Wanted (released in 2009) - A typical Masala movie starring Salman Khan

Wanted is one of the biggest hit movies of the year 2009, and was a typical masala movie. The movie went down the total police vs. big don route, with action, a love story, music, everything that goes to make a huge movie. And the movie did well in the intended area, with the single movie screens (typical of smaller towns) doing much better than the performance of the movie in multiplexes. The movie is a remake of a Tamil movie, Pokkiri, and is directed by the same director who did the Tamil movie, the famous dancer Prabhu Deva.
The movie starred primarily Salman Khan, since the other actors were lesser known or not the current hot shot favorites; so the movie starred as others, Ayesha Takia, Prakash Raj, Mahesh Manjrekar, Govind Namdeo, Vinod Khanna and Aseem Merchant.

The movie deals with the Police Department's attempts to catch an international Don Ghani Bhai who lives outside India, and runs his business in India through his local man, Golden. They are in conflict with another local gangster Datta Pawle. Golden wants to beef up his local support, and hires a local freestyle gunman, Radhe (played by Salman Khan). Radhe is a typical freestyle person, brash and confident, and wants his money from whoever he is working for. Then there is the local crooked cop, Inspector Talpade (Mahesh Manjrekar), who is connected to Golden and then to Ghani Bhai, and who takes a liking to Jhanvi (played by Ayesha Takia, who lives with her mother and younger brother). Once, after Radhe saves Jhanvi from the Inspector, she starts liking him, but does not know what he does for a living. She slowly gets to know, and then when she sees an attack on him, and his brutal fight back where he dispatches the men after him, she sees how we easily kills other people. Vinod Khanna plays the role of a gym owner, who is the father to a friend of Radhe's.
Golden gets killed, and then Ghani Bhai has to come back to Bombay to take over the operations, and is caught soon after. His men kidnap the Police Commissioner's daughter and make porn CD's of her to force the freedom of Ghani Bhai, but she reveals that there is a police man in the gang. Ghani Bhai attempts to find out, and comes to Vinod Khanna, since it is his son who is the police man (and learns that the policeman killed Golden so as to get him back to India). And when he kills Vinod Khanna, he gets to know that Radhe is the actual police man. A final battle, and you know who will be the winner.

Hera Pheri (released in 1976) - starring Amitabh Bachchan, Vinod Khanna, and Saira Banu

Amitabh Bachchan and Vinod Khanna acted in a number of movies (a total of 6 movies) together in the 1970's, with Hera Pheri being one of them (Amar Akbar Anthony was the most famous of these). Hera Pheri was directed by Prakash Mehra, and starred Amitabh Bachchan, Vinod Khanna, Saira Banu, Sulakshana Pandit, Shreeram Lagoo and Asrani. The movie had one nomination for the Filmfare Award, with Vinod Khanna being nominated for Best Supporting Actor (although he did not win). The movie had some popular music by the music director duo of Kalyanji-Anandji, and the movie script was written by Satish Bhatnagar and Vijay Kaul.
The movie was popular, although it can get complicated. Like many other movies of that period, it showcases the hero (or heroes) as criminals, but good-hearted criminals. They are not terrorists, they don't go around shooting people with guns or something, but they steal jewelery from rich people, or they steal from rich houses, and so on.

The story of this movie is based on the relationship between 2 friends, Ajay (Vinod Khanna) and vijay (a person by the name of Vijay cannot be anybody other than Amitabh Bachchan). Vijay saves Ajay when Ajay is going to jump in front of a train, and ever since then, they became the best of friends. Ajay was sold by his father to get money for his mother's illness, and then his foster parents died, so Ajay was rendered homeless; Vijay on the other hand is troubled by the story of his parents. His father was killed, and it was on that night that his mother turned mad, and he is looking for how to cure her (maybe getting the murderer would help in doing that).
The twist in the story is that the person who killed Vijay's father is actually Ajay's long lost father (the one who sold him away and now seeks him desperately, as much as he seeks to kill Vijay's mother (she witnessed the murder of her husband and is a witness)). In order to get medication for his mom, Vijay plays a con man who, along with Ajay, cons people to earn money. When Ajay finally finds his father, he changes sides and goes to his father, leaving Vijay. What happens next ?

Hero - The story of a criminal turned hero (1983)

Hero released in the year 1983, turned its male protagonist (Jackie Shroff) into an overnight star. Jackie had already made his debut (a rather unsuccessful one) in the film Swami Dada under the guidance of Dev Anand. But it needed maverick director Subhash Ghai’s Midas touch to catapult Shroff to the big league of fame and popularity.

In Hero, Ghai takes the time-tested track of star-struck lovers and makes a simple yet heart-warming story of a criminal turning over a new leaf under the influence of love. The movie’s main strength is its outstanding music courtesy Laxmikant-Pyarelal and Ghai’s sensitive handling of the love story. Of course the entire cast also does a commendable job. In the film Jaikishen, or Jackie Dada, as he is called in the film, is a criminal with a heart of gold. He has old scores to settle with the area’s Thakur and his son, a police officer. Pasha (the ever reliable Amrish Puri), a notorious criminal, has been imprisoned by the IG Police, Shrikanth Mathur (Shammi Kapoor). The evil Pasha swears to avenge himself and sends his favourite henchman, Jackie Dada to do this for him. The plan is to abduct Mathur's beloved daughter Radha (Meenakshi Sheshadri) and then bargain for Pasha’s release with the cops.

Jackie takes on the identity of a cop and under the pretext of saving Radha from the local goons abducts her. As fate would have it, the inevitable happens and the two opposites fall in love. Soon Radha comes to learn about Jackie’s true identity but instead of giving up on him, she chooses to repose her faith in this relationship. Determined to make an honest man out of Jackie, she convinces him to surrender o the cops. Jackie by this time is also convinced of his errant ways and is determined to do the right thing. He surrenders to the cops who imprison him for two years. Radha, finds a confidante in her brother Damodar (Sanjeev Kumar) and tells him all about her love for Jackie. In his bid to help Radha, Damodar asks his friend Johnny to pretend to be in love with Radha, thinking this would deter their father from getting her married off before Jaikishen is out of prison. Meanwhile, Jackie completes his term and starts working in a garage, in his bid to lead a life of honesty. But Shrikanth is not convinced of his honest intentions. In another twist, Damodar discovers that Johnny is a drug dealer. Around the same time, Pasha gets out of jail and kidnaps Radha to punish both Shrikanth and Jaikishen. Whether Jackie is able to save his true love and whether Shrikant finally accepts Jackie constitutes the climax of the film.

Dus - Fast paced action

Dus is a fast-paced action thriller starring a number of Bollywood stars Sanjay Dutt, Sunil Shetty, Abhishek Bachchan, Shilpa Shetty, Pankaj Kapoor, Esha Deol and Zayed Khan. The movie was released in 2005, and was a decent hit (costing around Rs. 20 crore, and earned a revenue of Rs. 43 crore). The movie was directed by Anubhav Sinha, with production by Nitin Manmohan and Sohail Maklai. Music was by Vishal-Shekhar, and Ranjit Barot. The movie was fairly long, being around 2 hours & 20 minutes. Music for the film became quite popular, and the title song of 'Dus Bahane' was a hit. The movie also had a twist, in that one of the popular heroes was sacrificed at the climax of the movie, something that a lot of movies avoid.
The movie is about the effort of the Anti Terrorist Cell (working somewhat similar to what you would expect the RAW to function, but without all the glamour that the movie depicts) to stop a massive bombing of which it does not have much information, and for which there are only 10 days left. Sanjay Dutt is the head of this organization, with the name of Siddhant Dheer. Along with him, his younger brother Shashank Dheer (Abhishek Bachchan), Aditya Singh (Zayed Khan), Aditi Kumar (Shilpa Shetty) are the others in the organization. Neha (Esha Deol) is an agent in Canada who starts the entire process, by reporting the existence of a plan being spear-headed by Jambwal, about whom they do not have any information, and whose identity they do not know.

Dus - Hindi Movie released in 2005 starring Sanjay Dutt, Sunil Shetty, Abhishek Bachchan, Shilpa Shetty, Pankaj Kapoor, Esha Deol and Zayed Khan

The movie attempts to play the game of multiple double-crossing, about people betraying each other, about people not being who they claim to be. Because the ATS does not know the identity of Jambwal, they cannot even confirm that if they catch a person, whether that person is Jambwal or not. And this happens when they catch Mehendi (Pankaj Kapoor), an agent of Jambwal who is terrified of Jambwal. They are trying to interrogate him to find out more Jambwal, but they land in more problems. The car provided to them by Neha is rigged to explode if it slows down (English movie Speed?), so who is Neha. Zayed Khan is a bomb expert who can detect if a bomb is planted, and what are the chances of defusing it in time.
They are further trying to not reveal their plan to the Canadian police, even though the plan involves the terrorists bombing a stadium where a match is ongoing, so as to attack the Indian Prime Minister who will be there to attend the match (on May 10th). They uncover traitors in their midst, although each of these traitors extract a cost. The action peaks in the end, as they are at the stadium where there are multiple bombs planted, and their mission is to get the bombs away without loss of life (with the bombs being constructed of C4, a military explosive (where did terrorists get C4 from?)). The movie is a much watchable movie, be sure to watch (although the logic can sometimes fail).

behke behke se hum hote hain

yeh aaisa jo ho jaye
dhunde nigaahein jab har pal usko
apna dil kho jaye
aankhon mein kyon chehra uska thodasa dhundhlaye re
cham se woh aa jaye cham se aa jaye
cham se woh aa jaye man pe cha jaye
cham se woh aa jaye cham se aa jaye

mausam ka har andaz bhi
teri adaa ban gaya
chahat ka yeh ehsaas bhi

tera pehra khwaabo mein
kabhi dil ki raaho mein
yeh hota hain ho jaaye de
cham se woh aa jaye cham se aa jaye
cham se woh aa jaye man pe cha jaye
cham se woh aa jaye cham se aa jaye

jaayegi jab tu deke judaai bhi
tanha si hogi dilki tanhai bhi
ehsaas tere dil ka aankhon semeri chalka
betaab hoke jab uski hi yaad mein dil ghabraye re
cham se

Dhoom 2 (2006): More action, and equal success

Dhoom 2 was released in 2006, as a much awaited sequel after the success of Dhoom (2004). The movie was directed by Sanjay Gadhvi (who had earlier directed Tere Liye (2000), Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi Hai (2002), and Dhoom (2004)), and after the success of Dhoom, he was the natural choice for shooting this movie as well. The movie had a tough initial act to catch, since the original Dhoom had fast paced action in terms of bike action, as well as the glamour quotient. So, in Dhoom 2, they had to improve on both the glam as well as on the action scenes - so you had Aishwarya Rai and Bipasha Basu as the hot female leads along with Abhishek Bachchan, Hrithik Roshan, and Uday Chopra; the action was also accelerated with cliff shots, landing on a train, and numerous other action sequences.

The movie was also a bit controversial since a kiss scene between Aishwarya and Hrithik was removed, since Aishwarya was becoming a part of the Bachchan household. Besides this however, there were some specialties in the movie, with more focus on the dashing villain, Hrithik rather than on Abhishek (there was speculation on why Abhishek settled for a much lower role). The movie had some great songs by Pritam, with lyrics by Sameer.

Dhoom 2 (2006) with Aishwarya Rai and Bipasha Basu as the hot female leads along with Abhishek Bachchan, Hrithik Roshan, and Uday Chopra

The movie follows the same track as the earlier Dhoom, with the police inspector chasing a thief who seems to disappear into thin air, and keeps on cocking a snook at the police. In this movie, the thief is played by a Mr. A (Hrithik Roshan) as he is in the habit of leaving a 'A' symbol after each robbery. There is a great action scene where he steals a beautiful English crown by sky diving onto a train that is in the Namibian desert. As usual, he is pursued by ACP Jai Dixit, who is accompanied by his Sub Inspector Ali Akbar (Uday Chopra), and by his former classmate ACP Shonali Bose (Bipasha Basu).
And then there is the entry of Sunheri (Aishwarya Rai), who wants to get close to Mr. A as his fan, but who is actually working for the police. Mr. A trains her, and takes her along for another robbery in Brazil, but there Hrithik discovers that Sunheri is working against him, and threatens her. She is in love with him by that time, and ends up turning over to his side. In the end, even though their robbery is a success, they are not able to escape, and in a daring cliff confrontation, there is a staged death of Mr. A. In the end, they show Mr. A and Sunheri together in a restaurant, where ACP Jai also walks in.

Crazy Kiya Re

chori chori kiyaa re, dil ye dil liyaa re - 2
jaadu se jaadu kiyaa……kiyaa re
jaagi soyi rahoon, khoyi khoyi rahoon,
uski yaadon mein, uske khwaabon mein
jhoome jiyaa re………crazy kiyaa re

naa usko pataa, naa uski khataa
main uspe mar gayi, zaraa usko bataa,
dheere dheere ikraar mein,
kabhi kabhi intezaar mein ,
uske hi pyaar mein………jhoome jiyaa re…crazy kiyaa re

main yahaan bhi gayi, main wahaan bhi gayi,
sochaa pal pal use, main jahaan bhi gayi
din ho yaa raat ho
woh mere saath ho
jab uski baat ho…jhoome jiyaa re……crazy kiyaa re

chori chori kiyaa re, dil ye dil liyaa re - 2
jaadu se jaadu kiyaa……kiyaa re
jaagi soyi rahoon, khoyi khoyi rahoon,

Dhoom (2004) - the action thriller

Indian movies had seldom seen movies like these - a high voltage running chase between some smart thieves and a great policeman who pursues them to the bitter end. If a movie can be scripted and directed to be slick, it can be fairly impressive, and Dhoom was that. Don't expect any great script, any major story or message, but if you want an action flick that is fast and furious, then this is a movie certainly worth watching. Obviously, none of the characters of the movie are known for their excellent emoting abilities, but then they were not expected to do so. So, throw in some great action sequences, skin show, and fast songs, and you can have a movie that is bound to be a hit, and so Dhoom was (one measure of a movie being a hit is that there is a sequel soon, and so Dhoom2 came out just 2 years later).

Dhoom (2004) - the action thriller starring John Abraham, Abhishek Bachchan, Uday Chopra, Rimi Sen, Esha Deol

The movie was produced by Aditya Chopra (Yash Raj films being the banner), and directed by Sanjay Gadhvi. The music was by Pritam, lyrics by Sameer, with the story being penned by Vijay Krishna Acharya. The movie won a few awards, with John Abraham winning awards for the negative role (although to give John an acting award takes some courage)
# 2005: IIFA Best Villain Award - John Abraham
# 2005: Zee Cine Award for Best Actor in a Negative Role - Johan Abraham
The movie is about the cat and mouse battle between the gang led by John Abraham, who start stealing from banks, without leaving traces for the police to investigate (and catch them). They use high powered bikes to evade the police when required, and make their getaways in a trace. They also lead a normal life as employees of a pizza outlet, and try to make their life as normal as possible (a good scene in the movie is when John Abraham throws the new flashy car of a gang member off a cliff as it would call attention to sudden riches).
Enter the ACP Jai Dixit (Abhishek Bachchan), married to Sweetie (Rimmii Sen). He has a mission to run these thieves down, and towards this purpose, recruits a racer and bike mechanic Ali (Uday Chopra). Ali has a girlfriend Sheena (Esha Deol in a major skin showing role that made her into a glamour doll), but unknown to him, she is also a member of Abraham's gang. Jai has, at the same time, managed to get Ali into the gang as his spy, so that he can eventually track them down and catch them. Does he suceed in the end ? What happens to Ali ? Watch the movie (either on TV whenever it appears, or on DVD) and get a thrill.

A Wednesday - Dynamic

Sometimes you come across a movie that shakes you a lot, and which leaves a promise that there is a space for movie making that is different from the standard cliches, or romances, or manufactured tragedies. 'A Wednesday' is a movie that I got around to watching much after the movie was released, and I was thoroughly impressed. You may not agree with everything that the movie propounds, but you cannot be but impressed by the pace of the movie, by some superb acting from the various stars, by the ability to leave you sympathizing with a person who directs acts of murder, and eventually admiring the director, Neeraj Pandey, who dared to make a movie with no main female lead in a romantic situation, and most of all, a movie without any songs.
The movie certainly was not a rich action sequences laden movie such as 'Singh in King', but given a choice, I would rather watch a movie like 'A Wednesday'. This was a movie that gained extremely from word of mouth, colleagues who had seen the movie gave enthusiastic reviews, and I would do the same if somebody asked me.

Hindi Movie A Wednesday (released in 2008)

Without revealing the end, the twist in the movie as well as the impassioned speech by the bomb maker comes at the end of a gripping movie, and keep you on your seats till the final credits come to an end. The performances by Anupam Kher, Naseeruddin Shah, Jimmy Shergill and Deepal Shaw are all first rate, and the fact that they are able to make their presence felt in such a short movie (1.5) hours makes the performances even more creditable. The movie also introduces the concept of a backlash by the 'stupid, common man'; all of us who live in a city and go to our work places, and some of whom die in bomb blasts that happen in our cities.
The movie is about the flashback by a retired police commissioner of Bombay, Prakash Rathod [Anupam Kher]. He remembers an incident that happened in the space of 4 hours, on a normal weekday afternoon, the details of the incident not being present on any file or records (only in the memory of those involved). He gets a call from an anonymous caller about bombs kept in the city at different locations, and for defusing which, 4 Muslim terrorists in police custody needed to be rounded up from their separate locations. The caller, Naseeruddin Shah, situated on the top of a building, almost like a picnic, makes the police believe in his story when he discloses the location of a bomb right in the police station next to the police headquarters.
Anupam Kher gets complete authority from the Chief Minister to handle the negotiations, and gets down to business. He is obviously dealing with a person who knows how to conduct himself, defeating attempts to track his details. Eventually, inspite of a crack team and some fast police work, spear headed by a hot headed police officer (Jimmy Shergill in a great role), Anupam Kher is forced to follow all of the directions he is given, till the time that the terrorists are transported to an air field in Juhu. If you have not watched the movie, you should watch it.

Pathar Ke Phool (1991)

Patthar Ke Phool was a movie released in 1991. It was the debut movie of Raveena Tandon and one of the earlier movies of Salman Khan; and unlike some of Salman's earlier movies, this was not exactly a hit. Some of the other characters in the movie were Vinod Mehra, Kiran Kumar, Reema Lagoo and Manohar Singh. Vinod Mehra passed away before the movie could be released, and the movie was dedicated to his memory. The movie was directed by Anant Balani and produced by GP Sippy. Music for the movie was by Ramlaxman, and the movie was written by Salim Khan.
The movie was about this young police officer fighting an underworld gang. He is also in love with Kiran (Raveena Tandon) who is actually the daughter of the leader of the gang, and about whose real activities she is unaware.
Raveena won the Filmfare Lux New Face Award for this movie.

Patthar Ke Phool (1991)

So what happens when the duty of Suraj (Salman Khan) leads him to fight against the activities of his beloved's father ? Her father is also against this relationship, and the movie is about this conflict.

Prahaar: A classic movie for Nana Patekar

There are times when you watch that is so impressive that you don't mind watching it again. I found Prahaar to be one such movie. The movie was released in 1991, and it has been quite some time, but it can't take away the topical nature of the movie. The movie was directed by Nana Patekar and produced by Sudhakar Bokade. The movie had music by Laxmikant Pyarelal and lyrics by Mangesh Kulkarni.
Nana Patekar showed a commendable amount of skill in extracting good performances from the cast of characters that included Dimple Kapadia and Madhuri Dixit (there was a story floating around the time when the movie was made that he wanted a natural look, and so when one of the female leads reported to the set in make-up, he asked her to wash the make-up off). The movie does not have a direct villain, but there is a struggle against many kinds of bad elements, whether it be terrorists, or the normal city ruffians and hoodlums who take hafta (extortion money), or even of the normal population who have been so terrorised that they have lost some of their sense of right or wrong. The movie also has some good performances from the second tier of characters such as Gautam Joglekar (who plays Peter D'Souza).
The movie starts off as the story about men who have joined the army as commandos. They start to undergo the army commando training course under the tutelage of Major Chauhan (Nana - who actually took a brief training course at the army commando training course), and the course can be pretty hard, forcing many of them to feel like dropping out. Some do, but Peter does not and completes the course finally. By that time, he has developed a respect for Major Chauhan. The training course depicted is fairly detailed, with a certain amount of humour showing up.
At the end of the course, they are called to undertake an anti-terrorist operation, successful, but Peter is crippled and has to return home and leave the army. He reaches home, and his fiancee Madhuri is glad to have him back. His army training however soon causes him to start opposing the local mafia who extort money, and soon he is killed. At this time, Major Chauhan comes for the funeral, and sees how the local police is unconcerned and takes no action.
Major Chauhan takes up as a paying guest in the house of Dimple (a young widow with a small child) and gets affectionate towards the child (they never actually show any romance between Nana and Dimple, although there are many hints towards something like this possibly developing). Once he actually takes on the ruffians single-handedly when they tease Dimple, but soon realizes that the local citizens are so suppressed by the mafia that they actually turn on Nana for going against the ruffians. And then the epic scene where the gangsters (this was from an age where the use of guns was less) decide to attack Dimple's house and Nana.
They first scare Dimple and her child, and then they taunt Nana. And then the fight begins - you can see the untrained ruffians being very confident of their youth and numbers against a person who is after a single person and older than them, and yet soon they realize that the person whom they are attacking can defeat all of them, and Nana proceeds to do just that. In the process, he actually kills them, and is soon hauled up before the court. And his speech about being a soldier, and fighting against the vermin of society goes in vain, since the judge declares that his fight is misplaced, he is not responsible for repairing the civilian society, and he is sent for counseling until he is over this.
The movie is a movie that talks about how the fight against injustice is something that all of us can handle, how the personal conviction and strength of a person can make them win odds, and yet how sometime the whole fight can be futile in the face of a disinterested administration.

Murder: The movie that launched Mallika Sherawat and Emran Hashmi

Murder was not the debut movie for either Mallika Sherawat or Emraan Hashmi (debut movies being Khwaish for Mallika and Footpath for Imraan Hashmi), but this was the movie that gave a big boost to their film career, and also set their reputations (something that got repeated in future films). So Mallika got the reputation of being ready to do sexy roles involving hot scenes, exposure, kissing, and similar such characteristics, and Emraan got the reputation of a serial kisser. The movie was directed by Anurag Basu under the tutelage of Mahesh Bhatt, and there are signs of the Bhatt effect showing through. The movie is based on the English movie 'Unfaithful'. It does have some great songs and hummable music, and overall is a watch at least once. However if you are watching with family and are hesitant about bold scenes, then don't watch. The movie has bold scenes where required, and does not hesitate to shock in the story about a neglected wife having an affair with a former lover. The movie has music by Anu Malik, and lyrics are by Sayeed Quadri and Rahat Indori.

Murder Hindi Movie

The movie is different from the usual murder story, and also different from the run of the mill 'B' class movie that seek to titillate the viewer with hot and racy sex scenes. The movie is from a top banner, and presents the story of what happens in a family when a partner starts to feel neglected, and the difference being that the movie does not hesitate in showing some bold sex scenes. Hence, a number of scenes of adultery and betrayal of the marital bond of trust; but with a difference, the innate love between the husband and wife is enough to finally get them out of the mess that they land up in.
The movie is mostly in flashback, with the police investigating a murder of a young disc jockey Sunny (Emraan Hashmi) in Malaysia, and are interrogating people associated with him. They discover the truth about the husband and wife couple of Ashmit Sen (Sudir) and Mallika Sherawat (Simran). Simran used to love Emraan in college, but lost touch with him when he was jailed for assaulting a person over Simran. Sudhir was married to Simran's sister, but when her sister died leaving behind a baby, Simran took on the responsibility and married Sudhir, but there never seemed to be something like true love between them.
At a time when Simran is feeling very neglected and Sudhir does not seem to care, Simran meets Sunny and soon they are having a rollicking affair involving scenes of a fair amount of intimacy. Simran feels very guilty, but keeps on with the affair. Sudir soon starts to suspect something and hires a detective who finds the truth very soon. Sudhir has a confrontation with Sunny, and soon Sunny is dead. At that stage, both husband and wife start to cover for each other, and the rest of the movie is about who is the culprit.

Gangster: A great movie

A typical urban gangster movie of the 70's and 80's (thus excluding the rural dacoit movie such as Sholay) was all about the larger than life character, fighting against the police, and maybe reforming or dying. It was the odd movie such as Deewar which tried to look into the mind of a gangster, but these were still movies about larger than life characters. It was films like Vaastav & Satya that tried to break into the basic characters mind, and show the goings on around them, along with the overall despair that involved such criminals (and make no mistake, no matter the circumstances, the new age of movies display them as criminals even when showing their sequence of steps to becoming a gangster).

Gansgter

A refreshing new movie in this regard is the movie called Gangster (directed by Anurag Basu for Mahesh Bhatt). The movie pulls no punches, showing the old game of gangster vs. police through the eyes of a young woman forced to make her choices. The movie is truly a different movie, able to de-glamorize the whole gangster-moll and romance bit. The movie does have some unrealistic parts as well, such as the alcohol-sunken portrayal of a bar dancer by Kangana Ranaut in a great debut role. With some excellent roles given to both Shiney Ahuja and Emraan Hashmi, this movie is also a good example of a movie doing well on the basis of story and performances (and some good music).
Story is all in flashback, showing 2 people firing guns at each other; and then the story starts to unfold. Kanagana essays the role of Simran, a dancer turned into an alcoholic. She has dreams of a normal family, but those are not to be. One day she gives shelter to a dreaded gangster Daya (Shiney Ahuja) when he is being chased by the cops. Why she does so is not clear ! However, Daya starts visiting her club and soon saves her from a drunk customer, and then asks her to come home. And so naturally, they start having an affair; but always on the move (far removed from the normal life that she wanted) since he is on the run from the police. He even ignores the advice from his patron (Gulshan Grover in a short role) to leave her.
They decide to escape from India so as to escape the police and the pressure; and he goes off to Mauritius and she is sent off to South Korea. And it is here that she starts sinking into the pressured and dreary life of an alcoholic, which is when Emraan Hashmi meets her (he is a singer, and starts showing interest in her). She succumbs to her loneliness and has a one-night stand with him. In the meantime Shiney reaches there and beats up Emraan almost to death. However, this is the last we see of the proud don, since he now tries to lead a normal life for her, doing menial work in order to earn money. But, we all know what happens from a one-night stand - Kangana is now pregnant with Emraan's child.
Emraan encourages her to get Shiney to surrender to the police, and, in a fateful decision that she will always regret, she picks Emraan's side. And then after Shiney is gone, she learns that Emraan was a policeman, and the finale is about her trying to take vengeance. The movie is a worth-watch, and with some hummable songs. Movie has music by Pritam Chakraborty; lyrics are by Sayeed Qadri, Mayur Puri, Nilesh Mishra

Tridev: A real entertainer

At near the end of the 80's came a movie that was every inch a masala movie. Tridev. It was a super-hit, with all the elements of a masala movie thrown in. There was revenge, romance, guns, explosions, a villain, a hero back from the dead, another hero who is a villager who falls for a rich and cultured girl, there is a villain who looks like a proper villain, and then there was the catchy songs. I remember that 'Oye Oye' was the most heard song when outside your house, being played in vehicles, in music stores, by shopkeepers, and for some time became the patron phrase of eve-teasers.
The movie was directed by Rajiv Rai and released in 1989, and it sort of also was the major movie in which Naseerudin Shah acts as a normal actor in a commercial movie, away from the art movies that he was so famous. There was some screaming from the art movie types about this betrayal, but I think that his response was to the effect that he also needs to be a success, and he does not see anything wrong in doing commercial movies.

Tridev: A real entertainer

The movie also led to a relationship between the director and one of his heroines. Rajiv Rai (34 years old) and Sonam (17 years old) fell in love, and eventually got married soon after.
The movie had music by Kalayanji Anandji, lyrics by Anand Bakshi, and starred the following: Sunny Deol, Jackie Shroff, Naseeruddin Shah, Madhuri Dixit, Sonam, Sangeeta Bijlani, Anupam Kher, Amrish Puri and Raza Murad. With such a large star cast, you would expect that there would be a number of stories around the various cast members, and the movie could get complex, but in my opinion, the director did a wonderful job in terms of getting the movie together into a fluid and flowing entertainer.
After all this, the story of the movie almost seems like an after-thought, but the movie does have a story. Bhujang is the pivot around which the movie runs, he is the villain who impacts the lives of all the main characters. When Naseeruddin Shah was young, his father was killed by Bhujang in a village, and the police was unable to help. Ever since then, he is somewhat disdainful of the police force and its men. Sunny Deol is a hard policeman, very critical of criminals, and as a result of excessive use of force in one such encounter with criminals, he is sent off to police lines. When in Bombay, he was a strong force against the illegal activities of Bhujang and his sons. He is supported by the police commissioner Anupam Kher, and is also in love with the commissioner's daughter, Madhuri Dixit.
At one time, Bhujang kidnaps Madhuri to get one of his men free, and Anupam Kher refuses to do anything, and it is then Jackie Shroff (Anupam's son) defies his dad and breaks into the jail and frees the person. Since he is now hunted by the police, Jackie joins the gang and soon falls for Sangeeta Bijlani, who is with the gang to avenge a past harm that Bhujang did. The characters start meeting in terms of Sonam (daughter of Raza Murad)coming to the village for a shoot and meets Naseeruddin and they start liking each other. Sunny is posted in the same village, and soon he has a violent run-in with Naseeruddin, but they like each and becomes friends. The rest of the movie is about how these characters join hands, and fight Bhujang and his men and eventually defeat them.

Jis Desh Mein Ganga Behti Hain (1960)

An almost magical movie from Raj Kapoor, it seems a very simplistic movie. In these cynical times, you would think that such a thing is impossible. However, the fact is that in reality, Acharya Vinoba Bhave did indeed cause dacoits to see the error of their ways and surrender. The movie portrays Raj Kapoor as a very simple man, not used to the complication of life, not very clever; but very honest, very much in love with the country and the fact that humans are not bad, and if they are acting wrongly, they can be shown the error of their ways and come to the right track.
The movie was released in 1960, and was a big hit. It was directed by Radhu Karmakar under the banner of R.K.Films and also starred Padmini, Pran, and Lalita Pawar. The music was by Shankar Jaikishan and the songs were a great hit. The movie won the Filmfare Award for Best Movie in 1961, and perpetuated Raj Kapoor's image as the simple, uncomplicated, not calculating film persona that he had been carrying along since Awaara and Shree 420.

Jis Desh Mein Ganga Behti Hain

The movie stars a group of dacoits living with their families away from civilization, much hunted by the police. They are naturally suspicious of most things, and fear coming into contact with the police. One day, by accident Raju (Raj Kapoor) lands in their midst and only the sardar manages to save him, since the others suspect him to be policeman. Pran is the rebellious second in command and does not like Raj Kapoor.
Over a period of time, Padmini develops a liking for the simple ways of Raj Kapoor and falls in love with him further enraging Pran who had always thought that he would marry Padmini. Raj Kapoor somehow does not ever seem like becoming a dacoit and is mocked by the others for his seemingly gentle manners and lack of toughness, although many of the people start liking him.
Things take a sudden turn for the worse when the sardar is killed and Raj Kapoor admits that he is a policeman (even though he is not) and is imprisoned by Pran for eventually being killed. Padmini goes off to get the police, and at the same time, Pran kills one of the elder females (Lalita Pawar) by mistake when Raj Kapoor is persuading the other dacoits to surrender; they are after living a life of nomads and not being able to bring up their families properly. They set out to surrender and at the same time the police has assembled a huge force to capture them. There is a confrontation where Pran almost manages to have a shootout, but Raj Kapoor manages to save the day and prevent any bloodshed.
The depiction of the lives of the dacoits seems very realistic; I was also very impressed by the sets in the closing scene where the shooting was done in a very large partly hilly space, and you get a feeling of incredible vastness and a massive number of people assembling for a confrontation.

Songs from the movie:

O Basanti Pavan

Hum Bhi Hain Tum Bhi Ho

O Maine Pyaar Kiya

Hoton Pe Sachai Rehti Hain

Aa Ab Laut Chale (an incredibly beautiful song) - The final song about the path back to civilization

Songs: From the Jackie Shroff Movie 'Gardish'

In 1993, Priyadarshan made a movie called Gardish that starred the cast of Jackie Shroff, Amrish Puri, Dimple Kapadia, and Aishwarya (a different one). The movie was a remake of the 1989 Malayalam blockbuster, Kireedam. It provided Jackie Shroff a good platform with a very strong role, that caused him to display a lot of emotions. In my opinion, he did a very good role. Music Director was R D Burman, and lyrics were by Javed Akhtar.
The role was simple, he did the role of the son of a police constable (Amrish Puri), and his father wants him to join the police force as an inspector. One of the requirements is that he should not have a case against him. One day, Jackie finds his father being beaten up by the local goonda Mukesh Rishi, and intervenes. Even though he does not want it, he gets a reputation of being the goonda, and soon his father throws him out of the house. He is very desperate, and in great despair. At this time, his lady love also gets married and Dimple gives him some support.
The climax of the movie is when his sister gets kidnapped by Mukesh Rishi, and then his father delivers him to Mukesh Rishi and tells Jackie not to fight back. However, as Jackie is getting beaten to a pulp, his father is unable to take it and tells him to fight back. Jackie fights back and eventually kills him. At this stage, he confronts his father as to when Amrish Puri could not take Jackie getting beaten, how could Jackie earlier take Amrish Puri getting beaten. He is taken away by the police, his dreams in tatters.

Song: Hum Na Samjhe The (sung by S P Balasubramaniam)

Lyrics:

Hum na samjhe the
baat itni si
khaab sheeshe ke
duniya paththar ki

Hum na samjhe the
baat itni si
khaab sheeshe ke
duniya paththar ki

Hum na samjhe the
baat itni si

Aarzoo humne ki to hum paae
Aarzoo humne ki to hum paae
roshni saath laai thi saaye
saaye gehre the
roshni halki

Hum na samjhe the
baat itni si
khaab sheeshe ke
duniya paththar ki

Hum na samjhe the
baat itni si

Sirf veeranee sirf tanhayee
sirf veeranee sirf tanhayee
zindahi humko ye kahan laayee?
kho gayi humse raah manzil ki

Hum na samjhe the
baat itni si
khaab sheeshe ke
duniya paththar ki

Hum na samjhe the
baat itni si

kya koi beche kya koi baante
kya koi beche kya koi baante
apne daaman mein sirf hain kaante
aur dukanein hain sirf phoolon ki

Hum na samjhe the
baat itni si
khaab sheeshe ke
duniya paththar ki

Hum na samjhe the
baat itni si
khaab sheeshe ke
duniya paththar ki

Hum na samjhe the
baat itni si...
