Swades - A very watchable movie

Swades, released in 2004, was a much awaited movie. Ever since Lagaan was released in 2001 and its theme of a rural village uniting to fight a foreign oppressor became a hit, there was always the expectation of another movie on a rural theme making it big. And thus when the same director, Ashutosh announced another movie, this one too on a rural theme, there was a great amount of hope that the presence of Shahrukh Khan would make this movie a super-hit as well. However, this was not to be. The movie came, got some good press, got some criticism over its length and the fact the movie seemed to many people too unrealistic, too much like a documentary. Come on, a successful NASA scientist chucking it all away, and then going off to generate electricity almost single-handedly for a rural village. Fiction indeed.

Swades - We the People

The fact remains, Swades is a great movie. The movie has a legend of 'We, the people', and seems to be a labor of love (with the movie having been written, produced and directed by Ashutosh Gowariker). It shows a fair amount of the ills such as lack of knowledge, illiteracy and discrimination that plague our villages. At the same time, it does not present these as obstacles that cannot be overcome (as many other movies do, which try to show conflict as the only way to resolve the problems). The movie has a great romance theme, heavily under-stated with a great new comer performance by Gayatri Joshi. The movie has great music, seemingly very appropriate for the movie theme (Music is by A. R. Rahman, lyrics by Javed Akhtar).
Swades is inspired by a real life NRI couple who returned to India (and who are credited in Swades), and developed a pedal power generator to light remote schools that are not on the power grid. Ashutosh Gowariker read about their effort in a book, got intrigued, and spent time with them. He also visited a remote village called Bilgaon in the Narmada Valley (the village is famous for volunteering effort 'shramdaan' to make their village self-sufficient in electricity). Inspired by all this, he set out to make the story about a disillusioned NRI who gets inspired enough to try to generate electricity for the village.
Mohan Bhargav (Shahrukh Khan) works for NASA, with a great career ahead of him. He is as far away from India's problems as possible. The turning point for him comes when he decides to go on vacation to India on his parents death anniversary, and to get his ayah / nanny Kaveriamma (Kishori Ballal) to come and live with him. When he reaches, he finds that his ayah no longer is in the ashram / home, but has been taken away by a woman. He reaches the village mentioned, and finds that his old childhood friend is the woman Gita who took Kaveriamma away. Mohan soon finds that the village has its own warts in terms of preventing low castes children from attending school, and is soon able to convince the village elders to change and let all children attend school.
Gita is not sure about why Mohan has come, and confronts him about trying to take Kaveriamma as a servant to the US. Mohan claims that he only wants her to have a comfortable life. Kaveriamma over-hears and sends Mohan on a journey that will change his life. He is sent to a village some distance away to collect rent on a property owned by Gita. Mohan travels over there, discovers that the tenant is in a pitiable condition, a former weaver who is not allowed to be a farmer because of caste and is leading a very bad life. Instead of collecting money, Mohan gives him some money. This visit shakes him.
He is now more convinced that change is required, to the point that he argues with village elders when they strive to convince him of the superiority of Indian civilization over American culture; he has seen a villager in a pitiable condition because of caste, and is unwilling to agree to a lot of lecture on the past; the present is what needs to improve. He gets his chance when there is an electricity failure during the Ramlila and asks for volunteer effort from the village in order to try and convert water at a height to turn a turbine and generate electricity.
He rigs up a pipe from a the water at a height to turn a turbine; this is the phase when he is also concurrently working on his NASA project as well as falling for Gita (and she, with those wonderfully expressive eyes, falling for him). He succeeds in generating power (captured in a magical, if somewhat romantic moment, when an old lady in a hut sees the bulb coming on). However, his time in the village is over. Kaveriamma refuses to go back with him to the US, and he has a tearful separation with Gita outside the village.
He gets back to his job in NASA, with a great career ahead of him, but he cannot forget his experiences of India and the village. He is in the dilemma of staying or going back, which means that his bright future in the US will be over; but can he follow his feelings and do what he think is right. He gets counseling from a friend, and from his boss, but to no avail. Once the satellite is launched, he resigns from NASA and gos back.
If you are a cynic, then this is nothing but a film-maker's attempt to cash in on patriotic feelings; but I would consider this a must see film for every Indian. If the movie inspires you to something that would do good for society and for the country, then it would be well worth it.

Dil To Pagal Hai (1997)

Dil to Pagal Hain, released in 1997, was a big success for the people involved, essentially the main roles of Shahrukh Khan, Madhuri Dixit, Karishma Kapoor, and to a lesser extent, that of Akshay Kumar (he had a shorter role in the movie). The movie was written and directed by Yash Chopra (who has had a long career in the movie industry with previous films such as Kabhie Kabhie, Kaala Pathar, Silsila, Chandni, Lamhe, etc). The movie was a big commercial success, and had very popular songs. The film had music by a new music director (Uttam Singh) who also won an award for this music.
The movie won a number of awards in the Filmfare awards:

Dil To Pagal Hai (1997)

The movie is essentially a light-hearted romantic movie about the relationships between people, more than a triangle - Akshay loves Madhuri and is engaged to her, Shahrukh loves Madhuri, Karishma loves Shahrukh, and then Madhuri falls in love with Shahrukh. All this takes place around the drama of a dance troupe who make their money and reputation doing dance dramas.
Shahrukh is the director of a dance troupe which is fairly successful (shades of Shiamak Davar ?) and among whose main dancer is Karishma. They have a normal friendly relationship, with Shahrukh treating her as a good friend; however, and this is where things normally go wrong, she starts to fall in love with him. He however does not reciprocate even when she tells him all about in a supposedly drunken state.
At the same time, Madhuri Dixit (an army orphan living with foster parents) welcomes back Akshay (the son of her adopted parents); they have been fast friends for a very long time. Unknown to her, he is on a mission this time on his trip home - he wants to tell her that he loves her, and does so in a very unusual style. Madhuri does not love him, but accepts his proposal (mighty strange way of doing it at an airport).
Now, Shahrukh suffers a major problem - he has promised a new drama and got sponsors and all, and then suddenly Karishma suffers a leg injury and cannot dance. He now has to find a new lead dancer, and suddenly (very coincidentally) comes across Madhuri dancing at her dance school, and is impressed. He manages to convince her to come and dance for him (those scenes are good). Soon, the dance practise starts and they spend more time together.
Shahrukh starts feeling closer to Madhuri, and she also start feeling something for him, even though she is engaged (which was more of a compromise). Karishma also starts feeling jealous of the whole thing (and there is a good scene where they have a discussion where she vents her frustration). The rest of the movie is about how Madhuri resolves her dilemma about who is the person she loves and will spend the rest of her life with.
There are some weak spots in the movie - the gaps where Karishma is not present, the facts that Madhuri does not seem to be doing anything other learning aerobics, dance and shopping (and not gainful work), as well as how Madhuri is able to feel for Shahrukh when she is already engaged. Overall though, the movie is watchable because of the emotions displayed, the emphasis on the one person made for for a person, etc.

Omkara - A rough but great movie

Omkara (release in 2006) was a much awaited movie. Director Vishal Bhardwaj had earlier made a name for himself with Makdee and Maqbool (starring an incredible performance by Irfan Khan), and his Hindi interpretation of Shakespeare's Othello had already lead to much anticipation, with the prospect of Saif Ali Khan playing a baddie's role being much awaited.
The movie delivered, but not too much as Vishal would have thought. It won a great amount of critical acclaim, and extreme kudos for the 2 best performances of Saif Ali Khan and Konkona Sen. Vivek Oberoi and Kareina Kapoor won praise, while the performance of Ajay Devgun could have been better - much more is expected out of an actor who has given a performance like Gangajal.

Omkara - A great movie, but crude

No matter, the movie belongs to Saif Ali Khan. His portrayal of the angry avenger Iago is brilliant. The movie would have been a commercial success if not for the dark atmosphere of the movie, and the crude dialog (replete with the Hindi curse words that you would hear in such a setting, but which inhibit more families and larger audiences from attending). Further, the portrayal of the settings of a rural UP are not exactly geared for wider commercial. Having said that, the movie did very well in markets abroad such as the US and British markets.
Ajay Devgun plays Omkara (Othello), Kareena Kapoor plays Dolly Mishra (Desdemona), Konkona Sen Sharma plays Indu (Iago's wife Emilia), Vivek Oberoi plays Kesu 'the firangi' (since he is from the city) (Cassio), and Bipasha Basu plays Billo Chamanbahar (Bianca).
Omkara is a local bahubali, a person capable of getting things done as well as controlling a criminal gang, and thus very valuable to the local politician Tiwari Bhaisaab (Naseeruddin Shah). This helps him right in the beginning when he elopes with Dolly and her father objects. When his daughter states that she was not abducted, but eloped on her own, he feels ashamed. This is a small twist in the story. The main story is when Tiwari moves onto a bigger role and wants Omkara to take his local seat. This is to be the culmination of Langda Tyaagi's (Saif Ali Khan) ambitions, to be the successor to Omkara. He is shocked and driven into a rage when Omkara appoints Kesu to be the next successor.
In this rage, he starts planning revenge, and does so without any hesitation or thought, and this is the guts of the movie. The cunning that he deploys to break both Omkara and Kesu, and in the process use a number of other people such as his own wife, Omkara's would-be-bride Dolly and the jilted lover of Dolly. His plans play on the most base of human emotions, trust, and eventually he manages to convince Omkara about an affair between his Dolly and his trusted lieutant Kesu, leading to a final conflict where Omkara destroys his own world and then takes his own life in regret over what he has done.
The screenplay, direction and music is all by Vishal Bhardwaj, lyrics are by Gulzar. The song 'Beedi jalai' became a national hit

Krantiveer - A Nana Patekar film

Krantiveer was a movie released in 1994; an all and out commercial movie released by the movie-maker who has made other patriotic movies (Mehul Kumar), it was also a movie that seeked to portray the transformation in one man when faced with evil. Even though the main character has been depicted as a person who is selfish, uncaring about others (other than his immediate family), a transformation is shown based on 2 major incidents that affect his life - the murder of his adopted father, and the riot in his locality that caused normal people to transform into murderers and brings out communal feelings.
Krantiveer was a role essayed brilliantly by Nana Patekar, turning the movie into a commercial as well as critical success. He puts forth some intense emotions into the movie, so you can believe him when he is essaying the role of a normal guy in the chawl who could not care less about the efforts of the journalist, or when he he suddenly becomes violent at the cremation ground of his adopted father. He is equally at ease taking out money from his father's safe and not caring about the repercussions, or the reaction of his mother and grandfather when they find him being delinquent and turn him out. However, it is transformation that is riveting.

Krantiveer - A Nana Patekar movie

Of course, the end, where he does mass murder, his speech, etc is a bit forced, but even there, his final speech at the hanging ground where he accuses the crowd of being impotent and uncaring about what is happening around them, and the way that he symbolically turns against them is interesting. However, the movie is not like a 'Ghulam' where in the end, the crowd essentially becomes active, here, the crowd still remains uncaring till the end, it is the single person transformation that is interesting.
The other interesting occasion in the movie is in the aftermath of the riot (turned communal riot) in the chawl, when he single-handedly does his bit (using some blood and direct force) to try and break away the Hindu Muslim separation that seems to be coming. This is a very intense scene, similar to the short scene where he refuses to get involved in favor of a widow who is facing oppression, but manages to get her son to figure out what to do, and eventually gets her to react directly instead of moaning at her fate.
The movie is about this guy Pratap (Nana Patekar) who was the grandson of a freedom fighter, but who was turned out by his family when very young because of his misdeeds. He manages to find a place in the heart of a slum lord Laxmidas (Paresh Rawal) and his son Atul (Atul Agnihotri). They have a pleasant time with a budding romance between Atul and Mamta (Mata Kulkarni), the daughter of a rich builder Yograj (Tinnu Anand). The slum in which they live also has a crusading journalist Megha (Dimple Kapadia) living in it, who tries to get Pratap involved her crusade, but he keeps on shying away. He does a bit from time to time, but nothing very great.
Things change when Yograj sets his eye on the slum for a big development scheme, and involves all the corrupt elements, the politicians, the judge, police, and the mafia leader Cheetah (Danny). As a part of this, communal riots are planned, and then Paresh Rawal is killed. This is when Pratap gets fired up, and carries out a campaign to kill all of them in broad daylight, for which he is sentenced to death. what happens then ? It's a fairly fast movie, well worth the watch.

Basant Bahar (1956) - A wonderful musical

Basant Bahar was a movie released in 1956, more than 50 years back. It has some great songs, and hence has never been forgotten. The movie starred Bharat Bhushan, Nimmi, Leela Chitnis, Kumkum, Om Prakash, and many others. The movie was directed by Raja Nawathe, and had some excellent music by Shanker Jaikishan. Lyrics are by Shailendra and Hasrat Jaipuri, and the singers for the movie are Mohammed Rafi, Manna Dey, Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle and Pandit Bhimsen Joshi.
The story is about a son not following in the footsteps of his father. Gopal (Bharat Bhushan) is the son of the Raj Jyotshi of a kingdom (Chitaldurg State), and his father had always sought to have his son follow in his footsteps. Instead, Gopal begins to become a vocalist, and is fairly gifted. He also falls in love with Gopi (Nimmi), the daughter of famous singer Neela Sani; both of these facts do not go down well with his father. However, Gopal continues on his path, until one day a rival tampers with his voice. Further, there is a turn of events that estranges him from Gopi; will Gopal be ever be able to be the greatest vocalist of his generation and what will happen to his love story ?

SUKH KE SAB SAATHI - GOPI

One of the top 10 devotional songs, the song Sukh Ke Sab Saathi from the movie Gopi (1970) is a great song. Sung by Muhammed Rafi, with lyrics by Rajinder Kishan and music by Kalyandji Anandji. The song is picturised on Dilip Kumar. Gopi also stars Saira Banu, Pran, Farida Jalal, Johnny Walker, Om Prakash, and Nirupa Roy.
Another great song from the movie was the song, Ramchandra Kah Gaye, that is famous even now and sung as a pure devotional song (again pictured on Dilip Kumar).
Gopi (Dilip Kumar) stays in the village with his elder brother, Girdhari (Om Prakash) and their younger sister Nandini (Farida Jalal). Girdhari goes to the landlord Lala (Pran) to take money, which he had saved for Nandini's wedding but gets thrown out of the house. Gopi forcibly gets the money but is accused by the landlord of stealing. Sent out of the house by Girdhari, Gopi leaves for the city and vows to come back only after making enough money for Nandini's wedding. What happens next ? Does Gopi manage to do what he has sought to do ?
