Bhootnath - Watchable

I watched Bhootnath just the day after having watched Jannat just the previous day, and given that my impression of Jannat was not good, any movie would have been good. But Bhootnath was a movie that impressed in parts. The Director, Vivek Sharma, tried to take many human emotions into the movie; thus taking the movie into 3 separate parts - the first part where the ghost appears to be evil and a danger to whoever tries to enter the property; the second part where the child makes friend with the ghost and turns him into a proper civilized person-like character with human emotions; and the third part where there is an attempt to throw in a lot of tear-jerkering emotional scene so that the ghost can disappear and everything can turn out normal. In the end, these attempts to make the movie cater to many interests put a lot of strain on the overall movie, and my feeling is that it did not turn out as well as could be. The movie takes on a heavy social issue of how children go abroad, and become of that land.
The movie is geared towards kids, and that was clear when I saw the songs. They were all songs designed to appeal to children, and it did seem a bit different to see songs that had a lot of kids in them; but most of the audience was adults, so was wondering whether there was a mismatch in terms of the advertising of the movie versus the intended effect of the advertising. The movie has a cast that is capable of some great things - Amitabh Bachchan, Aman Siddiqui, Juhi Chawla, Rajpal Yadav, Satish Shah, Priyanshu Chatterjee and Shahrukh Khan. Amitabh Bachchan gives a good role, but one feels that in the middle of the movie, he gets overshadowed by the kid, and then in the latter half of the movie, Shahrukh Khan seems to get most of the attention (Shahrukh Khan had a role that was more than a guest appearance, but less than a full role). Rajpal Yadav was very thoroughly under-used in the movie, getting 2 very brief scenes (almost like a cameo).
The movie is about the intersection of the characters of the young boy, Banku, and the ghost of Kailash Nath. The family of Shahrukh Khan, an engineer with a cruise company, comprises of his wife Juhi Chawla, and son Banku (Banku is a very naughty guy, and it soon shows up in school where he gets into numerous fracas (showed in a humorous way)). Shahrukh has to move his family to Goa, and his company arranges for a rental in Nath Villa (one wonders how his company did a rental in a villa that everyone knows is haunted). Juhi does not believe in ghosts, and their son has no idea about what a ghost is.
And then Banu meets the Ghost, and soon manages to control the ghost through his antics, his innocence and his questions (it helps that the ghost is of a man who was devoted to his son, and who died pining for him). And then there is a lot of camadrie between Amitabh and Amar, while Juhi is not able to believe that there is a such a thing as a ghost. This means that the ghost learns to dress normally, and even to shed tears when Banku suffers a serious injury. There is an excellent scene when Juhi realizes that her son was telling the truth, during a stage performance, and is able to actually imagine as to where the ghost must be standing.
From this point onwards, the movie becomes very serious, with the aim being to help the ghost forgive his son (who had gone abroad and not returned until his mother died pining for him), and eventually help him attain salvation. At this point, the movie moves into heavy emotional scenes, and I could see the atmosphere suddenly becoming silent in the movie hall. Music is by Vishaal Shekhar, but one felt that it was unnecessary other than the heavy Samay Ka Pahiya.

Jannat (2008) - Disappointing story

Mahesh Bhatt has been making movies for a long time, and they have been very good movies. So, for example, I really liked some of his older movies such as Arth, Saransh, Janam, Naam, Murder, Woh Lamhe, Daddy, Ashiqui, Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke, Dil Hain Ke Manta Nahin, Sadak, Sir, Tamana, etc. He has also turned out turkeys such as Duplicate. In recent time, Bhatt has moved out of the director post and is partner in the banner Vishesh films (along with his brother) that produces movies. It is expected that movies made in the banner retain the touch of Mahesh Bhatt to some degree, with a strong focus on human relations, relationships whether they be a marriage, or outside marriage. However, Jannat disappointed. The story of a person who wants to attain success, and a great deal of it (portrayed by Emran Hashemi); he does not seem to know the difference between right and wrong.



I was sitting with a group of around 7-8 colleagues (mostly eager movie goers), and after around 45 minutes (having given the movie enough time, we started laughing and wondering whether we should actually leave during half-time) and it was hard to sit there and watch the movie. The movie seemed corny, there were so many missing gaps in the storyline (such as how he managed to get this 'magical' sixth sense, and why did he have to fix matches if he could anyhow figure out the results; why did the heroine fall in love with him; how did he get the phone number of the heroine (exact call center location), or figured out her address (just from knowing her name). You cannot make a credible story and then assume that all such things happen magically.
Later when somebody asked me why the name was called 'Jannat', the only reason that I could think of was that this was a name given to represent what the hero wanted, and instead what his life turned out to be on earth was actually the reverse. So Arjun (Emran Hashmi playing a typical role with heavy shades of grey) wants to be rich, extremely rich, and this is his single minded agenda. He does not care about what his friends say, about what his parents say, not about the warnings of the initially friendly policeman, and later his girlfriend; he is right in what he does and nothing can shake him from that. It is very difficult to identify with such a person, and the way he breaks the glass in the supermarket initially (when he sees a ring that the heroine wants but cannot buy) seems very strange.
The heroine (Sonal Chauhan), in a debut role as the person who tries to reform Arjun shows some signs of maturity, but her performance when she confronts him seems to be lacking the passion of a person who is trying to do what she strongly believes in. She does look attractive, and shows resemblance to both Sonali Bendre and Deepti Bhatnagar. However, it is the script that seems to let down the overall movie. The dialogues, as well as the inter-meshing of the romance with the story of betting seems mixed up, and the sudden movements of the hero away from a life of betting, and back to it again, seems very sudden and without too much of basis (given that the hero ultimately believes that only he knows best). The ending seems so much unlike the normal character of the hero, especially when such a smart guy seems so stupid that he would do a suspicious gesture in front of the police.
The music was good, but kept on resonating throughout the movie, and by the end, even my colleagues who had liked the music had got somewhat tired of the songs. The attempt to bring in the recent death of the Pakistani coach, Bob Woolmer does not seem realistic at all. The movie is directed by Kunal Deshmukh, starring Emraan Hashmi,Rizwan Ahmed, Sonal Chauhan and Sameer Kochhar. The film is produced by Vishesh Films. Pritam scores the music for this movie.

Pathar Ke Phool (1991)

Patthar Ke Phool was a movie released in 1991. It was the debut movie of Raveena Tandon and one of the earlier movies of Salman Khan; and unlike some of Salman's earlier movies, this was not exactly a hit. Some of the other characters in the movie were Vinod Mehra, Kiran Kumar, Reema Lagoo and Manohar Singh. Vinod Mehra passed away before the movie could be released, and the movie was dedicated to his memory. The movie was directed by Anant Balani and produced by GP Sippy. Music for the movie was by Ramlaxman, and the movie was written by Salim Khan.
The movie was about this young police officer fighting an underworld gang. He is also in love with Kiran (Raveena Tandon) who is actually the daughter of the leader of the gang, and about whose real activities she is unaware.
Raveena won the Filmfare Lux New Face Award for this movie.



So what happens when the duty of Suraj (Salman Khan) leads him to fight against the activities of his beloved's father ? Her father is also against this relationship, and the movie is about this conflict.

Tum Bin (2001) - An emotional movie

Tum Bin was a movie that was released in 2001, and was a pretty low budget and low profile movie. It turned out to be the sleeper movie, becoming a much loved movie by the audience and a big hit. The songs, as well as the storyline caught a lot of attention (this was after not a classical tale of romance against the odds or a similar such formula), instead a story of an anguished semi-guilty man trying to make amends for what he has done to another family by killing their chief hope; and then the guilt of what he has done preventing him from trying to fulfill his hopes and ambitions, and his love. In addition, the same sense of shock and distraught feeling causes the heroine to back away from love and more towards responsibility. This was a story of emotions, and truly a good story (even though there were some deficiencies in the story).
The movie was produced by Super Cassettes industries (Bhushan Kumar & Krishan Kumar), and directed by newbie director Anubhav Sinha, who also wrote the script and the dialogues. The movie also stars newcomers Sandali Sinha (Piya) and Priyanshu Chatterjee (Shekhar Malhotra), and these 2 gave a good portrayal in their roles that demanded a fair amount of emotion (they have not managed to do too well after this initial good start). They are supported ably by some good casting comprising of Rakesh Bapat, Himanshu Malik, Navneet Nishan, Rajendra Gupta, Dina Pathak and Vrijesh Hirjee.
The movie is about the changes that occur in the life of Shekhar when he accidentally kills Amar Shah (Rakesh) in the beginning of the movie and seeks to go to Canada to admit his guilt and seek forgiveness from Rakesh's family. There he admits his guilt to Amar's dad who is numb and paralyzed by shock - the family is totally devastated, his sister is specially in shock. Piya, Amar's sweetheart is trying to keep the family and business together, but is finding it difficult. Shekhar literally forces himself into the company and spends his entire energy in getting the business working again. Over a period of time, they start getting close and he also starts getting close to the family, helping reduce some of their guilt.
Then they meet Abhi (Himanshu), a successful businessman who works with them and finds himself in love with Piya. Shekhar, still in guilt over his role in the death, tries to move back when he sees this happening and believes that his work is over. He also starts to create a distance between himself and Piya (including giving a moving speech at the shareholders meeting when Piya attempts to merge the company with Abhi's company). Things start to move faster in the script at this stage. The cop, investigating Amar's death with a passion, finally reaches Canada and arrests Shekhar; and Shekhar also admits his role to Piya over the phone (when Piya is about to be engaged to Abhi).
Shekhar then has an accident, in which he was very grievously injured. This is when Piya realizes that she was totally in love with Shekhar, and the family also needs him. They finally accept him.

Imtihaan (1994) - Sunny, Raveena, and Saif

Imtihaan was a movie released in 1995, starring Sunny Deol, Raveena Tandon, and Saif Ali Khan. Saif was relatively young in the movie industry at that point of time, and it showed on screen (he comes across as a gangly youth, moving with energy, but still to show his renowned acting abilities that he showed in later movies). The movie was directed by Harry Baweja, and had music by Anu Malik. The movie did average business, but the songs were a big hit.
The movie had one selling point, it had an element of suspense, something not always well executed. However, and maybe people who saw this movie for the first time would feel, the suspense is not always the type of suspense you see in American movies, since a lot of people in the audience were able to predict as to what would happen when the suspense breaks, and here too, the story was predictable.



The movie has some elements of romance, widow remarriage, revenge, parenting, etc thrown in. Preeti (Raveena) is a rich girl in love with her college friend Rajat (Sunny Deol), and they decide to marry even though her father opposes this relationship. However, on their honeymoon, disaster strikes when they are attacked by criminals and Rajat dies with his body not being recovered.
Preeti is in shock, and her father is not able to make her feel better. However, a young singer Saif Ali Khan starts liking Preeti, and although she rebuffs him, her father encourages him. Eventually, they marry even though Raveena is still not interested, and she rebuffs him after marriage. Soon, however, his passion breaks through and she starts liking him.
After some time, things start to change. Preeti apparently starts to hide things, gets phone calls, and so on, and there is enough to make Saif suspicious of her behaviour. In addition, she starts to get close to a young kid at an orphanage, and Saif starts shadowing. He soon finds out who is behind all this, and it is eventually an alive Sunny who wants his own son back (the one whom Preeti gave birth to and whom she was told was dead). And then the criminals gets involved, and eventually Sunny defeats them, at the cost of his own life.

No Entry (2005)

The movie stars these main stars, Anil Kapoor & Lara Dutta, Salman Khan and Esha Deol, Fardeen Khan and Celina Jaitley, Bipasha Basu. No Entry was one of a series of movies that dealt in a comical way with marriages and adultery. These movies were of a typical adult nature, and included movies such as Masti, No Entry, etc; movies that were criticized by a number of people for some amount of crudeness as well as depicting adult relationships in a casual manner. However, they were successful to some degree, with No Entry being a good hit. No Entry was a bit leff crude than the others, and the skin show was a bit toned down - the girls wore short clothes, but these were depicted as their normal clothes, there was a lower amount of man-girl close contact shown in the movie. The movie was directed by Anees Bazmee and produced by Boney Kapoor. Music is by Anu Malik.



No Entry deals with these 3 friends and the girls in their lives - Anil Kapoor is a journalist married to a very suspicious Lara Dutta who forever suspects him of having a relationship with other girls and he is constantly having to defend himself. Fardeen Khan is the unmarried photographer who works for Anil Kapoor, and together they make a team that takes exposes of important figures and shows them in the newspaper. He meets Celina Jaitely by accident (she miscontrues some of his actions in terms of him trying to commit suicide and tries to save him, and he is unable to understand what she is trying to do), in the process, they fall in love. Salman Khan (I did not understand what he did for a business) used to have lots of dalliances with girls while his wife Esha Deol understands him to be an ideal husband.
Introduce the club dancer and call girl Bipasha Basu to this whole scene, and you end up with complications. Both Anil Kapoor and Fardeen Khan do not believe in having a relationship outside their marriage, and once threatened Salman Khan with exposure (even though he is a good friend of theirs). Salman Khan then promised that he would take revenge, and he offers Bipasha the sum of Rs. 2 lakhs if she could tempt Anil Kapoor to stray; and she gets on the job. And this is when things heat up. Bipasha goes out with Anil to a mall, where Lara Dutta also turns up and leads to a tough time for Anil since he has to avoid being seen by Lara (including getting his office phone forwarded to his mobile number).
Things heat up further when Anil is caught up with Bipasha, and to save himself, he has to get her to be seen as Fardeen's girlfriend, something that causes complications when Fardeen gets closer to Celina (since now Lara believes that Fardeen is involved with Bipasha and cannot understand why he is getting involved with Celina). Things heat up further to the extent that both Fardeen and Anil look to Salman for help, and that is when things turn troublesome for Salman as well since his wife hears his boasting about his escapades and his 'trusting' wife. Eventually, things turn out well after a lot of tension. Bipasha is into all this since she needs money for her ailing husband, and the three guys are accepted back by their wives after a final episode involving a cliff, a rope and a snake, with all 3 hanging over the cliff. Overall, the movie can be watched at least once. One of the better known short sayings from this movie was the short phrase uttered by Anil, 'Be positive'.

Kishen Kanhaiya (1990): Masala movie

A typical masala movie of the 90's, the movie was pretty successful. It had all the elements of a masala movie, something that would make it a full family entertainer, as well as a movie to wow the front-benchers. There was intrigue, deceit, romance, action, good songs, skin display, a leading hero in a double role, the top diva of that time (Madhuri Dixit), as well as the happy ending where all the bad people meet their just ends. The movie was made by Rakesh Roshan, with music by Rajesh Roshan and lyrics by Indeevar.
The movie is of the village rich man (Shreeram Lagoo) who gets twins, but one of them is stolen and he does not even know about this; what gives him a lot of grief at that time is that his loving wife dies in child-birth. Typically for a rich man, he soon falls in the trap of getting a new wife who will also take care of the infant like a real mother; unforunately what he ends up with is the evil (in the beginning, loving) Bindu along with her real evil brother Amrish Puri. She has (from another person) a son Mahesh (Dalip Tahil), and soon starts to show her true self when both she and her brother cause Dr. Sreeram Lagoo to be really sick.
This is when they realize that her husband has made his will in a way that all the money will go to the first son's wife's control when the son turns 25. They realize that they need to keep the father and son alive, but in control, and as a result, the son, Anil Kapoor is always kept subjugated, beaten up and weak. He grows up in fear of his step-brother, uncle and mother and is beaten up at the slightest provocation. On the other hand, the stolen brother, the other Anil Kapoor grows up in the city as a fearless movie black-marketeer, unafraid of anybody. He soon meets up with Madhuri Dixit, and they both fall in love. But, since this is a double role movie of brothers, it is inevitable that they will soon meet, and one of the things that will help them do this is a connection between them - they can feel each other and if one of them is pushed or hurt, then the other feels this.
Anil Kapoor falls in love with a local girl played by the young Shilpa Shirodkar, who is mesmerized by his flute playing (incidentally, Shlipa also gives a waterfall drenched sari shot in this movie, something that was controversial). This relationship is accepted by his uncle and mother since they believe that his girl is a docile village girl and will do as they wish, and this seems to be the case. The next movement in this movie happens when the two Anil Kapoors get switched, and the people on both sides are astounded. The family in the village, facing a docile Kishen for all his life, suddenly meet an aggressive Kanhaiya who turns the tables and forces his tormentors to instead submit to him. On the other side, Madhuri Dixit in the town cannot understand this Kishen whom she meets and wonders what happened to her boyfriend ?
Things move to a complex, when in the village, they realize that a switch has happened and are able to get hold of the original and want to quickly get all the property in their name. But, in a fight, eventually, both the brothers are re-united, and defeat all the evil doers, get re-united with their loved one, and the movie ends on a happy note.
