Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman (1992)

Ranju Ban Gaya Gentleman is one of the early Shahrukh movies, made before he became the King Khan and one of the hottest property of Bollywood. The movie has a fresh feel to it, being made (director: Aziz Mirza) when there was not so much money riding on Shahrukd Khan and movies could afford to skip the current formula of hard core masala, breakneck action, and so on. The movie has a nice flow to it, with a simplistic story set mainly around ambition. One needs to remember that this was 1992, when India was still totally under the grip of socialism, and movies high-lighted naked ambition as something bad and ugly, something that could cause a person to loose their morals and their bearings.

Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman (1992)

And so it is in this movie, where the good is represented in the purity of the chawl girl, Renu (Juhi Chawla) who is sweet, supporting, pure as opposed to the crassness portrayed by the rich girl Sapna (Amrita Singh) who has fallen for the freshness of Shahrukh Khan. However, because she is rich, she is portrayed as manipulative, willing to use her power and pull to pull Raju away from Renu and towards her. The movie also has a terrific portrayal by Nana Patekar who plays a street performer, incredibly wise.
The movie starts with Raju Mathur, a god loving young man appearing in Bombay to make his career over here as an engineer. He however is not able to contact the relative on whom he was depending (relative not present), and sleeps the night in a temple. Jai (Nana Patekar) offers him advice and support, including a place to stay. In the chwal, he meets Renu (Juhi Chawla), an assistant to the rich Chabbria (Navin Nishchol). Raju gets a job, and also gets the attention of Chabbra's rich daughter, Sapna (Amrita Singh).
She starts him on the way up, getting him better work and feeding his ambition, and at the same time, taking him away from Renu. And then he gets the responsibility for a bridge, a major project for him. However, unknown to him, his opponents conspire to replace good construction material with inferior material, and the inevitable happens. The bridge collapses, and people die. He is pointed out as the responsible person, and in the ultimate compromise, he blames the tragedy on other people, including the people in the chawl where he used to live.
However, not everything is lost. He realizes how much he has changed, and where his ambition has brought him (including losing the people whom he used to treasure and who were his true friends). And so he turns back, and essentially is shown as becoming back to what he was - not an ambition driven cold professional.

Video of the songs from the movie (music by Jatin Lalit; lyrics by Dev Kohli, Mahendra Dehlavi, Madan Pal, Manoj Darpan, Vinoo Mahendra, Minoo):
