Kishen Kanhaiya (1990): Masala movie

A typical masala movie of the 90's, the movie was pretty successful. It had all the elements of a masala movie, something that would make it a full family entertainer, as well as a movie to wow the front-benchers. There was intrigue, deceit, romance, action, good songs, skin display, a leading hero in a double role, the top diva of that time (Madhuri Dixit), as well as the happy ending where all the bad people meet their just ends. The movie was made by Rakesh Roshan, with music by Rajesh Roshan and lyrics by Indeevar.
The movie is of the village rich man (Shreeram Lagoo) who gets twins, but one of them is stolen and he does not even know about this; what gives him a lot of grief at that time is that his loving wife dies in child-birth. Typically for a rich man, he soon falls in the trap of getting a new wife who will also take care of the infant like a real mother; unforunately what he ends up with is the evil (in the beginning, loving) Bindu along with her real evil brother Amrish Puri. She has (from another person) a son Mahesh (Dalip Tahil), and soon starts to show her true self when both she and her brother cause Dr. Sreeram Lagoo to be really sick.
This is when they realize that her husband has made his will in a way that all the money will go to the first son's wife's control when the son turns 25. They realize that they need to keep the father and son alive, but in control, and as a result, the son, Anil Kapoor is always kept subjugated, beaten up and weak. He grows up in fear of his step-brother, uncle and mother and is beaten up at the slightest provocation. On the other hand, the stolen brother, the other Anil Kapoor grows up in the city as a fearless movie black-marketeer, unafraid of anybody. He soon meets up with Madhuri Dixit, and they both fall in love. But, since this is a double role movie of brothers, it is inevitable that they will soon meet, and one of the things that will help them do this is a connection between them - they can feel each other and if one of them is pushed or hurt, then the other feels this.
Anil Kapoor falls in love with a local girl played by the young Shilpa Shirodkar, who is mesmerized by his flute playing (incidentally, Shlipa also gives a waterfall drenched sari shot in this movie, something that was controversial). This relationship is accepted by his uncle and mother since they believe that his girl is a docile village girl and will do as they wish, and this seems to be the case. The next movement in this movie happens when the two Anil Kapoors get switched, and the people on both sides are astounded. The family in the village, facing a docile Kishen for all his life, suddenly meet an aggressive Kanhaiya who turns the tables and forces his tormentors to instead submit to him. On the other side, Madhuri Dixit in the town cannot understand this Kishen whom she meets and wonders what happened to her boyfriend ?
Things move to a complex, when in the village, they realize that a switch has happened and are able to get hold of the original and want to quickly get all the property in their name. But, in a fight, eventually, both the brothers are re-united, and defeat all the evil doers, get re-united with their loved one, and the movie ends on a happy note.

Andaaz Apna Apna (1994) - Great comedy

Salman Khan and Aamir Khan have hardly appeared together in many movies, and I think Andaz Apna Apna is the only movie in which they may have appeared together. When the movie came out, these 2 were the tallest stars in the Hindi film industry, and there was a lot of worry about how the egos of these 2 stars would be managed. So, when director Rajkumar Santoshi announced this project, there was a feeling of challenge about how this would turn out (Santoshi had a good reputation, having directed Ghayal and Damini before this movie). This movie, released in 1994, was eagerly anticipated; in the end, viewer reaction was very positive. Of course, no one would ever call this a serious movie - it was a very well done comedy.
The movie took a long time to get made, with anticipation that ego clashes between 2 main leading male stars would cause problems; ironically it were ego clashes between the 2 heroines (Karishma Kapoor and Raveena Tandon) that caused a lot of delay in the making of the movie. However, it was lucky that this infighting did not show up on screen, and a lot of people would walk away from the movie thinking that this was a fun shoot, and everybody was lovey-dovey with each other.



The movie also starred some more actors, all of them in semi-or complete comedy roles: Paresh Rawal (in a double role), Viju Khote, Shehzad Khan and Shakti Kapoor. The movie also had guest appearances by Juhi Chawla and Govinda. The movie had some good songs, with music by Tushar Bhatia and lyrics by Majrooh Sultanpuri.
The movie stars these 2 good-for-nothing young men, Amar (Aamir Khan) and Prem (Salman Khan) from 2 different cities. These young men have a dream for which they are willing to spend some effort, but the dream revolves around marrying a rich heiress Raveena (Tandon). They are young, believe that if they can impress her, she will marry them easily, and set out. And where do the get the money for this journey ? Why, they sell their dad's shops (bangle shop and hair saloon) and set out. They meet on a bus and discover that they have the same objective - so they set out to out-smart each other. The director had to ensure that he would not be seen as favoring one over the other, so he would alternate the scenes or show both of them, and one feels that Santoshi managed this fairly well. There are 2 very interesting scenes - one in the motel where they have to spend the night, and the other in the police station where they try to implicate each other as being a wanted criminal (by pasting each other's photos in the wanted chart).
They finally reach her mansion, get rid of all the other similar youth gathered over there and pretend to be old relatives of Raveena's (from Lucknow); however, they are soon exposed. They need to get into her household to be near her, and pretend to get hit by her so that Amar can get into the household in an unconscious state, while Prem pretends to be his doctor (Amar has now moved into the familiar mode of claiming to have amnesia). They still try to outsmart each other in these roles, and the various incidents between these two are a laugh. Prem in the meantime starts to feel closer to Raveena's assistant Karisma (who is actually the real heiress Raveena, having switched roles to detect anybody after her money).
They soon resolve who is close to who, but have to content with a very suspicious Raveena's father Ram Gopal Bajaj (Paresh Rawal) who is not at all happy with these 2 boys claiming to be after his girls. To add more drama, he has a poorer evil twin brother Teja who wants to get all the money that Bajaj has. Teja gets his cronies Robert (Viju Khote) and Bhalla (Shehzad Khan) to plan various plots, but they all keep on blowing up. Teja in fact kidnaps Bajaj, and when Bajaj manages to free himself, both Amar and Prem mistakenly get him caught again. Then there is the hilarious Crime Master Gogo (Shakti Kapoor) who is after Bajaj's wealth. Eventually, in a hilarious kidnap scene, all of these characters come together in a climax scene, that is pretty funny.

Prahaar: A classic movie for Nana Patekar

There are times when you watch that is so impressive that you don't mind watching it again. I found Prahaar to be one such movie. The movie was released in 1991, and it has been quite some time, but it can't take away the topical nature of the movie. The movie was directed by Nana Patekar and produced by Sudhakar Bokade. The movie had music by Laxmikant Pyarelal and lyrics by Mangesh Kulkarni.
Nana Patekar showed a commendable amount of skill in extracting good performances from the cast of characters that included Dimple Kapadia and Madhuri Dixit (there was a story floating around the time when the movie was made that he wanted a natural look, and so when one of the female leads reported to the set in make-up, he asked her to wash the make-up off). The movie does not have a direct villain, but there is a struggle against many kinds of bad elements, whether it be terrorists, or the normal city ruffians and hoodlums who take hafta (extortion money), or even of the normal population who have been so terrorised that they have lost some of their sense of right or wrong. The movie also has some good performances from the second tier of characters such as Gautam Joglekar (who plays Peter D'Souza).
The movie starts off as the story about men who have joined the army as commandos. They start to undergo the army commando training course under the tutelage of Major Chauhan (Nana - who actually took a brief training course at the army commando training course), and the course can be pretty hard, forcing many of them to feel like dropping out. Some do, but Peter does not and completes the course finally. By that time, he has developed a respect for Major Chauhan. The training course depicted is fairly detailed, with a certain amount of humour showing up.
At the end of the course, they are called to undertake an anti-terrorist operation, successful, but Peter is crippled and has to return home and leave the army. He reaches home, and his fiancee Madhuri is glad to have him back. His army training however soon causes him to start opposing the local mafia who extort money, and soon he is killed. At this time, Major Chauhan comes for the funeral, and sees how the local police is unconcerned and takes no action.
Major Chauhan takes up as a paying guest in the house of Dimple (a young widow with a small child) and gets affectionate towards the child (they never actually show any romance between Nana and Dimple, although there are many hints towards something like this possibly developing). Once he actually takes on the ruffians single-handedly when they tease Dimple, but soon realizes that the local citizens are so suppressed by the mafia that they actually turn on Nana for going against the ruffians. And then the epic scene where the gangsters (this was from an age where the use of guns was less) decide to attack Dimple's house and Nana.
They first scare Dimple and her child, and then they taunt Nana. And then the fight begins - you can see the untrained ruffians being very confident of their youth and numbers against a person who is after a single person and older than them, and yet soon they realize that the person whom they are attacking can defeat all of them, and Nana proceeds to do just that. In the process, he actually kills them, and is soon hauled up before the court. And his speech about being a soldier, and fighting against the vermin of society goes in vain, since the judge declares that his fight is misplaced, he is not responsible for repairing the civilian society, and he is sent for counseling until he is over this.
The movie is a movie that talks about how the fight against injustice is something that all of us can handle, how the personal conviction and strength of a person can make them win odds, and yet how sometime the whole fight can be futile in the face of a disinterested administration.

Jhuk Gaya Aasman : A delightful masala movie

Jhuk Gaya Aasman is a 1968 film directed by Lekh Tandon. The film stars Rajendra Kumar, Saira Banu, Rajendranath and Prem Chopra. Music is by Shankar Jaikishan, and lyrics by Hasrat Jaipuri. The film is a remake of the Hollywood film Here comes Mr. Jordan. I watched the movie the first time when I was in my school years (am not telling you how far back that was), and I found it to be a ridiculous movie, and yet I have watched it numerous times. It always seems like a great masala movie, a movie that is a total entertainer.
The movie is a bit off the beaten track; it has the familiar stories of a bad younger brother, of a romance between a beautiful outsider and a man of the hills, a devoted friend - but where this movie took the twist into a new area was the concept of dying, then finding out that you died by mistake and having to go into another body where you find that the girl you loved actually hates you; and then the innate goodness taking over and making things fine.
The movie is about this hill town guide on a jeep, Rajendra Kumar. Saira Banu shows up along with friends, and soon they fall in love with promises for later. On the way back when he has dropped her off at the airport, Rajendra Kumar has an accident and can see himself going off to heaven; where he is informed that he is the victim of mistaken identity. He was brought to heaven when it was his lookalike who should have been brought. However, his body has been burnt and he can no longer go back to what he was; he can enter the other body and live that life.
That other guy comes back to life, and of course, he was a bad guy with a worse brother who had tried to kill him and frame Saira Banu (the daughter of the family accountant) for the murder. Saira Banu hates this new version, and Rajendra Kumar sets out to make things better, repairing relations with all the people around him, and he is able to do so as well as defeat the devious younger brother.



The movie is not to be taken very seriously, just watch it and enjoy the entertainment. There is some spendid acting by the lead stars, with Rajendra Kumar playing his double roles to perfection, Saira Banu playing the great looking outsider and then the concerned daughter, and Prem Chopra the not-to-be-reformed villainous role of the younger brother. Rajendranath plays the devoted friend nicely, especially whenever he has to consider the part that his best friend could now be a ghost.

The movie has a few great songs, with a signature sexy bath song dance by Saira Banu

Taare Zameen Par - A moving tale

Taare Zameen Par is a delightful movie. At the same time Shahrukh Khan was coming out with a hit nonsense Om Shanti Om, Aamir Khan came out with this gem of a movie that was a heart-shaker. At first release, a lot of people saw this as a serious movie, about the passion of a person for making the type of movie that he believes in; and the first reaction was the worry about whether this movie was a success. That got answered soon, the movie was a big success; families who went to see the movie had only good things to say for it, and the movie gained tremendous word of mouth publicity. You could hardly find anybody being critical of this movie, given the tremendous performances by the young actor, by the actress playing his mother, and by Aamir (and how often do you see a star not even appearing on the screen till the interval ?).



The movie has a fairly simple story line, and is well handled by the combination of a good story by Amole Gupte (who was almost the Director before Aamir took it away), great music by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy (Ehsaan Noorani, Loy Mendonca, Shankar Mahadevan), and lyrics by Prasoon Joshi. The music lends a great amount of support to the movie, with the 'Meri Maa' song having moved many people to express themselves emotionally.
From this point on, as you read on, the story will become apparent, and if you want to retain the suspense of the movie plot, please stop reading.
The story is about this 8 year old boy Ishaan Awasthi [Darsheel Safary in an incredible prize-winning performance]. He lives in a world of his own, something that his normal middle-class parents can't understand. They are more interested in things that a kid in a competitive environment should be good in - class, homework, studies; and can't understand why Ishaan is not good in all these - they cannot connect to his interests, his hobbies, etc. They cannot connect to his colors, his fascination for different things. Eventually, they decide to send him to a boarding school, something that makes him more quiet, more withdrawn.
Eventually, after half-time comes in a new teacher, Ram Shankar Nikumbh [Aamir Khan], responsible for art classes. He is like a breath of fresh air, and creates a new sense of joy and optimism, infecting all the students with optimism except for Ishaan. He gets more interested in figuring out why Ishaan is so unhappy, and even travels to Mumbai to meet Ishaan's parents; he explains about the differences between different children and makes them understand. He finally gets Ishaan to break through in the final art competition. Overall, the movie is a touching tale of children.
The portrayals of the other characters is also very good and contributes - Tisca Chopra as Ishaan's mother gives a great performance, Tanay Cheda [as Ishaan's friend Rajan Damodaran] gives a good performance, Vipin Sharma [Ishaan's father] portrays a middle class father in a pretty good way.

Jab We Met

This is a tragic cum successful movie. For a long time, the pair of Shahid Kapur and Kareena Kapoor tries their luck in movies that did not work (example, Fida and 36 China Town, etc. ). And then when they broke up and announced to the whole world that they were not together, here comes a movie that was very successful, both critically and commercially. However, given that they have broken up and Kareena waltzed off into the arms of a married father, Saif Ali Khan, it is unlikely that they will start any new project together (may complete old projects, but no new ones).
The movie is directed by Imtiaz Ali, who had earlier directed another great, yet low-key movie, Socha Na Tha. Music of the movie was a big hit, by Pritam, and lyrics by Irshad Kamil. Overall, the movie, although not a very new theme, seems to attract, and not a hackneyed plot. Performances by Kareena as the hyper girl from Bhatinda, and Shahid as the much more mellow counter-foil, the businessman who failed in love and is depressed, and then comes up trumps, gives a great performance, not letting Kareena get all the credit.



Imagine a guy depresses over a failed love affair. His business is not exactly doing great either, and then he meets this girl who talks non-stop; what could be more irritating, especially when you are sharing the same compartment on a train. Well, the guy is Aditya Kashyap (Shahid Kapur) and the girl is a Sikhni Geet (Kareena Kapoor), who talks non-stop to him.
However, she misses her train in trying to get him back on the train, and then manages to convince him to take her to Bhatinda (after all, she missed her train because of him). They travel using a number of different means, and this entire journey changes the outlook of Aditya. Aditya also learns that Geet is in love with a person called Anshuman, but her family is not please with this. Her family on seeing him naturally assume that Aditya and Geet are an item, but this is not to be.
Aditya promises to take Geet to meet Anshuman, and takes her to Anshuman's city, and then leaves, love in his heart, but Geet loves another. He is no longer depressed, and becomes a successful businessman; soon her family traces him and wants to know as to what happened to Geet.
Aditya promises to find out, and then finds out that Anshuman had rejected her, and Geet is now working, leading a very dull life (and she was full of energy). He traces her, and gets her vitality back, unfortunately that brings Anshuman back to her life (sadly for Aditya). Interesting scene is when Aditya, Anshuman and Geet go back to Bhatinda, and her family assumes that Aditya is the one with Geet. Anshuman is increasingly irritated with this whole scenario, but it is Geet who is changing. She realizes that she actually loves Aditya, and so ends the movie.
Overall, this is a nice fresh movie.

Race: Worth a one time see

In order to make a movie successful in today's world, there are certain ways. One of the most important ways is for it to be a hit in the first week - with the number of shows on display during the first week, the movie can make a large amount of movie in the first week. And Race got lucky. For 2 weeks before Race, there was no movie released, generating a huge amount of pent-up demand. In addition, the school boards for 10th and 12th class had just got over, and a new movie would be totally irresistible. And of course, you had the promos promising lots of action, hot stars, plenty of skin, and songs that were played on the radio repeatedly, generating yet more demand.
With all these factors, did the movie actually cooperate ? Well, I would say that just the story and the twists and turns of the movie make it worth watching once, but after that would get difficult. But I never did understand the reason for the movie having the name of race; there are horse races, and a final race (that somehow did not really impress); the rest of the movie was about intrigue and betrayal. So this was the first question I asked my spouse after the movie - why this name ?



The movie has an impressive pedigree. The movie is produced by Kumar S. Taurani, Ramesh S. Taurani and directed by the action director duo of Abbas-Mastan; further the movie stars currently hot stars such as Anil Kapoor, Saif Ali Khan, Akshaye Khanna, Bipasha Basu, Katrina Kaif, and Sameera Reddy. Music is by Pritam and lyrics by Sameer. So nothing could possibly go wrong, right ? Well, hold onto the champagne. Methinks the directors have tried too much.
So what you have is a fast movie, with an incredible amount of twists and turns in the story. In fact, there were a couple of times in the movie where I got surprised by what happened - I was expecting something else to happen and I got a real surprise. So, in that way, the surprise element was there throughout. However, one also got the feel that the director over-did this, since there was also a feeling that the twists and turns were put in just to increase the twists and turns. So, for example, the character of Katrina Kaif in the second half suddenly changes, and one cannot understand why.
The movie is about the relationship between 2 brothers - Ranvir Singh and Rajeev Singh. They are essentially very close, with Ranveer Singh (Saif Ali Khan) being the responsible elder brother and Rajeev Singh (Akshaye Khanna) being the alcoholic younger brother. They have a business (horse farm and associated) that is in debt, and need to get money by selling a property. Ranveer can be quite ruthless as exemplified by the way he kills his former jockey or destroys Dalip Tahil, his rival. Ranveer has a very efficient secretary in the form of mini-skirted and devoted Katrina Kaif, and is slowly getting closer to a model Bipasha Basu. To complete the gang, Anil Kapoor is a famous detective, and Sameera Reddy his dumb (and attractive) assistant.
What both brothers do have is an insurance policy worth $100 million to their heirs. When they are not married, they are each others inheritors, but after marriage, the wife becomes the heir. The movie is about everything being a betrayal, nobody being what they seem to be, and best of all, everybody doing whatever they need to make themselves more money. The whole movie works in a conflict mode, whether it be planning for betrayal, or an investigation.
