Guddi was a movie released in 1971, produced and directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee (who made a number of famous movies during the 70's) and was written by Gulzar. However, the movie is best famous for giving Jaya Bachchan, then a young and upcoming actress, a canvas for her to show her acting skills and fortunately for her, the movie did well and was praised (thus leading to a lot of praise for Jaya Bachchan). The movie also starred Dharmendra, Utpal Dutt, and had a number of other starts such as Amitabh Bachchan, Om Prakash and Pran making guest appearances in the movie; this was also because the movie was also about a big star and his work in Bollywood, so a lot of details about Bollywood were shown in the movie. In fact, some other stars such as Biswajeet, Rajesh Khanna, Vinod Khanna, Ashok Kumar, Dilip Kumar, Naveen Nischol, Om Prakash, Pran, Shashikala and Mala Sinha played cameo roles in the movie.
The movie also had some good music with songs such as "Bole Re Papihara" and "Humko Man Ki Shakti Dena" (sung by Vani Jairam) becoming very famous for their classical background. The music for the film was given by Vasant Desai.
The movie is about the concept of being attracted by the on-screen personality of a star, based on what the star plays as characters, instead of knowing the real life of the star (and where the character of the star could be very different from the characters played). In this case, Kusum (Jaya Bachchan) is a schoolgirl who develops an incredible crush for the movie star Dharmendra; she lives with her family; but when she visits Mumbai, that is when the crush that she has for Dharmendra really reveals itself.
At that time, her sister-in-law's brother, Navin (Bengali film actor Samit Bhanja) falls in love with her, but when she is so much after Dharmendra, it is impossible that she could even listen to anybody else. Navin takes help from his own uncle, Utpal Dutt, who also knows Dharmendra, and they resolve to show Kusum the difference between the reel life and real life (taking help from Dharmendra for this).
I watched Bhootnath just the day after having watched Jannat just the previous day, and given that my impression of Jannat was not good, any movie would have been good. But Bhootnath was a movie that impressed in parts. The Director, Vivek Sharma, tried to take many human emotions into the movie; thus taking the movie into 3 separate parts - the first part where the ghost appears to be evil and a danger to whoever tries to enter the property; the second part where the child makes friend with the ghost and turns him into a proper civilized person-like character with human emotions; and the third part where there is an attempt to throw in a lot of tear-jerkering emotional scene so that the ghost can disappear and everything can turn out normal. In the end, these attempts to make the movie cater to many interests put a lot of strain on the overall movie, and my feeling is that it did not turn out as well as could be. The movie takes on a heavy social issue of how children go abroad, and become of that land. The movie is geared towards kids, and that was clear when I saw the songs. They were all songs designed to appeal to children, and it did seem a bit different to see songs that had a lot of kids in them; but most of the audience was adults, so was wondering whether there was a mismatch in terms of the advertising of the movie versus the intended effect of the advertising. The movie has a cast that is capable of some great things - Amitabh Bachchan, Aman Siddiqui, Juhi Chawla, Rajpal Yadav, Satish Shah, Priyanshu Chatterjee and Shahrukh Khan. Amitabh Bachchan gives a good role, but one feels that in the middle of the movie, he gets overshadowed by the kid, and then in the latter half of the movie, Shahrukh Khan seems to get most of the attention (Shahrukh Khan had a role that was more than a guest appearance, but less than a full role). Rajpal Yadav was very thoroughly under-used in the movie, getting 2 very brief scenes (almost like a cameo). The movie is about the intersection of the characters of the young boy, Banku, and the ghost of Kailash Nath. The family of Shahrukh Khan, an engineer with a cruise company, comprises of his wife Juhi Chawla, and son Banku (Banku is a very naughty guy, and it soon shows up in school where he gets into numerous fracas (showed in a humorous way)). Shahrukh has to move his family to Goa, and his company arranges for a rental in Nath Villa (one wonders how his company did a rental in a villa that everyone knows is haunted). Juhi does not believe in ghosts, and their son has no idea about what a ghost is. And then Banu meets the Ghost, and soon manages to control the ghost through his antics, his innocence and his questions (it helps that the ghost is of a man who was devoted to his son, and who died pining for him). And then there is a lot of camadrie between Amitabh and Amar, while Juhi is not able to believe that there is a such a thing as a ghost. This means that the ghost learns to dress normally, and even to shed tears when Banku suffers a serious injury. There is an excellent scene when Juhi realizes that her son was telling the truth, during a stage performance, and is able to actually imagine as to where the ghost must be standing. From this point onwards, the movie becomes very serious, with the aim being to help the ghost forgive his son (who had gone abroad and not returned until his mother died pining for him), and eventually help him attain salvation. At this point, the movie moves into heavy emotional scenes, and I could see the atmosphere suddenly becoming silent in the movie hall. Music is by Vishaal Shekhar, but one felt that it was unnecessary other than the heavy Samay Ka Pahiya.
The movie stars these main stars, Anil Kapoor & Lara Dutta, Salman Khan and Esha Deol, Fardeen Khan and Celina Jaitley, Bipasha Basu. No Entry was one of a series of movies that dealt in a comical way with marriages and adultery. These movies were of a typical adult nature, and included movies such as Masti, No Entry, etc; movies that were criticized by a number of people for some amount of crudeness as well as depicting adult relationships in a casual manner. However, they were successful to some degree, with No Entry being a good hit. No Entry was a bit leff crude than the others, and the skin show was a bit toned down - the girls wore short clothes, but these were depicted as their normal clothes, there was a lower amount of man-girl close contact shown in the movie. The movie was directed by Anees Bazmee and produced by Boney Kapoor. Music is by Anu Malik.
No Entry deals with these 3 friends and the girls in their lives - Anil Kapoor is a journalist married to a very suspicious Lara Dutta who forever suspects him of having a relationship with other girls and he is constantly having to defend himself. Fardeen Khan is the unmarried photographer who works for Anil Kapoor, and together they make a team that takes exposes of important figures and shows them in the newspaper. He meets Celina Jaitely by accident (she miscontrues some of his actions in terms of him trying to commit suicide and tries to save him, and he is unable to understand what she is trying to do), in the process, they fall in love. Salman Khan (I did not understand what he did for a business) used to have lots of dalliances with girls while his wife Esha Deol understands him to be an ideal husband. Introduce the club dancer and call girl Bipasha Basu to this whole scene, and you end up with complications. Both Anil Kapoor and Fardeen Khan do not believe in having a relationship outside their marriage, and once threatened Salman Khan with exposure (even though he is a good friend of theirs). Salman Khan then promised that he would take revenge, and he offers Bipasha the sum of Rs. 2 lakhs if she could tempt Anil Kapoor to stray; and she gets on the job. And this is when things heat up. Bipasha goes out with Anil to a mall, where Lara Dutta also turns up and leads to a tough time for Anil since he has to avoid being seen by Lara (including getting his office phone forwarded to his mobile number). Things heat up further when Anil is caught up with Bipasha, and to save himself, he has to get her to be seen as Fardeen's girlfriend, something that causes complications when Fardeen gets closer to Celina (since now Lara believes that Fardeen is involved with Bipasha and cannot understand why he is getting involved with Celina). Things heat up further to the extent that both Fardeen and Anil look to Salman for help, and that is when things turn troublesome for Salman as well since his wife hears his boasting about his escapades and his 'trusting' wife. Eventually, things turn out well after a lot of tension. Bipasha is into all this since she needs money for her ailing husband, and the three guys are accepted back by their wives after a final episode involving a cliff, a rope and a snake, with all 3 hanging over the cliff. Overall, the movie can be watched at least once. One of the better known short sayings from this movie was the short phrase uttered by Anil, 'Be positive'.

Basant Bahar was a movie released in 1956, more than 50 years back. It has some great songs, and hence has never been forgotten. The movie starred Bharat Bhushan, Nimmi, Leela Chitnis, Kumkum, Om Prakash, and many others. The movie was directed by Raja Nawathe, and had some excellent music by Shanker Jaikishan. Lyrics are by Shailendra and Hasrat Jaipuri, and the singers for the movie are Mohammed Rafi, Manna Dey, Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle and Pandit Bhimsen Joshi. The story is about a son not following in the footsteps of his father. Gopal (Bharat Bhushan) is the son of the Raj Jyotshi of a kingdom (Chitaldurg State), and his father had always sought to have his son follow in his footsteps. Instead, Gopal begins to become a vocalist, and is fairly gifted. He also falls in love with Gopi (Nimmi), the daughter of famous singer Neela Sani; both of these facts do not go down well with his father. However, Gopal continues on his path, until one day a rival tampers with his voice. Further, there is a turn of events that estranges him from Gopi; will Gopal be ever be able to be the greatest vocalist of his generation and what will happen to his love story ?

One of the top 10 devotional songs, the song Sukh Ke Sab Saathi from the movie Gopi (1970) is a great song. Sung by Muhammed Rafi, with lyrics by Rajinder Kishan and music by Kalyandji Anandji. The song is picturised on Dilip Kumar. Gopi also stars Saira Banu, Pran, Farida Jalal, Johnny Walker, Om Prakash, and Nirupa Roy. Another great song from the movie was the song, Ramchandra Kah Gaye, that is famous even now and sung as a pure devotional song (again pictured on Dilip Kumar). Gopi (Dilip Kumar) stays in the village with his elder brother, Girdhari (Om Prakash) and their younger sister Nandini (Farida Jalal). Girdhari goes to the landlord Lala (Pran) to take money, which he had saved for Nandini's wedding but gets thrown out of the house. Gopi forcibly gets the money but is accused by the landlord of stealing. Sent out of the house by Girdhari, Gopi leaves for the city and vows to come back only after making enough money for Nandini's wedding. What happens next ? Does Gopi manage to do what he has sought to do ?

This is one of the all-time great devotional songs. The song is from a movie called Hum Dono, released in 1961. The movie is about a double role, and the confusion stemming from the conflict that gets caused when a war hero does not return home, and his lookalike is sent to break the news to his family. The movie was a hit, and had some lovely music. The movie was made under the Navketan banner, produced by Dev Anand and directed by Amarjeet. Lyrics were by Sahir Ludhianvi and music was by Jaidev. The movie starred, in addition to Dev Anand, Nanda, Sadhana, Lalita Pawar, Gajanan Jagirdar and Leela Chitnis. The movie has a young Captain Anand (Dev Anand) happy with his love Mita (Sadhna), singing love songs and being a great young couple in love. At this time, the war finally breaks out, and Captain Anand has to report to duty. In the army, he finds a lookalike in a senior position, Major Verma. The Major has a stiff moustache, and is fairly grouchy. After some initial hiccups, the Captain and the Major become friends, and soon learn a lot about each other's lives. Tragedy happens when the Major disappears in battle, and is presumed to be dead. Captain Anand is dispatched to break the news, but is totally unprepared for the situation he finds himself in. And then finally the Major returns (crippled), and is shocked to see the Captain as having taken his place.Eventually things get resolved.

Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gam (also known as K3G or KKKG) was a much awaited movie from the Karan Johar stable since it promised to bring together the 2 biggest stars of Bollywood, Amitabh Bachchan and Shahrukh Khan. In addition, the movie would also star the very infrequently seen Jaya Bachchan, and a bonus would be the hearthrob and hunk, Hrithik Roshan. Kajol and Kareena Kapoor would complete the list of all the star cast. The movie, set on the complicated relationship in a family bound by traditions, and yet caring and loving each other, was a big hit. Although it also true that there are a number of people who can't stand the movie, given that the story line is very limited, and the central theme of the movie is the distance between the father and the son due to the ego clashes between them (more due to the father not willing to bend his principles). The movie is also about the husband-wife relationship and about the expectations vs. responsibility of this relationship.
Right from the beginning, Yashovardhan Raichand (Bachhan) and wife Nandini (Jaya) have set family norms based on certain principles and family traditions that are really inflexible. Yashovardhan is the typical patriarch who runs the family, and his word is law. Nandini respects his authority, but is more believing in the love between her and her sons, and that is the abiding principle of her life. They have 2 sons, Rahul (Shah Rukh) who is adopted, and Rohan (Hrithik Roshan), who is younger to Shahrukh by 8 years. Because Rahul is adopted, he is even more dedicated to his parents and will obey every wish of theirs. Things are on track, and Yashovardhan is looking to get Rahul married to Rani Mukherjee (in a guest role) who is of a similar status and has even agreed to the match. And then disaster strikes. Shahrukh falls in love with Anjali (Kajol), a bubbly but clumsy girl from Chandni Chowk (and daughter of a local shop-keeper Anupam Kher). She for some time remains unaware of his love, but slowly realizes it. However, Yashovardhan will have none of it, and forbids this love. And this is where it would have remained had tragedy not struck in the shape of the death of Anupam Kher. Shahrukh marries Anajali, but the ego and conflict between father and son drives Shahrukh far away, to England. The father has his ego, but Nandini can only suffer and pine over the loss of her elder son. It is then that the younger son, leaning about the actual reasons for Shahrukh not being there in the house, promises to get him back. And so he sets out, finding them and making friends through Kareena (playing a girl of her age, with all the pomp and show). Eventually Kajol finds out, and then Shahrukh also finds out (when Hrithik teacher Shahrukh's son this family saying "Jab bhi tumhe kuchh pana ho, kuchh hasil karna ho to humesha apne man ki suno aur agar man se bhi koi jawab na aye to apni ankhe band karo aur apne ma-baba ka nam lo … har muskil asan ho jayegi, har manzil nazdeek lagegi aur jeet tumhari hogi."). And then the return of Shahrukh to the family home, well inspired by an act of rebellion by Nandini who tells her husband that the consequences of his actions led to grief and suffering; and eventually he realizes the love within him. The movie has plenty of emotional scenes, and the director uses them to the maximum in order to cover over a script that is not very detailed. The music is good, with some hummable and hit songs (music by Jatin-Lalit, Aadesh Shrivastava and Sandesh Shandilya; lyrics by Sameer, Choreography by Farah Khan).

That first song, in such a delightful Sufi manner, captured the attention of a huge number of people and made him a star. And now, with this new composition, he is liable to become more famous. And it seems worth it, just listen to this great work, and you will also become a fan. I have to admit, I was not so much in awe of 'Teri Diwanee' when it first came out, but it sort of grew on me, and by now, I really love this song. The video, of different situations, complements the song, but you really don't need the video to enjoy this song.
