Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gam (also known as K3G or KKKG) was a much awaited movie from the Karan Johar stable since it promised to bring together the 2 biggest stars of Bollywood, Amitabh Bachchan and Shahrukh Khan. In addition, the movie would also star the very infrequently seen Jaya Bachchan, and a bonus would be the hearthrob and hunk, Hrithik Roshan. Kajol and Kareena Kapoor would complete the list of all the star cast.
The movie, set on the complicated relationship in a family bound by traditions, and yet caring and loving each other, was a big hit. Although it also true that there are a number of people who can't stand the movie, given that the story line is very limited, and the central theme of the movie is the distance between the father and the son due to the ego clashes between them (more due to the father not willing to bend his principles). The movie is also about the husband-wife relationship and about the expectations vs. responsibility of this relationship.
Right from the beginning, Yashovardhan Raichand (Bachhan) and wife Nandini (Jaya) have set family norms based on certain principles and family traditions that are really inflexible. Yashovardhan is the typical patriarch who runs the family, and his word is law. Nandini respects his authority, but is more believing in the love between her and her sons, and that is the abiding principle of her life. They have 2 sons, Rahul (Shah Rukh) who is adopted, and Rohan (Hrithik Roshan), who is younger to Shahrukh by 8 years. Because Rahul is adopted, he is even more dedicated to his parents and will obey every wish of theirs.
Things are on track, and Yashovardhan is looking to get Rahul married to Rani Mukherjee (in a guest role) who is of a similar status and has even agreed to the match. And then disaster strikes. Shahrukh falls in love with Anjali (Kajol), a bubbly but clumsy girl from Chandni Chowk (and daughter of a local shop-keeper Anupam Kher). She for some time remains unaware of his love, but slowly realizes it. However, Yashovardhan will have none of it, and forbids this love. And this is where it would have remained had tragedy not struck in the shape of the death of Anupam Kher. Shahrukh marries Anajali, but the ego and conflict between father and son drives Shahrukh far away, to England.
The father has his ego, but Nandini can only suffer and pine over the loss of her elder son. It is then that the younger son, leaning about the actual reasons for Shahrukh not being there in the house, promises to get him back. And so he sets out, finding them and making friends through Kareena (playing a girl of her age, with all the pomp and show). Eventually Kajol finds out, and then Shahrukh also finds out (when Hrithik teacher Shahrukh's son this family saying "Jab bhi tumhe kuchh pana ho, kuchh hasil karna ho to humesha apne man ki suno aur agar man se bhi koi jawab na aye to apni ankhe band karo aur apne ma-baba ka nam lo … har muskil asan ho jayegi, har manzil nazdeek lagegi aur jeet tumhari hogi.").
And then the return of Shahrukh to the family home, well inspired by an act of rebellion by Nandini who tells her husband that the consequences of his actions led to grief and suffering; and eventually he realizes the love within him.
The movie has plenty of emotional scenes, and the director uses them to the maximum in order to cover over a script that is not very detailed. The music is good, with some hummable and hit songs (music by Jatin-Lalit, Aadesh Shrivastava and Sandesh Shandilya; lyrics by Sameer, Choreography by Farah Khan).

Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman (1992)
Ranju Ban Gaya Gentleman is one of the early Shahrukh movies, made before he became the King Khan and one of the hottest property of Bollywood. The movie has a fresh feel to it, being made (director: Aziz Mirza) when there was not so much money riding on Shahrukd Khan and movies could afford to skip the current formula of hard core masala, breakneck action, and so on. The movie has a nice flow to it, with a simplistic story set mainly around ambition. One needs to remember that this was 1992, when India was still totally under the grip of socialism, and movies high-lighted naked ambition as something bad and ugly, something that could cause a person to loose their morals and their bearings.
And so it is in this movie, where the good is represented in the purity of the chawl girl, Renu (Juhi Chawla) who is sweet, supporting, pure as opposed to the crassness portrayed by the rich girl Sapna (Amrita Singh) who has fallen for the freshness of Shahrukh Khan. However, because she is rich, she is portrayed as manipulative, willing to use her power and pull to pull Raju away from Renu and towards her. The movie also has a terrific portrayal by Nana Patekar who plays a street performer, incredibly wise.
The movie starts with Raju Mathur, a god loving young man appearing in Bombay to make his career over here as an engineer. He however is not able to contact the relative on whom he was depending (relative not present), and sleeps the night in a temple. Jai (Nana Patekar) offers him advice and support, including a place to stay. In the chwal, he meets Renu (Juhi Chawla), an assistant to the rich Chabbria (Navin Nishchol). Raju gets a job, and also gets the attention of Chabbra's rich daughter, Sapna (Amrita Singh).
She starts him on the way up, getting him better work and feeding his ambition, and at the same time, taking him away from Renu. And then he gets the responsibility for a bridge, a major project for him. However, unknown to him, his opponents conspire to replace good construction material with inferior material, and the inevitable happens. The bridge collapses, and people die. He is pointed out as the responsible person, and in the ultimate compromise, he blames the tragedy on other people, including the people in the chawl where he used to live.
However, not everything is lost. He realizes how much he has changed, and where his ambition has brought him (including losing the people whom he used to treasure and who were his true friends). And so he turns back, and essentially is shown as becoming back to what he was - not an ambition driven cold professional.
Video of the songs from the movie (music by Jatin Lalit; lyrics by Dev Kohli, Mahendra Dehlavi, Madan Pal, Manoj Darpan, Vinoo Mahendra, Minoo):

Kal Ho Na Ho
Kal Ho Na Ho is easy to identify as a movie from the Karan Johar camp. It has Shahrukh Khan, some nice peppy songs, a lot of emotion, and plenty of color; and increasingly so, the setting is more and more outside of India (Kal Ho Na Ho being set in the cosmopolitan capital of the world - New York). And you could be forgiven for forgetting that the director of the movie is Nikhil Advani and not Karan Johar (he is the producer). The movie has music by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, lyrics by Javed Akhtar, and songs sung by Sonu Nigam, Alka Yagnik, Richa Sharma, Udit Narayan, Sadhna Sargam, Shankar Mahadevan, Sujata Bhattacharya, Vasundhara Das, Kay Kay, Loy Mendosa, Shaan, Ravi "Rags" Khote.
It is very easy to see why there is a good successful combo of Karan Johar and Shahrukh Khan, they get the best out of each other; Shahrukh gets a power packed role that would emphasize his status as the King Khan, while Karan gets the benefit of the full flow of the Khan charisma and gets the audiences and money rolling in. There are other stars such as Saif Ali Khan, Preity Zinta, Jaya Bachchan, Sushma Seth, etc, and they do turn in good performances, but these are mostly complementary to the main role of Shahrukh Khan's character.
There is a lot of doubt about whether this movie is based on the Rajesh Khanna character in the movie 'Anand'. There are hints a plenty to support this thought, but the extent of the role is different and the scenario is different. Anand was more about the inter-action between the 2 characters of Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh Bachchan, while Kal Ho Na Ho was all about the way that this character brings drastic change to the one family.
The movie is also structured in this way such that the first half is all about the way that this character is introduced into the whole scenario, and how he actually starts to bring about a change in the way that the family dynamics play out; while the second half is more about emotions - in fact it eventually moves into a heavy dose of emotions, and positively becomes a tear-jerker in the end.
The movie is about this family of Naina (Preity Zinta). She lives with her mother Jennifer (Jaya Bachchan), and her grandmother (Sushma Seth), and these two continuously spar with each other. This causes an immense amount of regular tension in the house, and has a very negative effect on Naina, her younger brother and sister. In addition, Sushma Seth cannot stand the younger grandchild since she is adopted. Jennifer is trying to run the household on the income she is making from a struggling restaurant. The only bright spark in Naina's life is her friend, the wannabe cool dude, Rohit (Saif Ali Khan).
And then the magic begins; in enters Aman (Shahrukh Khan). He slowly gets everybody to warm up to him, causes a transformation in Naina (making her more confident and self-beautiful), he causes a massive improvement in the restaurant business, and ultimately he causes a warming up of relations between Jennifer and her mother-in-law by explaining the reality behind the suicide of Jennifer's husband and the actual family link of Gia, the adopted youngest daughter.
But just when everything starts to seem better, then you realize that things are not what they are. A critical illness explains the meaning of the name of the movie 'Kal Ho Na Ho', and you start to get a contrast between the time of happiness as the relation between Rohit and Naina reaches marriage and the death throes of Aman.

Lyrics:
Kal Ho Na Ho (Sung by Sony Nigam)
Har Ghadi Badal Raha Hai Roop Zindagi
Chaav Hai Kahhi Hai Dhoop Zidnagi
Har Pal Yahan
Jee Bhar Jiyo Jo Hai Sama
Kal Ho Na Ho
Har Ghadi Badal Raha Hai Roop Zindagi
Chaav Hai Kahhi Hai Dhoop Zidnagi
Har Pal Yahan
Jee Bhar Jiyo Jo Hai Sama
Kal Ho Na Ho
Chaahe Jo Tumhe Poore Dil Se
Milta Hai Woh Mushkil Se
Aisa Jo Koi Kahin Hai
Bas Vahi Sabse Hasin Hai
Us Haath Ko Tum Thaam Lo
Woh Meherbaan Kal Ho Na Ho
Har Pal Yahan
Jee Bhar Jiyo Jo Hai Sama
Kal Ho Na Ho
Palko Ke Leke Saaye
Paas Koi Jo Aaye
Lakh Sambhalo Paagal Dil Ko
Dil Dhadke Hi Jaaye
Par Sochlo Is Pal Hai Jo
Woh Dastan Kal Ho Na Ho
Har Pal Yahan
Jee Bhar Jiyo Jo Hai Sama
Kal Ho Na Ho
Har Pal Yahan
Jee Bhar Jiyo Jo Hai Sama
Kal Ho Na Ho

Cheti Apne Nahi Mil De
Ja Banno Pave Khushiyan Te Dil Dariyan Tu
Pave Armaan Sab Dil De
Tum Ho Gham Ko Chupaye
Main Hoon Sar Ko Jhukaye
Tum Bhi Chup Ho
Main Bho Chup Hoon
Kaun Kise Samjhaye
Ab Dooriyan Itni Hain To
Milna Yahan Kal Ho Naa Ho
Ab Dooriyan Itni Hain To
Milna Yahan Kal Ho Naa Ho
Tu Vekh Tai Lai Aj Raj Ke
Apne Sariyan Nu
Cheti Apne Nahi Mil De
Ja Banno Pave Khushiyan Te Dil Dariyan Tu
Pave Armaan Sab Dil De
Sach Hai Ke Dil To Dukha Hai
Hamne Magar Socha Hai
Dil Ko Hai Gham Kyon
Aankh Hai Nam Kyon
Hona Hi Tha Jo Hua Hai
Us Baat Ko Jaane Bhi Do
Jiska Nishaan Kal Ho Naa Ho
Har Pal Yahan Je Bhar Jiyo
Jo Hai Sama Kal Ho Naa Ho

Badli hui si meri ada hai
Kuch to hua hai, kuch ho gaya hai

Achchha rehta hai mood bhi tab se
Hanske milta hoon aaj kal sab se
Khush ho gaya hai jo bhi mila hai

Dhyaan ab apna zyaada rakhta hoon
Sochta hoon main kaisa lagta hoon

Pretty Woman (Sung by Shankar Mahadevan and Ravi "Rags" Khote)
--MALE 1--
Maine jise abhi abhi dekha hai
Kaun hai voh anjaani
Use jitna dekhoon utna sochoon
Kya use main keh doon, hit it!
(Maine jise abhi abhi dekha hai
Kaun hai voh anjaani) - 2
Voh hai koi kali ya koi kiran
Ya hai koi kahaani
Use jitna dekhoon utna sochoon
Kya use main keh doon
Pretty woman, hey
Pretty woman, dekho dekho na pretty woman
Pretty woman, dekhte ho na pretty woman
Pretty woman, tum bhi kaho na pretty woman
Ho maine jise abhi abhi dekha hai
Kaun hai voh anjaani
Voh hai koi kali ya koi kiran
Ya hai koi kahaani
Use jitna dekhoon utna sochoon
Kya use main keh doon
Pretty woman, dekho dekho na pretty woman
Pretty woman, dekhte ho na pretty woman
Pretty woman, tum bhi kaho na oh pretty woman
--MALE 2--
Yo pretty woman!
Listen up girl why you feel this way
Don't you see the sunshine comin out today
You gotta feel it right just like day after night
Don't let the sunshine out of your sight
Cause I can feel you here can you feel me
When I say that I can feel you here
Can you feel me here when I say
I'm crazy about you pretty woman!
--MALE 1--
Sone ka rang hai, sheeshe ka ang hai
Jo dekhe dang hai kya kahoon
Hairaan main bhi hoon
Yeh kya andaaz hai, itna kyoon naaz hai
Is mein kya raaz hai kya kahoon
Ho, voh to pal mein khush hai pal mein khafa
Badle voh rang har ghadi
Par jo bhi dekhoon roop uska
Lagti hai pyaari badi
Use jitna dekhoon utna sochoon
Kya use main keh doon, pretty woman
Pretty woman, dekho dekho na pretty woman
Pretty woman, dekhte ho na pretty woman
Pretty woman, tum bhi kaho na pretty woman
Ho aankhon mein hai nasha, zulfon mein hai ghata
Pehle humne ada yeh haseen dekhi na thi kahin
Dekhi jo yeh pari masti dil mein bhari
Hai yeh jaadugari ya nahin
Ho, na to jaanoon kya hai naam na jaanoon main pata
Par itna hai maine jaana
Jise dekh le ek nazar bharke
Usko kar de voh deewaana
Use jitna dekhoon utna sochoon
Kya use main keh doon
(Pretty woman, dekho dekho na pretty woman
Pretty woman, dekhte ho na pretty woman
Pretty woman, tum bhi kaho na oh pretty woman) - 2

Lamhe (1991) - Anil Kapoor and Sridevi
Lamhe was released in 1991 under the banner of Yashraj Films, directed by Yash Chopra. The movie was acclaimed, won the Best Film Award at the Filmfare awards, but failed to click at the box office and did not earn much money. It is widely believed that 'Lamhe' was far ahead of its time, and the viewing public was not comfortable with the basic tenet of a story where a person loved a girl, but eventually married her daughter (a daughter who grew up based on his support). I remember at that time that people were somewhat shocked at the thought that a person could marry someone who he had helped bring up.
Now things would be better and audiences are willing to understand and comprehend the movie. That this was not a story that suggested some form of incest, but is in fact a beautiful love story all about emotions and the tenderness of a love story in which the girl is determined. Hence, over a period of time, this movie has not been entirely forgotten. I can occasionally find people talking about the movie. Music of the film has been given by Shiv-Hari.
The movie had some great music, and pretty good acting by the 4 main actors; Sridevi (in a double role), Anil Kapoor (as a young and also as a more mature role), Waheeda Rehman in a great role, and Anupam Kher. It was primarily these 4 actors around whom the whole movie revolves. There are some great locations in Rajasthan in the movie.
The movie is about the character of Anil Kapoor. He is a very rich orphan, living in the care of his governess Waheeda Rehman. He goes to Rajasthan where he meets Pallavi (Sridevi) and falls madly for her. She however is in love with an Air Force officer Deepak Malhotra although this is a secret. At this time, tragedy strikes since Pallavi's father dies of a heart attack after losing his property to relatives in a court case. Viren (Anil Kapoor) promises to take care of her, and even though he is distraught over her loving somebody else, he gets her married to Deepak. (There is a great scene where Viren slaps Pallavi's greedy relatives while negotiating over retaining Pallavi's property till her marriage).
However, both Pallavi and Deepak die in an accident a year later and leave a infant daughter Pooja. Viren can't bear to look at her since her birthday is the day of Pallavi's death. However, as Pooja grows up under the love of the Daija (Waheeda), she starts developing a crush on Viren (Kunwarji as she calls him). He does not reciprocate and in fact is seeing a girl called Anita who wants to marry him although Viren is not sure. However, he is getting affected by Pooja's resemblance to Pallavi and also getting attracted by her vivaciousness.
The rest of the movie is about how Viren works out his feelings, being guided to some extent by his close friend Anupam Kher. In the end, you can guess what happens, but the overall direction of the movie and the story is sensitive, without too much extravaganza. The last scene at the fort is great, where he confesses his love for Pooja and not Pallavi.

Aaja Nachle: Madhuri could not have asked for a better comeback vehicle
Aaja Nachle got a shock on the day of release when an allegedly casteist remark caused various state Governments in North India to ban it. However, when the Director apologized and got the remark (in a song) removed, then things were fine and the bans were lifted. At the same time, this movie got a lot of criticism over many different points:
1. Madhuri got so much to do in the script that one hardly got to see much of the dancing that one would expect in a movie such as this
2. Acting by some talented people such as Konkona Sen was not upto the mark; her role was to a large extent that of a empty headed small town girl. Of course, there was some balance in the sense that she played the role to a beauty, but then when she has given such good performances in the part, she could have been given a role with more depth
3. The fact that the story hardly had much of song and dance, with the script giving a wide exposure to Madhuri as she threaded her way through the small town, there was not enough time to have more song and dance
4. Then there is some criticism of the way that the town has been setup, with a lot of critics panning it for the lack of realism
I just watched the movie today, and I do not have the same amount of negativism. I liked the movie. The movie is an excellent comeback vehicle for Madhuri in the sense that it gives her a woman centered role, that does not make her pretend to be a 25 year old, and yet brings back the 2 elements that most people remember - her dance and her smile. And there is a hint of the sensuality, while not being so obvious and in your face as used to be when she was in her prime.
The story is fairly simple; a small town girl wants to learn dancing, and while doing that, she falls for a foreigner. Against opposition, she runs away to America, and soon gets divorced (she is already estranged from her parents). She has made a life for herself over there with her daughter, when she gets a phone call telling her that the dance school guru is gravely ill. She rushes back, and soon discovers that the dance school is in danger of being leveled to make way for a shopping mall. It has not been attracting students and is in a derelict and abandoned condition, so it is a logical conclusion to tear it down (with the move being spearheaded by the local royalist MP (Akshaye Khanna) and the builder (Irfan Khan)).
Now the quest for Madhuri is to negotiate the saving of the dance floor, and she makes a deal; if in 2 months, she can get a successful full dance involving local people, then the deal will not go through and the dance floor is saved. What follows is an absolute effort where Madhuri uses whatever means she can to get her way; whether that involves getting local political opposition squelched through the promise of an issue in the elections, or by negotiating getting her hero (who is actually a small time goonda), and so on. She used a local colored rickshaw to get more locals involved.
One of the weaknesses of the movie is the fact that given this is Madhuri's comeback vehicle, it seems excessively so; Madhuri is almost there in seemingly every scene. As a result, you see other characters without their getting much of a chance to develop. After all, you are going to see a movie, and when there are characters such as Ranvir Shorey and Vinay Pathak, you expect to see more of them. Similarly, Akshaye Khanna is there in a few scenes, but his character seems very flat, with a smile almost permanently plastered on his face. I hope that Akshaya Khanna had a guest role, because if this was a full role, then it just was not long enough.
The movie is directed by Anil Mehta, and music by Salim - Sulaimaan Merchant. Lyrics are by Jaideep Sahni, Piyush Mishra and Asif Ali Beg.

Dhan Dhana Dhan Goal: Disappoints
Quite a few of you would have seen 'Chak De' and been impressed with the overall tone of the movie, the way that a coach tries to overcome his history and blend a team together inspite of their individual differences, egos, and ambitions. And the result is gripping, with a good dose of patriotism possible. Dhan Dhana Dhan Goal seems to suffer on this count. The movie, even though set in the United Kingdom, tries the same logic with a disparate team of people, hard up, trying to make a last ditch attempt to pull themselves up and win a championship on which their team depends. However, even though I liked the thought of the movie itself, given that there did not seem to be much of a market for movies that explored the sports theme without much of a romance, villains, and other commercial aspects. After all, how often do you get to see a movie looking at South Asians based in London, and with no reference to going back to India, or with a romance, but purely based on the life of people in that location ?
And this brings me to a fact that is the killer of the movie; and when I mean killer, I don't mean in a positive way. Any movie that shows Indians in a foreign land has to have some element of racism thrown in, so you have almost (in fact all) goras being inherently racist, and this movie has that element in a very strong way. And to counter this, you have the South Asians grouping together, being inversely racist in their own way. Hard to think that this is the England who had a cricket captain pf Indian origin. And yet this is the central message of the movie; you have no future unless you are with your own, anybody who rebels against this culture seems to be seen as betraying your own culture. Kinda hard to see how you can integrate in another country unless you are able to get away from me, my own and be able to be open to integrate with people from other cultures. After all, Indians have always prided themselves in being able to integrate people from other cultures.
The story could have been so good; After all, here is this old club, now on hard times, called Southall United Football club, whom Arshad Warsi is trying to keep alive. However, the local council sees a large stadium, and wants to appropriate the location to build a shopping area; they could not have tried this if the club was winning, but it does not, and no one would care if this happened.
So now Arshad Warsi has to get the club players (an assorted mix of characters such as Raj Zutshi who are butchers, and other real life people when they are not playing football) to win the league, at a time when nobody would give them a chance at winning. They manage to guilt an older player Boman Irani to be their coach, and he reluctantly agrees. They also rope in Bipasha Basu (Arshad's cousin) as the team physio. For Bipasha, this must be the most non-sexy role that she has ever done in her career.
And so on, they lose the first match handily, with the natural recriminations among team members that happen in a losing team. What they need to do is to get a natural up-and-coming striker such as Sunny (John Abraham) into their team. But he is trying out for a good team, and won't even look at Southall United. His own parents consider him a traitor for not playing for Southall United, with his dad telling him that he will eventually see the edge of racism, which he does when he is not considered for better club. And then he joins Southall United, and starts bringing them up the league with wins, even though he does not get along with Arshad Warsi (and of course, during the whole movie he has a self-confident smirk on his face). He also starts developing a romance with Bipasha, and the scenes where Arshad realizes this and get uncomfortable are cute.
However, Dileep Tahil, who is a sports commentator and also working for the local council, gets John a contract with a new, much better club, at a much higher price and John switches. He gets abused from everybody for being a traitor, but really can't understand why he is being vilified (after all, he is born and brought up in England, and would consider any club to be a natural club, not necessarily a club populated by South Asians).
And now, the team is without their ace striker. So what happens ? DO they lose or do they win, and what happens to John ? Interesting questions.
Boman's role is good, but could have been better. The location is Old Trafford stadium where be brings the team members and shows them the super-stars and their dressing room is inspiring, but there are few moments in the movie that capture and hold attention. And I never could understand why they needed to have an item song in the movie ? It would be almost like the producers said that there should be an item number, and this seemed like the best time to have one. The movie is directed by Vivek Agnihotri, music is by Pritam Chakraborty and lyrics by Javed Akhtar

Johnny Gaddar: A delightful movie
(It is so difficult to write about a thriller movie like Johnny Gaddar without giving the story away, so if you feel that you are losing your suspense of the story, stop reading)
If you liked the Saif Ali Khan and Urmila Matondkar movie 'Ek Hasina Thi', you would like Johnny Gadar. There is an element to this movie that makes it a great thriller, including the part about there being a lot of suspense for the characters in the movie while the viewer knows everything. There are no spectacular action scenes, or expensive stunts; it's all about putting in an element of suspense in the interactions. What seems important is to have a slick story line, although the second half does stretch the story line a bit. However, it was interesting to learn that Director Sriram Raghavan did not shoot with a bound script; apparently they just had the beginning, the middle part, and the end; the rest of the script was improvised.
The director is clearly inspired from James Hadley Chase (if you have read some of the novels of Chase, it will seem apparent). There are people of all shades, but rarely do you come across a true person or a person who is all white without any shades of grey in his character. This can't be more true than in this movie, given that all the characters have strong shades of grey in their character. Somehow, the movie seems more realistic, as you realize that this is what real people are like.
The casting is decent, with some good roles by the characters of Neil Mukesh, Vinay Pathak, Zakir Hussain, Ashwini Kaleskar. Rimi Sen does a good role of the wife of Shardul (Zakir Hussain) in love with Vikram (Neil Mukesh), but absolutely terrified of her husband and what he would do if he got to know.
The movie is about a gang of people who need to collect a lot of money to avail of a get rich quick scheme, and collect Rs. 2.5 crore. Vikram, the youngest of the lot, decides to use this opportunity to loot all the cash and steals the money from Daya Shetty in a train. He also kills Daya by accident, and thus starts the quest to keep ahead of the others (who don't know who stole the money, but suspect each other). Mukesh's first kill is by accident, but after this, he slowly kills the others one by them, and very few of them really suspect him, till almost the end when they get killed. But, in the end, as in Chase's novels, the killer or thief can't really get away, and he is killed (and that too by mistake by the widow of one of the persons he killed).
The movie remains fairly taut, and the tension is apparent as things move ahead. You know who did the killing, but still wait to see as to how he gets away from the various gang members who want to find out who did the killing and then kill the thief. A slightly weak point in the movie is the character of Dharmendra, you expect the leader of such a gang to be much more villainous and be more able to smell out who the killer actually is.
Music is by Shankar Mahadevan, Ehsaan Noorani, Loy Mendonca and Lyrics by Nilesh Mishra, Hardkaur, Jaideep Sahni

Om Shanti Om: An okay masala movie
What can one say about this movie. The previous movie with the combination of Farah Khan doing the direction and Shahrukh Khan doing the production and the lead acting was 'Main Hoon Na'. While a very slick masala movie, nobody could really claim that it was an exceptional movie. And the same message was reinforced for this movie as well, with all the hype before the movie proudly claiming the fact that this will be another entertainer, a pure masala movie (no pretensions at being a social movie or an art movie of any kind).
The movie has some good music, and the first half is pretty interesting. The whole scene is of the 70's type of setting, and I actually quite enjoyed most of this part. The impersonation of the South Indian heroes, the caricature of Manoj Kumar (in spite of the controversy, the touch was amusing). The flow of the movie was very natural, with a young sidey actor, his resourceful friend, and an over-acting mother (although it was a sheer waste of an actress of Kiron Kher's calibre). Shahrukh's acting was enjoyable, whether it be the shy person in front of a superstar whom he adores, or when his dream crashes and he realizes that she is in love with someone else.
It is when Shahrukh gets overly emotional (such as when he is trying to rescue Deepika from a fire) that you realize that you have seen this type of acting before (in almost every movie where there is violence driven from an emotional angle such as Baazigar, and other such movies). Deepika does not have any tough scenes except for the confrontation with her lover, and some of these scenes are shot from a distance and do not allow too much of evaluation of acting talent. She does look good in many of the scenes though. Was a bit disappointed with Arjun Ramphal, since for a person who cold-bloodedly kills his lover (and who is bearing his child), you don't get to feel the menace. It is only when he tells his men that she should not escape the flame that you get to feel the menace (but that is more due to the script rather than acting).
The second half is much more disappointing. Shahrukh Khan does the reincarnation act, and you immediately know that this Karz. But soon, I started feeling shades of Madhumati also involved, and that turned out to be true. The second half seemed much more disjointed, such as Shahrukh Khan's conversion from being somebody who does not believe in the previous birth thing to a person who goes to meet his mother from the previous birth was very sudden (I was thinking that I missed some part of the movie).
Originality in the second half seems missing, and one could easily figure out large sections of the movie based on the earlier movies. The song (to resemble the finale 'Ek Haseena Thi' from Karz does not compare in any way. The death of the villain is not very convincing, although Deepika's double role in this part is adequate.
Farah Khan managed to pull in a large number of special appearances in the movie:

Aankhon Mein Teri Ajab Si Ajab Si
Lyrics:
Ajab Si
Aankhon mein teri
Ajab si ajab si adayein hai
hoo Aankhon mein teri
Ajab si ajab si adayein hai
Dil ko banade jo patang saans se
Yeh teri woh haawaien hai
Aankhon mein teri
Ajab si ajab si adayein hai
hoo Aankhon mein teri
Ajab si ajab si adayein hai
Dil ko banade jo patang saans se
Yeh teri woh haawaien hai
Aai aise raat hai jo
Bahut khush naseeb hai
Chahe jise door se duniya
Woh mere kareeb hai
Kitna kuch kehna hai
Phir bhi hai dil mein
Saawal hai kahin
Sapno mein jo roj kaha hai
Woh phir se kahun ya nahi
Aankhon mein teri
Ajab si ajab si adayein hai
hoo Aankhon mein teri
Ajab si ajab si adayein hai
Dil ko banade jo patang saans se
Yeh teri woh haawaien hai
Tere saath saath aisa….. Koi noor aaya hai
Chand teri roshni ka
Halka sa ek saaya hai
Teri nazaron ne dil ka Kiya jo asar
Asar yeh hua
Abb in mein hi doob ke ho jau paar
Yehi hai Dua
Aankhon mein teri
Ajab si ajab si adayein hai
hoo Aankhon mein teri
Ajab si ajab si adayein hai
Dil ko banade jo patang saans se
Yeh teri woh haawaien hai
Aankhon mein teri
Ajab si ajab si adayein hai

Murder: The movie that launched Mallika Sherawat and Emran Hashmi
Murder was not the debut movie for either Mallika Sherawat or Emraan Hashmi (debut movies being Khwaish for Mallika and Footpath for Imraan Hashmi), but this was the movie that gave a big boost to their film career, and also set their reputations (something that got repeated in future films). So Mallika got the reputation of being ready to do sexy roles involving hot scenes, exposure, kissing, and similar such characteristics, and Emraan got the reputation of a serial kisser. The movie was directed by Anurag Basu under the tutelage of Mahesh Bhatt, and there are signs of the Bhatt effect showing through. The movie is based on the English movie 'Unfaithful'. It does have some great songs and hummable music, and overall is a watch at least once. However if you are watching with family and are hesitant about bold scenes, then don't watch. The movie has bold scenes where required, and does not hesitate to shock in the story about a neglected wife having an affair with a former lover. The movie has music by Anu Malik, and lyrics are by Sayeed Quadri and Rahat Indori.
The movie is different from the usual murder story, and also different from the run of the mill 'B' class movie that seek to titillate the viewer with hot and racy sex scenes. The movie is from a top banner, and presents the story of what happens in a family when a partner starts to feel neglected, and the difference being that the movie does not hesitate in showing some bold sex scenes. Hence, a number of scenes of adultery and betrayal of the marital bond of trust; but with a difference, the innate love between the husband and wife is enough to finally get them out of the mess that they land up in.
The movie is mostly in flashback, with the police investigating a murder of a young disc jockey Sunny (Emraan Hashmi) in Malaysia, and are interrogating people associated with him. They discover the truth about the husband and wife couple of Ashmit Sen (Sudir) and Mallika Sherawat (Simran). Simran used to love Emraan in college, but lost touch with him when he was jailed for assaulting a person over Simran. Sudhir was married to Simran's sister, but when her sister died leaving behind a baby, Simran took on the responsibility and married Sudhir, but there never seemed to be something like true love between them.
At a time when Simran is feeling very neglected and Sudhir does not seem to care, Simran meets Sunny and soon they are having a rollicking affair involving scenes of a fair amount of intimacy. Simran feels very guilty, but keeps on with the affair. Sudir soon starts to suspect something and hires a detective who finds the truth very soon. Sudhir has a confrontation with Sunny, and soon Sunny is dead. At that stage, both husband and wife start to cover for each other, and the rest of the movie is about who is the culprit.

Dhoondega koi bahaana, dhoondega koi nishaana
Haan dhoondega koi bahaana, dhoondega koi nishaana
Dil ka baazaar hai yahan to dil ko dilon se bachaana
Dil ko hazaar baar roka roka roka
Dil ko hazaar baar toka toka toka
Dil hai hawaaon ka jhonka jhonka jhonka
Dil ko bachaana, dhoka na khaana
Dhoka hai pyaar yaar pyaar hai dhoka
Dhoka hai pyaar yaar pyaar hai dhoka
Dil ko hazaar baar roka roka roka
Dil ko hazaar baar toka toka toka
Haan a ha ha ha ha, haan a ha ha ha ha
Haan aa ha, haan aa ha, aa aa aa aa
Dil ko hazaar baar roka roka roka
Kaho Na Kaho
(Kaho na kaho yeh aankhen bolti hain
O sanam o sanam, o mere sanam
Mohabbat ke safar mein yeh sahaara hai
Vafa ke saahilon ka yeh kinaara hai) - 2
(Baadalon se oonchi uraanoon ki
Sab se alag pehechaanoon ki
Use hai pyaar ki kahaani mansoob
Aati jaati saanson ki rawaani mansoob) - 2
Arabic lyrics follow
Kaho na kaho yeh aankhen bolti hain
O sanam o sanam, o mere sanam
Mohabbat ke safar mein tu hamaara hai
Andhere raaston ka tu sitaara hai
Arabic lyrics follow
Tu hi jeene ka sahaara hai
Meri maujon ka kinaara hai
Mere liye yeh jahaan hai tu
Tujhe mere dil ne pukaara hai
Kaho na kaho yeh saansein bolti hain
O sanam o sanam, o mere sanam
Labon pe naam tere bas hamaara hai
Yeh tera dil bhi jaana hamaara hai
Kaho na kaho yeh aankhen bolti hain
O sanam o sanam, o mere sanam
Mohabbat ke safar mein yeh sahaara hai
Vafa ke saahilon ka yeh kinaara hai
(Khwaabon mein tujhko sanwaara hai
Jazbon mein apne utaara hai
Meri yeh aankhen jidhar dekhe
Tera hi chehra nazaara hai) - 4
