Jis Desh Mein Ganga Behti Hain (1960)

An almost magical movie from Raj Kapoor, it seems a very simplistic movie. In these cynical times, you would think that such a thing is impossible. However, the fact is that in reality, Acharya Vinoba Bhave did indeed cause dacoits to see the error of their ways and surrender. The movie portrays Raj Kapoor as a very simple man, not used to the complication of life, not very clever; but very honest, very much in love with the country and the fact that humans are not bad, and if they are acting wrongly, they can be shown the error of their ways and come to the right track.
The movie was released in 1960, and was a big hit. It was directed by Radhu Karmakar under the banner of R.K.Films and also starred Padmini, Pran, and Lalita Pawar. The music was by Shankar Jaikishan and the songs were a great hit. The movie won the Filmfare Award for Best Movie in 1961, and perpetuated Raj Kapoor's image as the simple, uncomplicated, not calculating film persona that he had been carrying along since Awaara and Shree 420.

Jis Desh Mein Ganga Behti Hain

The movie stars a group of dacoits living with their families away from civilization, much hunted by the police. They are naturally suspicious of most things, and fear coming into contact with the police. One day, by accident Raju (Raj Kapoor) lands in their midst and only the sardar manages to save him, since the others suspect him to be policeman. Pran is the rebellious second in command and does not like Raj Kapoor.
Over a period of time, Padmini develops a liking for the simple ways of Raj Kapoor and falls in love with him further enraging Pran who had always thought that he would marry Padmini. Raj Kapoor somehow does not ever seem like becoming a dacoit and is mocked by the others for his seemingly gentle manners and lack of toughness, although many of the people start liking him.
Things take a sudden turn for the worse when the sardar is killed and Raj Kapoor admits that he is a policeman (even though he is not) and is imprisoned by Pran for eventually being killed. Padmini goes off to get the police, and at the same time, Pran kills one of the elder females (Lalita Pawar) by mistake when Raj Kapoor is persuading the other dacoits to surrender; they are after living a life of nomads and not being able to bring up their families properly. They set out to surrender and at the same time the police has assembled a huge force to capture them. There is a confrontation where Pran almost manages to have a shootout, but Raj Kapoor manages to save the day and prevent any bloodshed.
The depiction of the lives of the dacoits seems very realistic; I was also very impressed by the sets in the closing scene where the shooting was done in a very large partly hilly space, and you get a feeling of incredible vastness and a massive number of people assembling for a confrontation.

Hum Kisi Se kam Nahin: The Nasir Hussain movie

This movie was released in 1977, and was at a time when Rishi Kapoor was on a roll as the singing and dancing star. Directed by Nasir Hussain under his home banner (Nasir Hussain films), the movie was a great musical entertainer, a proper masala movie. It had all the elements - lost diamonds, gangsters along with henchmen, lots of music, separation and then meeting, debut of a new couple, and so on. It was a great hit, probably the last great hit for Nasir Hussain Films before the hit 'Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak'. Nasir Hussain unfortunately died in 2002.
The movie had music direction by R.D.Burman, and lyrics by Majrooh Sultanpuri. This was actually a great combination that had given some great music earlier in movies such as Teesri Manzil, Pyar Ka Mausam, Caravan, Yaadon Ki Baraat before this movie. The fim starred the hit Rishi Kapoor, Zeenat Aman (in a small role), and the debut of Tariq and Kaajal Kiran (both of whom unfortunately did not achieve great success), and Amjad Khan.
The movie was about a young couple growing up as kids (Tariq and Kaajal Kiran) who get separated when their fathers, who are friends, part ways, with Kaajal's father turning rich and looking down upon Taariq's father. They are now separated, with no idea of each other. Tariq is a good singer, and one day, somebody places some diamonds in the box of his bike in order to escape the police. Amjad Khan wants the diamonds, and believes that Kaajal Kiran's father knows where the diamonds are.
Rishi loves Zeenat, but her father thinks no good of him, and refuses to let their affair go ahead. At some point, Rishi starts believing that Zeenat is now married off and is heart-broken.
He is then blackmailed by Amjad Khan (with Rishi's sister being the method of him getting blackmailed) to romance Kaajal Kiran and lure her so that the diamonds can be found. He is supposed to be at a villa in the countryside where Kaajal will meet him, but Rishi sends Tariq ahead of him. Tariq recognizes Kaajal and romances her, pretending to be Rishi. She does not know him. When she finds out, she rejects him, at which point Tariq sings the song 'Kya Hua Tera Vaada' (song by Rafi in an award winning style) and Kaajal now knows who he is. She is very depressed now that she regrets how she treated Tariq.
With some more melodrama and some shooting later, everything turns out for the better. And in a unnecessary twist, Rishi finds out that Zeenat was not married and was waiting for him.

Dhamaal: A fun filled movie

This review of the movie will essentially have the story as well, so at any point if you think that your surprise element of the movie is getting spoiled, stop reading at that point of time.
Dhamaal, a name for a comedy. So off I went into the theater, thinking that with the spate of comedies that we have seen recently and with many of them being somewhat ribald and raunchy, there would be a spate of heroines with short hemlines and lots of skin display; I was pleasantly surprised. This was a pretty clean movie from the context of double meaning dialogues as well, a good family movie.
It's a different matter that the opinion of this sort of movie varies a lot. I know a lot of people who would consider the spate of incidents and accidents that befall the characters in this movie as contrived and not worth laughing at; I however am not one of them. I enjoyed the movie and laughed with everybody else in the hall at the continuous spate of humorous incidents that happen in the movie.
Dhamaal: A fun filled movie

The movie stars a number of people some of whom are good in comedy, some of whom make people laugh with their deadpan style of dialogue delivery. Sanjay Dutt is an excellent example of a person who delivers his style and dialogues in a pure deadpan way, and the humour stands out. Javed Jafferey is styled as a dim-wit, the brother of Arshad Warsi, and Javed stands out in his role of a person who cannot be trusted to keep a secret or know what to say when, and by the end of the movie, you know that he can counted upon to reveal things which would rather not be disclosed. Riteish Deshmukh as usual is a character who emotes humour with his face and eyes, and he does a fair job at that. Arshad Warsi is seemingly the most ruthless of the lot in terms of planning. And then there is Ashish Choudhury, who is utterly scared of his father Asrani, who loves his car more than he loves Ashish.
With these cast of characters, you know that the movie will have a riot of incidents one after the other, and that is exactly what happens. These 4, Ashish, Javed, Arshad and Riteish are good for nothing characters, not working and enjoying from day to day based on their skills at conning people. Once, when conning the family of a dead person, they are wrongly picked up by a cop for murder, but then released on a mountain road when the truth becomes clear. There they watch an accident, and hear the last words of a crook, Bose (Prem Chopra) who tells them where his money is buried in Goa.
When Tikku Talsania (the police chief) and Sanjay Dutt (a police inspector) hear about this, they are shocked. They have been chasing Bose for 10 years and want to get back the money he had made. Sanjay Dutt eventually makes the 4 reveal the money details that Bose had told them (with Javed playing the dimwit revealing the details). Soon, they all part acrimoniously to go their own separate ways over the proposed division of the money. This is soon shown figuratively in the way that they try to be the first one and kill the other's chance of doing so.
What follows is the attempts of all of them to be the first one to reach Goa and the incidents that they have in the process. There are some notable ones, with Ashish and Asrani in a plane where the pilot has become unconscious and the attempt to get them down, Sanjay Dutt driving a bus that soon leads him hanging from a cliff, Ritesh getting stuck with some dacoits the leader of whom becomes part of the party, and so on. The end has a twist in terms of what happens when they finally find the money.

Delightful Movie: Jhankaar Beats

This movie was incredible. A movie seemingly made specifically for the urban audience, it seemed to have hit its target bang-on. The theme, the language used in the movie (with lots of English thrown in), the pressure of relationships, and the somewhat distant and formal relationship between a father and his son, all of these are items that would appeal to the urban / metro audience.
I normally watch the movie when it appears on TV and have done so for quite a while, and I really enjoy it. Given that I really appreciate the music by R.D.Burman, watching a movie that dedicates itself to his memory was a good effect (although the cynical me says that this was just part of the storyline and no special affection to R.D.Burman). So, songs from old were a good thought. The movie was one of the first movie from Pritish Nandy communications, and I would think that they did good.

Jhankaar Beats

The movie did not have many big stars, having Juhi Chawla (but after she had sort of moved away from bigger roles and into more quality roles after her family started), Sanjay Suri, the metro-sexual Rahul Bose, Rinke Khanna, the much-criticized witness in the Jessica Lal case Shyan Munshi, Riya Sen, and Vijayendra Ghatge. Juhi Chawla and Sanjay Suri are a couple with a school-going daughter and another kid on the way; Rahul Bose and Rinke Khanna are a couple on the verge of splitting enough though it seems that they do care for each other; and Shyan Munshi and Riya Sen are a wannabe couple (although Riya Sen does not know it as yet).
Sanjay Suri and Rahul Bose are working with a ad agency and have a regular delighful banter going on. They are also heavily devoted towards practising for and winning a local musical contest called Jhankar Beats that they have been trying for 2 years now and missing. Their wives understand their obsession but do not fully share it.
In the midst of all this, their boss gives them a new campaign, they have to design a new campaign for a client wanting to introduce a new condom in the market. He also pushes his son Neel (Shyan Munshi) into working with them, although just because he is the son does not mean that he gets any special flavors. Neel is also a wannabe musician whom they accept as part of their group.
And then the movie moves on from there, with Neel trying to win over Riya Sen (and succeeding without too much effort), Rahul Bose trying to resolve his relationship with Rinke Khanna (and we never really get to know the reason behind why they are separated, but primarily seems a question of egos), and the whole set meandering towards trying to win the ad contract (and keep their jobs). The movie does get a bit serious towards the end, but overall is a very nice movie.

Song and remix: Bhor Gaye Panghat

This is a beautiful song from the movie Satyam Shivam Sundaram. Listen to the music, and listen to the song sung by Lata Mangeshkar. Satyam Shivam Sundaram was controversial due to the amount of exposure by Zeenat Aman, but the movie had some great songs. The movie also starred Shashi Kapoor and was made in 1978 by Raj Kapoor. The music was directed by Laxmikant Pyarelal.
The story is about a simple village girl who sings in the village temple, and is very attractive. She is a very god-fearing. Further, she has a side of her face totally burnt. Shashi Kapoor into the village, and he falls for her and asks for her hand in marriage. She refuses initially since she knows that once he sees the burnt side of her face, he will be repulsed, but due to pressure, she gives in. The obvious happens when Shashi Kapoor sees her burnt part of face and rejects her. Eventually, he has a change in heart after a major storm and flooding and accepts her.
The song also has had a recent remixed video starring Isha Koppikar (who debuted in the great song Khallas from the movie Company).

Original song:

New remix starring Isha Koppikar (called Bhor Project):

Lyrics of the original song:

(bhor bhaye panghat pe
mohe natkhat shaam sataye) - 2

Song: Krishna O Krishna

Okay, today's song will seem a bit unfamiliar, given that it is from a movie called 'Meera Ka Mohan' released in 1992, and starring Avinash Wadhawan, Ashwini Bhave, Kunika, Deepak Saraf, and a few others. It was not a very notable movie, having been made by K. Ravishankar. The music was given by the late Arun Paudwal and the lyrics were by Indivar. This song was sung by Anuradha Paudwal and Kumar Sanu.

Lyrics:

krishna krishna krishna
krishna hare krishna
krishna raadhe krishna
o krishna you are the greatest musician of this world
o krishna kyuun vaada de ke refusion of the world

baansuri se tuune prem sandesha diya hai mohana

tuune jo bhi git sunaaya gita ban ke jag pe chhaaya
gyaan ka man mein dip jalaaya
tuune hi sab ko lubhaaya aur sab ko nachaaya
pyaar ko tuune kiya hai paavan har insaan ko diya hai jivan
har aangan mein raadha mohan
tuune hi jag ko amar sangit sunaaya

Song: Ek Tu Hi Bharosa

If you are a great fan of Lata Mangeshkar's voice, then you will love this song. And from what I know, I don't believe that Lata Mangeshkar appears in films to sing a song, and she has done it for this song. This song really appeals to me, the lyrics go right down to my core. It gives hope, and a feeling of being able to overcome against all hands, if you have faith in God. The lyrics are by Majrooh Sultanpuri and Javed Akhtar, and the music is by A.R. Rehman, and they have really excelled.
The movie is Pukaar, released in 2000, and directed by Rajkumar Santoshi. It stars Anil Kapoor, Madhuri Dixit, Namrata Shirodkar, Danny. The movie is essentially about this heroic Army Major who does a lot of good deeds, and is then framed by Madhuri (almost by mistake) as she grows very jealous when she seems him having an affair with Namrata). He is condemned as a traitor, dishonored and jailed. The rest of the movie is how he manages to get his honor back as well as save a number of children.

Lyrics:

--FEMALE--

Jeevan mein sukoon chaahe, chaahat mein vafa maange

Chak De India: A pretty interesting movie

The last movie of Shahrukh Khan before this that I knew about was 'Kabhi Alvida Na Kahna', and I did not watch it. Given that it was a Karan Johar movie, it was pretty unlikely that I would have considered the movie any different from the regular emotion drama; and even though the movie was somewhat different from his usual theme, covering the topic of marital and extra-marital relationships, I could not force myself to see it.
So it was with some trepidation that I went ahead to watch Chak De India; I had already heard that it was a good movie, but most people who had seen it had told me that it was essentially about hockey and the patriotism inherent in the country winning a major tournament, and there was the fear that it would turn out to be a movie steeped in patriotism, with players being urged to play for country and honour, and getting the feel-good feeling. It was all this to some extent, but in a vastly well scripted way, something that cheered you up. And frankly, I did not expect either Yash Raj Films or Aditya Chopra to make a movie that did not have a single decent song, or a romantic liasion, and I was proved wrong.
Chak De succeeds at many levels, it takes a person with all his reasons for doing what he is doing and does not try to air-brush those reasons or cloak them under a sentimental way. It also tries to show the reality of the game and conditions, when compared against the immense money involved in something called cricket that is a national obsession. It also shows our current administrators of sports and how they are singularly unfit to run something like this, it is only when you get dedicated people to run things that you get results.
Chak De is the story of the former ace of the Indian men's team, Kabir Khan (based on an actual player, Mir Ranjan Negi), who fluffs the victory chance in the dying moments and gets stampeded out of public acclaim by the combined might of the media looking for a sensational story (how his post-game handshake with the Pakistani team was actually a proof of his sell-out) and fans willing to believe the worst from their players who lost. It comes to a stage where he is labelled a traitor and his neighbors also do not believe him even when he leaves his house.
Cut to 7 years later, the World Cup for Women's hockey is in 3 months, and the team does not have a coach, with the association not being very concerned. It is one concerned person who forces them to consider Kabir Khan (now with a beard) as the coach, but most people consider it an attempt by him to re-build his reputation (and interestingly enough, this notion is never convincingly denied by him in the movie).
So Shahrukh Khan is now the new coach of the Indian Women's Hockey team, all ready to try and take a team made up of people who have never played together as a team and who come with their own agendas, biases, and airs. For example, there is the most experienced player in the team, Bindiya Naik, who considers herself as knowing everything and superior to most, and gets shocked when the coach treats her like anybody else.
They all come in with their own stories, with family members who are uncomfortable with them doing this playing, but who have grudgingly agreed to let them attend this camp. There is a nice scene (it could have been very cheesy) where Shahrukh Khan makes them repeat their introduction till they have introduced themselves as playing for India and not their respective states. How he inculcates in them a fighting spirit, a camaraderie, and a toughness forms a major section of the movie. He succeeds to some extent, although there comes a stage when they all revolt against him, and he resigns. The scene to resolve that issue where they fight as one against some teasing boys is slightly corny, but the message was conveyed.
And then how he overcomes the various challenges, including a time when the association does not want to send them. He proposes a match between the Men's and the Women's team, where they get riled up over some comments made about their abilities. However, I consider it a master-piece where they lose the match, but are saved by the appreciation of the men's team. Finally, they are on the way, and are roundly thrashed by Australia in the 1st match, 7-0. They learn, including the Punjabi girl learning to control her temper, and eventually start making their way up and winning hearts and fans. Finally they win, which you knew was going to happen, but the skill they show and the final dropping of egos in order to go this was excellent.
The movie was overall very good, challenged by my spouse to point out some bad points, I could not mention many excellent that the film was to some extent a case of pop patriotism, and it seems a bit unrealistic to show a raw team coming together to become a world champion in 3 months. Overall, the girls impress, Shahrukh impresses, and the few other characters also fairly impress. One interesting titbit is that I don't think that Shahrukhs has ever played a Muslim in a movie before (I may be wrong, but this is my impression).

Songs: From the Jackie Shroff Movie 'Gardish'

In 1993, Priyadarshan made a movie called Gardish that starred the cast of Jackie Shroff, Amrish Puri, Dimple Kapadia, and Aishwarya (a different one). The movie was a remake of the 1989 Malayalam blockbuster, Kireedam. It provided Jackie Shroff a good platform with a very strong role, that caused him to display a lot of emotions. In my opinion, he did a very good role. Music Director was R D Burman, and lyrics were by Javed Akhtar.
The role was simple, he did the role of the son of a police constable (Amrish Puri), and his father wants him to join the police force as an inspector. One of the requirements is that he should not have a case against him. One day, Jackie finds his father being beaten up by the local goonda Mukesh Rishi, and intervenes. Even though he does not want it, he gets a reputation of being the goonda, and soon his father throws him out of the house. He is very desperate, and in great despair. At this time, his lady love also gets married and Dimple gives him some support.
The climax of the movie is when his sister gets kidnapped by Mukesh Rishi, and then his father delivers him to Mukesh Rishi and tells Jackie not to fight back. However, as Jackie is getting beaten to a pulp, his father is unable to take it and tells him to fight back. Jackie fights back and eventually kills him. At this stage, he confronts his father as to when Amrish Puri could not take Jackie getting beaten, how could Jackie earlier take Amrish Puri getting beaten. He is taken away by the police, his dreams in tatters.

Song: Yeh Mera Dil to Pagal Hain

Madhumati: A great movie with some wonderful music

In the 1950's, the pairing of Dilip Kumar and Vyjanthimala starred in a number of extremely successful movies, many of them classics. Some of them were: Bimal Roy's Devdas, B.R.Chopra's Naya Daur, Nitin Bose's Ganga Jamuna, and Bimal Roy's Madhumati. Madhumati was released in 1958, and won a number of awards for that year:
Filmfare Awards for Best Movie, Best Director (Bimal Roy), Best Actress (Vyjayanthimala), Best Music Director (Salil Choudhury), Best Supporting Actor (Johnny Walker), Best Art Direction, Best Female Playback (Lata Mangeshkar singing "aa ja re pardesiya"), Best Editing (Hrishikesh Mukherjee), and Best Dialogue (Rajinder Singh Bedi). With these number of awards, you can imagine what an impact the movie had.
And the surprising part about all this was that the movie was probably the most commercial movie that Bimal Roy had ever made. It was without doubt one of the most commerically successful movies that Bimal Roy had made, but Bimal Roy was more famous for making his social upliftment movie, with the most famous being Bandini, Sujata, Devdas, Do Bigha Zameen. Just a look at some of these movies can show you that these were some of the movies that made the 1950's the era of socially hard-hitting movies; where some of the romance of India's independence had gone away to be replaced by a much harder look at the state of India's society.
Madhumati
The movie had all the elements of a movie that was made for commercial success, it had a villain that you could hate from the depths of your heart Ugranaryan (Pran), a comic star (Johnny Walker), a dashing young hero who pines away for his departed love (Dilip Kumar), some incredible songs, a story dealing with reincarnation, with revenge and a person looking exactly like a twin (if you put all these elements into a modern movie, you can make a movie exactly like the movies you make today). The difference, and what makes this movie an incredible movie, is the direction of Bimal Roy. The movie has an incredible look and feel, and it helps that the lead cast of Dilip Kumar, Vyjanthimala and Pran gave some very good performances. Bimal Roy gives this film a spooky look with some effective use of fogs, mist and a storyline that dances between the real world and the supernatural.
Imagine a horror movie where 2 friends are stuck in the middle of nowhere in a storm after their car breaks down. They approach an old haveli (mansion) and decide to spend the night over there, and the door opens on its own; but wait, this is where the horror story ends. Inside, Dilip Kumar suddenly starts remembering what has happened in his previous birth, and it is connected to this place. A voice starts sounding all around him, “Aaja re pardesi, Main to kab se khadi is paar”. And then he starts recounting the story of his previous life.
And so the story goes, .. Dilip Kumar starts working as the manager of a timber firm, and his boss is Pran. The two don't get along well, since Dilip Kumar is not as respectful of what Pran wants. In the same area lives Vyjanthimala, innocent in the true sense. She is totally care-free, one with nature, close to birds, and also incredibly beautiful. They fall in love, although Madhumati (Vyjanthimala) is also desired by Pran, and since Pran does not like Anand (Dilip Kumar), he has an added interest in getting her to himself. In the meantime, Anand has met her father and assured him that he will marry Madhumati.
And then the pivotal theme, where Anand and Madhumati's father have to go out of the village, and then Pran traps Madhumati in the haveli. She is trying to run, but cannot get out, and then runs into a corridor, and ... then the scene ends. When Anand comes back, he confronts Pran, but does not get anything other than a beating. When wandering as a tragic lost lover, he comes across Madhavi, an exact double of Madhumati. She is a friendly sort, and when he lays out his story, she agrees to help him in getting revenge and getting Pran arrested.
So, they lay out a plan where Madhavi will approach Pran in the form of Madhumati, with the feeling that this will scare Pran into admitting his mis-deeds and get punishment. Plan goes spectacularly well, and Madhavi scares Pran into admitting his deeds (and it is also revealed that Madhumati had committed suicide to save her honor). And then the twist, at this point Madhavi comes and says that she got late, so who was the Madhavi who made Pran confess ?
The music of this film was great, so am attaching the songs below:

Madhumati - Suhana Safar

Madhumati - Jungle mein more nacha

Madhumati - Aaja re pardesi

Madhumati - Dil tadap tadap

Madhumati - Bichhwa

Madhumati - Zulmi sang aankh ladi

Madhumati - Ghadi ghadi mora dil

Heyy Baby: Will appeal to some

To be truly honest, I had gone to watch Chak de India, but the only tickets available were the ones where your nose touch the screen, so saw that there was more space available for this movie, and went ahead and booked tickets. I was a bit apprehensive, after all, there was already 'Three Men and a Baby' and this must be another rip-off. Now Sajjid Khan is a humorous character, but people even bigger than him have directed absolute duds. So, went in armed with some cold drink and popcorn, and made a pact with the spouse that if either of us sleeps, the other one will wake the sleepy one up.
The movie is essentially about these 3 guys, Akshay Kumar as Aroush, Ritesh Deshmukh as Tanmay, and Fardeen Khan as Ali / Al. Supporting them is Boman Irani as the baby's grandfather (and apparently a very rich man whose daughter does not listen to him), and Vidya Balan as Esha. Shahrukh Khan also makes a guest appearance (could not figure out the reason since he does nothing of any worth in his guest appearance).
These 3 guys all live in Sydney in Australia, live in the same apartment, and work in some way. Their other objective in life is to enjoy girls, with no strings attached, no loyalty and certainly no emotional attachment. Anything goes.
And then their past catches up with them, when a baby is left on their doorstep. They panic, since they have absolutely no idea as to how to handle a baby. Eventually, they figure out what to do with regarding to feeding and nappy changing, although there are a lot of hilarious scenes when they are doing this learning process. But having a baby in the house means that the schedule now belongs to the baby, not their own desires anymore.
They do develop some sort of attachment to the baby, but it all breaks down when they all have important appointments the next day, and because of lack of sleep, all of them either get kicked out or suffer great financial loss. This causes them in a rage to leave the baby outside a church, but suffer pangs of guilt when it rains. They go back for the baby, and find it motionless. In hospital, the baby recovers, but only after the doctor declares it a miracle, and with this, overnight they have a change of heart and become dedicated pseudo-dads (I think this was an overkill, since these 3 discussion how their Angel will not have boyfriends when they grow up sounds a bit far-fetched).
Anyhow, they become perfect carers, but get a shock one day when suddenly Vidya Balan (looking all serious and harsh - did not seem natural) turns up and takes the baby back. Then the story is revealed as to how Akshay played with her emotions to bed her, and she now despises him.
Akshay tries a reconciliation with the help of Boman Irani, but Vidya Balan is unmoved. They agree that if Vidya can find a good husband in 7 days, Akshay will drop out, otherwise drop in. (I am not sure whether such a thing will be legally enforceable or not). Anyhow Akshay plans to get his 2 friends to do the serenading so that the 7 days end and then she has no choice. There are a lot of emotions in play here, but somehow these 3 guys being all emotional rings not so true.
Anyhow, these 2 guys go ahead one by one (with one memorable scene where when Akshay tells Fardeen to go slow, he actually drives the car very slow, slower than walking speed, with a absolutely stupid look on his face). The movie feels a bit stretched at this point, and I did not laugh as much. In fact, it sounded stupid sometimes when they appear in disguise in front of her and she is not able to recognize him. Anyhow, in the end, she likes the way he is willing to let her go if it is in her own good, and after a bit of torture, comes back to her. And surprise, surprise, he had fallen in love with her.
Akshay is okay, Ritesh is great, Fardeen is too flabby (he should lose weight). Vidya Balan somehow was not as impressive, maybe because she cannot seem to carry off a angry persona that easily (and for this movie, she was required to be angry almost the whole time in Australia). This movie will appeal to some, while other will find it plain boring and with bad humour.

Song: Rajnigandha Phool Tumhare

This is an extremely beautiful song, I can just sit in front of the TV or radio when it comes and just relax and enjoy the melody. It is the title song of the movie called Rajnigandha released in 1974 and directed by Basu Chatterjee. It starred Amol Palekar, Vidya Sinha and Dinesh Thakur in the leading roles. "Rajnigandha" won the Best Picture at the Filmfare Awards in the year 1974, both the Popular Award and the Critics Award.
The song was sung by Lata Mangeshkar and music was by Salil Choudhury. The movie was different from the big budget movies that were released around the same time and was about a lady falling in love with a person, and then meeting an old boy-friend who is the direct opposite of her fiancee. She always had a soft corner for him and now has to decide between the two. It is a difficult choice since she had always loved the first one, but he never could get the courage to tell her, and in the end, still does not tell her. This is a nice movie, and would be good to watch this along with another movie starring Amol Palekar and Vidya Sinha (Choti Si Baat), which is also a delightful movie.

Lyrics:

kitanaa sukh hain bandhan mein

har pal meree in aakhon mein bas rahate hain sapane un ke

Song: Tu Pyaar Ka Sagar Hain

If you have ever watched Balraj Sahni in a movie, then you would appreciate this movie and this song. Starring Balraj Sahni and Nutan, the movie is an excellent movie from the Black and White era. The movie has Music by Shankar Jaikishen and is directed by Amiya Chakrabarty (who unfortunately passed away only 2 years after making this movie). This song was sung by Manna Dey.
Seema is a movie that has some incredible performances by Nutan and Balraj Sahni. Nutan plays the orphan who was ill-treated in her uncle and aunt's house, and then framed for a theft. After a series of escapes and captures, she is finally sent to a reformatory run by Balraj Sahni. She is also proved innocent, and the movie is about how she overcomes her rebellious attitude and settles down to a more calmer personality. In the end, when she is free to go, she opts to stay with Balraj Sahni who had suffered a heart attack.

Song: Tere Bina Zindagi Se

This is one of my all time favorites. Such a delightful melodious song, and featuring Sanjeev Kumar, who is also one of my all time favorite actors. The movie was Aandhi, starring primarily Sanjeev Kumar and Suchitra Sen and made in 1975 with direction by Gulzar and produced by Om Prakash J. The movie was very controversial, because the theme of the movie - an aspiring lady politician who sacrifices everything (including husband and child) for politics and fame, and even when she regains them and has genuine happiness, she still uses the occasion to make political points over her opponents seemed very close to Indira Gandhi's life. If you have not seen the movie, you really should.
The song was sung by Kishore Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar and is a must hear. If you are fond of melodious songs, you need to have this in your collection. The music was directed by RD Burman and lyrics were by Gulzaar.

Lyrics:

Tere bina zindagi se koyi, shikwa, to nahi, shikwa nahi, shikwa nahi, shikwa nahi
Tere bina zindagi bhi lekin, zindagi, to nahi, zindagi nahi, zindagi nahi, zindagi nahi
Tere bina zindagi se koyi, shikwa, to nahi

Kaash aisa ho tere qadmo se, chun ke manzil chale aur kahi door kahi - 2
Tum gar saath ho, manzilo ki kami to nahi
Tere bina zindagi se koyi, shikwa, to nahi

Jee mein aata hai, tere daaman mein, sar jhuka ke ham rote rahe, rote rahe - 2
Teri bhi aankho mein, aansuo ki nami to nahi

Tere bina zindagi se koyi, shikwa, to nahi,
shikwa nahi, shikwa nahi, shikwa nahi
Tere bina zindagi bhi lekin, zindagi, to nahi,
zindagi nahi, zindagi nahi, zindagi nahi

Tum jo keh do to aaj ki raat, chaand doobega nahi, raat ko rok lo -2
Raat ki baat hai, aur zindagi baaki to nahi

Tere bina zindagi se koyi, shikwa, to nahi,
shikwa nahi, shikwa nahi, shikwa nahi
Tere bina zindagi bhi lekin, zindagi, to nahi,
zindagi nahi, zindagi nahi, zindagi nahi

Main Hoon Na: A pure masala movie

The movie was an incredibly slick movie, in terms of the fluidity of movement and some of the effects as compared to other Indian movies. And considering that this movie was a directorial debut for Farah Khan, I would rate it as a good effort. Of course, if you are looking for a classic movie, then this one would certainly not be the one for you - the slightly cartoonish depiction of the main villain along with a not enough convicting reason about the reason for his stand, the depiction of a teacher wearing hot and sexy clothers and flaunting her sexuality, the actual relationship between the armyman and his wife son and his other son, all these are more for the masala angle and take away from the classic depiction of the movie.
Also, keep in mind that this is a production of Shahrukh and his wife Gauri Khan, and Shahrukh can be trusted to make sure that the movie is a commercial success. Now, having stated all that, I liked the movie overall, although I don't think about it after having watched the movie. It has a few good songs, and also tries to handle the relationship between a girl pining for her love and he not bothering to acknowledge it. Also, Shahrukh had given interviews earlier about not doing movies that depict enmity with Pakistan, and hence this movie fits perfectly, since it tries to handle a delicate subject about prisoner exchange, and that too, civilian prisoners.
The movie is about the projected decrease of tension between India and Pakistan through a prisoner exchange, with prisoners typically being of the type who strayed into each other's territory and have a family (typically poor) pining for them at home. This is being spear-headed on the Indian army side by the Army Chief (Kabir Bedi). Suniel Shetty is an ex-Army office who believes that a Pakistani cannot be trusted, and this initiation of the prisoner exchange from the Indian side is a sign of weakness. To that end, he is willing to do whatever it takes to wreck the deal, including killing the Army Chief or taking his daughter Sanjana (Amrita Rao) hostage. Sanjana is estranged from her father, but still needs protection although she is not going to appreciate Army protection. An attempt is made on the Army Chief's life during an interview in which his chief protector, Naseruddin Shah (Shahrukh's father) is killed. While dying, he reveals that he had a wife and son who left when the small Shahrukh came on the scene (from an earlier affair). He wants Shahrukh to heal the breach.
So, in a strong coincidence, Sanjana is studying in the same place where Shahrukh's brother is staying, so Major Ram Prasad Sharma (Shahrukh) gets the order to become her guard and basically help her. He makes an excuse to join the college and joins there, but is essentially a misfit because he is older and stiff like an army man. Eventually Sanjana warms up to him when he saves the life of Lucky who Sanjana loves (and who is his younger brother Laxman Prasad Sharma). The Major also falls in love with a new teacher Sushmita Sen and becomes a shy tongue-tied person around her.
The rest of the story is about how he manages to bring Sanjana and Lucky together again, and then overcomes the machinations of Suniel Shetty who is holding all of them hostage. He even does a He-Man, chasing down a vehicle with a rickshaw on which he does a matrix like stunt (looked so funny).

Maine Pyaar Kiya: A super-hit that launched Salman

This was the movie of 1989, and many have called it the movie of the 80's. It was definitely the movie that launched Salman's super-hit career, and if the female lead, Bhagyashree had not got married right away, she would have also had a glorious career in the film industry. There is hard to find anything wrong with this movie, it is a typical masala movie that had all the elements of romance, relationships, betrayal, song and dance, etc.
The movie starts with the close relationship between 2 friends (Alok Nath and Rajeev Verma) who have drifted apart. Alok Nath is a poor hard-working engineer, while Rajeev is now a successful businessman who is floating in money and conscious of his status. While he still recognizes Alok Nath as a friend, there are many distances now between this which Alok Nath does not as yet feel.
Rajeev's only child is Salman Khan (Prem), and Rajeev Verma's friend Ranjeet (Ajit Vachani) has designs on Prem for his daughter. Prem is more a simple kind of person, although he has one hobby of racing, and really likes to race with his father. Prem's mother is a kind and considerate Reema Lagoo. At this time, Alok Nath needs to go abroad and is wondering about where his daughter (Bhagyashree) will stay. He remembers Rajeev and drops her there.
Initially, Bhagyashree is uncomfortable, but Prem and his friend Manohar (the late Laxmikant Berde) do their best to make her feel comfortable (including a cap with the word Friend that became a craze when the movie was released), and she and Prem move closer, not recognizing any love between them.
And then one of the turning points of the movie, where they go for a party where Mohnish Behl is there. There Bhagyashree is taunted about no such thing as a friendship between an adult male and female, and this makes her uncomfortable. Prem realizes that he is in love with her and sets out to win her heart, and does so, to the accompaniment of many beautiful melodious songs (although the tunes of many of them were copied).
But, Ranjeet sets Rajeev against Suman and Rajeev is certainly not approving of Prem marrying a poor girl such as Suman. He is about to turn her out of the house when Alok Nath arrives, and the break between them is complete. Alok Nath is very bitter about this and reacts strongly when Prem appears to claim Bhagyashree. He taunts Prem about earning on his own, and causes Prem to start hard work to prove himself. And from this point on, the story proceeds with a happy ending where Prem and Suman are united and so are their father.
The movie also created a major reputation for Sooraj Barjatya, the silent Barjatya younger generation who went onto to make another mega-hit called Hum Aapke Hain Kaun, and raise the banner of Rajshri Films back up. The movie also had incredible music by Ram Laxman.

Baghban: A very emotional movie

Sometimes you come across a very emotional movie that also seems very realistic. The same is the case with Baghban, where you realize the state of the parents who have been mis-treated by their children, and eventually leave home. However, in the movie, the parents have a partial happy ending, but this is not necessarily true in real life where parents when left by their children do not have any other resort, either willing to live a more depressed way of life, ill-treated by their children, or moving out of the home and moving to an age-old home / shelter. No good choices for them.
The movie is about the concept of a Baghban, a gardener, who plants a tree for the future and nurtures it so that it will give him re-assurance in later life. Same is the case with Raj (Amitabh Bachchan) who lives with his wife (Hema Malini) and their 4 children. Raj has a good life when working, investing heavily into the future of his children and giving them the best, with the expectation that they will take care of him later. In this, he disregards any need for savings, and instead invests even his pension and gratuity. He also takes care of an orphan, Salman Khan, showering him with love as well (and this is where the true of fruits coming later in life show themselves).
And then comes the time when he is about to retire, expecting that his sons will now take care of him and his wife. His sons get to know that he has no savings left, and along with their wives (who are not so considerate about parents either), they are not able to resolve who will take care of their parents; with none of them being very willing to volunteer. They also fear that their separate lives will get disturbed with an elder couple coming to live with them. They finally decide to split their parents, with each parent living in a son's house for 6 months, and then rotating to another son, but not together.
The parents are not very happy at this prospect, but don't have much of a choice. When living in their son's house, they also don't get the kind of respect that they deserve, with incidents such as not sitting at the head of the table, being blamed for revealing a surprise party, letting kids stay out late, and so on. Even in the midst of this, the mother takes a role in saving one of her grand-daughter's modesty at a party.
Finally, at the end of the 6 months, they make an agreement that this is not working, and move away without telling the children. They are concerned about what they will do, and then they start getting some good luck. First, the manager of a hotel where they were earlier there at the inauguration years back gives them respect, then the orphan / adopted son, Salman finds them and takes them to his house (where he is living with his wife Mahima Chaudhary). There they get the respect that they deserve and are looking for.
Finally, a manuscript that Amitabh had written finds its way to a publisher where the publisher's wife reads it and is heavily impressed. The book, about a situation similar to what Raj has gone through, is a best-seller and Amitabh now gets a fair amount of money. His sons finally get to know where Amitabh is, but they are realistic enough to know that Amitabh is not likely to share any of this money with them. At a function where they are also called, Amitabh finally repulses them with the statement that he cannot forgive and forget this utter betrayal that they did.
The movie is a remake of 2 different movies - the Marathi movie 'Tu Thitha Me', meaning Where You Are There I Am, and a National award winning Kannada movie 'Post Master'.
Songs of the movie can be played from this link.

Here is the final speech that Amitabh gives at the function, and it is a very good speech:

Song: Gustakhiyan from Aankhen

This is a very fast and peppy song that somehow does not truly belong to the movie. The movie was Aankhen released in 2002 about Amitabh Bachchan training 3 blind men (Akshay Kumar, Paresh Rawal and Arjun Ramphal) to loot a bank and also starring Susmita Sen as the unwilling trainer. Movie was fairly suspenseful. The song starred Akshay and Bipasha (in a guest role for this song). The movie was directed by Vipul Shah, music was by Aadesh Shrivastav, the song was sung by Aadesh Shrivastava and Vasundhara Das

Lyrics:

Gustakhiyan Hain, Betabiyan Hain, Chaayi Hain Madhoshiyan
Hosh Uda Do, Sab Kuchh Bhula Do, Todo Yeh Khamoshiyan
Yeh Dhadkan Ki Raftaar Hai, Yeh Saason Ka Angaar Hai
Yeh Ishq Sulagne Do Zara, Yeh Chaahat Ka Iqraar Hai
Jaane Jaan Oh Jaane Jaan...

Aawara Armaan Hai, Yeh Dil Ka Aelaan Hai,
Jaan Tujh Pe Qurbaan Hai, Jaanejaan...
Aawara Armaan Hai, Yeh Dil Ka Aelaan Hai,
Jaan Tujh Pe Qurbaan Hai, Jaanejaan...
Ek Hulchul Si Hone Lagi, Maein Jannat Mein Khone Lagi
Mujhko Baahon Mein Thaam Lo, Phir Na Rukne Ka Naam Lo
Gustakhiyan Hain, Betabiyan Hain, Chaayi Hain Madhoshiyan...

Deewarein Sab Tod Do, Mausam Ka Rukh Modh Do
Har Kashti Ko Chhod Do, Jaanejaan Jaanejaan...
Deewarein Sab Tod Do, Mausam Ka Rukh Modh Do
Har Kashti Ko Chhod Do, Jaanejaan Jaanejaan...
Maein Hoon Teri Aagosh Mein, Kuchh Hosh Mein Kuchh Josh Mein
Kuchh Sholay Hain Kuchh Hai Jalan, Kuchh Behke Behke Hain Kadam
Gustakhiyan Hain, Betabiyan Hain, Chaayi Hain Madhoshiyan...
Hasti Mita Do, Masti Luta Do, Chhodo Bhi Yeh Dooriyaan
Yeh Ishq Sulagne Do Zara, Yeh Chaahat Ka Iqraar Hai
Jaane Jaan Oh Jaane Jaan
