Jhuk Gaya Aasman : A delightful masala movie

Jhuk Gaya Aasman is a 1968 film directed by Lekh Tandon. The film stars Rajendra Kumar, Saira Banu, Rajendranath and Prem Chopra. Music is by Shankar Jaikishan, and lyrics by Hasrat Jaipuri. The film is a remake of the Hollywood film Here comes Mr. Jordan. I watched the movie the first time when I was in my school years (am not telling you how far back that was), and I found it to be a ridiculous movie, and yet I have watched it numerous times. It always seems like a great masala movie, a movie that is a total entertainer.
The movie is a bit off the beaten track; it has the familiar stories of a bad younger brother, of a romance between a beautiful outsider and a man of the hills, a devoted friend - but where this movie took the twist into a new area was the concept of dying, then finding out that you died by mistake and having to go into another body where you find that the girl you loved actually hates you; and then the innate goodness taking over and making things fine.
The movie is about this hill town guide on a jeep, Rajendra Kumar. Saira Banu shows up along with friends, and soon they fall in love with promises for later. On the way back when he has dropped her off at the airport, Rajendra Kumar has an accident and can see himself going off to heaven; where he is informed that he is the victim of mistaken identity. He was brought to heaven when it was his lookalike who should have been brought. However, his body has been burnt and he can no longer go back to what he was; he can enter the other body and live that life.
That other guy comes back to life, and of course, he was a bad guy with a worse brother who had tried to kill him and frame Saira Banu (the daughter of the family accountant) for the murder. Saira Banu hates this new version, and Rajendra Kumar sets out to make things better, repairing relations with all the people around him, and he is able to do so as well as defeat the devious younger brother.

Jhuk Gaya Aasman (1968)

The movie is not to be taken very seriously, just watch it and enjoy the entertainment. There is some spendid acting by the lead stars, with Rajendra Kumar playing his double roles to perfection, Saira Banu playing the great looking outsider and then the concerned daughter, and Prem Chopra the not-to-be-reformed villainous role of the younger brother. Rajendranath plays the devoted friend nicely, especially whenever he has to consider the part that his best friend could now be a ghost.

The movie has a few great songs, with a signature sexy bath song dance by Saira Banu

Lyrics for the movie:

Unse Mili Nazar

Unse Mili Nazar
Ki Mere Hosh Udh Gaye
Aisa Hua Asar
Ki Mere Hosh Udh Gaye

Jab Woh Mile Mujhe Paheli Baar
Unse Ho Gayi Aakhen Chaar
Paas Na Baithe Pal Bhar Woh
Phir Bhi Ho Gaya Unse Pyar
Itni Thi Bas Khabar
Ki Mere Hosh Udh Gaye

Unki Taraf Dil Jhukne Laga
Badhke Kadam Phir Rukne Laga
Apne Aap Dum Ghutne Laga
Chaye Woh Iss Kadar
Ki Mere Hosh Ud Gaye

Ghar Mere Aaya Woh Mehemaan
Dil Mein Jagaye Sau Toofan
Dekh Ke Unki Surat Ko
Hay Rah Gayi Mein Hairan
Tadpun Idhar Udhar
Ki Mere Hosh Ud Gaye

Om Shanti Om: An okay masala movie

What can one say about this movie. The previous movie with the combination of Farah Khan doing the direction and Shahrukh Khan doing the production and the lead acting was 'Main Hoon Na'. While a very slick masala movie, nobody could really claim that it was an exceptional movie. And the same message was reinforced for this movie as well, with all the hype before the movie proudly claiming the fact that this will be another entertainer, a pure masala movie (no pretensions at being a social movie or an art movie of any kind).

Om Shanti Om

The movie has some good music, and the first half is pretty interesting. The whole scene is of the 70's type of setting, and I actually quite enjoyed most of this part. The impersonation of the South Indian heroes, the caricature of Manoj Kumar (in spite of the controversy, the touch was amusing). The flow of the movie was very natural, with a young sidey actor, his resourceful friend, and an over-acting mother (although it was a sheer waste of an actress of Kiron Kher's calibre). Shahrukh's acting was enjoyable, whether it be the shy person in front of a superstar whom he adores, or when his dream crashes and he realizes that she is in love with someone else.
It is when Shahrukh gets overly emotional (such as when he is trying to rescue Deepika from a fire) that you realize that you have seen this type of acting before (in almost every movie where there is violence driven from an emotional angle such as Baazigar, and other such movies). Deepika does not have any tough scenes except for the confrontation with her lover, and some of these scenes are shot from a distance and do not allow too much of evaluation of acting talent. She does look good in many of the scenes though. Was a bit disappointed with Arjun Ramphal, since for a person who cold-bloodedly kills his lover (and who is bearing his child), you don't get to feel the menace. It is only when he tells his men that she should not escape the flame that you get to feel the menace (but that is more due to the script rather than acting).
The second half is much more disappointing. Shahrukh Khan does the reincarnation act, and you immediately know that this Karz. But soon, I started feeling shades of Madhumati also involved, and that turned out to be true. The second half seemed much more disjointed, such as Shahrukh Khan's conversion from being somebody who does not believe in the previous birth thing to a person who goes to meet his mother from the previous birth was very sudden (I was thinking that I missed some part of the movie).
Originality in the second half seems missing, and one could easily figure out large sections of the movie based on the earlier movies. The song (to resemble the finale 'Ek Haseena Thi' from Karz does not compare in any way. The death of the villain is not very convincing, although Deepika's double role in this part is adequate.
Farah Khan managed to pull in a large number of special appearances in the movie:

Aankhon Mein Teri Ajab Si Ajab Si

Lyrics:

Ajab Si

Aankhon mein teri
Ajab si ajab si adayein hai
hoo Aankhon mein teri
Ajab si ajab si adayein hai

Dil ko banade jo patang saans se
Yeh teri woh haawaien hai

Aankhon mein teri
Ajab si ajab si adayein hai
hoo Aankhon mein teri
Ajab si ajab si adayein hai

Dil ko banade jo patang saans se
Yeh teri woh haawaien hai

Aai aise raat hai jo
Bahut khush naseeb hai

Chahe jise door se duniya
Woh mere kareeb hai

Kitna kuch kehna hai
Phir bhi hai dil mein
Saawal hai kahin

Sapno mein jo roj kaha hai
Woh phir se kahun ya nahi

Aankhon mein teri
Ajab si ajab si adayein hai
hoo Aankhon mein teri
Ajab si ajab si adayein hai

Dil ko banade jo patang saans se
Yeh teri woh haawaien hai

Tere saath saath aisa….. Koi noor aaya hai
Chand teri roshni ka
Halka sa ek saaya hai
Teri nazaron ne dil ka Kiya jo asar
Asar yeh hua

Abb in mein hi doob ke ho jau paar
Yehi hai Dua

Aankhon mein teri
Ajab si ajab si adayein hai
hoo Aankhon mein teri
Ajab si ajab si adayein hai

Dil ko banade jo patang saans se
Yeh teri woh haawaien hai

Aankhon mein teri
Ajab si ajab si adayein hai
hoo Aankhon mein teri
Ajab si ajab si adayein hai

Dil ko banade jo patang saans se
Yeh teri woh haawaien hai

Karz was a movie from Mukta Arta (Subash Ghai) released in 1980 and was a proper masala thriller, made with all the elements of a proper thriller - it had rebirth, deceit, evil, music, revenge, romance, and so on. The movie starred Rishi Kapoor, Tina Munim, Simi Garewal and Pran. Music was by Laxmikant Pyarelal and lyrics by Anand Bakshi.
Songs of the movie were very famous, and here are the lyrics and videos for some of the most popular songs.

Paisa Ye Paisa

Ek Haseena Thi

Lyrics:

Dard-e-Dil (by Mohammed Rafi)

Dard-E-Dil Dard-E-Jigar Dil Mein Jagaya Aapne
Pehle To Maein Shaayar Tha Aashiq Banaya Aapne

Aapki Madhosh Nazrein Kar Rahi Hain Shaayari
Yeh Ghazal Meri Nahin Yeh Ghazal Hai Aapki
Maine To Bas Woh Likha Jo Kuchh Likhaaya Aapne
Dard-E-Dil Dard-E-Jigar Dil Mein Jagaya Aapne...

Kab Kahan Sab Kho Gayi Jitni Bhi Thi Parchhaiyaan
Uth Gayi Yaaron Ki Mehfil Ho Gayi Tanhaiyaan
Kya Hua Shayad Koi Parda Giraaya Aapne
Dard-E-Dil Dard-E-Jigar Dil Mein Jagaya Aapne...

Aur Thodi Der Mein Bas Hum Judaa Ho Jayenge
Aapko Dhoondunga Kaise Raaste Kho Jayenge
Naam Tak Bhi To Nahin Apna Bataaya Aapne
Dard-E-Dil Dard-E-Jigar Dil Mein Jagaya Aapne

Om Shanti Om (Sung by Kishore Kumar)

Ek hasina thi
Ek deewana tha
Kya umar, kya samaa, kya zamana tha

Ek hasina thi
Hasina thi
Ek deewana tha
Deewana tha
Kya umar, kya samaa, kya zamana tha

Ek din woh mile
Roz milne lage
Ek din woh mile
Roz milne lage
Phir mohabbat huyi
Bas qayamat huyi

Kho gaye tum kahan
Sunke yeh dastaan
Log hairaan hain
Kyunki anjaan hain

Ishq ki woh gali
Baat jiski chali
Us gali mein
Mera aana, jaana tha

Ek hasina thi
Ek deewana tha
Kya umar thi, kya samaa tha, kya zamana tha
Ek hasina thi
Ek deewana tha

Oos hasin ne kaha
Oos hasin ne kaha
Suno jaanewafa
Yeh falak, yeh zameen
Tere bin kuch nahin
Tujhpe marti hoon main
Pyaar karti hoon main

Baat kuch aur thi
Woh nazar-chor thi
Uske dil mein chupi
Chaah daulat ki thi
Pyaar ka woh fakat
Ek bahana tha

Ek hasina thi
Ek deewana tha
Kya umar thi, kya samaa tha, kya zamana tha
Ek hasina thi
Ek deewana tha

Bewafa yaar ne
Apne mehboob se
Aisa dhoka kiya
(aisa dhoka kiya) (dhoka dhoka)
(aisa dhoka kiya) (dhoka dhoka)
Aisa dhoka kiya
Zaher usko diya
(dhoka dhoka dhoka) (dhoka dhoka dhoka)
Zaher usko diya

Mar gaya woh jawan
Mar gaya woh jawan
Ab suno dastaan
Janm leke kahin
Phir woh pahucha wahin
Shakl anjaan thi
Katl hairaan thi
Saamna jab hua
Saamna jab hua
Phir wahi sab hua
Uspe yeh karz tha
Uska yeh farz tha
Farz ko karz apna chukana tha

Madhumati: A great movie with some wonderful music

In the 1950's, the pairing of Dilip Kumar and Vyjanthimala starred in a number of extremely successful movies, many of them classics. Some of them were: Bimal Roy's Devdas, B.R.Chopra's Naya Daur, Nitin Bose's Ganga Jamuna, and Bimal Roy's Madhumati. Madhumati was released in 1958, and won a number of awards for that year:
Filmfare Awards for Best Movie, Best Director (Bimal Roy), Best Actress (Vyjayanthimala), Best Music Director (Salil Choudhury), Best Supporting Actor (Johnny Walker), Best Art Direction, Best Female Playback (Lata Mangeshkar singing "aa ja re pardesiya"), Best Editing (Hrishikesh Mukherjee), and Best Dialogue (Rajinder Singh Bedi). With these number of awards, you can imagine what an impact the movie had.
And the surprising part about all this was that the movie was probably the most commercial movie that Bimal Roy had ever made. It was without doubt one of the most commerically successful movies that Bimal Roy had made, but Bimal Roy was more famous for making his social upliftment movie, with the most famous being Bandini, Sujata, Devdas, Do Bigha Zameen. Just a look at some of these movies can show you that these were some of the movies that made the 1950's the era of socially hard-hitting movies; where some of the romance of India's independence had gone away to be replaced by a much harder look at the state of India's society.
Madhumati
The movie had all the elements of a movie that was made for commercial success, it had a villain that you could hate from the depths of your heart Ugranaryan (Pran), a comic star (Johnny Walker), a dashing young hero who pines away for his departed love (Dilip Kumar), some incredible songs, a story dealing with reincarnation, with revenge and a person looking exactly like a twin (if you put all these elements into a modern movie, you can make a movie exactly like the movies you make today). The difference, and what makes this movie an incredible movie, is the direction of Bimal Roy. The movie has an incredible look and feel, and it helps that the lead cast of Dilip Kumar, Vyjanthimala and Pran gave some very good performances. Bimal Roy gives this film a spooky look with some effective use of fogs, mist and a storyline that dances between the real world and the supernatural.
Imagine a horror movie where 2 friends are stuck in the middle of nowhere in a storm after their car breaks down. They approach an old haveli (mansion) and decide to spend the night over there, and the door opens on its own; but wait, this is where the horror story ends. Inside, Dilip Kumar suddenly starts remembering what has happened in his previous birth, and it is connected to this place. A voice starts sounding all around him, “Aaja re pardesi, Main to kab se khadi is paar”. And then he starts recounting the story of his previous life.
And so the story goes, .. Dilip Kumar starts working as the manager of a timber firm, and his boss is Pran. The two don't get along well, since Dilip Kumar is not as respectful of what Pran wants. In the same area lives Vyjanthimala, innocent in the true sense. She is totally care-free, one with nature, close to birds, and also incredibly beautiful. They fall in love, although Madhumati (Vyjanthimala) is also desired by Pran, and since Pran does not like Anand (Dilip Kumar), he has an added interest in getting her to himself. In the meantime, Anand has met her father and assured him that he will marry Madhumati.
And then the pivotal theme, where Anand and Madhumati's father have to go out of the village, and then Pran traps Madhumati in the haveli. She is trying to run, but cannot get out, and then runs into a corridor, and ... then the scene ends. When Anand comes back, he confronts Pran, but does not get anything other than a beating. When wandering as a tragic lost lover, he comes across Madhavi, an exact double of Madhumati. She is a friendly sort, and when he lays out his story, she agrees to help him in getting revenge and getting Pran arrested.
So, they lay out a plan where Madhavi will approach Pran in the form of Madhumati, with the feeling that this will scare Pran into admitting his mis-deeds and get punishment. Plan goes spectacularly well, and Madhavi scares Pran into admitting his deeds (and it is also revealed that Madhumati had committed suicide to save her honor). And then the twist, at this point Madhavi comes and says that she got late, so who was the Madhavi who made Pran confess ?
The music of this film was great, so am attaching the songs below:

Madhumati - Suhana Safar

Madhumati - Jungle mein more nacha

Madhumati - Aaja re pardesi

Madhumati - Dil tadap tadap

Madhumati - Bichhwa

Madhumati - Zulmi sang aankh ladi

Madhumati - Ghadi ghadi mora dil

Revenge and rebirth drama: Karz

I must admit, this is a great movie. I watch this with great abandon every time it comes on TV, and the songs are very hummable. This is another movie by Subhash Ghai, and was a super-hit at its time. Release in 1980, it stars Rishi Kapoor, Tina Munim, Simi Garewal (negative role), Pran and others.
The story of the movie encompasses both revenge and rebirth, so you should leave aside your logic when watching this movie. Rishi Kapoor is a singer and an orphan, and fairly successful. He starts getting strange headaches and glimpses of a murder. Doctors are unable to diagnose a specific reason, but the doctor is open to the idea that this is a vision of previous birth.
In a party, Rishi catches a glimpse of Tina Munim (in a young lady role), and falls for him; and she for him. He follows her to Ooty, but there catches sight of some sights that are very familiar and which cause him strange headaches. The story starts to fall in place for him.
In a previous birth, he was present in the form of RajKiran, very rich and living with his widowed mother and younger sister in luxury. He loves Simi Garewal, even though his mother disapproves; and marries her. She, however has a different objective, being a lackey of Sir Juda. On the way back, she kills him with a jeep and soon turns his mother and sister out of their home and property.
With this background, Rishi starts plotting to expose her. He pretends to fall in love with her. Accidentally he finds his sister and mother, and then with the help of Pran (Tina Munim's guardian), he manages to expose her, and everything turns out well.
