For a couple of years now, Ra.One has been the most awaited movie in Bollywood. With the additional marketing blitz over the past few weeks, it would seem that you wherever you went, you would see something related to Ra.One; and with the product marketing tie-ups, there were many products that were related to Ra.One. The hype for the movie was incredible, and there is a sense of fear that comes when a movie is such incredibly hyped (which has been proved true for many movies in the past, the last one being Veer). I read a few reviews, asked some friends, and finally decided to take the plunge and buy a ticket (in a small group).
It's somewhat hard for me to describe how I felt, although one of my biggest indicators (looking at my watch often), indicated that the movie was not gripping enough. And, in the last couple of days, I watched some movies that were also some sort of super-hero movies, such as Robot, and Iron Man (1 and 2), it seemed to be clear that Ra.One was missing something. Which is very surprising if you look at the people and effort involved. With the backing of Shahrukh Khan, the movie was directed by Anubhav Sinha, music by Vishal-Shekhar, and with the huge budget of Rs. 175 crore letting the movie hire the best of talent from Holly wood. And yet, here are some of the negatives that really turned me off:
- The level of humour in the movie was incredibly low. What little humour there was dealt with poking fun of a Tamil accent, or of translating abuses into ones that ladies that can use, etc. I was cringing in the hall when I heard the language, and the common usage of words such as condom, main male organ, and so on.
- The film has very little action. For a movie that is styled on a super-hero, the action scenes would not be more than 15-20 minutes (or seems like that long)
- The movie has a feel of being in a video game; especially towards the end where the battle between the main characters does not really impress. Compare with the scene in Robot, and they seem better, and of course, there is no comparison between scenes in movies such as Iron Man.
- The movie displays the main Indian theme especially in the second half, where a song suddenly comes in and disrupts the entire sequence.
- The villain, supposedly endowed with superb powers, never really exhibits such powers other than the ability to deliver a strong blow (such as the one by the fireman in X-men, where energy is controlled and then thrown); further, this is a villain with only one objective, to kill the boy who last defeated him. There is no danger to the human race.
- Music is just about okay.
- Arjun Ramphal again has very little time in the film, with the cartoon character, and other guises taking up most of the appearance of the villain
- Who creates a video game with only 3 levels, and that too with only 1 gun and bullet in the 3rd stage (nobody would get hooked to such a game)
There were a few things I liked:
- Kareena did not have an action role, but otherwise she looked hot in her role
- The new kid (Armaan Khan) playing the role of the son of Shahrukh Khan was good
- Some of the interaction with the neighbor (Satish Shah) was decent
- The final train scene was good, and seemed well suited to the context of the locals in Mumbai
The story of the movie is basically the attempts of the super-hero to save the son of his creator, from another monster. So, Shahrukh works in a senior position in Barron industries, and creates video games. He is shown to be a bumbling guy, good with values and morals, and a good creator of video games. His son does not really idolise, and in fact, many times is embarrassed by the actions of his father. He is however in love with video games, and with villains. So, his father creates a new video game with the most dangerous villain, called Ra.One (the creation process of the video game shown in the movie is fairly nice), but his team soon starts to see weird things. The Artificial Intelligence given to the villain is giving the villain (inside the video game) some strange powers, and this comes out in the open when the young child Prateik (code name Lucifer) defeats Ra.One in the first level, but then abandons the game. At this, Ra.One decides to leave the game to defeat Lucifer in real life, and kills his father while doing this.
The only savior is G.One (played by Shahrukh Khan), the counterpart of Ra.One. Both of them have a brief battle where Ra.One is destroyed into several small parts, and they all flee back to India. After some sentimental scenes (sure to be a turn off for kids), Ra.One is re-created, comes to Mumbai and interrupts during the Chamak Challo sequence. A final fight sequence takes place, the movie ends. Yawn.
The struggle to remain good and maintain high morals when facing adverse situations in life can be a hard struggle; after all, there are a number of movies depicting how a criminal rose up in life because of poverty are a large number. Manoj Kumar has made a number of movies on the concept of patriotism, or on the struggle in life between the good and the bad, with this movie being an integral part of his collection. The name 'Roti Kapda aur Makaan' delineates this struggle, with the words literally translating into the following - Food, Clothes and House (Shelter), depicting the necessities of life.
The movie was a very successful movie, having struck a chord in the audience about the struggle to make ends meet and the moral problems that get associated with such struggles, becoming the most successful movie of 1974. The movie was made (produced and directed) by Manoj Kumar, and like many of his other movies, was a multi-starrer, starring Shashi Kapoor, Zeenat Aman, Amitabh Bachchan, Moushmi Chatterjee, besides Manoj Kumar in the lead role.
Some of the songs of the movie were very successful, such as "Hay Hay Yeh Majboori", "Main Na Bhoolunga", etc. The music for the movie was by Laxmikant-Pyarelal (earning him a Filmfare Award Nomination, and winning the Best Lyrics award for Santosh Anand).
The movie is about the head of a family, Bharat (Manoj Kumar) who takes on the responsibility for his family after the retirement of his father. He has 2 younger brothers Vijay (Amitabh Bachchan) and Deepak (Dheeraj Kumar), as well as a sister Champa, who is eligible to get married. However, he is not so successful, not able to find work despite having a good education. The only earning he has is through a job as a singer, but it does not pay that much; this makes his girlfriend Sheetal (Zeenat Aman) extremely frustrated, and she starts working as a secretary to a rich businessman Mohan Babu (Shashi Kapoor), who starts falling in love with her; she is seemingly more interested in his wealth.
Bharat in the meantime is going through more struggles; his efforts to become a builder end in failure when the Government takes over his building site and leaves him with grave financial problems. Sheetal also gets engaged to her boss, and then Bharat's father dies. Even when a suitor is found for his sister Champa, Bharat is unable to get the required amount of money for the marriage. What does Bharat do ? How does he resist the temptation to get into crime ?
Reshma Aur Shera was one of the earlier movies of Amitabh Bachchan, at a time when he was not the established superstar. The movie is an account of betrayal, love, murder, honour, set against the backdrop of the sands and harshness of Rajasthan. The movie was essentially the creation of Sunil Dutt, who also produced and directed the movie.
The movie was well liked by critics, and was nominated for some international (although it did not win too many). Some of the awards it was nominated for include:
- The Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival
- Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film (Oscars)
The movie was written by S. Ali Raza, with some beautiful music by Jaidev (for which he won the 1972 National Film Award for Best Music Direction (his first award for music)).
The movie is about the feud between 2 families, and in a story that has been seen many times, where the children of both families are in love. The eldest son of Sagat Singh, Shera (Sunil Dutt) is not the more violent and revenge seeking son, trying to make peace. He is very strongly attracted to the daughter Reshma (Waheeda Rehman) of his father's rival, and she also falls in love with him when she sees how he can be strong for peace rather than for more revenge.
And yet there is a third element, the younger son of Sagat Sing, the mute Chotu (Amitabh Bachchan, who plays the role of a skilled shooter, also heavily influenced by his father). Eventually Chotu goes against the wishes of his brother in terms of not having violence and going in for peace and influenced by his father who wants Chotu to shoot the rival and his son both. And they both die; this causes Shera to hunt for his own brother to kill him. What happens next ?
How many people are there who would not have heard of this movie ? Yaadon Ki Baarat is one incredible movie, full of masala, full of some great music, with a murder, and then the quest for revenge on somebody whom the children of the killed cannot even identify, and then you have the capers of a thief (who works with somebody who is actually the killer), and you have a very enjoyable movie. And when you add a delectable Zeenat Aman, you get a really incredible movie.
The movie was made by Nasir Hussain, who produced and directed the movie. The movie starred some of the bigger stars, and some of the not so large ones, with the cast comprising of Dharmendra, Zeenat Aman, Vijay Arora, Tariq, and Neetu Singh.
The movie had some great songs, with 'Chura Liya Hain Tumne' being a song that is remembered and played even now, and music was provided by RD Burman. The script for the movie was provided by the famous pair of Javed Akhtar and Salim Khan. One lesser know fact about the movie was that it starred Aamir Khan as a cute young boy (the youngest of the 3 children shown in the movie).
The movie is a classic story about siblings separated early, when they are very young, and who meet later in life (and then realize much later that they are brothers). An artist, who defies a gang, is killed by them with the young children of the couple witnessing the murder. When running away, they get separated. They all have different life styles, with the eldest becoming a skilled burglar, the second one being a normal (not wealthy) person, and the youngest one becoming a singer. All they remember is a childhood song called 'Yaadon Ki Baarat'.
They do meet up several times but cannot associate any relationship between them; and go through various relationships (with the middle one played by Vijay Arora falling in love with Zeenat Aman after pretending to be a rich man, when his secret is out, Zeenat is shocked at the deception). The main story however is that of Shankar, the eldest one, played by Dharmendra, who is trying to find the murdered of his parents, and eventually realizes that the one whom he works for is the murderer.
Damini was a movie released in 1993, styled as the movie made about a courageous woman. At that time, it was common knowledge that Rajkumar Santoshi was extremely enamored of Meenakshi Seshadri, and this movie was a show of his dedication. It was a woman oriented film, a role that Meenakshi Seshadri had literally never got in her career; and the movie turned out to be a great movie. The movie starred, besides, Meenakshi, Rishi Kapoor (as her husband who is stuck in the moral land where he has to choose between his wife and his family), Sunny Deol (as the drunkard lawyer who is impressed by Damini and recovers to fight for her), Amrish Puri (as the lawyer fighting against Damini) and Kulbhushan Kharbanda (as her father-in-law who turns against her when she starts her fight for justice). The movie had some great music by Nadeem Shravan and was produced by the combination of Aly Morani, Karim Morani and Bunty Soorma. The movie also earned Sunny Deol an award for his performance as Best Actor (Filmafare and National Award) in a supporting role. And of course, some of the dialogs in the movie that were spoken by Sunny Deol enhanced his reputation as a he-man; sample these:

The movie is about the love between Rishi Kapoor (who is the son of a wealthy family), and Damini (Meenakshi) who is from a much poorer family. Rishi sees Meenakshi giving a performance, and falls in love with her. He woos her, and finally marries her, even though his family is not happy with his choice. Things are fine, till the day of Holi when Damini sees the maid Urmi being raped on the terrace by the younger son of the family along with friends. She is shocked, and eventually decides to reveal the truth, even though it would mean jail for her brother-in-law and disgrace for the family. Rishi Kapoor is morally struck by this, since his family cannot understand why Damini would do this, and put pressure on him to get his wife to withdraw her testimony. However, Damini is not willing to withdraw, and the family (along with the lawyer Amrish Puri) get her declared as insane and committed to an asylum. In danger over there, Damini runs away and runs into a drunk and out of work lawyer, Sunny Deol, who saves her from the hoodlums who are chasing her. He is impressed by her story, and decides to fight her case, leading to several confrontations with Amrish Puri. In the end, Rishi Kapoor supports her in court, and several of the family members are convicted for the rape and for trying to subvert justice, along with Amrish Puri.

Sarkar Raj was a move that was awaited for quite some time; it came after a few clunkers for The Factory of Ram Gopal Verma such as 'Aag', 'Darling', etc. Memories of his earlier movies such as Satya, Company, Rangeela, and Sarkar (for which Sarkar Raj is the sequel) were fading out due to these recent disastrous movies that he made. All his admissions that the movies were bad, mistakes were made, etc, don't really help in lifting his reputation. So, this movie was awaited for multiple reasons: - This movie showcased the Bachchan clan; Amitabh, Abhishek, and Aishwarya (not Jaya though) - It was supposed to have the same kind of suspense, the taut and slick making that was there in the original movie Sarkar (made in 2005)
Unlike some of his other movies where the actual direction was by other people, Sarkar Raj was actually directed by Ram Gopal Verma. Other credits for the movie include script by Prashant Pandey, background score by Amar Mohile (and the background score is haunting and fast throughout the movie, although a bit loud), cinematography by Amit Roy, and action by Allan Amin. The movie takes off from where the previous movie had ended, with the Nagres (minus Kay Kay Menon) being in command of Maharashtra through their reign of force (although the way that elected politicians are seen to be humiliated by them is a bit patronising). There is the normal tussle between the ruling Chief Minister and his opponents, but both of them pay respects to Sarkar (Amitabh) and his son and heir Shankar (Abhishek). It is at this stage that a beautiful tall CEO of an energy company, Sheppard Power Plant in the form of Anita Ranjan (Aishwarya Rai) presents a plan for a power plant that will meet the future energy needs of Maharashtra. The only hitch is that the best place to setup the plant is a place called Thackerwadi, in rural Maharashtra. Sarkar is against this proposal, but his son sees this as a beneficial mechanism, and is willing to go to any lengths to move this proposal ahead. He first tries to convince the local leader and Gandhian Rao Saheb, and then convince the rest of the villagers about the advantages of this plant. However, he is in way above his head. The grandson of Rao Saheb (Somji) starts to work against the deal, and to canvass people against this deal, making the deal a tough sell. Further, the management of the power company seems to think that Gujarat is now a better deal for this plant. Abhishek does not seem to realize what he he is against, and even his power (which he hardly ever uses) is unable to prevent harm to him, his wife (Tanissha in a small role) and in the end, he cannot even prevent his own killing by a hired sharp-shooter (the shooting scene was not very good, seemed amateurish). It is only when Amitabh, taking on responsibility again, starts to unravel the mystery behind his death and to show what he is capable of (basically kills everybody involved, somewhat like Michael Corleone ordering the killing of all those against the family). And these are the weak points of the movie - If the family is so powerful and people so scared by them, how is that a massive conspiracy can get created against them (after all, in this case, there must be a large number of people who knew there was a conspiracy) without the involved fearing that the Sarkar will kill them if their involvement in the conspiracy became known. Secondly, the last 20 minutes seem like magic, where the writer wrote a twist in the story that seemed to have been manufactured out of thin air. So, the end where the last murder is shown, that emerged out of thin air, but was very chilling. Acting is okay, with some strong parts. Aishwarya did not get all that great a role (it seemed in the end that she was being projected to be the leader in any sequel), Amitabh was good in parts. This was basically Abhishek's movie, but he came across a person who was not in touch with reality, could not comprehend that he was just a pawn in a conspiracy.
Hum Hain Rahi Pyaar Ke was a delightful movie, no doubts whatsoever. A story that combined a love story with the sensitive elements of trying to bring up kids who have lost their parents was superb. The movie had some excellent performances by the lead pair of Aamir Khan and Juhi Chawla; with other noteworthy performances by Dalip Tahil, and the 3 kids (Master Sharokh, Kunal Khemu and Baby Ashrafa) turned in some great performances. The movie was released in 1993, directed by Mahesh Bhat and produced by Tahir Hussain. The movie was written by Robin Bhatt, Aamir Khan and Sujit Sen, and had music by Nadeem-Shravan; lyrics were by Sameer. It was a fairly successful hit (although the Best Actor award for the year went to Shahrukh Khan for Baazigar). What lent the story great appeal was the sensitive treatment of the behaviour of the kids, how the eldest moves towards maturity and wants to start getting treatment like an adult; how the kids understand through an example that they should treat others the same way they want to get treated, and how through love and understanding, it is possible to bond with children (even those who have had the emotional scarring of losing their parents).
The movie stars on a sombre note with Aamir Khan suddenly being responsible for the upbringing of the children of his sister (both their parents having died in an accident). They also have a small clothes factory which is currently in trouble, having run out of working capital and seemingly not in a position to meet their order committments. At such a time, in a fit of defiance, the kids go to a circus (which was promised to them, and later denied) and from there, bring home Vaijyanti (Juhi Chawla). Juhi is the daughter of a rich South Indian person, but has run away from home to avoid getting married to a musician. And so starts the fun. She hides in their home, and is soon discovered by Aamir who hires her to be the governess of the kids. She starts bringing the kids and Aamir closer to each other, and they slowly start understanding each other. In the meantime, Aamir also meets up with Maya (Navneet Nishan) who loves Aamir and is coincidentally the daughter of Seth Bignani (who essentially holds Aamir's factory in debt). In order to secure the future, Aamir agrees to marry Maya. But he has not reckoned with the fact that both Vaijyanti and he love each other, and so he breaks his engagement with Maya. Now he has very little time to meet the order, and he does so through an emotional appeal at the factory, and through some martial arts in the end (with a comical touch). A must see movie.

Imtihaan was a movie released in 1995, starring Sunny Deol, Raveena Tandon, and Saif Ali Khan. Saif was relatively young in the movie industry at that point of time, and it showed on screen (he comes across as a gangly youth, moving with energy, but still to show his renowned acting abilities that he showed in later movies). The movie was directed by Harry Baweja, and had music by Anu Malik. The movie did average business, but the songs were a big hit. The movie had one selling point, it had an element of suspense, something not always well executed. However, and maybe people who saw this movie for the first time would feel, the suspense is not always the type of suspense you see in American movies, since a lot of people in the audience were able to predict as to what would happen when the suspense breaks, and here too, the story was predictable.
The movie has some elements of romance, widow remarriage, revenge, parenting, etc thrown in. Preeti (Raveena) is a rich girl in love with her college friend Rajat (Sunny Deol), and they decide to marry even though her father opposes this relationship. However, on their honeymoon, disaster strikes when they are attacked by criminals and Rajat dies with his body not being recovered. Preeti is in shock, and her father is not able to make her feel better. However, a young singer Saif Ali Khan starts liking Preeti, and although she rebuffs him, her father encourages him. Eventually, they marry even though Raveena is still not interested, and she rebuffs him after marriage. Soon, however, his passion breaks through and she starts liking him. After some time, things start to change. Preeti apparently starts to hide things, gets phone calls, and so on, and there is enough to make Saif suspicious of her behaviour. In addition, she starts to get close to a young kid at an orphanage, and Saif starts shadowing. He soon finds out who is behind all this, and it is eventually an alive Sunny who wants his own son back (the one whom Preeti gave birth to and whom she was told was dead). And then the criminals gets involved, and eventually Sunny defeats them, at the cost of his own life.

The movie stars these main stars, Anil Kapoor & Lara Dutta, Salman Khan and Esha Deol, Fardeen Khan and Celina Jaitley, Bipasha Basu. No Entry was one of a series of movies that dealt in a comical way with marriages and adultery. These movies were of a typical adult nature, and included movies such as Masti, No Entry, etc; movies that were criticized by a number of people for some amount of crudeness as well as depicting adult relationships in a casual manner. However, they were successful to some degree, with No Entry being a good hit. No Entry was a bit leff crude than the others, and the skin show was a bit toned down - the girls wore short clothes, but these were depicted as their normal clothes, there was a lower amount of man-girl close contact shown in the movie. The movie was directed by Anees Bazmee and produced by Boney Kapoor. Music is by Anu Malik.
No Entry deals with these 3 friends and the girls in their lives - Anil Kapoor is a journalist married to a very suspicious Lara Dutta who forever suspects him of having a relationship with other girls and he is constantly having to defend himself. Fardeen Khan is the unmarried photographer who works for Anil Kapoor, and together they make a team that takes exposes of important figures and shows them in the newspaper. He meets Celina Jaitely by accident (she miscontrues some of his actions in terms of him trying to commit suicide and tries to save him, and he is unable to understand what she is trying to do), in the process, they fall in love. Salman Khan (I did not understand what he did for a business) used to have lots of dalliances with girls while his wife Esha Deol understands him to be an ideal husband. Introduce the club dancer and call girl Bipasha Basu to this whole scene, and you end up with complications. Both Anil Kapoor and Fardeen Khan do not believe in having a relationship outside their marriage, and once threatened Salman Khan with exposure (even though he is a good friend of theirs). Salman Khan then promised that he would take revenge, and he offers Bipasha the sum of Rs. 2 lakhs if she could tempt Anil Kapoor to stray; and she gets on the job. And this is when things heat up. Bipasha goes out with Anil to a mall, where Lara Dutta also turns up and leads to a tough time for Anil since he has to avoid being seen by Lara (including getting his office phone forwarded to his mobile number). Things heat up further when Anil is caught up with Bipasha, and to save himself, he has to get her to be seen as Fardeen's girlfriend, something that causes complications when Fardeen gets closer to Celina (since now Lara believes that Fardeen is involved with Bipasha and cannot understand why he is getting involved with Celina). Things heat up further to the extent that both Fardeen and Anil look to Salman for help, and that is when things turn troublesome for Salman as well since his wife hears his boasting about his escapades and his 'trusting' wife. Eventually, things turn out well after a lot of tension. Bipasha is into all this since she needs money for her ailing husband, and the three guys are accepted back by their wives after a final episode involving a cliff, a rope and a snake, with all 3 hanging over the cliff. Overall, the movie can be watched at least once. One of the better known short sayings from this movie was the short phrase uttered by Anil, 'Be positive'.

A typical masala movie of the 90's, the movie was pretty successful. It had all the elements of a masala movie, something that would make it a full family entertainer, as well as a movie to wow the front-benchers. There was intrigue, deceit, romance, action, good songs, skin display, a leading hero in a double role, the top diva of that time (Madhuri Dixit), as well as the happy ending where all the bad people meet their just ends. The movie was made by Rakesh Roshan, with music by Rajesh Roshan and lyrics by Indeevar. The movie is of the village rich man (Shreeram Lagoo) who gets twins, but one of them is stolen and he does not even know about this; what gives him a lot of grief at that time is that his loving wife dies in child-birth. Typically for a rich man, he soon falls in the trap of getting a new wife who will also take care of the infant like a real mother; unforunately what he ends up with is the evil (in the beginning, loving) Bindu along with her real evil brother Amrish Puri. She has (from another person) a son Mahesh (Dalip Tahil), and soon starts to show her true self when both she and her brother cause Dr. Sreeram Lagoo to be really sick. This is when they realize that her husband has made his will in a way that all the money will go to the first son's wife's control when the son turns 25. They realize that they need to keep the father and son alive, but in control, and as a result, the son, Anil Kapoor is always kept subjugated, beaten up and weak. He grows up in fear of his step-brother, uncle and mother and is beaten up at the slightest provocation. On the other hand, the stolen brother, the other Anil Kapoor grows up in the city as a fearless movie black-marketeer, unafraid of anybody. He soon meets up with Madhuri Dixit, and they both fall in love. But, since this is a double role movie of brothers, it is inevitable that they will soon meet, and one of the things that will help them do this is a connection between them - they can feel each other and if one of them is pushed or hurt, then the other feels this. Anil Kapoor falls in love with a local girl played by the young Shilpa Shirodkar, who is mesmerized by his flute playing (incidentally, Shlipa also gives a waterfall drenched sari shot in this movie, something that was controversial). This relationship is accepted by his uncle and mother since they believe that his girl is a docile village girl and will do as they wish, and this seems to be the case. The next movement in this movie happens when the two Anil Kapoors get switched, and the people on both sides are astounded. The family in the village, facing a docile Kishen for all his life, suddenly meet an aggressive Kanhaiya who turns the tables and forces his tormentors to instead submit to him. On the other side, Madhuri Dixit in the town cannot understand this Kishen whom she meets and wonders what happened to her boyfriend ? Things move to a complex, when in the village, they realize that a switch has happened and are able to get hold of the original and want to quickly get all the property in their name. But, in a fight, eventually, both the brothers are re-united, and defeat all the evil doers, get re-united with their loved one, and the movie ends on a happy note.
Taare Zameen Par is a delightful movie. At the same time Shahrukh Khan was coming out with a hit nonsense Om Shanti Om, Aamir Khan came out with this gem of a movie that was a heart-shaker. At first release, a lot of people saw this as a serious movie, about the passion of a person for making the type of movie that he believes in; and the first reaction was the worry about whether this movie was a success. That got answered soon, the movie was a big success; families who went to see the movie had only good things to say for it, and the movie gained tremendous word of mouth publicity. You could hardly find anybody being critical of this movie, given the tremendous performances by the young actor, by the actress playing his mother, and by Aamir (and how often do you see a star not even appearing on the screen till the interval ?).
The movie has a fairly simple story line, and is well handled by the combination of a good story by Amole Gupte (who was almost the Director before Aamir took it away), great music by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy (Ehsaan Noorani, Loy Mendonca, Shankar Mahadevan), and lyrics by Prasoon Joshi. The music lends a great amount of support to the movie, with the 'Meri Maa' song having moved many people to express themselves emotionally. From this point on, as you read on, the story will become apparent, and if you want to retain the suspense of the movie plot, please stop reading. The story is about this 8 year old boy Ishaan Awasthi [Darsheel Safary in an incredible prize-winning performance]. He lives in a world of his own, something that his normal middle-class parents can't understand. They are more interested in things that a kid in a competitive environment should be good in - class, homework, studies; and can't understand why Ishaan is not good in all these - they cannot connect to his interests, his hobbies, etc. They cannot connect to his colors, his fascination for different things. Eventually, they decide to send him to a boarding school, something that makes him more quiet, more withdrawn. Eventually, after half-time comes in a new teacher, Ram Shankar Nikumbh [Aamir Khan], responsible for art classes. He is like a breath of fresh air, and creates a new sense of joy and optimism, infecting all the students with optimism except for Ishaan. He gets more interested in figuring out why Ishaan is so unhappy, and even travels to Mumbai to meet Ishaan's parents; he explains about the differences between different children and makes them understand. He finally gets Ishaan to break through in the final art competition. Overall, the movie is a touching tale of children. The portrayals of the other characters is also very good and contributes - Tisca Chopra as Ishaan's mother gives a great performance, Tanay Cheda [as Ishaan's friend Rajan Damodaran] gives a good performance, Vipin Sharma [Ishaan's father] portrays a middle class father in a pretty good way.
