Amitabh Bachchan and Vinod Khanna acted in a number of movies (a total of 6 movies) together in the 1970's, with Hera Pheri being one of them (Amar Akbar Anthony was the most famous of these). Hera Pheri was directed by Prakash Mehra, and starred Amitabh Bachchan, Vinod Khanna, Saira Banu, Sulakshana Pandit, Shreeram Lagoo and Asrani. The movie had one nomination for the Filmfare Award, with Vinod Khanna being nominated for Best Supporting Actor (although he did not win). The movie had some popular music by the music director duo of Kalyanji-Anandji, and the movie script was written by Satish Bhatnagar and Vijay Kaul.
The movie was popular, although it can get complicated. Like many other movies of that period, it showcases the hero (or heroes) as criminals, but good-hearted criminals. They are not terrorists, they don't go around shooting people with guns or something, but they steal jewelery from rich people, or they steal from rich houses, and so on.

The story of this movie is based on the relationship between 2 friends, Ajay (Vinod Khanna) and vijay (a person by the name of Vijay cannot be anybody other than Amitabh Bachchan). Vijay saves Ajay when Ajay is going to jump in front of a train, and ever since then, they became the best of friends. Ajay was sold by his father to get money for his mother's illness, and then his foster parents died, so Ajay was rendered homeless; Vijay on the other hand is troubled by the story of his parents. His father was killed, and it was on that night that his mother turned mad, and he is looking for how to cure her (maybe getting the murderer would help in doing that).
The twist in the story is that the person who killed Vijay's father is actually Ajay's long lost father (the one who sold him away and now seeks him desperately, as much as he seeks to kill Vijay's mother (she witnessed the murder of her husband and is a witness)). In order to get medication for his mom, Vijay plays a con man who, along with Ajay, cons people to earn money. When Ajay finally finds his father, he changes sides and goes to his father, leaving Vijay. What happens next ?
Reshma Aur Shera was one of the earlier movies of Amitabh Bachchan, at a time when he was not the established superstar. The movie is an account of betrayal, love, murder, honour, set against the backdrop of the sands and harshness of Rajasthan. The movie was essentially the creation of Sunil Dutt, who also produced and directed the movie.
The movie was well liked by critics, and was nominated for some international (although it did not win too many). Some of the awards it was nominated for include:
- The Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival
- Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film (Oscars)
The movie was written by S. Ali Raza, with some beautiful music by Jaidev (for which he won the 1972 National Film Award for Best Music Direction (his first award for music)).
The movie is about the feud between 2 families, and in a story that has been seen many times, where the children of both families are in love. The eldest son of Sagat Singh, Shera (Sunil Dutt) is not the more violent and revenge seeking son, trying to make peace. He is very strongly attracted to the daughter Reshma (Waheeda Rehman) of his father's rival, and she also falls in love with him when she sees how he can be strong for peace rather than for more revenge.
And yet there is a third element, the younger son of Sagat Sing, the mute Chotu (Amitabh Bachchan, who plays the role of a skilled shooter, also heavily influenced by his father). Eventually Chotu goes against the wishes of his brother in terms of not having violence and going in for peace and influenced by his father who wants Chotu to shoot the rival and his son both. And they both die; this causes Shera to hunt for his own brother to kill him. What happens next ?
Dus is a fast-paced action thriller starring a number of Bollywood stars Sanjay Dutt, Sunil Shetty, Abhishek Bachchan, Shilpa Shetty, Pankaj Kapoor, Esha Deol and Zayed Khan. The movie was released in 2005, and was a decent hit (costing around Rs. 20 crore, and earned a revenue of Rs. 43 crore). The movie was directed by Anubhav Sinha, with production by Nitin Manmohan and Sohail Maklai. Music was by Vishal-Shekhar, and Ranjit Barot. The movie was fairly long, being around 2 hours & 20 minutes. Music for the film became quite popular, and the title song of 'Dus Bahane' was a hit. The movie also had a twist, in that one of the popular heroes was sacrificed at the climax of the movie, something that a lot of movies avoid. The movie is about the effort of the Anti Terrorist Cell (working somewhat similar to what you would expect the RAW to function, but without all the glamour that the movie depicts) to stop a massive bombing of which it does not have much information, and for which there are only 10 days left. Sanjay Dutt is the head of this organization, with the name of Siddhant Dheer. Along with him, his younger brother Shashank Dheer (Abhishek Bachchan), Aditya Singh (Zayed Khan), Aditi Kumar (Shilpa Shetty) are the others in the organization. Neha (Esha Deol) is an agent in Canada who starts the entire process, by reporting the existence of a plan being spear-headed by Jambwal, about whom they do not have any information, and whose identity they do not know.
The movie attempts to play the game of multiple double-crossing, about people betraying each other, about people not being who they claim to be. Because the ATS does not know the identity of Jambwal, they cannot even confirm that if they catch a person, whether that person is Jambwal or not. And this happens when they catch Mehendi (Pankaj Kapoor), an agent of Jambwal who is terrified of Jambwal. They are trying to interrogate him to find out more Jambwal, but they land in more problems. The car provided to them by Neha is rigged to explode if it slows down (English movie Speed?), so who is Neha. Zayed Khan is a bomb expert who can detect if a bomb is planted, and what are the chances of defusing it in time. They are further trying to not reveal their plan to the Canadian police, even though the plan involves the terrorists bombing a stadium where a match is ongoing, so as to attack the Indian Prime Minister who will be there to attend the match (on May 10th). They uncover traitors in their midst, although each of these traitors extract a cost. The action peaks in the end, as they are at the stadium where there are multiple bombs planted, and their mission is to get the bombs away without loss of life (with the bombs being constructed of C4, a military explosive (where did terrorists get C4 from?)). The movie is a much watchable movie, be sure to watch (although the logic can sometimes fail).

How many people are there who would not have seen Parinda (well, atleast if you take people who are more than 30 years old). Parinda was not director Vidhu Vinod Chopra's first movie, but if there are some movies that he will be most remembered by, it will be for this movie. Similarly, both Anil Kapoor and Madhuri Dixit have reckoned that this movie is one of their best movies. The movie was produced and directed by Vidhu Vinod Chopra, written by Shivkumar Subramaniam, and starred Jackie Shroff, and Nana Patekar in pivotal roles. Music was by R D Burman, and lyrics by Khursheed Hallauri. Some other actors who had great roles in the movies were Tom Alter, Anupam Kher, and Suresh Oberoi.
The movie was released in 1989. It tells the gripping story of the Bombay underworld, the fight between the rival gangs, the lack of trust and warfare between them, the role of the police. In the end, the movie was about the guy who got involved in a gang for survival, and who learns the hard way that life in the gang is brutal. In the end, everybody is expendable, life is brutal; and even a loyal member of the gang cannot save his own brother. The reason why the movie was so popular was due to its realism, essentially attributed to the technical crew of the film, with Binod Pradhan´s cinematography being a great hit. The overall sound of the movie, the shots with the pigeons, the mad gun shooting amid the honeymoon lovemaking, the various deaths in the movie, the climatic scene where Jackie Shroff kills his own boss (and the killer of his brother) by burning him to death in a fire of alcohol bottles, all of these were shots that still enthrall people. The movie is about the love between the 2 brothers, Jackie and Anil. When they were young and fighting for survival, Jackie joins Anna's gang and prospers. He sends Anil out for studying, with Anil all the time unaware that his brother actually worked for a gang leader (and too, a psychotic one). Jackie tries to keep his brother away from the gang, but eventually fails when Anil's friend, Inspector Anupam Kher is killed by Anna's men (using the meeting called by Anil). Madhuri Dixit is Paro, a teacher, who is in love with Anil, but moves away when she learns that he is now part of the gang. The rest of the movie is about the revenge taken by Anil, the consequences when Anna learns about this, and the reaction of Jackie. This movie is a must watch.

Sometimes you come across a movie that shakes you a lot, and which leaves a promise that there is a space for movie making that is different from the standard cliches, or romances, or manufactured tragedies. 'A Wednesday' is a movie that I got around to watching much after the movie was released, and I was thoroughly impressed. You may not agree with everything that the movie propounds, but you cannot be but impressed by the pace of the movie, by some superb acting from the various stars, by the ability to leave you sympathizing with a person who directs acts of murder, and eventually admiring the director, Neeraj Pandey, who dared to make a movie with no main female lead in a romantic situation, and most of all, a movie without any songs. The movie certainly was not a rich action sequences laden movie such as 'Singh in King', but given a choice, I would rather watch a movie like 'A Wednesday'. This was a movie that gained extremely from word of mouth, colleagues who had seen the movie gave enthusiastic reviews, and I would do the same if somebody asked me.
Without revealing the end, the twist in the movie as well as the impassioned speech by the bomb maker comes at the end of a gripping movie, and keep you on your seats till the final credits come to an end. The performances by Anupam Kher, Naseeruddin Shah, Jimmy Shergill and Deepal Shaw are all first rate, and the fact that they are able to make their presence felt in such a short movie (1.5) hours makes the performances even more creditable. The movie also introduces the concept of a backlash by the 'stupid, common man'; all of us who live in a city and go to our work places, and some of whom die in bomb blasts that happen in our cities. The movie is about the flashback by a retired police commissioner of Bombay, Prakash Rathod [Anupam Kher]. He remembers an incident that happened in the space of 4 hours, on a normal weekday afternoon, the details of the incident not being present on any file or records (only in the memory of those involved). He gets a call from an anonymous caller about bombs kept in the city at different locations, and for defusing which, 4 Muslim terrorists in police custody needed to be rounded up from their separate locations. The caller, Naseeruddin Shah, situated on the top of a building, almost like a picnic, makes the police believe in his story when he discloses the location of a bomb right in the police station next to the police headquarters. Anupam Kher gets complete authority from the Chief Minister to handle the negotiations, and gets down to business. He is obviously dealing with a person who knows how to conduct himself, defeating attempts to track his details. Eventually, inspite of a crack team and some fast police work, spear headed by a hot headed police officer (Jimmy Shergill in a great role), Anupam Kher is forced to follow all of the directions he is given, till the time that the terrorists are transported to an air field in Juhu. If you have not watched the movie, you should watch it.
Sarkar Raj was a move that was awaited for quite some time; it came after a few clunkers for The Factory of Ram Gopal Verma such as 'Aag', 'Darling', etc. Memories of his earlier movies such as Satya, Company, Rangeela, and Sarkar (for which Sarkar Raj is the sequel) were fading out due to these recent disastrous movies that he made. All his admissions that the movies were bad, mistakes were made, etc, don't really help in lifting his reputation. So, this movie was awaited for multiple reasons: - This movie showcased the Bachchan clan; Amitabh, Abhishek, and Aishwarya (not Jaya though) - It was supposed to have the same kind of suspense, the taut and slick making that was there in the original movie Sarkar (made in 2005)
Unlike some of his other movies where the actual direction was by other people, Sarkar Raj was actually directed by Ram Gopal Verma. Other credits for the movie include script by Prashant Pandey, background score by Amar Mohile (and the background score is haunting and fast throughout the movie, although a bit loud), cinematography by Amit Roy, and action by Allan Amin. The movie takes off from where the previous movie had ended, with the Nagres (minus Kay Kay Menon) being in command of Maharashtra through their reign of force (although the way that elected politicians are seen to be humiliated by them is a bit patronising). There is the normal tussle between the ruling Chief Minister and his opponents, but both of them pay respects to Sarkar (Amitabh) and his son and heir Shankar (Abhishek). It is at this stage that a beautiful tall CEO of an energy company, Sheppard Power Plant in the form of Anita Ranjan (Aishwarya Rai) presents a plan for a power plant that will meet the future energy needs of Maharashtra. The only hitch is that the best place to setup the plant is a place called Thackerwadi, in rural Maharashtra. Sarkar is against this proposal, but his son sees this as a beneficial mechanism, and is willing to go to any lengths to move this proposal ahead. He first tries to convince the local leader and Gandhian Rao Saheb, and then convince the rest of the villagers about the advantages of this plant. However, he is in way above his head. The grandson of Rao Saheb (Somji) starts to work against the deal, and to canvass people against this deal, making the deal a tough sell. Further, the management of the power company seems to think that Gujarat is now a better deal for this plant. Abhishek does not seem to realize what he he is against, and even his power (which he hardly ever uses) is unable to prevent harm to him, his wife (Tanissha in a small role) and in the end, he cannot even prevent his own killing by a hired sharp-shooter (the shooting scene was not very good, seemed amateurish). It is only when Amitabh, taking on responsibility again, starts to unravel the mystery behind his death and to show what he is capable of (basically kills everybody involved, somewhat like Michael Corleone ordering the killing of all those against the family). And these are the weak points of the movie - If the family is so powerful and people so scared by them, how is that a massive conspiracy can get created against them (after all, in this case, there must be a large number of people who knew there was a conspiracy) without the involved fearing that the Sarkar will kill them if their involvement in the conspiracy became known. Secondly, the last 20 minutes seem like magic, where the writer wrote a twist in the story that seemed to have been manufactured out of thin air. So, the end where the last murder is shown, that emerged out of thin air, but was very chilling. Acting is okay, with some strong parts. Aishwarya did not get all that great a role (it seemed in the end that she was being projected to be the leader in any sequel), Amitabh was good in parts. This was basically Abhishek's movie, but he came across a person who was not in touch with reality, could not comprehend that he was just a pawn in a conspiracy.
Mahesh Bhatt has been making movies for a long time, and they have been very good movies. So, for example, I really liked some of his older movies such as Arth, Saransh, Janam, Naam, Murder, Woh Lamhe, Daddy, Ashiqui, Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke, Dil Hain Ke Manta Nahin, Sadak, Sir, Tamana, etc. He has also turned out turkeys such as Duplicate. In recent time, Bhatt has moved out of the director post and is partner in the banner Vishesh films (along with his brother) that produces movies. It is expected that movies made in the banner retain the touch of Mahesh Bhatt to some degree, with a strong focus on human relations, relationships whether they be a marriage, or outside marriage. However, Jannat disappointed. The story of a person who wants to attain success, and a great deal of it (portrayed by Emran Hashemi); he does not seem to know the difference between right and wrong.
I was sitting with a group of around 7-8 colleagues (mostly eager movie goers), and after around 45 minutes (having given the movie enough time, we started laughing and wondering whether we should actually leave during half-time) and it was hard to sit there and watch the movie. The movie seemed corny, there were so many missing gaps in the storyline (such as how he managed to get this 'magical' sixth sense, and why did he have to fix matches if he could anyhow figure out the results; why did the heroine fall in love with him; how did he get the phone number of the heroine (exact call center location), or figured out her address (just from knowing her name). You cannot make a credible story and then assume that all such things happen magically. Later when somebody asked me why the name was called 'Jannat', the only reason that I could think of was that this was a name given to represent what the hero wanted, and instead what his life turned out to be on earth was actually the reverse. So Arjun (Emran Hashmi playing a typical role with heavy shades of grey) wants to be rich, extremely rich, and this is his single minded agenda. He does not care about what his friends say, about what his parents say, not about the warnings of the initially friendly policeman, and later his girlfriend; he is right in what he does and nothing can shake him from that. It is very difficult to identify with such a person, and the way he breaks the glass in the supermarket initially (when he sees a ring that the heroine wants but cannot buy) seems very strange. The heroine (Sonal Chauhan), in a debut role as the person who tries to reform Arjun shows some signs of maturity, but her performance when she confronts him seems to be lacking the passion of a person who is trying to do what she strongly believes in. She does look attractive, and shows resemblance to both Sonali Bendre and Deepti Bhatnagar. However, it is the script that seems to let down the overall movie. The dialogues, as well as the inter-meshing of the romance with the story of betting seems mixed up, and the sudden movements of the hero away from a life of betting, and back to it again, seems very sudden and without too much of basis (given that the hero ultimately believes that only he knows best). The ending seems so much unlike the normal character of the hero, especially when such a smart guy seems so stupid that he would do a suspicious gesture in front of the police. The music was good, but kept on resonating throughout the movie, and by the end, even my colleagues who had liked the music had got somewhat tired of the songs. The attempt to bring in the recent death of the Pakistani coach, Bob Woolmer does not seem realistic at all. The movie is directed by Kunal Deshmukh, starring Emraan Hashmi,Rizwan Ahmed, Sonal Chauhan and Sameer Kochhar. The film is produced by Vishesh Films. Pritam scores the music for this movie.
There are times when you watch that is so impressive that you don't mind watching it again. I found Prahaar to be one such movie. The movie was released in 1991, and it has been quite some time, but it can't take away the topical nature of the movie. The movie was directed by Nana Patekar and produced by Sudhakar Bokade. The movie had music by Laxmikant Pyarelal and lyrics by Mangesh Kulkarni. Nana Patekar showed a commendable amount of skill in extracting good performances from the cast of characters that included Dimple Kapadia and Madhuri Dixit (there was a story floating around the time when the movie was made that he wanted a natural look, and so when one of the female leads reported to the set in make-up, he asked her to wash the make-up off). The movie does not have a direct villain, but there is a struggle against many kinds of bad elements, whether it be terrorists, or the normal city ruffians and hoodlums who take hafta (extortion money), or even of the normal population who have been so terrorised that they have lost some of their sense of right or wrong. The movie also has some good performances from the second tier of characters such as Gautam Joglekar (who plays Peter D'Souza). The movie starts off as the story about men who have joined the army as commandos. They start to undergo the army commando training course under the tutelage of Major Chauhan (Nana - who actually took a brief training course at the army commando training course), and the course can be pretty hard, forcing many of them to feel like dropping out. Some do, but Peter does not and completes the course finally. By that time, he has developed a respect for Major Chauhan. The training course depicted is fairly detailed, with a certain amount of humour showing up. At the end of the course, they are called to undertake an anti-terrorist operation, successful, but Peter is crippled and has to return home and leave the army. He reaches home, and his fiancee Madhuri is glad to have him back. His army training however soon causes him to start opposing the local mafia who extort money, and soon he is killed. At this time, Major Chauhan comes for the funeral, and sees how the local police is unconcerned and takes no action. Major Chauhan takes up as a paying guest in the house of Dimple (a young widow with a small child) and gets affectionate towards the child (they never actually show any romance between Nana and Dimple, although there are many hints towards something like this possibly developing). Once he actually takes on the ruffians single-handedly when they tease Dimple, but soon realizes that the local citizens are so suppressed by the mafia that they actually turn on Nana for going against the ruffians. And then the epic scene where the gangsters (this was from an age where the use of guns was less) decide to attack Dimple's house and Nana. They first scare Dimple and her child, and then they taunt Nana. And then the fight begins - you can see the untrained ruffians being very confident of their youth and numbers against a person who is after a single person and older than them, and yet soon they realize that the person whom they are attacking can defeat all of them, and Nana proceeds to do just that. In the process, he actually kills them, and is soon hauled up before the court. And his speech about being a soldier, and fighting against the vermin of society goes in vain, since the judge declares that his fight is misplaced, he is not responsible for repairing the civilian society, and he is sent for counseling until he is over this. The movie is a movie that talks about how the fight against injustice is something that all of us can handle, how the personal conviction and strength of a person can make them win odds, and yet how sometime the whole fight can be futile in the face of a disinterested administration.
In order to make a movie successful in today's world, there are certain ways. One of the most important ways is for it to be a hit in the first week - with the number of shows on display during the first week, the movie can make a large amount of movie in the first week. And Race got lucky. For 2 weeks before Race, there was no movie released, generating a huge amount of pent-up demand. In addition, the school boards for 10th and 12th class had just got over, and a new movie would be totally irresistible. And of course, you had the promos promising lots of action, hot stars, plenty of skin, and songs that were played on the radio repeatedly, generating yet more demand. With all these factors, did the movie actually cooperate ? Well, I would say that just the story and the twists and turns of the movie make it worth watching once, but after that would get difficult. But I never did understand the reason for the movie having the name of race; there are horse races, and a final race (that somehow did not really impress); the rest of the movie was about intrigue and betrayal. So this was the first question I asked my spouse after the movie - why this name ?
The movie has an impressive pedigree. The movie is produced by Kumar S. Taurani, Ramesh S. Taurani and directed by the action director duo of Abbas-Mastan; further the movie stars currently hot stars such as Anil Kapoor, Saif Ali Khan, Akshaye Khanna, Bipasha Basu, Katrina Kaif, and Sameera Reddy. Music is by Pritam and lyrics by Sameer. So nothing could possibly go wrong, right ? Well, hold onto the champagne. Methinks the directors have tried too much. So what you have is a fast movie, with an incredible amount of twists and turns in the story. In fact, there were a couple of times in the movie where I got surprised by what happened - I was expecting something else to happen and I got a real surprise. So, in that way, the surprise element was there throughout. However, one also got the feel that the director over-did this, since there was also a feeling that the twists and turns were put in just to increase the twists and turns. So, for example, the character of Katrina Kaif in the second half suddenly changes, and one cannot understand why. The movie is about the relationship between 2 brothers - Ranvir Singh and Rajeev Singh. They are essentially very close, with Ranveer Singh (Saif Ali Khan) being the responsible elder brother and Rajeev Singh (Akshaye Khanna) being the alcoholic younger brother. They have a business (horse farm and associated) that is in debt, and need to get money by selling a property. Ranveer can be quite ruthless as exemplified by the way he kills his former jockey or destroys Dalip Tahil, his rival. Ranveer has a very efficient secretary in the form of mini-skirted and devoted Katrina Kaif, and is slowly getting closer to a model Bipasha Basu. To complete the gang, Anil Kapoor is a famous detective, and Sameera Reddy his dumb (and attractive) assistant. What both brothers do have is an insurance policy worth $100 million to their heirs. When they are not married, they are each others inheritors, but after marriage, the wife becomes the heir. The movie is about everything being a betrayal, nobody being what they seem to be, and best of all, everybody doing whatever they need to make themselves more money. The whole movie works in a conflict mode, whether it be planning for betrayal, or an investigation.
Songs of the movie are decent, with some better, and others not so:

Omkara (release in 2006) was a much awaited movie. Director Vishal Bhardwaj had earlier made a name for himself with Makdee and Maqbool (starring an incredible performance by Irfan Khan), and his Hindi interpretation of Shakespeare's Othello had already lead to much anticipation, with the prospect of Saif Ali Khan playing a baddie's role being much awaited. The movie delivered, but not too much as Vishal would have thought. It won a great amount of critical acclaim, and extreme kudos for the 2 best performances of Saif Ali Khan and Konkona Sen. Vivek Oberoi and Kareina Kapoor won praise, while the performance of Ajay Devgun could have been better - much more is expected out of an actor who has given a performance like Gangajal.
No matter, the movie belongs to Saif Ali Khan. His portrayal of the angry avenger Iago is brilliant. The movie would have been a commercial success if not for the dark atmosphere of the movie, and the crude dialog (replete with the Hindi curse words that you would hear in such a setting, but which inhibit more families and larger audiences from attending). Further, the portrayal of the settings of a rural UP are not exactly geared for wider commercial. Having said that, the movie did very well in markets abroad such as the US and British markets. Ajay Devgun plays Omkara (Othello), Kareena Kapoor plays Dolly Mishra (Desdemona), Konkona Sen Sharma plays Indu (Iago's wife Emilia), Vivek Oberoi plays Kesu 'the firangi' (since he is from the city) (Cassio), and Bipasha Basu plays Billo Chamanbahar (Bianca). Omkara is a local bahubali, a person capable of getting things done as well as controlling a criminal gang, and thus very valuable to the local politician Tiwari Bhaisaab (Naseeruddin Shah). This helps him right in the beginning when he elopes with Dolly and her father objects. When his daughter states that she was not abducted, but eloped on her own, he feels ashamed. This is a small twist in the story. The main story is when Tiwari moves onto a bigger role and wants Omkara to take his local seat. This is to be the culmination of Langda Tyaagi's (Saif Ali Khan) ambitions, to be the successor to Omkara. He is shocked and driven into a rage when Omkara appoints Kesu to be the next successor. In this rage, he starts planning revenge, and does so without any hesitation or thought, and this is the guts of the movie. The cunning that he deploys to break both Omkara and Kesu, and in the process use a number of other people such as his own wife, Omkara's would-be-bride Dolly and the jilted lover of Dolly. His plans play on the most base of human emotions, trust, and eventually he manages to convince Omkara about an affair between his Dolly and his trusted lieutant Kesu, leading to a final conflict where Omkara destroys his own world and then takes his own life in regret over what he has done. The screenplay, direction and music is all by Vishal Bhardwaj, lyrics are by Gulzar. The song 'Beedi jalai' became a national hit

Krantiveer was a movie released in 1994; an all and out commercial movie released by the movie-maker who has made other patriotic movies (Mehul Kumar), it was also a movie that seeked to portray the transformation in one man when faced with evil. Even though the main character has been depicted as a person who is selfish, uncaring about others (other than his immediate family), a transformation is shown based on 2 major incidents that affect his life - the murder of his adopted father, and the riot in his locality that caused normal people to transform into murderers and brings out communal feelings. Krantiveer was a role essayed brilliantly by Nana Patekar, turning the movie into a commercial as well as critical success. He puts forth some intense emotions into the movie, so you can believe him when he is essaying the role of a normal guy in the chawl who could not care less about the efforts of the journalist, or when he he suddenly becomes violent at the cremation ground of his adopted father. He is equally at ease taking out money from his father's safe and not caring about the repercussions, or the reaction of his mother and grandfather when they find him being delinquent and turn him out. However, it is transformation that is riveting.
Of course, the end, where he does mass murder, his speech, etc is a bit forced, but even there, his final speech at the hanging ground where he accuses the crowd of being impotent and uncaring about what is happening around them, and the way that he symbolically turns against them is interesting. However, the movie is not like a 'Ghulam' where in the end, the crowd essentially becomes active, here, the crowd still remains uncaring till the end, it is the single person transformation that is interesting. The other interesting occasion in the movie is in the aftermath of the riot (turned communal riot) in the chawl, when he single-handedly does his bit (using some blood and direct force) to try and break away the Hindu Muslim separation that seems to be coming. This is a very intense scene, similar to the short scene where he refuses to get involved in favor of a widow who is facing oppression, but manages to get her son to figure out what to do, and eventually gets her to react directly instead of moaning at her fate. The movie is about this guy Pratap (Nana Patekar) who was the grandson of a freedom fighter, but who was turned out by his family when very young because of his misdeeds. He manages to find a place in the heart of a slum lord Laxmidas (Paresh Rawal) and his son Atul (Atul Agnihotri). They have a pleasant time with a budding romance between Atul and Mamta (Mata Kulkarni), the daughter of a rich builder Yograj (Tinnu Anand). The slum in which they live also has a crusading journalist Megha (Dimple Kapadia) living in it, who tries to get Pratap involved her crusade, but he keeps on shying away. He does a bit from time to time, but nothing very great. Things change when Yograj sets his eye on the slum for a big development scheme, and involves all the corrupt elements, the politicians, the judge, police, and the mafia leader Cheetah (Danny). As a part of this, communal riots are planned, and then Paresh Rawal is killed. This is when Pratap gets fired up, and carries out a campaign to kill all of them in broad daylight, for which he is sentenced to death. what happens then ? It's a fairly fast movie, well worth the watch. The movie has lyrics by Sameer, and music by Anand-Milind.
Ranju Ban Gaya Gentleman is one of the early Shahrukh movies, made before he became the King Khan and one of the hottest property of Bollywood. The movie has a fresh feel to it, being made (director: Aziz Mirza) when there was not so much money riding on Shahrukd Khan and movies could afford to skip the current formula of hard core masala, breakneck action, and so on. The movie has a nice flow to it, with a simplistic story set mainly around ambition. One needs to remember that this was 1992, when India was still totally under the grip of socialism, and movies high-lighted naked ambition as something bad and ugly, something that could cause a person to loose their morals and their bearings.
And so it is in this movie, where the good is represented in the purity of the chawl girl, Renu (Juhi Chawla) who is sweet, supporting, pure as opposed to the crassness portrayed by the rich girl Sapna (Amrita Singh) who has fallen for the freshness of Shahrukh Khan. However, because she is rich, she is portrayed as manipulative, willing to use her power and pull to pull Raju away from Renu and towards her. The movie also has a terrific portrayal by Nana Patekar who plays a street performer, incredibly wise. The movie starts with Raju Mathur, a god loving young man appearing in Bombay to make his career over here as an engineer. He however is not able to contact the relative on whom he was depending (relative not present), and sleeps the night in a temple. Jai (Nana Patekar) offers him advice and support, including a place to stay. In the chwal, he meets Renu (Juhi Chawla), an assistant to the rich Chabbria (Navin Nishchol). Raju gets a job, and also gets the attention of Chabbra's rich daughter, Sapna (Amrita Singh). She starts him on the way up, getting him better work and feeding his ambition, and at the same time, taking him away from Renu. And then he gets the responsibility for a bridge, a major project for him. However, unknown to him, his opponents conspire to replace good construction material with inferior material, and the inevitable happens. The bridge collapses, and people die. He is pointed out as the responsible person, and in the ultimate compromise, he blames the tragedy on other people, including the people in the chawl where he used to live. However, not everything is lost. He realizes how much he has changed, and where his ambition has brought him (including losing the people whom he used to treasure and who were his true friends). And so he turns back, and essentially is shown as becoming back to what he was - not an ambition driven cold professional.
Video of the songs from the movie (music by Jatin Lalit; lyrics by Dev Kohli, Mahendra Dehlavi, Madan Pal, Manoj Darpan, Vinoo Mahendra, Minoo):

(It is so difficult to write about a thriller movie like Johnny Gaddar without giving the story away, so if you feel that you are losing your suspense of the story, stop reading) If you liked the Saif Ali Khan and Urmila Matondkar movie 'Ek Hasina Thi', you would like Johnny Gadar. There is an element to this movie that makes it a great thriller, including the part about there being a lot of suspense for the characters in the movie while the viewer knows everything. There are no spectacular action scenes, or expensive stunts; it's all about putting in an element of suspense in the interactions. What seems important is to have a slick story line, although the second half does stretch the story line a bit. However, it was interesting to learn that Director Sriram Raghavan did not shoot with a bound script; apparently they just had the beginning, the middle part, and the end; the rest of the script was improvised. The director is clearly inspired from James Hadley Chase (if you have read some of the novels of Chase, it will seem apparent). There are people of all shades, but rarely do you come across a true person or a person who is all white without any shades of grey in his character. This can't be more true than in this movie, given that all the characters have strong shades of grey in their character. Somehow, the movie seems more realistic, as you realize that this is what real people are like. The casting is decent, with some good roles by the characters of Neil Mukesh, Vinay Pathak, Zakir Hussain, Ashwini Kaleskar. Rimi Sen does a good role of the wife of Shardul (Zakir Hussain) in love with Vikram (Neil Mukesh), but absolutely terrified of her husband and what he would do if he got to know. The movie is about a gang of people who need to collect a lot of money to avail of a get rich quick scheme, and collect Rs. 2.5 crore. Vikram, the youngest of the lot, decides to use this opportunity to loot all the cash and steals the money from Daya Shetty in a train. He also kills Daya by accident, and thus starts the quest to keep ahead of the others (who don't know who stole the money, but suspect each other). Mukesh's first kill is by accident, but after this, he slowly kills the others one by them, and very few of them really suspect him, till almost the end when they get killed. But, in the end, as in Chase's novels, the killer or thief can't really get away, and he is killed (and that too by mistake by the widow of one of the persons he killed). The movie remains fairly taut, and the tension is apparent as things move ahead. You know who did the killing, but still wait to see as to how he gets away from the various gang members who want to find out who did the killing and then kill the thief. A slightly weak point in the movie is the character of Dharmendra, you expect the leader of such a gang to be much more villainous and be more able to smell out who the killer actually is. Music is by Shankar Mahadevan, Ehsaan Noorani, Loy Mendonca and Lyrics by Nilesh Mishra, Hardkaur, Jaideep Sahni

A typical urban gangster movie of the 70's and 80's (thus excluding the rural dacoit movie such as Sholay) was all about the larger than life character, fighting against the police, and maybe reforming or dying. It was the odd movie such as Deewar which tried to look into the mind of a gangster, but these were still movies about larger than life characters. It was films like Vaastav & Satya that tried to break into the basic characters mind, and show the goings on around them, along with the overall despair that involved such criminals (and make no mistake, no matter the circumstances, the new age of movies display them as criminals even when showing their sequence of steps to becoming a gangster).
A refreshing new movie in this regard is the movie called Gangster (directed by Anurag Basu for Mahesh Bhatt). The movie pulls no punches, showing the old game of gangster vs. police through the eyes of a young woman forced to make her choices. The movie is truly a different movie, able to de-glamorize the whole gangster-moll and romance bit. The movie does have some unrealistic parts as well, such as the alcohol-sunken portrayal of a bar dancer by Kangana Ranaut in a great debut role. With some excellent roles given to both Shiney Ahuja and Emraan Hashmi, this movie is also a good example of a movie doing well on the basis of story and performances (and some good music). Story is all in flashback, showing 2 people firing guns at each other; and then the story starts to unfold. Kanagana essays the role of Simran, a dancer turned into an alcoholic. She has dreams of a normal family, but those are not to be. One day she gives shelter to a dreaded gangster Daya (Shiney Ahuja) when he is being chased by the cops. Why she does so is not clear ! However, Daya starts visiting her club and soon saves her from a drunk customer, and then asks her to come home. And so naturally, they start having an affair; but always on the move (far removed from the normal life that she wanted) since he is on the run from the police. He even ignores the advice from his patron (Gulshan Grover in a short role) to leave her. They decide to escape from India so as to escape the police and the pressure; and he goes off to Mauritius and she is sent off to South Korea. And it is here that she starts sinking into the pressured and dreary life of an alcoholic, which is when Emraan Hashmi meets her (he is a singer, and starts showing interest in her). She succumbs to her loneliness and has a one-night stand with him. In the meantime Shiney reaches there and beats up Emraan almost to death. However, this is the last we see of the proud don, since he now tries to lead a normal life for her, doing menial work in order to earn money. But, we all know what happens from a one-night stand - Kangana is now pregnant with Emraan's child. Emraan encourages her to get Shiney to surrender to the police, and, in a fateful decision that she will always regret, she picks Emraan's side. And then after Shiney is gone, she learns that Emraan was a policeman, and the finale is about her trying to take vengeance. The movie is a worth-watch, and with some hummable songs. Movie has music by Pritam Chakraborty; lyrics are by Sayeed Qadri, Mayur Puri, Nilesh Mishra
