For some time now, the concept of villains in Hindi Movies has undergone a transformation. With the depiction of the angry young man by Amitabh Bachchan who acts as a rebel, and then the villain played by Shahrukh Khan in the 3 movies he did on a trop (Baazigar, Darr and Anjaam), a villain came to be a seen as a person who became a villain due to circumstances, and that there were shades of grey (rather than a pure Black and White) in the depiction of a villain. And then came this movie which showcased a pure villain, who had no real reasons that could give a reason as to why they became a villain; just pure lust that could turn a person into capable of killing. The movie was the debut movie of director Tanuja Chandra, and gave her a good reputation. The movie had music by Uttam Singh, with an incredible sad song by Jasjit Singh (Chithi Na Koi Sandesh).
The movie had some good performances by Kajol (in a double role), Sanjay Dutt (as a blind major), and Ashutosh Rana as the cold blooded killer who can kill without mercy and who can create the total sense of fear in Kajol.
The movie shows the life of twin sisters, Sonia and Naina Sehgal (both played by Kajol). Sonia is more of an extrovert, and is in a relationship with Jas Arora (with both of them committed to marry each other); Naina is more of the introvert - and both of them are deeply in love with each other. And then there is the postman, Gokul, who rapes and kills without mercy and whom the police is hunting. And then the unthinkable happens, with Gokul finding Sonia alone at home when he comes to deliver something, and then he does rape and kill her. This is a horrible tragedy for the family, and they are not able to take this loss.
Naina wants to find who the killer is, and is soon very suspicious of Gokul, and even gets the police to question him. However, Gokul is able to use a social worker to get the police to get off his case and is again free. There is also a nurse who is in love with Gokul, but when she gets inconvenient, he even bumps her off in a forest type of scenario. In the meantime, Naina has come in touch with a blind major (war hero), Suraj Singh Rathod (Sanjay Dutt), who tries to give her courage.
Now, Gokul wants to take revenge on Naina, since he believes that she has got the police on his back and is a threat to him, and this leads to the final confrontation between Naina and Gokul.
Dus is a fast-paced action thriller starring a number of Bollywood stars Sanjay Dutt, Sunil Shetty, Abhishek Bachchan, Shilpa Shetty, Pankaj Kapoor, Esha Deol and Zayed Khan. The movie was released in 2005, and was a decent hit (costing around Rs. 20 crore, and earned a revenue of Rs. 43 crore). The movie was directed by Anubhav Sinha, with production by Nitin Manmohan and Sohail Maklai. Music was by Vishal-Shekhar, and Ranjit Barot. The movie was fairly long, being around 2 hours & 20 minutes. Music for the film became quite popular, and the title song of 'Dus Bahane' was a hit. The movie also had a twist, in that one of the popular heroes was sacrificed at the climax of the movie, something that a lot of movies avoid. The movie is about the effort of the Anti Terrorist Cell (working somewhat similar to what you would expect the RAW to function, but without all the glamour that the movie depicts) to stop a massive bombing of which it does not have much information, and for which there are only 10 days left. Sanjay Dutt is the head of this organization, with the name of Siddhant Dheer. Along with him, his younger brother Shashank Dheer (Abhishek Bachchan), Aditya Singh (Zayed Khan), Aditi Kumar (Shilpa Shetty) are the others in the organization. Neha (Esha Deol) is an agent in Canada who starts the entire process, by reporting the existence of a plan being spear-headed by Jambwal, about whom they do not have any information, and whose identity they do not know.
The movie attempts to play the game of multiple double-crossing, about people betraying each other, about people not being who they claim to be. Because the ATS does not know the identity of Jambwal, they cannot even confirm that if they catch a person, whether that person is Jambwal or not. And this happens when they catch Mehendi (Pankaj Kapoor), an agent of Jambwal who is terrified of Jambwal. They are trying to interrogate him to find out more Jambwal, but they land in more problems. The car provided to them by Neha is rigged to explode if it slows down (English movie Speed?), so who is Neha. Zayed Khan is a bomb expert who can detect if a bomb is planted, and what are the chances of defusing it in time. They are further trying to not reveal their plan to the Canadian police, even though the plan involves the terrorists bombing a stadium where a match is ongoing, so as to attack the Indian Prime Minister who will be there to attend the match (on May 10th). They uncover traitors in their midst, although each of these traitors extract a cost. The action peaks in the end, as they are at the stadium where there are multiple bombs planted, and their mission is to get the bombs away without loss of life (with the bombs being constructed of C4, a military explosive (where did terrorists get C4 from?)). The movie is a much watchable movie, be sure to watch (although the logic can sometimes fail).

With the success of Munnabhai MBBS, it was clear that there would be a sequel, it was just waiting for the sequel to come. And so came the sequel in 2006, called Lage Raho Munnabhai (carry on Munnabhai). The movie starred the main set of 2 characters, Munnabhai (Sanjay Dutt) and his sidekick Circuit (Arshad Warsi). The movie showcases the story of a ruffian who becomes infused with Gandhian ideals (under the influence of the spirit of Gandhi), and tries to share the same with others around him, mixed with a Mumbai type way of speaking. Sanjay Dutt is Munnabhai, a Mumbai don who indulges in the familiar show of force, and employs muscles to get his work done. He is also infatuated with a local radio jockey Janhavi (Vidya Balan) and wants to get to meet her. However, how to get a ruffian to meet a beautiful radio jockey is not easy to visualize, and then he hears of a contest where the first person to answer multiple questions asked by her gets to meet her. The contest is about answering questions on Mahatma Gandhi (Bapu), and this is where the mix with Gandhian ideology starts to happen.
How does a local hood answer questions about Mahatma Gandhi ? Well, he does this by kidnapping a group of professors by force, and then asking them to answer the questions (and of course, if a professor answers the question correctly, he would get a prize). So, Munnabhai gets the answers correctly, and being highly nervous, manages to make it to the radio station to meet his lady love. He presents himself as an expert in Gandhian ideology, and impresses her to the extent that she takes him with her to present a lecture on Gandhian philosophy to a community of senior citizens (after taking a massive crash course in Gandhian ideology). In this time period, Gandhi appears to him and offers to help him, as long as Munnabhai does everything that Gandhi asks him to do. And so starts the experiment of a underworld don with Gandhi's spirits, in which he comes much closer to Janhavi and even hosts a radio problem along with her where he expounds the logic of Gandhian ideals and offers to solve the problems of people. And it is here that the movie is mesmerizing, bringing forth the ideals of Gandhi's truths in various stories; the story about the guy who loses his father's money in the stock market and is contemplating suicide, and who calls Munnabhai as a lost soul is incredible, heart moving. The solution is typically Gandhian. The twist in the main plot is of course the builder Lucky Singh (Boman Irani) who wants to get the old people evicted from the house so that he can gift the house to his daughter's future father-in-law Kulbhushan Kharbanda. He employs Munnabhai and Circuit to get this done, and uses a time when Munnabhai has gone with Janhavi and the old folks to Goa, with circuit emptying the house (not knowing that this was something that Munnabhai would not have wanted). When Munnabhai gets back, he is shocked, but Lucky Singh is unwilling to give the house back. And so starts the attempt by Munnabhai to use Gandhian philosophy to force Lucky Singh to give the house back - in the midst of this, Munnabhai is forced to confront the truth and tell Janhavi all about himself and the truth (and of course she leaves him). However, it is this Gandhigiri that allows Munnabhai to eventually win out and use the power of truth to solve his problems. The movie inspired a large number of people to adopt Gandhian practices to try to solve their problems.

Munnabhai MBBS (released in 2003) was a movie that gave a new lease of life to the career of Sanjay Dutt. His depiction of a hood / gangster with a heart of gold (it helped that they did not show almost any depiction of violence from his end) earned a lot of applause, and most viewers empathized with the character. Add in a humorous side-kick called circuit (played pretty well by Arshad Warsi), and you have a movie that did incredibly well, spawning multiple sequels (the released 'Lage Raho Munnabhai' and the yet-to-be-released 'Muhhabhai Chale America'). The movie was also very different from anything that had a Vidhu Vinod Chopra touch (he has always made intense, emotional movies); this could be because Chopra was not the director, the movie being directed by Rajkumar Hirani.
The movie won a fair number of awards in 2004, including Filmfare Critics Award for Best Movie, and also won awards in the Zee film awards. The movie also won the National Film Award for Best Popular Film (something that is pretty important for a movie to get). The movie also was one of the last movies where the late Sunil Dutt played a role. Munnabhai MBBS core message is about caring for people, whether they be patients (including terminal ones), or they can be other people you come into contact with (including complete strangers). It's about this local dada called Munna Bhai. He does not want his parents (Sunil Dutt and Rohini Hattangadi) to know the truth about him, and since his father had always wanted him to be a doctor, he keeps up the pretence of being a doctor. This pretence was successful till the time that Sunil Dutt met his old friend, J S Asthana (the dean of a medical college and hospital - Imperial Institute of Medical Sciences) and arranged the marriage between Sanjay Dutt and Asthana's daughter, chinki (Gracy Singh). Dr. Asthana finds out Sanjay Dutt's reality and rejects the marriage, while insulting Sunil Dutt. Sunil Dutt is very angry with Sanjay and leaves back for his village. Now, Sanjay Dutt wants to become a doctor, and arranges to get top score in an entrance test through the forced help of Dr. Rustam Pavri (Kurush Deboo). He succeeds with top score, but does not know that this is the same college where his enemy, Dr. Asthna is the head. And thus begins the struggle between them, where Dr. Asthana is convinced that Munna (Murli Prasad Sharma) is there by fraud, and Murli wants to frustrate the Dean. In the midst of all this, he also gets attracted to the attractive Doctor Suman (who he does not know is Chinki). The movie is very enjoyable, especially as you get to see how Sanjay spreads the magic of the 'Jaadu ki jhappi' (the loving hug), which removes anger, spreads the healing power of friendship and love, and gets more people getting charmed by him. However, in the end, Munna realizes that being a Doctor is a noble profession and he is not certainly a doctor and leaves the hospital, making Dr. Asthana happy. However, there is an element of magic when Munna is leaving, as the long supposed brain dead patient Anand (whom Munna used to specially care for) regains his powers of speech, inspiring Dr. Suman to criticize her father. In the end, Murli marries Dr. Suman, and also manages to convert Dr. Asthana.
