Halla Bol - An attempt to make a gripping movie - Starring Ajay Devgun, Vidya Balan, and Pankaj Kapur (2008)

RajKumar Santoshi is one of the most famous names in Bollywood, a direction who has been there for decades in the industry and has given a number of incredible hits; however, he also seems to be struggling with the current scene in Bollywood, making far fewer movies than during the 1990's when he was at his peak. He carries a lot of history of previous hits along with him, causing people to see his movie. Right from his association with Ardh Satya in 1982, and then making a mark as a director for movies such as Ghayal, Damini, Ghatak, Andaz Apna Apna, Khakee, he has been hitting hits more often than failures. When you remember a movie such as Damini which was a hard hitting attack on the prevalent system of law and justice, and how the power of the mighty can almost overcome the power of the law, a case such as the Jessica Lal case was made for him to show his power as a director, moving his audience to action.
Halla Bol was a movie released in 2008, directed by Rajkumar Santoshi and starring Ajay Devgun, Vidya Balan and Pankaj Kapur. The movie also showed a number of others stars in small cameos (no doubt leveraging the power of Rajkumar Santoshi based on his long history in Bollywood). So you have a story that seems to be inspired by the Jessica Lal case, but also shows the life of a  film star who reached a high point through not seeing whatever was happening around him, and then saw something so shocking that it finally caused him to find his conscience and speak up about what he saw.

Halla Bol cannot be counted as one of Santoshi's best hits; when you have seen movies such as Ghayal or Damini or Ghatak, you really cannot put Halla Bol in the same league. It is still a good movie, although you wonder about why Vidya Balan took this role; and you come out of the movie with a realization that although Ajay Devgun was the lead star, if there was a role you would remember from the movie, it would be the role played by Pankaj Kapur. The movie is good in parts, especially near the end, but the first half does give a feeling of a slow buildup, and you can see similar speed and slow touches in other parts of the movie as well. The music of the movie was by Sukhwinder Singh, and you really don't see the music as matching the performance of the film, nothing really worth writing about.
From this point, the story of the movie is outlined, so if you don't want to know the story, don't go ahead from here.
The story shows a film star, Ashfaque (played by Ajay Devgun), a rags to riches story. He was a part of a street troupe, being run by Siddhu (Pankaj Kapur). Siddhu is a reformed dacoit, who is looking at his street plays as a way of highlighting important issues that the masses will see, and think about, and hopefully bring about some change (you know how difficult it is for that to really happen). But Ashfaque wants to rise high, and climbs the ladder to become a famous film star, with a new name, Sameer Khan. He is an accomplished actor, and is now settled with a wife Sneha (played by Vidya Balan).
However, to become successful, you do need to do make compromises, and he has made many; he becomes a part of the system, being a manipulator and part of the corrupt world, but one day, he gets a dose of reality when he is a witness of a horrible crime at a party, and that eventually brings him back to his senses. But can he take on the system and the powerful and get justice ?

Baabul (2006) - Amitabh Bachchan pushes for widow remarriage in this movie

Baabul released in the year 2006 and talks about the highly sensitive issue of widow remarriage. We are living in the twenty first century but in India, widows still lead a very hard life. The rural-urban divide in terms of the position of widow within mainstream society is only a difference in degree. The question of a widow remarrying and starting life afresh is considered to be blasphemous by many. Babul tackles this very controversial subject by focussing on all the obstacles

Talented artist Malvika Talwar ( Rani Mukherjee) meets handsome rich guy Avinash on a golf course. Following a short misunderstanding, the two fall in love with each other. They decide to get married. Avinash is completely doted upon by his parents, Balraj (Amitabh Bachchan) and Shobhna ( Hema Malini). Avinash’s parents willing acceps Malvika. Her parents too have no problem with the match. She has also the blessings of her best friend Rajat Verma (John Abraham) who secretly lover her but has never had the guts to confess his feelings.

Malvika and Avinash marry and soon become proud parents of baby boy. Things are going smoothly and Malvika is blissfully happy with her husband, son and her in-laws, who treat her like their own child. However life goes from bed of roses to bed of thorns as Avinash dies in a automobile accident. Malvika is totally shattered as are Avinash’s parents, Balrah and Shobhana. In spite of his grief, Balraj is sensitive to the desolation that he sees in his daughter-in-law’s eyes and is determined to remove it. He decides to get Malvika married to her childhood sweetheart Rajat. Initially Malvika is unwilling to start life anew but soon gives in. Shobhana too is not too happy with her husband’s decision as she is concerned whether after remarrying Malvika will let them have any access to her grandson or not. However soon she too come around. The climax sees an impassioned Balraj questioning society’s right to deny a widow the right to a life when the same right is not taken away from a widower. As he convinces his elder brother Balwant (Om Puri), who is against the notion of widow marriage, the humane impact of this act, he sends out a solemn plea to society to change its attitude towards women and particularly towards widows.

Babul is a sincere effort by Ravi Chopra to talk about a relatively taboo topic. He succeeds too up to a point of spreading awareness. Competent acting by one and all makes this film a wonderful watch. Aadesh Srivastav’s music is melodious and catchy. On the whole Babul is an honest attempt to talk about the burning question of widows and their plight.

Gharonda (1977) - A wonderful but sad story

The quest to have a house of one's own is a very strong impulse, capable of stirring up strong emotions in any person. Gharonda is a movie on that concept, on the quest of a young couple to have a house of their own. I was very impressed with the movie, even though the movie can leave you down a path where you feel that life can go very negative, and where events can happen that leave you feel disillusioned with life.
The movie was released in 1977, and became popular as a movie with emotions, and some great music. The movie was directed and produced by Bhimsain, with some great lyrics by Gulzar and music by Jaidev. The movie starred Amol Palekar, Zarina Wahab, Shreeram Lagoo, and Jalal Agha.

Sudip (Amol Palekar) and Chaya (Zarina Wahab) are colleagues working in the same office in Mumbai. Like other middle class citizens, they drea, of owning a house in Mumbai. They are not yet married, but plan to get married when they have bought a house; and for which they paid all their lives savings. However, they are in for a shock when in a few months, the builder runs into difficulties, and all their money is lost.
At around this time, their boss and the owner of the firm, Shreeram Lagoo starts getting more interested in Chaya; and then the couple make an audacious plan. Lagoo is rich, alone, and a heart patient, and they figure that he will die soon after marriage, and then Chaya will be a rich widow. Chaya is not comfortable with this idea, but accepts it after persuasion.
Soon, Chaya settles in the life of a married woman, and wonders of wonders, Lagoo starts getting better. Sudip starts seeing his plan going awry, and then when Chaya scolds Sudip for visiting often, he gets puzzled. The decision point finally occurs in the end when Modi (Shreeram Lagoo) gets a heart attack, and Chaya nurses him back to health; Sudip realizes that she is gone from his life forever, and leaves.

Lage Raho Munnabhai - continuation of the Munnabhai series

With the success of Munnabhai MBBS, it was clear that there would be a sequel, it was just waiting for the sequel to come. And so came the sequel in 2006, called Lage Raho Munnabhai (carry on Munnabhai). The movie starred the main set of 2 characters, Munnabhai (Sanjay Dutt) and his sidekick Circuit (Arshad Warsi). The movie showcases the story of a ruffian who becomes infused with Gandhian ideals (under the influence of the spirit of Gandhi), and tries to share the same with others around him, mixed with a Mumbai type way of speaking.
Sanjay Dutt is Munnabhai, a Mumbai don who indulges in the familiar show of force, and employs muscles to get his work done. He is also infatuated with a local radio jockey Janhavi (Vidya Balan) and wants to get to meet her. However, how to get a ruffian to meet a beautiful radio jockey is not easy to visualize, and then he hears of a contest where the first person to answer multiple questions asked by her gets to meet her. The contest is about answering questions on Mahatma Gandhi (Bapu), and this is where the mix with Gandhian ideology starts to happen.

Lage Raho Munna Bhai (2006) starring Sanjay Dutt and Arshad Warsi

How does a local hood answer questions about Mahatma Gandhi ? Well, he does this by kidnapping a group of professors by force, and then asking them to answer the questions (and of course, if a professor answers the question correctly, he would get a prize). So, Munnabhai gets the answers correctly, and being highly nervous, manages to make it to the radio station to meet his lady love. He presents himself as an expert in Gandhian ideology, and impresses her to the extent that she takes him with her to present a lecture on Gandhian philosophy to a community of senior citizens (after taking a massive crash course in Gandhian ideology). In this time period, Gandhi appears to him and offers to help him, as long as Munnabhai does everything that Gandhi asks him to do.
And so starts the experiment of a underworld don with Gandhi's spirits, in which he comes much closer to Janhavi and even hosts a radio problem along with her where he expounds the logic of Gandhian ideals and offers to solve the problems of people. And it is here that the movie is mesmerizing, bringing forth the ideals of Gandhi's truths in various stories; the story about the guy who loses his father's money in the stock market and is contemplating suicide, and who calls Munnabhai as a lost soul is incredible, heart moving. The solution is typically Gandhian.
The twist in the main plot is of course the builder Lucky Singh (Boman Irani) who wants to get the old people evicted from the house so that he can gift the house to his daughter's future father-in-law Kulbhushan Kharbanda. He employs Munnabhai and Circuit to get this done, and uses a time when Munnabhai has gone with Janhavi and the old folks to Goa, with circuit emptying the house (not knowing that this was something that Munnabhai would not have wanted). When Munnabhai gets back, he is shocked, but Lucky Singh is unwilling to give the house back. And so starts the attempt by Munnabhai to use Gandhian philosophy to force Lucky Singh to give the house back - in the midst of this, Munnabhai is forced to confront the truth and tell Janhavi all about himself and the truth (and of course she leaves him).
However, it is this Gandhigiri that allows Munnabhai to eventually win out and use the power of truth to solve his problems. The movie inspired a large number of people to adopt Gandhian practices to try to solve their problems.

Dostana - Interesting movie

I consider Dostana a new age movie. Here is a movie that took a subject that arouses great controversies in India (remember the controversy about Fire?) and makes a comedy about it, if you ignore the last 30 minutes of drama. The movie is eminently watchable, and does not try to preach in any way. At the same time, since the concept of the movie is more about normal guys pretending to be homosexuals, the movie really does not dwell too much on the parts that tend to squeamish to straight people (there is hardly any hugging or other intimacy, or even romantic talk shown between the 2 leads), and hence the movie certainly will not be portrayed as a movie that can be seen as the coming of age of homosexual movies in Bollywood.
However, the movie treats homosexuality as perfectly normal, to the extent that normal, single (and easily sexed up guys - since the opening shot shows these 2 guys getting up from beds after having spent a night with women) and handsome guys decide to play gays in order to get a house. The other people in the movie do not seem to have any problem whatsoever with them, and even the Punjabi mother accepts the situation after the initial shock and ritually accepts the partner as her 'bahu'.

The movie starred three hot actors, Priyanka Chopra, Abhishek Bachchan and John Abraham, with the location set as Miami. Abhishek and John do not know each other, but run into each other a few times, most recently as when they are looking at the same house together. They are fascinated with the house that is available, but are told that they are not eligible since the young niece of the owner is already staying there, and 2 males in the same house will not be permissible. That is when they (with Abhishek taking the lead and John being more reluctant) decide to act as a gay couple. If they are a gay couple, then there is no problem, and they get the part. Things are going well, and they bond with the girl as well (and the scenes between them are fairly good).
There are circumstances in between, when one mother (Kiron Kher) turns up (since she receives a document confirming the gay relationship) and is horrified at the relationship her son is in, but she slowly accepts the relationship and is fine after that. There is an absolutely hilarious scene when Priyanka's boss (Boman Irani in a short but great role), who is quite obviously homosexual, comes for a party at her home (in fact, he is called since Priyanka wants to impress him in the hope that he will make her the boss before he leaves). He however, does not oblige, and makes Bobby Deol the new boss of the magazine.
Slowly, the duo finds that they are coming closer to her, while she is falling for Bobby Deol and he is falling for her. This is when the movie starts to lose its sheen; you start to see emotions being displayed and the story starts to stutter at this point. Maybe the actors were not really good for such a role. They plot as to how to separate these 2 (although there is one interesting situation whereby when Priyanka gets to know about their efforts, she suspects that these 2 are after Bobby Deol (not after her)). They eventually use Bobby's 5 year old son to plant differences and succeed in their plan (although Priyanka turns both of them down and kicks them out of the flat when they profess their love for her). In the end, they repent and try to bring them together.
Lot of skin show (including an item number by Shilpa Shetty), one great song (Maa Ka Ladla and maybe also Desigirl) and some good views of Miami. The movie is eminently watchable and worth buying and keeping. The movie is directed by Tarun Mansukhani, and produced by Karan Johar. Music is by Vishal-Shekhar.

A Wednesday - Dynamic

Sometimes you come across a movie that shakes you a lot, and which leaves a promise that there is a space for movie making that is different from the standard cliches, or romances, or manufactured tragedies. 'A Wednesday' is a movie that I got around to watching much after the movie was released, and I was thoroughly impressed. You may not agree with everything that the movie propounds, but you cannot be but impressed by the pace of the movie, by some superb acting from the various stars, by the ability to leave you sympathizing with a person who directs acts of murder, and eventually admiring the director, Neeraj Pandey, who dared to make a movie with no main female lead in a romantic situation, and most of all, a movie without any songs.
The movie certainly was not a rich action sequences laden movie such as 'Singh in King', but given a choice, I would rather watch a movie like 'A Wednesday'. This was a movie that gained extremely from word of mouth, colleagues who had seen the movie gave enthusiastic reviews, and I would do the same if somebody asked me.

Hindi Movie A Wednesday (released in 2008)

Without revealing the end, the twist in the movie as well as the impassioned speech by the bomb maker comes at the end of a gripping movie, and keep you on your seats till the final credits come to an end. The performances by Anupam Kher, Naseeruddin Shah, Jimmy Shergill and Deepal Shaw are all first rate, and the fact that they are able to make their presence felt in such a short movie (1.5) hours makes the performances even more creditable. The movie also introduces the concept of a backlash by the 'stupid, common man'; all of us who live in a city and go to our work places, and some of whom die in bomb blasts that happen in our cities.
The movie is about the flashback by a retired police commissioner of Bombay, Prakash Rathod [Anupam Kher]. He remembers an incident that happened in the space of 4 hours, on a normal weekday afternoon, the details of the incident not being present on any file or records (only in the memory of those involved). He gets a call from an anonymous caller about bombs kept in the city at different locations, and for defusing which, 4 Muslim terrorists in police custody needed to be rounded up from their separate locations. The caller, Naseeruddin Shah, situated on the top of a building, almost like a picnic, makes the police believe in his story when he discloses the location of a bomb right in the police station next to the police headquarters.
Anupam Kher gets complete authority from the Chief Minister to handle the negotiations, and gets down to business. He is obviously dealing with a person who knows how to conduct himself, defeating attempts to track his details. Eventually, inspite of a crack team and some fast police work, spear headed by a hot headed police officer (Jimmy Shergill in a great role), Anupam Kher is forced to follow all of the directions he is given, till the time that the terrorists are transported to an air field in Juhu. If you have not watched the movie, you should watch it.

Sarkar Raj - Taut, but does not rise to be a great movie

Sarkar Raj was a move that was awaited for quite some time; it came after a few clunkers for The Factory of Ram Gopal Verma such as 'Aag', 'Darling', etc. Memories of his earlier movies such as Satya, Company, Rangeela, and Sarkar (for which Sarkar Raj is the sequel) were fading out due to these recent disastrous movies that he made. All his admissions that the movies were bad, mistakes were made, etc, don't really help in lifting his reputation. So, this movie was awaited for multiple reasons:
- This movie showcased the Bachchan clan; Amitabh, Abhishek, and Aishwarya (not Jaya though)
- It was supposed to have the same kind of suspense, the taut and slick making that was there in the original movie Sarkar (made in 2005)

Sarkar Raj Movie - 2008; Amitabh, Abhishek, Aishwarya, Bachchan

Unlike some of his other movies where the actual direction was by other people, Sarkar Raj was actually directed by Ram Gopal Verma. Other credits for the movie include script by Prashant Pandey, background score by Amar Mohile (and the background score is haunting and fast throughout the movie, although a bit loud), cinematography by Amit Roy, and action by Allan Amin.
The movie takes off from where the previous movie had ended, with the Nagres (minus Kay Kay Menon) being in command of Maharashtra through their reign of force (although the way that elected politicians are seen to be humiliated by them is a bit patronising). There is the normal tussle between the ruling Chief Minister and his opponents, but both of them pay respects to Sarkar (Amitabh) and his son and heir Shankar (Abhishek). It is at this stage that a beautiful tall CEO of an energy company, Sheppard Power Plant in the form of Anita Ranjan (Aishwarya Rai) presents a plan for a power plant that will meet the future energy needs of Maharashtra. The only hitch is that the best place to setup the plant is a place called Thackerwadi, in rural Maharashtra. Sarkar is against this proposal, but his son sees this as a beneficial mechanism, and is willing to go to any lengths to move this proposal ahead. He first tries to convince the local leader and Gandhian Rao Saheb, and then convince the rest of the villagers about the advantages of this plant.
However, he is in way above his head. The grandson of Rao Saheb (Somji) starts to work against the deal, and to canvass people against this deal, making the deal a tough sell. Further, the management of the power company seems to think that Gujarat is now a better deal for this plant. Abhishek does not seem to realize what he he is against, and even his power (which he hardly ever uses) is unable to prevent harm to him, his wife (Tanissha in a small role) and in the end, he cannot even prevent his own killing by a hired sharp-shooter (the shooting scene was not very good, seemed amateurish). It is only when Amitabh, taking on responsibility again, starts to unravel the mystery behind his death and to show what he is capable of (basically kills everybody involved, somewhat like Michael Corleone ordering the killing of all those against the family).
And these are the weak points of the movie - If the family is so powerful and people so scared by them, how is that a massive conspiracy can get created against them (after all, in this case, there must be a large number of people who knew there was a conspiracy) without the involved fearing that the Sarkar will kill them if their involvement in the conspiracy became known. Secondly, the last 20 minutes seem like magic, where the writer wrote a twist in the story that seemed to have been manufactured out of thin air. So, the end where the last murder is shown, that emerged out of thin air, but was very chilling.
Acting is okay, with some strong parts. Aishwarya did not get all that great a role (it seemed in the end that she was being projected to be the leader in any sequel), Amitabh was good in parts. This was basically Abhishek's movie, but he came across a person who was not in touch with reality, could not comprehend that he was just a pawn in a conspiracy.

Bhootnath - Watchable

I watched Bhootnath just the day after having watched Jannat just the previous day, and given that my impression of Jannat was not good, any movie would have been good. But Bhootnath was a movie that impressed in parts. The Director, Vivek Sharma, tried to take many human emotions into the movie; thus taking the movie into 3 separate parts - the first part where the ghost appears to be evil and a danger to whoever tries to enter the property; the second part where the child makes friend with the ghost and turns him into a proper civilized person-like character with human emotions; and the third part where there is an attempt to throw in a lot of tear-jerkering emotional scene so that the ghost can disappear and everything can turn out normal. In the end, these attempts to make the movie cater to many interests put a lot of strain on the overall movie, and my feeling is that it did not turn out as well as could be. The movie takes on a heavy social issue of how children go abroad, and become of that land.
The movie is geared towards kids, and that was clear when I saw the songs. They were all songs designed to appeal to children, and it did seem a bit different to see songs that had a lot of kids in them; but most of the audience was adults, so was wondering whether there was a mismatch in terms of the advertising of the movie versus the intended effect of the advertising. The movie has a cast that is capable of some great things - Amitabh Bachchan, Aman Siddiqui, Juhi Chawla, Rajpal Yadav, Satish Shah, Priyanshu Chatterjee and Shahrukh Khan. Amitabh Bachchan gives a good role, but one feels that in the middle of the movie, he gets overshadowed by the kid, and then in the latter half of the movie, Shahrukh Khan seems to get most of the attention (Shahrukh Khan had a role that was more than a guest appearance, but less than a full role). Rajpal Yadav was very thoroughly under-used in the movie, getting 2 very brief scenes (almost like a cameo).
The movie is about the intersection of the characters of the young boy, Banku, and the ghost of Kailash Nath. The family of Shahrukh Khan, an engineer with a cruise company, comprises of his wife Juhi Chawla, and son Banku (Banku is a very naughty guy, and it soon shows up in school where he gets into numerous fracas (showed in a humorous way)). Shahrukh has to move his family to Goa, and his company arranges for a rental in Nath Villa (one wonders how his company did a rental in a villa that everyone knows is haunted). Juhi does not believe in ghosts, and their son has no idea about what a ghost is.
And then Banu meets the Ghost, and soon manages to control the ghost through his antics, his innocence and his questions (it helps that the ghost is of a man who was devoted to his son, and who died pining for him). And then there is a lot of camadrie between Amitabh and Amar, while Juhi is not able to believe that there is a such a thing as a ghost. This means that the ghost learns to dress normally, and even to shed tears when Banku suffers a serious injury. There is an excellent scene when Juhi realizes that her son was telling the truth, during a stage performance, and is able to actually imagine as to where the ghost must be standing.
From this point onwards, the movie becomes very serious, with the aim being to help the ghost forgive his son (who had gone abroad and not returned until his mother died pining for him), and eventually help him attain salvation. At this point, the movie moves into heavy emotional scenes, and I could see the atmosphere suddenly becoming silent in the movie hall. Music is by Vishaal Shekhar, but one felt that it was unnecessary other than the heavy Samay Ka Pahiya.

Prahaar: A classic movie for Nana Patekar

There are times when you watch that is so impressive that you don't mind watching it again. I found Prahaar to be one such movie. The movie was released in 1991, and it has been quite some time, but it can't take away the topical nature of the movie. The movie was directed by Nana Patekar and produced by Sudhakar Bokade. The movie had music by Laxmikant Pyarelal and lyrics by Mangesh Kulkarni.
Nana Patekar showed a commendable amount of skill in extracting good performances from the cast of characters that included Dimple Kapadia and Madhuri Dixit (there was a story floating around the time when the movie was made that he wanted a natural look, and so when one of the female leads reported to the set in make-up, he asked her to wash the make-up off). The movie does not have a direct villain, but there is a struggle against many kinds of bad elements, whether it be terrorists, or the normal city ruffians and hoodlums who take hafta (extortion money), or even of the normal population who have been so terrorised that they have lost some of their sense of right or wrong. The movie also has some good performances from the second tier of characters such as Gautam Joglekar (who plays Peter D'Souza).
The movie starts off as the story about men who have joined the army as commandos. They start to undergo the army commando training course under the tutelage of Major Chauhan (Nana - who actually took a brief training course at the army commando training course), and the course can be pretty hard, forcing many of them to feel like dropping out. Some do, but Peter does not and completes the course finally. By that time, he has developed a respect for Major Chauhan. The training course depicted is fairly detailed, with a certain amount of humour showing up.
At the end of the course, they are called to undertake an anti-terrorist operation, successful, but Peter is crippled and has to return home and leave the army. He reaches home, and his fiancee Madhuri is glad to have him back. His army training however soon causes him to start opposing the local mafia who extort money, and soon he is killed. At this time, Major Chauhan comes for the funeral, and sees how the local police is unconcerned and takes no action.
Major Chauhan takes up as a paying guest in the house of Dimple (a young widow with a small child) and gets affectionate towards the child (they never actually show any romance between Nana and Dimple, although there are many hints towards something like this possibly developing). Once he actually takes on the ruffians single-handedly when they tease Dimple, but soon realizes that the local citizens are so suppressed by the mafia that they actually turn on Nana for going against the ruffians. And then the epic scene where the gangsters (this was from an age where the use of guns was less) decide to attack Dimple's house and Nana.
They first scare Dimple and her child, and then they taunt Nana. And then the fight begins - you can see the untrained ruffians being very confident of their youth and numbers against a person who is after a single person and older than them, and yet soon they realize that the person whom they are attacking can defeat all of them, and Nana proceeds to do just that. In the process, he actually kills them, and is soon hauled up before the court. And his speech about being a soldier, and fighting against the vermin of society goes in vain, since the judge declares that his fight is misplaced, he is not responsible for repairing the civilian society, and he is sent for counseling until he is over this.
The movie is a movie that talks about how the fight against injustice is something that all of us can handle, how the personal conviction and strength of a person can make them win odds, and yet how sometime the whole fight can be futile in the face of a disinterested administration.

Swades - A very watchable movie

Swades, released in 2004, was a much awaited movie. Ever since Lagaan was released in 2001 and its theme of a rural village uniting to fight a foreign oppressor became a hit, there was always the expectation of another movie on a rural theme making it big. And thus when the same director, Ashutosh announced another movie, this one too on a rural theme, there was a great amount of hope that the presence of Shahrukh Khan would make this movie a super-hit as well. However, this was not to be. The movie came, got some good press, got some criticism over its length and the fact the movie seemed to many people too unrealistic, too much like a documentary. Come on, a successful NASA scientist chucking it all away, and then going off to generate electricity almost single-handedly for a rural village. Fiction indeed.

Swades - We the People

The fact remains, Swades is a great movie. The movie has a legend of 'We, the people', and seems to be a labor of love (with the movie having been written, produced and directed by Ashutosh Gowariker). It shows a fair amount of the ills such as lack of knowledge, illiteracy and discrimination that plague our villages. At the same time, it does not present these as obstacles that cannot be overcome (as many other movies do, which try to show conflict as the only way to resolve the problems). The movie has a great romance theme, heavily under-stated with a great new comer performance by Gayatri Joshi. The movie has great music, seemingly very appropriate for the movie theme (Music is by A. R. Rahman, lyrics by Javed Akhtar).
Swades is inspired by a real life NRI couple who returned to India (and who are credited in Swades), and developed a pedal power generator to light remote schools that are not on the power grid. Ashutosh Gowariker read about their effort in a book, got intrigued, and spent time with them. He also visited a remote village called Bilgaon in the Narmada Valley (the village is famous for volunteering effort 'shramdaan' to make their village self-sufficient in electricity). Inspired by all this, he set out to make the story about a disillusioned NRI who gets inspired enough to try to generate electricity for the village.
Mohan Bhargav (Shahrukh Khan) works for NASA, with a great career ahead of him. He is as far away from India's problems as possible. The turning point for him comes when he decides to go on vacation to India on his parents death anniversary, and to get his ayah / nanny Kaveriamma (Kishori Ballal) to come and live with him. When he reaches, he finds that his ayah no longer is in the ashram / home, but has been taken away by a woman. He reaches the village mentioned, and finds that his old childhood friend is the woman Gita who took Kaveriamma away. Mohan soon finds that the village has its own warts in terms of preventing low castes children from attending school, and is soon able to convince the village elders to change and let all children attend school.
Gita is not sure about why Mohan has come, and confronts him about trying to take Kaveriamma as a servant to the US. Mohan claims that he only wants her to have a comfortable life. Kaveriamma over-hears and sends Mohan on a journey that will change his life. He is sent to a village some distance away to collect rent on a property owned by Gita. Mohan travels over there, discovers that the tenant is in a pitiable condition, a former weaver who is not allowed to be a farmer because of caste and is leading a very bad life. Instead of collecting money, Mohan gives him some money. This visit shakes him.
He is now more convinced that change is required, to the point that he argues with village elders when they strive to convince him of the superiority of Indian civilization over American culture; he has seen a villager in a pitiable condition because of caste, and is unwilling to agree to a lot of lecture on the past; the present is what needs to improve. He gets his chance when there is an electricity failure during the Ramlila and asks for volunteer effort from the village in order to try and convert water at a height to turn a turbine and generate electricity.
He rigs up a pipe from a the water at a height to turn a turbine; this is the phase when he is also concurrently working on his NASA project as well as falling for Gita (and she, with those wonderfully expressive eyes, falling for him). He succeeds in generating power (captured in a magical, if somewhat romantic moment, when an old lady in a hut sees the bulb coming on). However, his time in the village is over. Kaveriamma refuses to go back with him to the US, and he has a tearful separation with Gita outside the village.
He gets back to his job in NASA, with a great career ahead of him, but he cannot forget his experiences of India and the village. He is in the dilemma of staying or going back, which means that his bright future in the US will be over; but can he follow his feelings and do what he think is right. He gets counseling from a friend, and from his boss, but to no avail. Once the satellite is launched, he resigns from NASA and gos back.
If you are a cynic, then this is nothing but a film-maker's attempt to cash in on patriotic feelings; but I would consider this a must see film for every Indian. If the movie inspires you to something that would do good for society and for the country, then it would be well worth it.

Lyrics:

Yeh Jo Desh Hain Tera (Sung by A R Rehman)

(Ye jo des hai tera, swades hai tera, tujhe hai pukaara¦
Ye woh bandhan hai jo kabhi toot nahin sakta) -2

Mitti ki jo khushboo, tu kaise bhoolaayega
Tu chaahe kahin jaaye, tu laut ke aayega
Nayi nayi raahon mein, dabi dabi aahon mein
Khoye khoye dilse tere, koyi ye kahega
Ye jo des hai tera, swades hai tera, tujhe hai pukaara
Ye woh bandhan hai jo kabhi toot nahin sakta

(Hmm…hmm…hmm…hmm…hmm…)
Tujhse zindagi, hai ye keh rahi
Sab toh paa liya, ab hai kya kami
Yun toh saare sukh hai barse
Par door tu hai apne gharse
Aa laut chal tu ab diwaane
Jahaan koyi toh tujhe apna maane
Awaaz de tujhe bulaane, wahi des
Ye jo des hai tera, swades hai tera, tujhe hai pukaara
Ye woh bandhan hai jo kabhi toot nahin sakta
(Hmm¦hmm¦hmm¦hmm¦hmm¦)

Ye pal hai wahi, jis mein hai chhupi
Koyi ek sadi, saari zindagi
Tu na poochh raaste mein kaahe
Aaye hain is tarha do raahein
Tu hi toh hai raah jo sujhaaye
Tu hi toh hai ab jo ye bataaye
Chaahe toh kis disha mein jaaye wahi des
Ye jo des hai tera, swades hai tera, tujhe hai pukaara
Ye woh bandhan hai jo kabhi toot nahin sakta

Lamhe (1991) - Anil Kapoor and Sridevi

Lamhe was released in 1991 under the banner of Yashraj Films, directed by Yash Chopra. The movie was acclaimed, won the Best Film Award at the Filmfare awards, but failed to click at the box office and did not earn much money. It is widely believed that 'Lamhe' was far ahead of its time, and the viewing public was not comfortable with the basic tenet of a story where a person loved a girl, but eventually married her daughter (a daughter who grew up based on his support). I remember at that time that people were somewhat shocked at the thought that a person could marry someone who he had helped bring up.
Now things would be better and audiences are willing to understand and comprehend the movie. That this was not a story that suggested some form of incest, but is in fact a beautiful love story all about emotions and the tenderness of a love story in which the girl is determined. Hence, over a period of time, this movie has not been entirely forgotten. I can occasionally find people talking about the movie. Music of the film has been given by Shiv-Hari.

Lamhe (1991) - Anil Kapoor and Sridevi

The movie had some great music, and pretty good acting by the 4 main actors; Sridevi (in a double role), Anil Kapoor (as a young and also as a more mature role), Waheeda Rehman in a great role, and Anupam Kher. It was primarily these 4 actors around whom the whole movie revolves. There are some great locations in Rajasthan in the movie.
The movie is about the character of Anil Kapoor. He is a very rich orphan, living in the care of his governess Waheeda Rehman. He goes to Rajasthan where he meets Pallavi (Sridevi) and falls madly for her. She however is in love with an Air Force officer Deepak Malhotra although this is a secret. At this time, tragedy strikes since Pallavi's father dies of a heart attack after losing his property to relatives in a court case. Viren (Anil Kapoor) promises to take care of her, and even though he is distraught over her loving somebody else, he gets her married to Deepak. (There is a great scene where Viren slaps Pallavi's greedy relatives while negotiating over retaining Pallavi's property till her marriage).
However, both Pallavi and Deepak die in an accident a year later and leave a infant daughter Pooja. Viren can't bear to look at her since her birthday is the day of Pallavi's death. However, as Pooja grows up under the love of the Daija (Waheeda), she starts developing a crush on Viren (Kunwarji as she calls him). He does not reciprocate and in fact is seeing a girl called Anita who wants to marry him although Viren is not sure. However, he is getting affected by Pooja's resemblance to Pallavi and also getting attracted by her vivaciousness.
The rest of the movie is about how Viren works out his feelings, being guided to some extent by his close friend Anupam Kher. In the end, you can guess what happens, but the overall direction of the movie and the story is sensitive, without too much extravaganza. The last scene at the fort is great, where he confesses his love for Pooja and not Pallavi.

Hum Aapke Hain Kaun: A super-duper hit

5 years after Sooraj Barjatya took the name of Rajshri back to its heights, he came out with another movie that was one of the biggest hits that Bollywood has ever seen. The movie took most of the successful cast from 'Maine Pyaar Kiya', subtracted Bhagyashree, and added the box-office appeal of Madhuri Dixit, took the story of a Bhojpuri movie starring Sachin 'Nadiya Ke Paar' and made that into a movie that was a full family entertainer. It was about as far from a thriller as you can have, with nary a villain in the entire movie.
The movie was styled to appeal to the family goer, with many songs (14 songs), with all the pomp and show involved in family functions and marriages. You have devotion to parents, brotherly devotion, and a love story running through the movie that is ready for the ultimate sacrifice for the sake of family. In fact, in Britain, cynical commentators took the English movie name 'Four Weddings and Funeral' starring Hugh Grant, and applied a derivative of that name, 'Fourteen Songs and 2 Weddings' to the Hindi movie. That seems to fit the movie pretty well.

Hum Aapke Hain Kaun

The movie is about a joint family, with Alok Nath being the head of the family, his wife having died earlier. He has 2 sons, Mohnish Behl being the elder and more serious (and involved in the family business) and Salman Khan being the younger and more mischievous and carefree (but still committed to the family). Trying to arrange for Mohnish Behl's marriage, Alok Nath runs into an old friend Anupam Kher and his wife Reema Lagoo who have 2 daughters Renuka Shahne and Madhuri Dixit.
Mohnish Behl and Renuka Shahne both get attracted towards each other, and a grand wedding is planned. During this process, Salman Khan and Madhuri Dixit also feel attracted towards each other, and slowly fall for each other. There are other family friends who are part of the whole household, such as Bindu, Ajit Vachani, Satish Shah, the late Laxmikant Berde who all play smaller roles in the movie.
As the younger couple move towards each other, there is a big news in the offing; Renuka Shahne is pregnant and delivers a bright bonny son. They tell her the news, but unfortunately she has a bad fall and dies. Amidst and gloom and tragedy, there are plans to get Madhuri Dixit to marry Mohnish so as that the baby can get proper care. Salman Khan accepts this sacrifice as part of the family need, but seems like fate has something else to say.
Music of the movie was great, with music by Ram Laxman.

Lyrics for the movie:

Didi Tera Dewar Diwana

Didi Tera Devar Deewana,
Hai Ram, Kudiyon Ko Daale Daana,
Dhandha Hai Yeh Uska Puraana,
Hai Ram, Kudiyon Ko Daale Daana.

Main Boli Ke Laana Tu Imli Ka Daana,
Magar Woh Chuaare Le Aaya Deewana,
Main Boli Ke Machle Hai Dil Mera Haay,
Woh Kharbuja Laaya Jo Neembu Mangaaya,
Pagla Hai Koi Usko Bataana,
Hai Ram, Kudiyon Ko Daale Daana.

Main Boli Ke Laana Tu Mitti Pahaadi,
Magar Woh Bataashe Le Aaya Anaadi,
Main Boli Thi La Do Mujhe Tu Khataayi,
Woh Baazar Se Le Ke Aaya Mithaai,
Mushkil Hai Yuh Mujhko Phasaana,
Hai Ram, Kudiyon Ko Daale Daana.

Bhabhi Teri Behna Ko Maana,
Hai Ram, Kudiyon Ka Hai Zamaana,
Rabba Mere Mujhko Bachaana,
Hai Ram, Kudiyon Ka Hai Zamaana.

Hukum Aapka Tha Jo Maine Na Maana,
Khatavaar Hoon Main Na Aaya Nibhaana,
Sazaa Jo Bhi Doge Woh Manzoor Hogi,
Aji Meri Mushkil Tabhi Door Hogi,
Bandaa Hai Yeh Khudse Begaana,
Hai Ram, Kudiyon Ka Hai Zamaana.

Khud Ko Sanam: Roka Bada
Aakhir Mujhe: Kehna Pada
Khwabon Mein Tum: Aate Ho Kyon
Hum Aapke...Aapke Hain Koun..!

Bechain Hai - Meri Nazar: Hai Pyar Ka - Kaisa Asar
Hain Hosh Gum: Poocho Na Tum
Hum Aapke...Aapke Hain Koun..!

Kaise Kahun: Dil Ki Lagi
Chehra Mera: Padh Lo Kabhi
Yeh Sharam Ki: Surkhi Kahe
Hum Aapke...Aapke Hain Koun..!

Mausam Ka Jaadu

Thandi Thandi Purvaiya Mein
Udti Hai Chunariya, Hey
Dhadke Mora Jiya Rama
Bali Hai Umariya
Dil Pe, Nahin Kaabu,
Kaisa, Yeh Jaadu

Yeh Mausam Ka Jaadu Hai Mitwa
Na Ab Dil Pe Kaabu Hai Mitwa
Naina Jisme Kho Gaye
Deewane Se Ho Gaye
Nazara Woh Harsu Hai Mitwa
Yeh Mausam Ka Jaadu Hai Mitwa...

Shehri Babu Ke Sang
Mem Gori Gori, Hey
Aise Lage Jaise
Chanda Ki Chakori

Phoolon Kaliyon Ki Bahaaren
Chanchal Yeh Hawaon Ki Pukaaren

Humko Yeh Ishaaron Mein Kahen Hum
Thamke Yahan Ghadiyan Guzaaren

Pehle Kabhi To Na Humse
Batiyate The Aise Phulwa

Yeh Mausam Ka Jaadu Hai Mitwa...

Sachchi Sachchi Bolna
Bhed Na Chupaana, Hey
Kaun Dagar Se Aaye
Kaun Disha Hai Jaana

Inko Hum Le Ke Chale Hain
Apne Sang Apni Nagariya

Hai Re Sang Anjaane Ka
Us Par Anjaan Dagariya

Phir Kaise Tum Door Itne
Sang Aa Gayee Mere Goriya

Yeh Mausam Ka Jaadu Hai Mitwa

Mujhse Juda Hokar

Mujhse Juda Hokar Tumhe Door Jaana Hai
Palbhar Ki Judaai Phir Laut Aana Hai
Saathiya - Sang Rahega Tera Pyar
Saathiya - Rang Layega Intezaar..!

Tumse Juda Hokar Mujhe Door Jaana Hai
Palbhar Ki Judaai Phir Laut Aana Hai
Saathiya - Sang Rahega Tera Pyar
Saathiya - Rang Layega Intezaar..!

Main Hoon Teri Sajni Saajan Hai Tu Mera
Tu Baandh Ke Aaya Mere Pyar Ka Sehra
Chehre Se Ab Tere Hatti Nahin Ankhiyan
Tera Naam Le - Lekar Chhede Mujhe Sakhiyan
Sakhiyon Se Ab Mujhko Peechha Chhudana Hai
Palbhar Ki Judaai Phir Laut Aana Hai
Saathiya - Sang Rahega Tera Pyar
Saathiya - Rang Layega Intezaar..!

Mere Tasavvur Mein Tum Roz Aati Ho
Chupke Se Tum Aakar Mera Ghar Sajati Ho
Sajni Bada Pyara Yeh Roop Hai Tera
Gajre Ki Khushboo Se Mehka Hai Ghar Mera
Aankhon Se Ab Teri Kajal Churana Hai
Palbhar Ki Judaai Phir Laut Aana Hai
Saathiya - Sang Rahega Tera Pyar
Saathiya - Rang Layega Intezaar..!

Pehla Pehla Pyaar Hain

Pehla Pehla Pyar Hai
Pehli Pehli Baar Hai
Jaan Ke Bhi Anjaana
Kaisa Mera Yaar Hai...

Uski Nazar
Palkon Ki Chilman Se Mujhe Dekhti Uski Nazar Uski Haya
Apni Hi Chahat Ka Raaz Kholti Uski Haya
Chhup Ke Kare Jo Wafa, Aisa Mera Yaar Hai
Pehla Pehla Pyar Hai...

Wo Hai Nisha
Wo Hi Meri Zindagi Ki Bhor Hai Wo Hai Nisha Use Hai Pata
Uske Hi Hathon Mein Meri Dor Hai Use Hai Pata
Saare Jahan Se Juda, Aisa Mera Pyar Hai
Pehla Pehla Pyar Hai...

Jogan Ho Gai Teri Dulaari
Man Jogi Sung Laaga..!
