use Siddarth's friendship to call Hari for a meeting, and then kill him. This creates a sense of guilt in Siddarth's mind over his own role, further inflamed when he learns that Hari is Rani's brother and she is grief-stricken. The rest of the movie is essentially about how he works up the courage to confront his own guilt, break the chains of slavery that bind him to the don (even when his brother confronts him), and eventually loses his brother as well. Mita Vashisth, who plays a social worker, plays a strong role in trying to get him to do what is right. The movie finally culminates in the final confrontation, also for me, the favorite part. There is a fight in the end where Siddarth has to confront Raunaq, and also inspire the locality to fight back. Sections of this part seem a bit unbelievable, and the make up on Aamir's face (blood, etc) seem a bit over-done, but for me, this is the essence of the movie. The slave, when awakened, fights back with a ferocity not seen otherwise.
This is from the movie, Waisa Bhi Hota Hain, a movie that was not very successful, but a cult classic. It's about a copy-writer (Arshad Warsi) living in Bombay in a normal existence with his girl-friend (a police inspector), but with the normal dreams of being successful. One day his life takes a turn for the different. He finds out that his brother, has been shot dead, and when his girlfriend finds out, she throws him out. He is sitting on a park bench, drinking, when he saves a man from death after he is shot. This man is actually from the underworld, and now Arshad Warsi is squarely in the middle of gang wars. This song is now a very famous song, one that made the reputation of Kailash Kher. The song is an exceedingly beautiful Sufi song, very moving.

I really love this song. It was sung by Mukesh for the movie Dharam Karam in 1975, and sung on stage by Raj Kapoor, whose son Randhir Kapoor directed the movie. The movie was about how an underworld don and a honest man bring up each others sons. The underworld don, Premnath exchanges his son with Raj Kapoor, who is a singer, but inspite of their upbringing, the sons follow the paths of their real fathers. The movie stars Raj Kapoor, Randhir Kapoor, Rekha, Premnath and Dara Singh. It was R.D. Burman's only film as a Music Director for RK Films. Everytime I listen to this song with Raj Kapoor singing it on stage, you can feel it to be an auto-biographical song, with a person finally being remembered for his creations and works of art.
Lyrics:
Ek Din Bik Jayega, Maati Ke Mol Jag Mein Reh Jayenge Pyare Tere Bol Dooje Ke Hothon Ko Dekar Apne Geet Koi Nishani Chhod, Phir Duniya Se Dol Ek Din...
Anhoni Path Mein Kaante Lakh Bichaaye Honi To Phir Bhi Bichhda Yaar Milaye Yeh Birha, Yeh Doori Do Pal Ki Majboori Phir Koi Dilwala Kahe Ko Ghabraye Taram Pam... Dhara Jo Behti Hai Milke Rehti Hai Behti Chara Ban Ja Phir Duniya Se Dol Ek Din...
Parde Ke Peechhe Baithi Saanval Gori Thaam Ke Tere Mere Man Ki Dori Yeh Dori Na Chhoote, Yeh Bandhan Na Toote Bhor Hone Wali Hai Ab Raina Hai Thodi Taram Pam... Sar Ko Jhukaye Tu Baitha Kya Hai Yaar Gori Se Naina Jod Phir Duniya Se Dol Ek Din...
There would not have been too many people who have not heard this song at least once. Featuring in the 1986 movie Naam starring Kumar Gaurav, Sanjay Dutt, Amrita Singh and Poonam Dhillon, the song was a mega-hit. Pankaj Udhas was a well known Ghazal singer even then, but this song made him very popular. The movie had music by Laxmikant-Pyarelal and the movie was directed by Mahesh Bhatt and directed by Rajendra Kumar. The song also touched a lot of NRI's, given that the song was essentially a reminder of home, and the people who have been left behind and who just have memories now. This movie was a movie that was supposed to bring Kumar Gaurav some success, but it was the role of Sanjay Dutt as the more wayward son (with a good heart), but who eventually gets involved in drug smuggling which gave a good filip to his fame.

It's been 24 years since this movie has been released, but other than the fact that the guns are newer, the money involved is more, and the violence more brazen, this could be a movie of today's time. The movie set a benchmark in the area of showing the interaction of police, politicians and the criminals / mafia class and how this corrupts society, and warps the mind-frame of even people who want to be honest. And yet, given that this was a movie from the past, without any songs, wonder how many people even remember it. I for one don't remember it appearing on a movie channel in the last few years. Ardh Satya is a very hard-hitting movie, from a Director, Govind Nihalini, who is known for not pulling his punches, and making movies with a message such as Aakrosh, Manthan, etc. Ardh Satya stars a number of intense actors such as Om Puri, Smita Patil, Naseeruddin Shah, Amrish Puri, Sadashiv Amrapurkar, etc. The movie, released in 1983, won the Filmfare Awards for Best Director, Best Film, Best Story and Best Supporting Actor (Sadashiv Amrapurkar). What is the story all about? This is Mumbai of the 1970's, where there is an easy interaction between the police force and the mafia. Om Puri is a dedicated and fiercely honest cop, Anant Welankar. He comes from a family where his father was also a policeman, a man of strict nature. His growing up was in the midst of his father's beliefs, along with beatings of his father, something that had an impact on him. This having said, he attempts to be honest, even though his superiors are shown to be well-oiled into the system, with both Shafi Inamdar and Achyut Potdar who have made their peace with the criminality of the system, and are now benefiting from it. Once in the station, he starts to feel the impact of the power of criminals and politicians. He makes an arrest of some criminals for attacking a policeman, and his sense of accomplished is badly shocked when the goons are let off the next day. Why? Because they worked for Rama Shetty (Sadashiv in an award winning role) who is well connected, they are released pronto and Anant is advised to lay off (a sort of practical orientation to the realities of life) from anything to do with Rama Shetty. But what is a hot-headed police officer to do? In another incident, he again arrests more of Rama Shetty's men with the same consequence. He meets an example of what could happen to a policeman in the same situation, Naseeruddin Shah, who could not compromise, and was evicted from his job and is now a derelict person, in total despair. In the meantime, he has met a simple teacher, Jyotsna (Smita Patil), and in love with her, she also reciprocates. However, given the state that he is in in terms of his frustrations, he starts to drink more and more to alleviate the pain, and his relationship with her suffers. Things get worse when Rama Shetty gets the ticket for elections and is now on the upward path, with Anant having to provide the security for his rally. His frustration reaches such a level that he takes it out on a suspect who dies. And now Anant is in a mess. He can only go to one person for help, his arch-nemesis, Rama Shetty. What does he do? How does he redeem himself ? The movie has a fascinating poem, recited by Om Puri. His voice gives it an extra push. In fact, the whole movie revolves around the incredible acting by Om Puri and Sadashiv Amrapurkar.
Chakravyuh mein ghusne se pehle, kaun tha mein aur kaisa tha, yeh mujhe yaad hi na rahega.
Chakravyuh mein ghusne ke baad, mere aur chakravyuh ke beech, sirf ek jaanleva nikat’ta thi, iska mujhe pata hi na chalega.
Soya hua aadmi jab neend se uthkar chalna shuru karta hai, tab sapnon ka sansar use, dobara dikh hi na paayega.
Us roshni mein jo nirnay ki roshni hai sab kuchh s’maan hoga kya?
Ek palde mein napunsakta, ek palde mein paurush, aur theek taraazu ke kaante par ardh satya.
Today is a day when Sanjay Dutt's fans will be very sad and depressed. Their hero has been sentenced to 6 years in prison under the Arms Act. So, forgetting about the circumstances of the case, let us remember some good movies that he has done. One of them was Vaastav. Sanjay Dutt had acted in a variety of movies before and after Vaastav, but it was Vaastav that gave him a super reputation, that of being a good actor. The movie, released in October, 1999 won Sanjay Dutt the following awards: 1. Year 2000 Filmfare Best Actor 2. Year 2000 Screen Weekly Awards for Best Actor
There are a large number of movies that get made on the topic of a policeman against the politician and his seniors, and a lot of them are made with an extreme amount of gore and blood. A lot of these movies strike a chord with audiences because there can be no better image that that of a honest policemen dedicated to his duty, honest to the bone, and able to thwart (or kill) the evil henchmen, politicians, criminals, etc. Why suddenly get into all this ? A TV channel was showing a Salman Khan movie called Garv, and I am not ashamed to admit that if given a chance, I will watch it umpteen times on TV reruns. The story is not very different; 2 honest cops along with their colleagues, determined to fight it out with the underworld and anybody else getting in their path. Evil men are equally determined to have their way, and will move or bring in governments to ensure that their writ runs, and are determined to even threaten physical harm to the family members of the hero in order to quell them. Then the tide starts turning; government is not supportive, one of the heroes (Arbaaz Khan) is killed in a battle, and evidence planted to show him as a Pakistani spy. This besmirches his reputation. At the same time, the sister of the hero is taken by the evil guys and she is exploited by all of them as a sort of punishment. Hero comes, kills everyone, but then refuses to tell anyone the reason for this mass killing (18 evil men) and is prosecuted. In the end, sister comes to trial, reveals the real reasons and hero is set free. There are many so so moments in the movie, such as the way the policemen will typically beat up all evil people easily, about standing up to the might of a chief minister, and so on; but the movie has an appeal (of course, if you don't like Salman Khan, then you are going to hate the movie). The part of the movie that was interesting was how they get a mandate to do encounter killings (as the Mumbai police did once some years back, and was incredibly successful at scaring the mafia, until it got stopped); and how they were able to explain this encounter policy to press people. Encounter killing is a double edged sword, it satisfies a large section of the population that does not see justice happening, but it can easily be used to kill innocents, as happened in Gujarat, where the wife had to be killed to hide the encounter details. And of course, you kill them all, so no issues about a trial, or witness recanting, and so on. Another thing that I found interesting was the court room drama, as typically such movies end in an orgy of violence, while this movie ended somewhat tamely in the courtroom, although the flashback was full of gore and blood. Why do I like the movie ? It seems a very clean movie, with people being either good or bad :-) (no shades of grey), storyline being fairly simple and concentrating on the fight between the good guy (Salman & Arbaaz) and the evil guys. There is a heroine in the movie, but you actually don't notice her.
