For a couple of years now, Ra.One has been the most awaited movie in Bollywood. With the additional marketing blitz over the past few weeks, it would seem that you wherever you went, you would see something related to Ra.One; and with the product marketing tie-ups, there were many products that were related to Ra.One. The hype for the movie was incredible, and there is a sense of fear that comes when a movie is such incredibly hyped (which has been proved true for many movies in the past, the last one being Veer). I read a few reviews, asked some friends, and finally decided to take the plunge and buy a ticket (in a small group).
It's somewhat hard for me to describe how I felt, although one of my biggest indicators (looking at my watch often), indicated that the movie was not gripping enough. And, in the last couple of days, I watched some movies that were also some sort of super-hero movies, such as Robot, and Iron Man (1 and 2), it seemed to be clear that Ra.One was missing something. Which is very surprising if you look at the people and effort involved. With the backing of Shahrukh Khan, the movie was directed by Anubhav Sinha, music by Vishal-Shekhar, and with the huge budget of Rs. 175 crore letting the movie hire the best of talent from Holly wood. And yet, here are some of the negatives that really turned me off:
- The level of humour in the movie was incredibly low. What little humour there was dealt with poking fun of a Tamil accent, or of translating abuses into ones that ladies that can use, etc. I was cringing in the hall when I heard the language, and the common usage of words such as condom, main male organ, and so on.
- The film has very little action. For a movie that is styled on a super-hero, the action scenes would not be more than 15-20 minutes (or seems like that long)
- The movie has a feel of being in a video game; especially towards the end where the battle between the main characters does not really impress. Compare with the scene in Robot, and they seem better, and of course, there is no comparison between scenes in movies such as Iron Man.
- The movie displays the main Indian theme especially in the second half, where a song suddenly comes in and disrupts the entire sequence.
- The villain, supposedly endowed with superb powers, never really exhibits such powers other than the ability to deliver a strong blow (such as the one by the fireman in X-men, where energy is controlled and then thrown); further, this is a villain with only one objective, to kill the boy who last defeated him. There is no danger to the human race.
- Music is just about okay.
- Arjun Ramphal again has very little time in the film, with the cartoon character, and other guises taking up most of the appearance of the villain
- Who creates a video game with only 3 levels, and that too with only 1 gun and bullet in the 3rd stage (nobody would get hooked to such a game)
There were a few things I liked:
- Kareena did not have an action role, but otherwise she looked hot in her role
- The new kid (Armaan Khan) playing the role of the son of Shahrukh Khan was good
- Some of the interaction with the neighbor (Satish Shah) was decent
- The final train scene was good, and seemed well suited to the context of the locals in Mumbai
The story of the movie is basically the attempts of the super-hero to save the son of his creator, from another monster. So, Shahrukh works in a senior position in Barron industries, and creates video games. He is shown to be a bumbling guy, good with values and morals, and a good creator of video games. His son does not really idolise, and in fact, many times is embarrassed by the actions of his father. He is however in love with video games, and with villains. So, his father creates a new video game with the most dangerous villain, called Ra.One (the creation process of the video game shown in the movie is fairly nice), but his team soon starts to see weird things. The Artificial Intelligence given to the villain is giving the villain (inside the video game) some strange powers, and this comes out in the open when the young child Prateik (code name Lucifer) defeats Ra.One in the first level, but then abandons the game. At this, Ra.One decides to leave the game to defeat Lucifer in real life, and kills his father while doing this.
The only savior is G.One (played by Shahrukh Khan), the counterpart of Ra.One. Both of them have a brief battle where Ra.One is destroyed into several small parts, and they all flee back to India. After some sentimental scenes (sure to be a turn off for kids), Ra.One is re-created, comes to Mumbai and interrupts during the Chamak Challo sequence. A final fight sequence takes place, the movie ends. Yawn.

Hera Pheri (released in 1976) - starring Amitabh Bachchan, Vinod Khanna, and Saira Banu
Amitabh Bachchan and Vinod Khanna acted in a number of movies (a total of 6 movies) together in the 1970's, with Hera Pheri being one of them (Amar Akbar Anthony was the most famous of these). Hera Pheri was directed by Prakash Mehra, and starred Amitabh Bachchan, Vinod Khanna, Saira Banu, Sulakshana Pandit, Shreeram Lagoo and Asrani. The movie had one nomination for the Filmfare Award, with Vinod Khanna being nominated for Best Supporting Actor (although he did not win). The movie had some popular music by the music director duo of Kalyanji-Anandji, and the movie script was written by Satish Bhatnagar and Vijay Kaul.
The movie was popular, although it can get complicated. Like many other movies of that period, it showcases the hero (or heroes) as criminals, but good-hearted criminals. They are not terrorists, they don't go around shooting people with guns or something, but they steal jewelery from rich people, or they steal from rich houses, and so on.
Buy movie from Flipkart | Buy from Amazon |
The story of this movie is based on the relationship between 2 friends, Ajay (Vinod Khanna) and vijay (a person by the name of Vijay cannot be anybody other than Amitabh Bachchan). Vijay saves Ajay when Ajay is going to jump in front of a train, and ever since then, they became the best of friends. Ajay was sold by his father to get money for his mother's illness, and then his foster parents died, so Ajay was rendered homeless; Vijay on the other hand is troubled by the story of his parents. His father was killed, and it was on that night that his mother turned mad, and he is looking for how to cure her (maybe getting the murderer would help in doing that).
The twist in the story is that the person who killed Vijay's father is actually Ajay's long lost father (the one who sold him away and now seeks him desperately, as much as he seeks to kill Vijay's mother (she witnessed the murder of her husband and is a witness)). In order to get medication for his mom, Vijay plays a con man who, along with Ajay, cons people to earn money. When Ajay finally finds his father, he changes sides and goes to his father, leaving Vijay. What happens next ?

Sholay (1975) - One of the greatest Indian movie hits of all time
When you think of great Hindi movies, one of the names that always comes to the front is the movie called Sholay, released in 1975. The movie seems like it was set in another age, it being now 35 years since it was released and became a huge hit; and is now a cult movie. If it comes on TV even now, you can be sure that there will be some people who will want to watch. And the movie created a set of characters who became incredibly famous, specifically the few characters of Gabbar (Amjad Khan), Thakur (Sanjeev Kumar), Jai (Amitabh Bachchan), Veeru (Dharmendra), and Basanti (Hema Malini), and the under-played role of Radha (played by Jaya Bachchan).
The movie took a chance, starring a newcomer in the pivotal role of the dacoit leader (Danny was the original choice, but he was unavailable, and hence a newcomer such as Amjad Khan was selected). The movie was based on a small idea by the prolific writer duo of Salim-Javed. And the outcome was a movie that broke all records, and became a cult movie known till today.
The movie was produced by G.P. Sippy and directed by his son Ramesh Sippy. Music for the film was given by RD Burman, with the lyrics provided by Anand Bakshi. During direction, the movie went over-budget, since the director wanted to be perfect in the shooting, and many of the shots took many takes and many days. The movie also had real-life relations between the stars, with Amitabh and Jaya getting married 4 months before shooting of the movie started, and Dharmendra romancing Hema Malini at that time. The movie took a period of 2.5 years to make. The movie also had an effect on tourism, with the location of Ramanagaram (a rocky terrain), a village near Bangalore, Karnataka being the shooting site, and being known later as the location where Sholay was shot.
The movie was based on the concept of revenge, where a local dacoit terrorises the village, and also takes revenge on the family of the local thakur. The Thakur in turn hires 2 small-time but brave crooks to come in to fight the dacoit and his gang, and this is what they do, but with some sadness, as one of the 2 loses his life in the end.
The movie takes these 2 small time crooks (Jai and Veeru) in a jail. They are remembered by an ex-policeman, the Thakur, when he is looking for somebody who can help him fight the dacoits (led by Gabbar). He had apprehended them, and then see how brave they were when they fought off dacoits who were trying to rob a train. He meets them, and offers them a large amount of money if they can get rid of Gabbar and his gang. Gabbar is a violent and brutal dacoit leader who is terrorising the villages.
In the first confrontation, three men from Gabbar's gang come to get supplies from the villagers, something that they do without any issue in the past. Now, however, they face a fight from Jai and Veeru and have to go back without any supplies; at which Gabbar cannot stand the sight of his men being humiliated in front of the village and shoots them after some drama (in a scene that was much appreciated). The next major attack is on Holi, during which Jai and Veeru are pinned down and are looking for Thakur to throw a gun towards them, but he does not cooperate. Later his story is revealed, where he had arrested Gabbar some time back, and then Gabbar killed all his family except for one daughter-in-law Radha (Jaya Bhaduri). And in another confrontation, Gabbar cut off both his hands leaving him without any hands.
So, the situation continues, with Jai and Veeru staying in the village, and getting fond of Radha and Basanti respectively. Gabbar has cut off the village from the outside, but they fight back by killing some of his men. And then the final confrontation, where the fight with Gabbar and his men take place, in which Jai finally dies.
Some interesting scenes from the movie:
Where Jai talks to Basanti's mausi and turns her against Veeru, and Veeru on the water tank:
Scene from the jail early in the movie with Asrani:

Bombay to Goa (1972) - starring Amitabh Bachchan, Shatrughan Sinha, Aruna Irani and Mehmood, with some good music
Bombay to Goa is one of the earlier movies of Amitabh Bachchan, and hence, at those times, there were roles that were not written solely for him, but since he was a young and upcoming actor, the movie did showcase him; with the movie "Bombay to Goa" being meant to launch the brother of Mehmood, Anwar Ali, and also showcase the talent of Amitabh Bachchan.
The movie is mostly about a bus journey, taken by a young girl where she is seeking to escape the clutches of a man looking to kill her (he has already taken money from her and also killed his own partner for the same money). The bus journey provides her (and the viewers) with a lot of adventure, and also makes her more mature.
The movie was produced by NC Sippy and directed by S. Ramanathan; and stars Amitabh Bachchan, Shatrughan Sinha, Aruna Irani and Mehmood. The music for the movie was given by R.D.Burman.
Mala's picture appears in a magazine, submitted by 2 friends of Mala (Sharma (Shatrughan Sinha), and Verma (Manmohan)); however her parents are very surprised and astonished to see these photos, and plan to marry her off to the son of their friend. However, Mala is certainly not ready to marry somebody whom she does not know and dreams of a film career. She does not understand the attitude of her parents, takes a lot of money from her parents without their knowing, and runs away from home.
She hands the money over to Sharma and Verma; and seeing this much money, their intention changes and they fight among themselves for the money, with Sharma killing Verma. Mala sees this, and is now running for her life from Sharma and tries to escape on a bus that is on the way to Goa. However, Sharma soon finds her and then enters Ravikumar (Amitabh Bachchan) who wants to save Mala. Eventually Mala starts to trust Ravikumar. The movie becomes very interesting due to the various assorted passengers on the bus, representing a cross section of people from all over India, with Mehmood playing the role of the conductor of the bus, and his brother, Anwar Ali, playing the driver Rajesh.

Reshma Aur Shera (released in 1971) - starring Sunil Dutt, Amitabh Bachchan, Waheeda Rehman, Raakhee
Reshma Aur Shera was one of the earlier movies of Amitabh Bachchan, at a time when he was not the established superstar. The movie is an account of betrayal, love, murder, honour, set against the backdrop of the sands and harshness of Rajasthan. The movie was essentially the creation of Sunil Dutt, who also produced and directed the movie.
The movie was well liked by critics, and was nominated for some international (although it did not win too many). Some of the awards it was nominated for include:
- The Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival
- Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film (Oscars)
The movie was written by S. Ali Raza, with some beautiful music by Jaidev (for which he won the 1972 National Film Award for Best Music Direction (his first award for music)).
The movie is about the feud between 2 families, and in a story that has been seen many times, where the children of both families are in love. The eldest son of Sagat Singh, Shera (Sunil Dutt) is not the more violent and revenge seeking son, trying to make peace. He is very strongly attracted to the daughter Reshma (Waheeda Rehman) of his father's rival, and she also falls in love with him when she sees how he can be strong for peace rather than for more revenge.
And yet there is a third element, the younger son of Sagat Sing, the mute Chotu (Amitabh Bachchan, who plays the role of a skilled shooter, also heavily influenced by his father). Eventually Chotu goes against the wishes of his brother in terms of not having violence and going in for peace and influenced by his father who wants Chotu to shoot the rival and his son both. And they both die; this causes Shera to hunt for his own brother to kill him. What happens next ?

Yaadon Ki Baarat (1973) - A story of revenge, with some incredible songs, starring Dharmendra and Zeenat Aman
How many people are there who would not have heard of this movie ? Yaadon Ki Baarat is one incredible movie, full of masala, full of some great music, with a murder, and then the quest for revenge on somebody whom the children of the killed cannot even identify, and then you have the capers of a thief (who works with somebody who is actually the killer), and you have a very enjoyable movie. And when you add a delectable Zeenat Aman, you get a really incredible movie.
The movie was made by Nasir Hussain, who produced and directed the movie. The movie starred some of the bigger stars, and some of the not so large ones, with the cast comprising of Dharmendra, Zeenat Aman, Vijay Arora, Tariq, and Neetu Singh.
The movie had some great songs, with 'Chura Liya Hain Tumne' being a song that is remembered and played even now, and music was provided by RD Burman. The script for the movie was provided by the famous pair of Javed Akhtar and Salim Khan. One lesser know fact about the movie was that it starred Aamir Khan as a cute young boy (the youngest of the 3 children shown in the movie).
The movie is a classic story about siblings separated early, when they are very young, and who meet later in life (and then realize much later that they are brothers). An artist, who defies a gang, is killed by them with the young children of the couple witnessing the murder. When running away, they get separated. They all have different life styles, with the eldest becoming a skilled burglar, the second one being a normal (not wealthy) person, and the youngest one becoming a singer. All they remember is a childhood song called 'Yaadon Ki Baarat'.
They do meet up several times but cannot associate any relationship between them; and go through various relationships (with the middle one played by Vijay Arora falling in love with Zeenat Aman after pretending to be a rich man, when his secret is out, Zeenat is shocked at the deception). The main story however is that of Shankar, the eldest one, played by Dharmendra, who is trying to find the murdered of his parents, and eventually realizes that the one whom he works for is the murderer.

Dus - Fast paced action
Dus is a fast-paced action thriller starring a number of Bollywood stars Sanjay Dutt, Sunil Shetty, Abhishek Bachchan, Shilpa Shetty, Pankaj Kapoor, Esha Deol and Zayed Khan. The movie was released in 2005, and was a decent hit (costing around Rs. 20 crore, and earned a revenue of Rs. 43 crore). The movie was directed by Anubhav Sinha, with production by Nitin Manmohan and Sohail Maklai. Music was by Vishal-Shekhar, and Ranjit Barot. The movie was fairly long, being around 2 hours & 20 minutes. Music for the film became quite popular, and the title song of 'Dus Bahane' was a hit. The movie also had a twist, in that one of the popular heroes was sacrificed at the climax of the movie, something that a lot of movies avoid.
The movie is about the effort of the Anti Terrorist Cell (working somewhat similar to what you would expect the RAW to function, but without all the glamour that the movie depicts) to stop a massive bombing of which it does not have much information, and for which there are only 10 days left. Sanjay Dutt is the head of this organization, with the name of Siddhant Dheer. Along with him, his younger brother Shashank Dheer (Abhishek Bachchan), Aditya Singh (Zayed Khan), Aditi Kumar (Shilpa Shetty) are the others in the organization. Neha (Esha Deol) is an agent in Canada who starts the entire process, by reporting the existence of a plan being spear-headed by Jambwal, about whom they do not have any information, and whose identity they do not know.
The movie attempts to play the game of multiple double-crossing, about people betraying each other, about people not being who they claim to be. Because the ATS does not know the identity of Jambwal, they cannot even confirm that if they catch a person, whether that person is Jambwal or not. And this happens when they catch Mehendi (Pankaj Kapoor), an agent of Jambwal who is terrified of Jambwal. They are trying to interrogate him to find out more Jambwal, but they land in more problems. The car provided to them by Neha is rigged to explode if it slows down (English movie Speed?), so who is Neha. Zayed Khan is a bomb expert who can detect if a bomb is planted, and what are the chances of defusing it in time.
They are further trying to not reveal their plan to the Canadian police, even though the plan involves the terrorists bombing a stadium where a match is ongoing, so as to attack the Indian Prime Minister who will be there to attend the match (on May 10th). They uncover traitors in their midst, although each of these traitors extract a cost. The action peaks in the end, as they are at the stadium where there are multiple bombs planted, and their mission is to get the bombs away without loss of life (with the bombs being constructed of C4, a military explosive (where did terrorists get C4 from?)). The movie is a much watchable movie, be sure to watch (although the logic can sometimes fail).

Here Now Here Now, Everybody Put Your Hands Up In The Air Now
Here Now Here Now Everybody Put Your Hands Up In The Air
Uski Aankhon Mein Baatein, Baaton Mein Jadoo
( Say Here Now Here Now )-2

Dus Bahane Karke Legaye Dil )-2
Here Now Here Now, Everybody Put Your Hands Up In The Air Now
Here Now Here Now Everybody Put Your Hands Up In The Air
Yeh Dil Topehle Aisa Nahin Tha
Kisne Behkaya Aisa Sapna Dikhaya Kyun
Yeh Aankhein Meri Dekhe Ussi Ko
Soche Bina Hi Usse Apna Banaya Kyun
Jeena To Marne Se Ab Hai Kahi Mushkil
Khudko Jo Khoya To Woh Hogaya Haasil
( Dus Bahane Karke Legaye Dil Legaye Dil
Dus Bahane Karke Legaye Dil )-2
Here Now Here Now, Everybody Put Your Hands Up In The Air Now
Here Now Here Now Everybody Put Your Hands Up In The Air
Kisne Kisiko Haske Bulaya
Baatein Banake Koi Jadooo Sa Chalaya Tha
Bas Dekha Dekhi Dil Se Hui Thi
Duniya Bhulake Koi Aaise Dil Pe Chaya Tha
Kiske Bin Kya Hoga Yeh Kh Sake Na Dil
Khudko Yeh Samjhana Ab Ho Gaya Mushkil
( Dus Bahane Karke Legaye Dil Legaye Dil

Dhoom 2 (2006): More action, and equal success
Dhoom 2 was released in 2006, as a much awaited sequel after the success of Dhoom (2004). The movie was directed by Sanjay Gadhvi (who had earlier directed Tere Liye (2000), Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi Hai (2002), and Dhoom (2004)), and after the success of Dhoom, he was the natural choice for shooting this movie as well. The movie had a tough initial act to catch, since the original Dhoom had fast paced action in terms of bike action, as well as the glamour quotient. So, in Dhoom 2, they had to improve on both the glam as well as on the action scenes - so you had Aishwarya Rai and Bipasha Basu as the hot female leads along with Abhishek Bachchan, Hrithik Roshan, and Uday Chopra; the action was also accelerated with cliff shots, landing on a train, and numerous other action sequences.
The movie was also a bit controversial since a kiss scene between Aishwarya and Hrithik was removed, since Aishwarya was becoming a part of the Bachchan household. Besides this however, there were some specialties in the movie, with more focus on the dashing villain, Hrithik rather than on Abhishek (there was speculation on why Abhishek settled for a much lower role). The movie had some great songs by Pritam, with lyrics by Sameer.
The movie follows the same track as the earlier Dhoom, with the police inspector chasing a thief who seems to disappear into thin air, and keeps on cocking a snook at the police. In this movie, the thief is played by a Mr. A (Hrithik Roshan) as he is in the habit of leaving a 'A' symbol after each robbery. There is a great action scene where he steals a beautiful English crown by sky diving onto a train that is in the Namibian desert. As usual, he is pursued by ACP Jai Dixit, who is accompanied by his Sub Inspector Ali Akbar (Uday Chopra), and by his former classmate ACP Shonali Bose (Bipasha Basu).
And then there is the entry of Sunheri (Aishwarya Rai), who wants to get close to Mr. A as his fan, but who is actually working for the police. Mr. A trains her, and takes her along for another robbery in Brazil, but there Hrithik discovers that Sunheri is working against him, and threatens her. She is in love with him by that time, and ends up turning over to his side. In the end, even though their robbery is a success, they are not able to escape, and in a daring cliff confrontation, there is a staged death of Mr. A. In the end, they show Mr. A and Sunheri together in a restaurant, where ACP Jai also walks in.
Videos of songs from the Movie, Dhoom 2
Crazy Kiya Rai (Aishwarya is hot) (sung by Sunidhi Chauhan)

My name is Ali (Sung by Sonu Nigam, Bipasha Basu)
Touch me (Sung by K K, Alisha Chinoy)
Dhoom again (Sung by Vishal Dadlani, Dominique Cerejo)
Kiss between Hrithik and Aishwarya Rai in Dhoom 2 (censored later)
Lyrics of songs from the movie:
Crazy Kiya Re
chori chori kiyaa re, dil ye dil liyaa re - 2
jaadu se jaadu kiyaa……kiyaa re
jaagi soyi rahoon, khoyi khoyi rahoon,
uski yaadon mein, uske khwaabon mein
jhoome jiyaa re………crazy kiyaa re
naa usko pataa, naa uski khataa
main uspe mar gayi, zaraa usko bataa,
dheere dheere ikraar mein,
kabhi kabhi intezaar mein ,
uske hi pyaar mein………jhoome jiyaa re…crazy kiyaa re
main yahaan bhi gayi, main wahaan bhi gayi,
sochaa pal pal use, main jahaan bhi gayi
din ho yaa raat ho

Damini (1993): Honesty requires a lot of courage
Damini was a movie released in 1993, styled as the movie made about a courageous woman. At that time, it was common knowledge that Rajkumar Santoshi was extremely enamored of Meenakshi Seshadri, and this movie was a show of his dedication. It was a woman oriented film, a role that Meenakshi Seshadri had literally never got in her career; and the movie turned out to be a great movie. The movie starred, besides, Meenakshi, Rishi Kapoor (as her husband who is stuck in the moral land where he has to choose between his wife and his family), Sunny Deol (as the drunkard lawyer who is impressed by Damini and recovers to fight for her), Amrish Puri (as the lawyer fighting against Damini) and Kulbhushan Kharbanda (as her father-in-law who turns against her when she starts her fight for justice).
The movie had some great music by Nadeem Shravan and was produced by the combination of Aly Morani, Karim Morani and Bunty Soorma. The movie also earned Sunny Deol an award for his performance as Best Actor (Filmafare and National Award) in a supporting role. And of course, some of the dialogs in the movie that were spoken by Sunny Deol enhanced his reputation as a he-man; sample these:
* "Yeh Dhai kilo ka haath jab kisi pe padta hai na aadmi uthta nai uth jata hai.."
* "Tum kabhi chidiyaghar gaye ho pinjare mein band sher pe bache bhi mungfalian faenkte hai khuli zameen par sher ka saamna karoge to mard hone ki galatfahmi door ho jayegi "
* "tareeqh per thareeqh ..tareeqh per tareeqh..tareeqh per tareeqh..milti hai to sirf tareeqh"
* "judge order order kahta rahega aur tum pitte rahoge"
The movie is about the love between Rishi Kapoor (who is the son of a wealthy family), and Damini (Meenakshi) who is from a much poorer family. Rishi sees Meenakshi giving a performance, and falls in love with her. He woos her, and finally marries her, even though his family is not happy with his choice. Things are fine, till the day of Holi when Damini sees the maid Urmi being raped on the terrace by the younger son of the family along with friends. She is shocked, and eventually decides to reveal the truth, even though it would mean jail for her brother-in-law and disgrace for the family.
Rishi Kapoor is morally struck by this, since his family cannot understand why Damini would do this, and put pressure on him to get his wife to withdraw her testimony. However, Damini is not willing to withdraw, and the family (along with the lawyer Amrish Puri) get her declared as insane and committed to an asylum. In danger over there, Damini runs away and runs into a drunk and out of work lawyer, Sunny Deol, who saves her from the hoodlums who are chasing her. He is impressed by her story, and decides to fight her case, leading to several confrontations with Amrish Puri. In the end, Rishi Kapoor supports her in court, and several of the family members are convicted for the rape and for trying to subvert justice, along with Amrish Puri.

Dhoom (2004) - the action thriller
Indian movies had seldom seen movies like these - a high voltage running chase between some smart thieves and a great policeman who pursues them to the bitter end. If a movie can be scripted and directed to be slick, it can be fairly impressive, and Dhoom was that. Don't expect any great script, any major story or message, but if you want an action flick that is fast and furious, then this is a movie certainly worth watching. Obviously, none of the characters of the movie are known for their excellent emoting abilities, but then they were not expected to do so. So, throw in some great action sequences, skin show, and fast songs, and you can have a movie that is bound to be a hit, and so Dhoom was (one measure of a movie being a hit is that there is a sequel soon, and so Dhoom2 came out just 2 years later).
The movie was produced by Aditya Chopra (Yash Raj films being the banner), and directed by Sanjay Gadhvi. The music was by Pritam, lyrics by Sameer, with the story being penned by Vijay Krishna Acharya. The movie won a few awards, with John Abraham winning awards for the negative role (although to give John an acting award takes some courage)
# 2005: IIFA Best Villain Award - John Abraham
# 2005: Zee Cine Award for Best Actor in a Negative Role - Johan Abraham
The movie is about the cat and mouse battle between the gang led by John Abraham, who start stealing from banks, without leaving traces for the police to investigate (and catch them). They use high powered bikes to evade the police when required, and make their getaways in a trace. They also lead a normal life as employees of a pizza outlet, and try to make their life as normal as possible (a good scene in the movie is when John Abraham throws the new flashy car of a gang member off a cliff as it would call attention to sudden riches).
Enter the ACP Jai Dixit (Abhishek Bachchan), married to Sweetie (Rimmii Sen). He has a mission to run these thieves down, and towards this purpose, recruits a racer and bike mechanic Ali (Uday Chopra). Ali has a girlfriend Sheena (Esha Deol in a major skin showing role that made her into a glamour doll), but unknown to him, she is also a member of Abraham's gang. Jai has, at the same time, managed to get Ali into the gang as his spy, so that he can eventually track them down and catch them. Does he suceed in the end ? What happens to Ali ? Watch the movie (either on TV whenever it appears, or on DVD) and get a thrill.

Lakshaya - good, but failed to work
War movies typically try to raise the jingoistic pitch, pushing the envelopes of patriotism, sacrifice, dedication, and lots of grunting, screaming, and similar behavior. A typical example is Border which showed determination, courage, sacrifice, death, honor, etc. Lakshya was a bit off from this track, trying to combine the story of the development into maturity of a young rudderless route when exposed to the harsh environment of a war. In that sense, it was different from the other war movies.
The movie was a perfect opportunity for the lead star, Hrithik Roshan, to showcase his histrionic skills; he was there right from the first frame to right at the end, where his individual triumph is showcased. The other actors in the movie were Preity Zinta, Amitabh Bachchan, Om Puri and Boman Irani (although it was only Preity Zinta who got a role almost the same size as that of Hrithik). The movie was based on the Kargil war of 1999, and depicts the effort by Lieutenant (later Acting Captain) Karan Shergill to capture a critical peak and keep the honor of his Brigade. The movie was directed by Farhan Akhtar, with the story by Javed Akhtar, and music by Shankaar-Ehsaan-Loy.
The movie made some good watching. You had this guy, wandering around aimless in life, with his dad wondering when he will do something in life. Some of his friends were similarly aimless, although his girlfriend Romi (Preity Zinta) was more caring about causes, and a career for her in journalism seemed to be a likely next step. In this carefree mood, he decides to try out for the army, and actually gets selected to the astonishment of his parents. However, he cannot stand the discipline of the NDA, and jumps from there.
His parents expected this, but Romi is disgusted with him, and leaves him. He is shaken at this, and this turns him into a dedicated person. He returns to the academy, takes his punishment and graduates into a good soldier, and officer. And then he gets involved with the Kargil conflict as part of his brigade, and then meets Romi again over there. Romi's character was apparently styled on Barkha Dutt, is covering the conflict as a TV reporter. They meet, when Romi is now engaged to somebody else, and Hrithik and his brigade have to break the Pakistani stranglehood on a critical peak, and the way to do that is very challenging.

Title Song:
Haan yehi rasta hai tera, tune ab jaana hai
Haan yehi rasta hai tera, tune ab jaana hai
Haan yehi sapna hai tera, tune pehchaana hai
Haan yehi rasta hai tera, tune ab jaana hai
Haan yehi sapna hai tera, tune pehchaana hai
Tujhe ab ye dikhaana hai
Roke tujhko aandhiyaan, ya zameen aur aasmaan
Paayega jo lakshya hai tera
Lakshya toh har haal mein paana hai
Mushkil koyi, aajaaye toh, parbat koyi, takraaye toh
Taaqat koyi, dikhlaaye toh, toofaan koyi, mandlaaye toh
Mushkil koyi aajaaye toh, parbat koyi takraaye toh
Barse chaahe ambar se aag, lipte chaahe pairon se laakh -2
Paayega jo lakshya hai tera
Lakshya toh har haal mein paana hai
Himmat se jo koyi chale, dharti hille qadmon tale
Kya dooriyaan kya faasle, manzil lage aake gale
Himmat se jo koyi chale, dharti hille qadmon tale
Tu chal yunhi ab sub-o-shaam, rukna, jhukna nahin tera kaam -2
Paayega jo lakshya hai tera
Lakshya toh har haal mein paana hai
Haan yehi rasta hai tera, tune ab jaana hai
Haan yehi sapna hai tera, tune pehchaana hai
Tujhe ab ye dikhaana hai

Saath Har Mod Par, Honge Saathi Tere
Ab Jo Bhi Ho...Par Hai Chhaana
Kandhon Se Milte Hain...Dushman Ke Hilte Hain
Ek Chehra Aksar Mujhe Yaad Aataa Hai
Is Dil Ko Chupke Chupke Vo Tadpata Hai
Jab Ghar Se Koi Bhi Kat Aaya Hai
Kaagaz Ko Maine Bheega Bheega Paaya Hai
Palkon Pe Yaadon Ke Kuchh Deep Jaise Jalte Hain
Kuchh Sapne Aise Hain, Jo Saath Saath Chalte Hain
Koi Sapna Na Toote, Koi Vaada Na Toote
Tum Chaho Jise Dil Se, Vo Tumse Na Roothe
Ab Jo Bhi Ho, Shola Banke Patthar Hai Pighlana
Ab Jo Bhi Ho, Baadal Banke Parbat Par Hai Chhaana
Kandhon Se Milte Hain ...Dushman Ke Hilte Hain
Chalta Hai Jo Ye Kaarvan, Goonji Si Hain Ye Vaadiyan
Hai Ye Zameen, Goonji Goonji
Ye Aasman, Goonja Goonja
Hai Ye Hawa, Goonji Goonji
Hai Ye Samaa, Goonja Goonja
Har Raste Ne, Har Wadi Ne, Har Parbat Ne Sadaa Di
Ham Jeeteinge, Ham Jeeteinge, Ham Jeeteinge Har Baazi
( Kandhon Se Milte Hain...Dushman Ke Hilte Hain )...(5)

Kitni Baatein
Hariharan:
Kitni baatein yaad aati hai
Tasveerein si ban jaati hain
Main kaise inhein bhooloon
Dil ko kya samjhaaun

Kitni baatein kehne ki hai
Honton par jo sehmi si hai
Ik roz inhein sun lo
Kyun aise gum-sum ho
Hariharan:
Kyun poori ho na paayi daastaan

Kaise aayi hai aisi dooriyaan
Hariharan:
Dono ke dilon mein chhupa hai
Jo ik anjaana sa gham
Kya ho paayega woh kam

Dono ne kabhi zindagi ke
Ik mod pe bhi jo paayi
Hai kaisi woh tanhaai
Koyi kya kahe

Alka:
Main tumse kahoongi, is baat ko agar tum
Zara aur saja ke kehte, zara ghooma-phira ke kehte
Toh achcha hota
Udit:

Tumko jab dekhoon lagti ho jaise nayi
Honthh hain pankhadi phool ki
Aankhein jaise jugnu chamke huwe
Soche mera ye dil dhadakte huwe
Agar main kahoon…
Agar main kahoon ye jo chehra hai
Jaise koyi chaand hai toh kya kahogi
Alka:
Main tumse kahoongi
Mujhko bhoole se bhi chaand tum na kaho
Chaand mein toh kayin daag hai
Mujhe phool na kehna woh murjhaate hain
Jugnu bhi na kehna woh kho jaate hain
Ye baatein puraani hai, jo mujhko sunaani hai
Kissi aur adaa se kehte, zara ghooma-phira ke kehte

Agar main kahoon mujhe tumse mohabbat hai
Meri bas yehi chaahat hai toh kya kahogi
Udit:
Agar main kahoon
Baatein sunke tumhaari main hairaan hoon
Jo bhi kehna hai kaise kahoon
Lagta tumhein kuchh bhi achcha nahin
Sach ko bhi kehti ho sachcha nahin
Alka:
Agar main kahoon..
Agar main kahoon tumhein pata nahin hai kyun
Hai pyaar mujhe bhi tumse toh kya kahoge
Udit:
Main tumse kahoonga, mere dil ka hai ye kehna
Ham ko hai saath mein rehna
Alka:
Ye dono ke dil mein hai na toh phir kyun kehna
Udit:
Agar main kahoon
Alka:
Toh main tumse kahoongi

Parinda - A classic movie
How many people are there who would not have seen Parinda (well, atleast if you take people who are more than 30 years old). Parinda was not director Vidhu Vinod Chopra's first movie, but if there are some movies that he will be most remembered by, it will be for this movie. Similarly, both Anil Kapoor and Madhuri Dixit have reckoned that this movie is one of their best movies. The movie was produced and directed by Vidhu Vinod Chopra, written by Shivkumar Subramaniam, and starred Jackie Shroff, and Nana Patekar in pivotal roles. Music was by R D Burman, and lyrics by Khursheed Hallauri. Some other actors who had great roles in the movies were Tom Alter, Anupam Kher, and Suresh Oberoi.
The movie was released in 1989. It tells the gripping story of the Bombay underworld, the fight between the rival gangs, the lack of trust and warfare between them, the role of the police. In the end, the movie was about the guy who got involved in a gang for survival, and who learns the hard way that life in the gang is brutal. In the end, everybody is expendable, life is brutal; and even a loyal member of the gang cannot save his own brother.
The reason why the movie was so popular was due to its realism, essentially attributed to the technical crew of the film, with Binod Pradhan´s cinematography being a great hit. The overall sound of the movie, the shots with the pigeons, the mad gun shooting amid the honeymoon lovemaking, the various deaths in the movie, the climatic scene where Jackie Shroff kills his own boss (and the killer of his brother) by burning him to death in a fire of alcohol bottles, all of these were shots that still enthrall people.
The movie is about the love between the 2 brothers, Jackie and Anil. When they were young and fighting for survival, Jackie joins Anna's gang and prospers. He sends Anil out for studying, with Anil all the time unaware that his brother actually worked for a gang leader (and too, a psychotic one). Jackie tries to keep his brother away from the gang, but eventually fails when Anil's friend, Inspector Anupam Kher is killed by Anna's men (using the meeting called by Anil). Madhuri Dixit is Paro, a teacher, who is in love with Anil, but moves away when she learns that he is now part of the gang. The rest of the movie is about the revenge taken by Anil, the consequences when Anna learns about this, and the reaction of Jackie. This movie is a must watch.
Videos of songs from the movie:
Tumse Milke (Singer(s): SURESH WADKAR AND ASHA BHOSLE)

Lyrics from the movie:
Pyaar Ke Mod Pe
pyaar ke mod pe, chhodoge jo baahe meree
tum ko dhoondhegee, jamaane mein nigaahe meree
jindagee mein jo kahee aaur main kho jaaoongaa
tum se milane ke liye, laut ke fir aaoongaa
aye meree jaana-ye-wafaa dekhanaa raahe meree
ayesaa naa ho, aye sanam jaao to fir aa naa sako
meree ye tamannaa hai, tum mere paas raho
kyo tumhe bhaatee nahee, aaj panaahe meree
koee ban jaaye meraa, ayesee takadeer nahee
dil ke aaeene mein ab koee tasaweer nahee
ye hakeekat hai, asar kho chookee, aahe meree
saath main tumhaare hoo, ab koee gam naa karo
khud ko tanahaa mere, hote humadam naa karo
ho ke maayoos naa dam tod de, chaahe meree

A Wednesday - Dynamic
Sometimes you come across a movie that shakes you a lot, and which leaves a promise that there is a space for movie making that is different from the standard cliches, or romances, or manufactured tragedies. 'A Wednesday' is a movie that I got around to watching much after the movie was released, and I was thoroughly impressed. You may not agree with everything that the movie propounds, but you cannot be but impressed by the pace of the movie, by some superb acting from the various stars, by the ability to leave you sympathizing with a person who directs acts of murder, and eventually admiring the director, Neeraj Pandey, who dared to make a movie with no main female lead in a romantic situation, and most of all, a movie without any songs.
The movie certainly was not a rich action sequences laden movie such as 'Singh in King', but given a choice, I would rather watch a movie like 'A Wednesday'. This was a movie that gained extremely from word of mouth, colleagues who had seen the movie gave enthusiastic reviews, and I would do the same if somebody asked me.
Without revealing the end, the twist in the movie as well as the impassioned speech by the bomb maker comes at the end of a gripping movie, and keep you on your seats till the final credits come to an end. The performances by Anupam Kher, Naseeruddin Shah, Jimmy Shergill and Deepal Shaw are all first rate, and the fact that they are able to make their presence felt in such a short movie (1.5) hours makes the performances even more creditable. The movie also introduces the concept of a backlash by the 'stupid, common man'; all of us who live in a city and go to our work places, and some of whom die in bomb blasts that happen in our cities.
The movie is about the flashback by a retired police commissioner of Bombay, Prakash Rathod [Anupam Kher]. He remembers an incident that happened in the space of 4 hours, on a normal weekday afternoon, the details of the incident not being present on any file or records (only in the memory of those involved). He gets a call from an anonymous caller about bombs kept in the city at different locations, and for defusing which, 4 Muslim terrorists in police custody needed to be rounded up from their separate locations. The caller, Naseeruddin Shah, situated on the top of a building, almost like a picnic, makes the police believe in his story when he discloses the location of a bomb right in the police station next to the police headquarters.
Anupam Kher gets complete authority from the Chief Minister to handle the negotiations, and gets down to business. He is obviously dealing with a person who knows how to conduct himself, defeating attempts to track his details. Eventually, inspite of a crack team and some fast police work, spear headed by a hot headed police officer (Jimmy Shergill in a great role), Anupam Kher is forced to follow all of the directions he is given, till the time that the terrorists are transported to an air field in Juhu. If you have not watched the movie, you should watch it.

Drona - disappointing
I was reading an article in a magazine last week, and it was talking about the forthcoming release of Drona. The article raved about this being a highly acclaimed technical movie, with an incredible amount of hard work and technical effects thrown in, and I was eagerly anticipating the movie. I managed to cajole the spouse and parents to see the movie along with me, and even though reviews were out by that time and did not promise much, I still went along. Bad decision, I should have believed the reviews.
Drona is a movie about a secret as old as existence, from the Hindu mythology where the Gods and Demons (asuras) churned the seas a long long time back, and one of the secrets that emerged was the elixir of ever-lasting life (amrit) which would make the owner live forever. In order to keep it away from the demons (you would not give anything so powerful to the demons), it was decided that there would be a set of warriors who would forever protect the secret of this 'amrit', and they and their descendants would be called 'Dronas'. In addition, there would another set of warriors to protect them. And here is this 'Cindrella' in the shape of a man, who has been terrorized since childhood by a horrid foster mother, who would suddenly discover that he is the 'Drona', and then go through mysteries aided by a beautiful protector. He would fight the evil monster who killed his father, and save the secret.
What a fantasy. Imagine the story with its deep magic, mystery, and special effects that would make this movie on the class of a Peter Pan, or a Harry Potter, but the movie failed miserably to do anything in this regard. The movie did not have much of magic, it had a fairly comic villain who would repeat a phrase so many times that you got sick of it, you had not too much good music, not much of action except for a car chase, a scene on a train, and a couple others, but there was something missing. Somehow the picture was not gripping enough, and even though I was forcing myself to not be overall critical right away, there was just not enough excitement.
For all this, I don't lay too much blame at the heads of either Abhishek Bachchan, or Priyanka Chopra (for her, it was a big role, pity it did not work out), or the criminal display of Kay Kay Menon as a shallow (not much cunning or mystery in him) magician who was also a demon (he just did not look or act like a demon, more like a normal villain who knew some magic). Most of the mistake I would lay at the door of the Director, Goldie Behl. There was not enough guidance about how to make this movie, sparkle, where even a movie like Krrsh, with its limited story, was still gripping enough with some good action. Jaya Bachchan was totally wasted.

Singh is King: Nothing to write home about
Singh is King made a major splash on the movie circuit. Akshay Kumar was acknowledged as a real hot item in the past few years, being credited for hits that he gave (Namastey London, Welcome, etc), and not being tarred with the flops (Tashan). He must be doing well enough that Shahrukh Khan must be getting sleepless nights. And then I read that Singh is King had a mega 3 day weekend rush, making more than most other movies that have been released in the past few years.
So, it was with some amount of anticipation that I went to watch this movie; and the reaction at the end of the movie was - another 'Welcome'. I must confess, I enjoyed 'Welcome' while watching it, but immediately after that I was thinking about why I enjoyed such a movie that did not have much of a story, depended on action, and was basically a senseless movie. Singh is Kinng is such a movie, made in the same genre.
The movie was controversial because of the depiction of all the main characters as Sardars / Sikhs, and there was the usual objection from some sikh bodies, but that died down and the movie release went off without the problems that the Sunny starrer 'Jo Bole So Nihaal' did.
The movie starred Akshay Kumar, Katrina Kaif, Ranvir Shorey, Neha Dhupia, Javed Jaffrey, and Sonu Sood. The direction was done by Anees Bazmee, and the movie was produced by Vipul Amrutlal Shah. Music was by Pritam and RDB (the song is Singh Is Kinng). Although Katrina Kaif was the heroine, there were a lot of scenes shot on Neha Dhupia, and she earned a lot of positive reviews. The music also did the job, with the title song being good, and the romantic 'Teri Ore' being superb.
The movie is all about the adventures of Happy Singh (Akshay), who is a simple guy, always ready to help people. The whole village in Punjab where Happy Singh lives is unhappy with another son of theirs, Lakhan "Lucky" Singh (Sonu Sood). He had gone to Australia, got jailed for a drug crime that he did not commit, and after coming out, he had taken revenge and eventually became the mafia overlord. Happy Singh volunteers to get him back to the village, and sets off along with a reluctant Om Puri (there are some comedy scenes between the two). They get into a boarding card mixup, and land up in Egypt instead of Australia. While waiting for the mistake to get corrected, Akshay runs into Katrina in Cairo, and after a few encounters (in which he discovers that she wants to get rid of all criminals), he falls head over heels for her.
Well, he eventually reaches Australia, only to find that Lucky Singh is not exactly eager to get back to his village. Wandering around, he runs into an India lady who takes care of him, and he starts treating her like a mother. In a big coincidence, one of many, Lucky Singh gets injured in a shootout and Happy Singh takes over as the leader of the gang. In another coincidence, Katrina turns out out to be the daughter of the lady who helped Akshay, and Akshay helps her out by pretending that she is still rich.
The rest of the movie is about how Akshay wins over all his detractors, faces many challenges including the fact that Katrina is about to be married off to somebody else, and so on. If you watch the opening scene where Sonu Sood catches a would-be-assassin by jumping off a building while wearing a parachute under his party jacket, catches the killer who is running away in a bike, and then the parachute and Sonu again climb in the air where Sony drops the killer, you can imagine how the rest of the movie would be like.
