This is a song from the movie Naaraz (also spelled Naraaz or Naaraaz) that was directed by Mahesh Bhatt and released in 1994. The movie starred Atul Agnihotri, Mithun Chakraborty, Pooja Bhatt, Sonali Bendre and Gulshan Grover. This song was sung by Sonu Malik.
NARAAZ is about the story of two friends who are from opposite backgrounds. AJAY (Atul Agnihotri) is a son of a well to do family & DEVA (Mithun Chakraborty) is from a low caste poor family. Ajay's Jagdamba Uncle does not like their friendship & sends him to London. Ajay grows up in London & become a writer of a look titled "DEVAA". He returns to village Bharatpur to meet his childhood friend Deva. He is accompanied by a London born Indian Journalist Sonali (Sonali Bendre). He takes up the cause of providing drinking water for the villagers. In the process he clashes with his Jagdamba Uncle who is in politics who causes death to scores of village people as they want to use the temple water. Song: Suraj Ki Garmi Se Jalte Huen

This song is one of the best devotional songs that I have ever heard. Taken from the movie Parinay, released in 1974, I have not managed to find the video of the original song. The movie was by Jaidev, and the song was sung by the Sharma Bandhu. The movie starred Romesh Sharma, Shabana Azmi and Asha Sachdev and the director was Kantilal Rathod.

Lyrics:

jaise sooraj kee gamree se jalate huye tan ko mil jaaye taruwar kee chhaayaa
ayesaa hee sukh mere man ko milaa hain main jab se sharan teree aayaa, mere raam

bhatakaa huaa meraa man thaa koee, mil naa rahaa thaa sahaaraa
laharon se ladtee huyee naaw ko jaise mil naa rahaa ho kinaaraa
us ladakhadaatee huyee naaw ko jo kisee ne kinaaraa dikhaayaa

sheetal bane aag chandan ke jaisee, raaghaw kariapaa ho jo teree
ujiyaalee poonam kee ho jaaye raaten, jo thee amaawas andheree
yug yug se pyaasee marubhoomee mein jaise saawan kaa sandes paayaa

jis raah kee manjil teraa milan ho, us par kadam main badhaoo
fulon mein khaaron mein, patazad bahaaron mein, mai naa kabhee dagamagaaoo
paanee ke pyaase ko takadeer ne jaise jee bhar ke amariat pilaayaa

Zinda (2006): A different kind of movie

This is the movie that people love to hate. There is a lot of hard violence in the movie (including using a drill on a person), it does not have any kind of social message whatsoever, and in addition, is not a original movie. On the contrary, I liked the movie. It is one of the movies that I see that is moving Bollywood away from the romance and around-tree-song dramas and more towards a fast-paced Hollywood kind of slick movie. The movie is based on acclaimed director Park Chan-Wook's Korean classic OLDBOY [released in 2003], and there are very few scenes in the movie that seem out of control or excessive. And did I mention that I really really liked the songs and the music. The song by 'Strings' was very very good, and the singing by Shibani Kashyap was also excellent.
The movie is directed by Sanjay Gupta (who had made similar fast-paced thrillers 'Kaante' and 'Musafir'), and stars Sanjay Dutt, John Abraham, Mahesh Majrekar, Lara Dutta and Celina Jaitely (in a small role). Music is by a whole set of people, Nikhil Chinnappa, Dj Nawed, Kinky Ronald, Vishal Dadlani, Shekhar Ravjiani.

Zinda (2006): A different kind of movie

The casting is great, with the movie starting and ending with Sanjay Dutt, with John Abraham coming late in the movie, oozing menace (one felt that he could have done a bit more practise on the throwing menace part). The movie is all about the harm caused to the emotions of a child, and how that develops into a full-throated revenge effort that drives a person to commit his life to that revenge. However, owing to the movie being released in an Indian setting, the ending is a bit melodramatic, and it is not very clear and logical as to what suddenly changed John Abraham.
So there is this software engineer who is married, moving to Thailand with his wife, Celina. She is about to have a kid, and things are looking good. And one day suddenly, in their water-front house, she does not see him after he heads towards the waterline (and actually she never sees him again). He is shown locked up in a cell, with just a TV for company, and with no idea as to what happened. He does not get explanations, although he gets to see what is happening in the world, and gets to eat momos all the time.
Days and weeks and months pass by, and he has no answers; he gets shaved and a hair cut after being made unconscious over a regular interval; he also starts learning martial arts from watching the TV. And in a shocking scene, he sees his wife next to him one day and she dies, and we learn that she actually died and he is suspected of the murder and is hunted. Time passes, and one day, 14 years later, he is released as suddenly as he is captured.
He starts to find out what happened to him, and he runs into Jenny (Lara Dutta) who is taking him around the city. She does not know what she is getting into. Sanjay Dutt has a phone and some money from his captors, and then John Abraham, over the phone, reveals that the reason why this entire capture happened to him was because of a malicious prank that Sanjay Dutt and Mahesh played on John's sister, and she was unable to bear the humiliation and committed suicide. He also gets to know that Sanjay had a daughter who is under the control of John. There are some terrific scenes of violence when he goes back to the place where he was kept locked up.
The rest of the movie is about the cat-and-mouse game between John and Sanjay, and how it ultimately moves towards the final confrontation.

Song: Akkha India Janta Hain

The song 'Akkha India Janta Hain Hum Tujhse Pyaar Karta Hain' is from a forgettable movie that came in 1992 called 'Jaan Tere Naam', made a bit of splash and then vanished. I have never seen this movie appear again on television after that, and I did not see it then, so I have no way of knowing how good this movie is. The movie starred Ronit Roy (who is now a very big television star) and Farheen. The movie was directed by Deepak Balraj Vij and produced by Jimmy Narula.
The movie is to some extent a standard college romance, and then heartbreak movie. These two are in college and love each other, and then Farheen discovers that apparently Ronit Roy has another affair and is two-timing her. She breaks up with him, and plans her marriage elsewhere. He has his own genuine reasons and the movie is about a stage when Ronit appears at her house and sings this song in order to try to woo her.
The music is by Nadeem Shravan.

Akkha India Janta Hain

Lyrics:

First Time Dekha Tumhen Ham Kho Gaya
Second Time Mein Lavh Ho Gaya
Ye Akkha India Jaanata Hai Ham Tumpe Marta Hai
Dil Kya Cheez Hai Jaanam Apani Jaan Tere Naam Karta Hai

Tere Se Marriage Karne Ko Main Bambai Se Goa Aaya
Lekin Tere Daidh Ne Mujhko Red Signal Dikhalaaya
Father Se Tere Kya Lena Mujhe
Tu Chaahe Mujhako Main Chaahun Tujhe
Ye Akkha India Jaanta Hai Ham Tumpe Marata Hai
Dil Kya Cheez Hai Jaanam Apani Jaan Tere Naam Karata Hai

Main Teri Chaahat Mein Jaanam Ban Baitha Deevaana
Lekin Toone Pyaar Ko Mere Na Samajha Na Jaana
Meri Jaan Kar Le Tu Jitana Sitam
Chhodenge Na Teri Chaahat Sanam
Ye Akkha India Jaanta Hai Ham Tumpe Marata Hai
Dil Kya Cheez Hai Jaanam Apani Jaan Tere Naam Karata Hai

Movie: Kalyug (2005)

Kalyug was a movie released in 2005 by the Bhatt family, being produced by Mahesh Bhatt & Mukesh Bhatt, and directed by Mohit Suri. The movie was a departure from the traditional movies about romance and the same, instead taking a hard look at the world of the porn industry. This is a subject that is hardly ever tackled in the Indian film industry, except for the occasional movie about a prostitute. It was a well-acclaimed movie and earned some good money as well. Even though the world of the porn industry is a complicated and hidden industry, the movie took a pretty close look, and from all accounts was able to cover the happenings in the industry to some extent.
The movie has some great music by Anu Malik, and I really liked all 4 of the songs that are listed below. The songs are very hummable. Jiya Dhadak sung by Ustad Rahet Ali Khan is a great song. The song Juda Hoke Bhi captures the angst of a man who has suffered terrible blow. So what's the movie all about ? The movie is about this Kashmiri Pandit refugee in Bombay, Kunal Khemu. He meets this beautiful and innocent girl (sent for some help by his family) Smilie Suri (looking very beautiful) and they fall for each other, and eventually get married. And that is when their lives take a turn for the worse. Their wedding night is secretly photographed, and made into a sex movie; and the police arrest them for being involved in the business of making blue movies.
Smilie is unable to take the humiliation and jumps off the building, and eventually Kunal is let off bail. He has one mission in life, to get the people responsible. He heads off to Zurich to hunt for Annie (Deepal Shaw), and once he finds her, he finds that she is as much a victim as anybody else. The people responsible are others, in this case, it is Amrita Singh in her comeback role. She is a responsible business owner, and also owns the porn ring on the side. Assisting Kunal is Emraan Hashmi in a smaller role (playing the flashy owner of a sex shop), but who helps him out a great deal. The rest of the movie is about how Kunal manages to find out the truth, and break the ring.

Tujhe dekh dekh

Aadat

Juda hoke bhi

Lyrics:

juda hoke bhi tu mujhmein kahi baaki hai
palkon mein banke aansu tu chali aati hai
juda hoke bhi

waise zinda hu zindagi bin tere main
dard hi dard baaki raha hai seene mein
saans lena bhar hi yaha jeena nahi hain
ab toh aadat si hai mujhko aaise jeene mein
juda hoke bhi tu mujhmein kahi baaki hai
palkon mein banke aansu tu chali aati hai

saath mere hain tu har pal shab ke andhere mein
paas mere hain tu ujale savere savere mein
dil se dhadkan bhula dena aasan nahi hai
ab toh aadat si hai mujhko aaise jeene mein
juda hoke bhi tu mujhmein kahi baaki hai
palkon mein banke aansu tu chali aati hai

ab toh aadat si hai mujhko aaise jeene mein
yeh jo yaadein hai - 2
sabhi kaatein hai - 2
katado inhe - 2
ab toh aadat si hai mujhko

Jiya Dhadak

Lyrics:

tujhe dekh dekh sona - 2
tujhe dekh kar hain jagna
maine yeh zindagani
sang tere bitaani
tujhmein basi hain meri jaan haai
(jiya dhadak dhadak - 3

kabse hai dil mein mere armaan kai ankahe - 2
inko tu sunle aaja chaahat ke rang chadha jaa - 2
kehna kabhi to mera maan haai
(jiya dhadak dhadak - 3

lagta hain yeh kyu mujhe sadiyon se chaahu tujhe - 2

Song: Chookar Mere Man Ko

From the movie Yaarana, this song is an extra-ordinarily beautiful song. The scenario of the song is when Neetu Singh is training Amitabh Bachchan for a stage performance, and he is unable to do it. She gets angry with him for not doing this, and asks him whether he can do this for her. He then sings this song, and after this song, he sings the stage song, 'Saara Zamana Hasino Ka Deewana'. The movie had another beautiful song, 'Tera Jaisa Yaar Kahan'. The movie starred Amitabh Bachchan, Amjad Khan, Neetu Singh, Tanuja, and the movie was directed by Rakesh Kumar with music by Rajesh Roshan.
The movie had a beautiful story of friendship between Amitabh and the late Amjad Khan (probably one of the few positive roles by Amjad Khan). Amjad Khan and Amitabh are fast childhood friends, but get separated when Amjad's mother takes him to the city. He gets rich and successful, and then calls his friend Amitabh over to make him a star. Amitabh has a good voice, trains with Neetu Singh and eventually becomes a star. Around the same time, Amjad sees his fortune vanishing, and gets into serious trouble. At this time Amitabh helps him and displays the true characters of a good friend.

Lyrics:

Chhookar Mere Man Ko Kiya Toone Kya Ishaara
Badla Yeh Mausam Lage Pyaara Jag Saara

Tu Jo Kahe Jeevan Bhar Tere Liye Maein Gaoon
Geet Tere Bolon Pe Likhta Chala Jaoon
Mere Geeton Mein Tujhe Dhoonde Jag Saara
Chhookar Mere Man Ko

Aaja Tera Aanchal Yeh Pyaar Se Maein Bhar Doon
Khushiyaan Jahan Bhar Ki Tujhko Nazar Kar Doon
Tu Hi Mera Jeevan Tu Hi Jeene Ka Sahaara
Chhookar Mere Man Ko

Saara Zamana Hasino Ka Deewana

Tridev: A real entertainer

At near the end of the 80's came a movie that was every inch a masala movie. Tridev. It was a super-hit, with all the elements of a masala movie thrown in. There was revenge, romance, guns, explosions, a villain, a hero back from the dead, another hero who is a villager who falls for a rich and cultured girl, there is a villain who looks like a proper villain, and then there was the catchy songs. I remember that 'Oye Oye' was the most heard song when outside your house, being played in vehicles, in music stores, by shopkeepers, and for some time became the patron phrase of eve-teasers.
The movie was directed by Rajiv Rai and released in 1989, and it sort of also was the major movie in which Naseerudin Shah acts as a normal actor in a commercial movie, away from the art movies that he was so famous. There was some screaming from the art movie types about this betrayal, but I think that his response was to the effect that he also needs to be a success, and he does not see anything wrong in doing commercial movies.

Tridev: A real entertainer

The movie also led to a relationship between the director and one of his heroines. Rajiv Rai (34 years old) and Sonam (17 years old) fell in love, and eventually got married soon after.
The movie had music by Kalayanji Anandji, lyrics by Anand Bakshi, and starred the following: Sunny Deol, Jackie Shroff, Naseeruddin Shah, Madhuri Dixit, Sonam, Sangeeta Bijlani, Anupam Kher, Amrish Puri and Raza Murad. With such a large star cast, you would expect that there would be a number of stories around the various cast members, and the movie could get complex, but in my opinion, the director did a wonderful job in terms of getting the movie together into a fluid and flowing entertainer.
After all this, the story of the movie almost seems like an after-thought, but the movie does have a story. Bhujang is the pivot around which the movie runs, he is the villain who impacts the lives of all the main characters. When Naseeruddin Shah was young, his father was killed by Bhujang in a village, and the police was unable to help. Ever since then, he is somewhat disdainful of the police force and its men. Sunny Deol is a hard policeman, very critical of criminals, and as a result of excessive use of force in one such encounter with criminals, he is sent off to police lines. When in Bombay, he was a strong force against the illegal activities of Bhujang and his sons. He is supported by the police commissioner Anupam Kher, and is also in love with the commissioner's daughter, Madhuri Dixit.
At one time, Bhujang kidnaps Madhuri to get one of his men free, and Anupam Kher refuses to do anything, and it is then Jackie Shroff (Anupam's son) defies his dad and breaks into the jail and frees the person. Since he is now hunted by the police, Jackie joins the gang and soon falls for Sangeeta Bijlani, who is with the gang to avenge a past harm that Bhujang did. The characters start meeting in terms of Sonam (daughter of Raza Murad)coming to the village for a shoot and meets Naseeruddin and they start liking each other. Sunny is posted in the same village, and soon he has a violent run-in with Naseeruddin, but they like each and becomes friends. The rest of the movie is about how these characters join hands, and fight Bhujang and his men and eventually defeat them.
